An epic love story awaits with MBC’s My Dearest
by stroopwafel
The first teaser for My Dearest (previously Lovers) has dropped and it features lead actors Namgoong Min (One Dollar Lawyer) and Ahn Eun-jin (The Good Bad Mother).
The melo sageuk is set during the Joseon era, during the 1636 Qing Invasion of Korea. The invasion was an important historical event for the country, with lingering political and social impacts for Joseon. The drama’s story will follow both the romance that ties our leads together but also the lives of commoners as they strive to survive.
There are few details on Namgoong Min’s character Lee Jang-hyun, but it’s clear from the teaser that he plays a pivotal military role. Ahn Eun-jin will play his beloved, Yoo Gil-chae. Lee Hak-joo (Shadow Detective) has been cast in a supporting role and judging from the glimpse we get of him in the teaser, he’ll also be fighting for Joseon on the battlefield. Rounding out the main cast is Lee Da-in (Alice) as a woman named Kyung Eun-ae.
The teaser begins with a look at the lives of Jang-hyun and Gil-chae during what seems to be a time of peace. They’re wearing beautiful hanbok and they even attend a big, joyful celebration. But the sun-dappled happiness quickly turns to devastation, with dead villagers and soldiers strewn across the ground.
In voiceover, a man asks desperately, “Have they truly given up on [the fortress] Namhansanseong?” A Qing leader stands atop the walls of a military encampment and his gaze passes across the mountain fortress.
From there, we switch to the king seated in front of rows of ministers with their heads bowed. Jang-hyun darkly states, “What they want is for the king of Joseon to bow his head to them.” Scenes of utter devastation roll across the screen as Jang-hyun continues, “I’ll have to kill these bastards.”
Gil-chae, now dressed in humble, plain clothing seems shocked as she encounters a weary, blood-splattered Jang-hyun. Copy across the screen flashes by: “A love that was thrown into the flames of war.” While Jang-hyun throws himself into battle, Gil-chae helps people flee to safety. Her desperate screams for everyone to run overlap with another sentence onscreen: “Lovers whose paths nearly cross yet cannot reunite.” Even if fate conspires to keep them apart, Jang-hyun is ready to create a way forward for love. He tells her, “I swear by this moonlight, this time wherever you are, I swear I will go to you.” As the teaser ends, the two lovers are reunited in darkness, with Jang-hyun kneeling before Gil-chae.
It’s Namgoong Min’s first sageuk in 10 years and I can’t wait to see what he brings to the genre. Even when a drama is less than compelling, Namgoong Min always brings something to his roles that keeps me watching straight to the very end. Although Ahn Eun-jin’s role was relatively small, I also enjoyed her in the horror sageuk Kingdom so I’m looking forward to seeing their chemistry together.
The drama will have a team of two directors, Kim Sung-yong, the main PD for Namgoong Min’s previous hit drama The Veil, and Chun Soo-jin who was assistant director for The Veil. Scripts will be penned by Hwang Jin-young (Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People).
MBC is also getting the season-itis that’s sweeping through dramaland, and My Dearest will air in two parts with Season 1 (10 episodes) premiering on August 4 in the Friday-Saturday slot.

MDL had Part 1 as 20 EPs and Part 2 as 10 EPs... I hope to goodness that's not true and it's just MDL being Wrong again because while I'm going to start this, I'm not confident I can even get through one part rn, let alone two.
Also *hate and rage and continued loathing at seasonitis*

I appreciate your dislike but it is likely much easier on the actors, director/s and the other creatives. Of course, it has a commercial pull as well as tgey are betting people will come back and won’t cancel their subscriptions.

Do you mean splitting what is essentially one show into two?
Then yes, I could see how it could lighten certain loads. That would be greatly dependent on other factors first and foremost though- just because the show is split in two, doesn't mean production is, and doesn't mean working conditions are worse/better.
The commercial pull is almost certainly the stronger factor here anyway.
And for me, my approach is almost always narratively: as a general rule of thumb*, "Seasonitis" for kdramas, be it actual second seasons, continuation seasons, the splitting of one show, or any other freaktastic version, is worse for the story, and the enjoying of the story.

No, I was thinking about when the story could accommodate a further season and is not just expediently and opportunistically split into two parts. The KD model of one and done is clearly not working for the majority of shows given how they lose the plot midway both literally and metaphorically. I know many KD viewers are firmly wedded to the finite episodic format but I am prepared to wait for another season if it is artistically beneficial. In this I include not only the health and safety of the actors and crew but the creatives. I don’t always require instant gratification and can wait if it results in a more coherent storyline and better direction that doesn’t implode halfway through. Often, the acting in KDmas by some actors is so much better than the material they are working with and so I believe they and we the audience deserve better.

Forgive me if I have farther misread you at all in my response, but the reponse is made nonetheless.
I would like to hear your argument for what dramas with second seasons you think have truly justified it narratively, and also for why you think that the “one and done” formula is responsible for kdramas losing the plot halfway or not sticking the landing?
Because,
1. I do not believe the One and Done formula is at all responsible for the issues Kdramas have that you have highlighted, or any more besides, and I feel it is getting blamed for something that isn’t its fault.
2. I do not believe that adding second seasons is going to magically change said Kdrama issues highlighted.
There is ZERO guarantee that a second season, a split season or anything else will result in a better story or better direction. It’s like the argument that preproduced dramas are more likely not to implode as well. (They aren’t.)
The things that cause bad directing, bad writing, weak endings, and plots to implode are not directly correlated to a show’s length. And if anything, I think that some issues are better, not solved per se, but better addressed by going the OTHER WAY, that is by getting shorter, instead of longer.
3. I have always said this regarding episode length, drama length, and second seasons- that what is more important than anything else- or rather, what SHOULD be more important- is having a narrative length and style that is BEST suited for the STORY you want to tell, and what that story NEEDS.
If you do not know the story you want to tell, then that is primary problem.
If you know the story but not how to get there or how to end it, then THAT is your primary problem and it won’t matter how long or short your story is either.
*Controversial Opinion, but also, just because a creator WANTS something for a story, doesn’t actually mean it is what is best for the story, or what the story truly needs. A Creator might want another season- that doesn’t mean they should get it… because not all writers/PDs understand what their stories NEED, or indeed even understand storytelling, and then THAT is the primary problem.
As much as I am a big supporter of the Single Story, 12 Episode Format, I think THIS^ is more important than anything.
4. However. On the same note, I do actually think, that what most stories I have seen NEED, and would be best SUITED for, is NOT to be longer, and not to be split up, and not to be continued.
Because I happen to think that the One and Done format has actually always been one of Kdramas greatest strengths, and that they should be focusing on getting better at THAT and what that would truly need and look like, rather than throwing out that formula altogether.
(The One and Done formula is really strong thematically, for example.)
5. I can only personally think of two kdramas that I know of, and one is not even one I have seen, where a second season could be argued to have been beneficial to...
💜🍍☠ Sicarius The Queen of Melonia ☠🍍💜
July 9, 2023 at 10:29 PM
... the story, or added to the story, or made the story truly better in some way.
One is Forest of Secrets, which I have yet to see.
And the other is Age of Youth. (However, I think the second Age of Youth had both all the same issues as the first one, and also made certain decisions during its run which could be argued against it even being included.)
I have not seen a single other drama that HAS a second season or is GETTING a second season, where a second season is either good, adds to it or makes it better (planned or unplanned), or is truly justified or “artistically beneficial” as you put it, not even Kingdom (Patented Minority Opinion yes, and also, sorry Kingdom). I have not seen or heard of a single seasonal “split” that was narratively or artistically justified either.
And I’m not even sure that I can right now think of any show that doesn’t have a second season and that I truly think deserves one or could do with one (and even if it did get one, there’s no guarantee it would be good anyway).
And whilst there are plenty of shows that are longer and do justify being longer, none of them were split into seasons to do so.
6. But more importantly,
The Episode Runtime, the Number of Episodes and now, even the number of “seasons” and “parts”, has almost never actually been dictated by what the story needs/what a creator wants*- it is dictated by sponsors, advertisement, stations, ratings, viewership, and what airing slots are available, both by the day, and by the slot available over the year’s schedule.
None of which are Story First orientated.
7. So I’m sorry, but I will continue to be wildly cynical about Second Seasons, and similar what have yous.
I am not ANTI Seasons in theory (indeed, one of my own main writing projects would actually be best suited for a limited but multi seasonal run, and is planned as one), but I have no reason to believe that Kdramas are going about them for any of the right reasons, or that in doing so it will help them get better, because all evidence I have seen both in Kdramas, and in fact in Western shows, is overall to the contrary.
Both the true issue that you are trying to highlight, and the solution, lie elsewhere.
As they stand, seasons create more problems than they do solve them.

(**Weak Hero MAY justify its planned second season, but considering the end and tone of the first one, I'm REALLY skeptical. I also don't want to watch S2 because of how S1 ended. So that's not a good place to be in... if you fix it, you might justify it, maybe, in part, if you don't, then you will not.
I am also not including things like the ongoing School or Reply series.)

This looks epic.
Although I've watched several of his dramas, I don't think I've ever seen Namgoong Min in a romantic role, so that's the first reason I'm excited. The second is that I've now seen AEJ in three projects, and she has proven herself to be a consistently and rather effortlessly riveting actress. I can't imagine the two of them together won't be heartwrenching and angsty in all the best ways.
The trailer also suggests this drama had a huge budget, and although that doesn't always bespeak quality, it is generally a promising sign that a lot of thought and effort went into the production.
I don't mind the division into two parts, either, as long as only a few months separate the first from the second.
One worry I have, however, is that this will be a tragic sageuk. I know melo doesn't always mean sad ending with divided lovers and death all around, but it often does. Nevertheless, I know I'm going to watch this regardless.

Interestingly, he chose the era of Yeonsangun (Rebel) and Injo (My Dearest), who are two of the worst kings in Joseon history.
I hope Injo is a no-show like WAR of the ARROWS. If the focus is on the (leads) people and how they survived the 2nd Manchu Invasion, I might forget about all the garbage sageuks we've had to endure.

@kiara, I think there are two ways for kdramas to deal with a bad king:
1. Make him a secondary character with little screen time (Chuno)
2. Make him a compelling villain (Rebel).
Namhan fortress and king Injo are mentioned in the trailer, so I wonder how the actual historical events and people will be incorporated in the story.
So far, they got the season right.

I'll always go with #1. Kim Kap-soo is an exceptional actor!
I'm just going to keep my expectation low.
I found the pilot episode of CRUEL PALACE to be the most epic opening of any Manchu invasion sageuk. However, there was too much Injo for my liking, so I did not finish it. LOL

What other Manchu invasion dramas are out there? I remember the movie War of the Arrows, but apart from Chuno flashbacks I have not seen drama treatment of this event. There is the movie The Fortress, but I read that there is too much Injo in it, so I am reluctant to watch it.

I do not believe it has anything to do about lessening production's work load since they can always adjust the air date of a show. It think it has more to do with monetary reasons. This splitting of dramas started since streaming platforms joined the fray.
