News bites: June 14, 2023

Kim Woo-bin, Suzy

  • Hit writer Kim Eun-sook (The Glory) is teaming up with director Lee Byung-heon (Be Melodramatic) for a new series called All Shall Come True (roughly translated), headlined by Kim Woo-bin (Black Knight) and Suzy (Anna). Although I’m a little triggered by their re-pairing, I’m glad to see that it’s a fantasy rom-com and it better be the fluffiest of stories with rainbow-colored marshmallows and absolutely no doom or gloom. [News1]

  • Park Jin-ju (Critical X) has been cast in ENA’s melodrama Tell Me You Love Me, joining Jung Woo-sung (Fly Dragon) and Shin Hyun-bin (Reborn Rich) in the lineup. Aiming to broadcast in the early half of 2024, preparations are underway to start filming later this year. PD Kim Yoon-jin (Our Beloved Summer) is attached to direct with scripts by Kim Min-jung (The Sound of Magic). [Sports Kyunghyang]

  • The promo train has finally taken off for Disney+’s upcoming Moving, boasting an impressively large cast including Ryu Seung-ryong (Kingdom), Han Hyo-joo (Happiness), Jo In-sung (It’s Okay, It’s Love), Cha Tae-hyun (Brain Works), Ryu Seung-beom (Tazza: One Eyed Jack), and Kim Sung-kyun (Divorce Attorney Shin) among many others. Premiering this August 9, the action sci-fi was written by the original webtoon writer Kangfull, with co-directing by Kingdom’s PD Park In-je and PD Park Yoon-seo. [News1]
  • In more casting news, Ra Mi-ran (The Good Bad Mother) and Moon Sori (Race) are reviewing offers for the 1950s period drama Jung-nyun, as members of the famous women’s performing group. With production led by PD Jung Ji-in (The Red Sleeve Cuff) and writer Choi Hyo-bi (A Time Called You), Kim Tae-ri (Twenty Five Twenty One), Shin Ye-eun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse), and Kim Hieora (The Glory) are still in talks as well. [Newsen]

  • After newly jumping into drama production last year, LG confirmed that the fantasy thriller Hi Cookie will be releasing as an original series on their streaming platform U+ Mobile TV. Starring Nam Ji-hyun (Little Women), Choi Hyun-wook (Weak Hero Class 1), and Kim Mu-yeol (Trolley), the drama is set to launch in the latter half of this year. [MBC]
  • tvN’s My Lovely Liar released their first couple poster as well, with a skeptical Hwang Min-hyun (Alchemy of Souls) questioning if our heroine really knows him, while our superpowered Kim So-hyun (Love Alarm 2) maintains that she knows everything. Premiering next month on July 24, the mystery rom-com will have PD Nam Sung-woo (Love in Contract) at the helm with writing by Seo Jung-eun (Let Me Be Your Knight). [KBS]

1. I made the smart decision to drop Uncontrollably Fond pretty early on so I don’t have the baggage with this pairing as others do. I’ve warmed up considerably towards Suzy over the last couple of years and honestly, I’m just so, so happy Kim Woo-bin is back. And in a romcom too! The screenwriter being Kim Eun-sook, though, doesn’t exactly spark joy…

2. *Sigh* Relegated to second fiddle, AGAIN. There is no justice in dramaland. Park Jin-ju should be one of our most successful leading ladies, not be the token sassy friend of much newer, greener actors.

3. Hell of a cast for sure (Jo In-sung!!!), but the plot doesn’t interest me at all. I feel like superheroes wouldn’t translate well to the kdrama medium. And what it is with Disney+ snatching up all the A-listers for there uninspired projects?

4. Now THIS… this is an ensemble I’m here for. Not a single weak link in that lineup, I love them all. Happy pride month to me, indeed.

5. Greeeeeat, another new streaming platform. This is definitely not a field that’s already notorious for oversaturation and lagging numbers. I bet it’ll be extra tough to get (legal or otherwise) English subs for us international folks too. Just great.

6. Awww, they’re so cute! My interest for this drama has been steadily growing with every poster. Idk, I’m just really ready for Kim So-hyun’s return.

At least I won't be as tempted to watch it as I would if Park Jin-ju were the FL (since it's Disney+)

1. Kim Eun-sook + Lee Byung-heon is a head-scratching pairing of writer and PD. I can't see any common sensibility. I've only ever seen Kim Woo-bin and Suzy in one thing each and was neither impressed nor appalled, so no expectations there. I'm glad he's healthy enough to work steadily.

3. This sounds like a pastiche of 5 or 6 American superhero kid movies. The cast might make it worth a quick glance.

5. MDL calls this High Cookie, which gives an entirely different impression of what it might be about.

6. I'm trying not to get excited, but I'm getting excited.

Suzy is unrecognizable in the picture above. Excited for number 4.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought so! She looks completely different in that picture.

It’s Lee Byeoung Heon as a director I couldn’t give it a pass. Based on Be Melodramatic and Alice his sense of humor is totally my preference.

All shall come true, Tell me you love me and Jungnyun are all long listed for the watchlist. Jungnyun has the potential to be a Dear my friends in terms of a strong ensemble cast. We see the women in their current Ajumma state and their younger feisty selves going about their everyday life, in this case, being subjected to the trials and tribulations of women in a sexist world but when they meet up and perform they finally get ‘seen’ as their talents shine out.

Moving has a fantastic cast - Ryu Seung-Ryong!!!, but the availability of Disney + in Estonia drives me crazy. I have to nug our Inspira channel a bit.
but, sci fi. well, I guess practice makes perfect, one day? One day.... one day... keep on practicing...
Korean drama PDs should watch Hotel of Dead Alpinist, 1979. Thats the vibe I´d like in a sci fi.

1 - isn't this a little late for heartache soothing do-over with this pairing? It's been AGES, I kinda doubt even the most loyal fans didn't move on yet one way or another... But good for those who still haven't ofc.
3 - man, what a cast! And KINGDOM PD! But combo of genre and Mouse+ kills all the expectations or nearly so.
5 - oh, great, more weird-format streaming services... *rolls eyes*
6 - looks more like a couple ad (for lip balm or hair product) than a drama poster, but maybe that's just me.

I am saying this with some embarrassment but what the hell, here it comes. As infuriating and confounding as I found most of “UF”, I loved Kim Woobin in it and didn’t mind the pairing with Suzy who was serviceable and had chemistry with him. So, it would be hopefully good to see them act together again. I hope it will be at least half way decent.

I completely agree with you! I only recently watched a few episodes of UF but because a) it wasn't really grabbing me and b) I knew where it would end up, I moved on to other dramas. But I also really enjoyed Kim Woo-bin's performance in it and felt the same way about Suzy as I did when I watched "Start-Up"--she's not amazing, but she's fine, and unlike some other mediocre actresses, has chemistry with her co-starts. I often feel like I'm watching her acting rather than becoming a character, but if the script is good, I'm absolutely open to watching these two in another drama together.

ah, I know what you mean by actors who act instead of becoming a character! there are surprisingly a fair amount of successful actresses who fall into this category. when that happens, watching them on the screen becomes a chore instead of the joy it should be. I'm surprised how many actresses have managed to keep finding project after project even when they really don't have the talent. maybe it's because they look the part and work well with others, have a good personality, etc. I could name names but won't. I think we all know though, and have a running list of actors and actresses who act instead of be.

1) It's not a couple that I really wished to see again. Kim Woo-Bin didn't film a lot of romance, so I would have prefered to see him with another actress to show something new.

2) Park Jin-ju is the main lead actress for this drama? The main female characters needs a good voice and she has a great voice and I don't know if Shin Hyun Bin sings.

3) Sci-Fi drama.... even if the cast is great, it means nothing in Kdrama world.

4) A lot of actresses in this future drama!

5) Not a new subject in Kdrama, but I like the actors.

6) Not a fan of this poster and I realized I didn't like the PD's last drama neither the writer's last drama... Please, be good!

All I want is for Park Jin-ju to sing in a drama. I am obsessed with her voice and I have VERY high standards for singers.

Thank you for alerting me to PJJ’s wonderful voice. I had no idea. A clip for others like me who didn’t know: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yBvnOyyMgQ

How much more talented can she get? Cast this woman as a lead, you undiscerning so and sos!

1. I had a couple of LOL moments in Uncontrollably Fond, but it wasn't a great drama, and kind of depressing. That being said, I no longer watch KES dramas, so will be skipping this, I hope this is nice and fluffy for those who will watch.

2. I didn't are for Sound of Magic, so this is just a maybe.

3. That is a cast and I like Sci Fi, so 👍🏿👍🏿.

4. Kim Tae Ri, Ra Mi Ran, AND. Moon So Ri. 😍

5. I hope I can find Hi Cookie somewhere, I love Ham Ji Hyun!!!

6. I really hate the photoshop in the poster, but I look forward to this drama!!

Seconding the thumbs up for Moving. All the concerns about kdrama versions of comic book projects, disappointing sci-fi and streaming from the mouse house are valid, BUT...for me, HHJ is chocolate, oxy and October Pippin apples all rolled up in one stunning package. The only way I could be more geeked out would be if Lee Bo-young has a cameo as her sage, elegant unnie.

Suzy and Kim Woo-bin in a romcom probably shouldn’t happen? Moreover if they want to wipe clean our memories of Uncontrollably Fond. As far as I know neither are great in comedy and I personally think they haven’t had remarkable romance project in the past. The writer writing romcom is questionable. So how much can the director do for this drama?

I’d prefer if the director do Thirty with Kim Woo-bin, Kang Ha-neul, and Junho.

Oh, that would be a dream! Twenty is the only Woobs performance I've seen, and he was green but did fine at comedy. I agree with low expectations for KES being able to pull off fluff, rom-com, or comedy - I really did not like either the humor or the romance in Secret Garden, although granted that was a long time ago, and there were very funny bits in Goblin but they seemed more to the actors' credit than hers.

Kim Woo-bin talked about Thirty in an interview before. I understand it's much more difficult to gather the trio with Lee Byeong-hun now compared to almost 10 years ago when they were all still newbies.

I was under Hyun Bin's spells during Secret Garden, I swore I loved it during its run lol. What was I thinking😂

Eh, I loved Uncontrollably Fond despite hating bad endings. The last few episodes were good and KWB and Suzy definitely had good chemistry. This is a pairing I’d love to see again.

KES tho, is very questionable. I loved Goblin and hated DOTS at just about the same degree. Eternal King was just a different level of boring and terrible, but Mr Sunshine was amazing. So yea, very hit and miss here.
