[Beanie Recs] Just want Junho

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. Each week we’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short. Respond below!

Shameless request here, since I’m relatively new to K-dramas and definitely new to Junho. But not for long! What are some of his better dramas? Let me know what to watch, and in what order, because two episodes of King the Land each week are not enough to cover this obsession.

Have a very particular drama itch that needs scratching? In need of a Beanie Rec? Email us at hello @ dramabeans.com and we’ll feature your topic in a future post.

I absolutely loved him in Chief Kim. It was such a great drama and Seo Yul was a very interesting character. Junho is great with facial expressions and he and Nam Goong-min really matched well together on the screen. I would love to see them in another drama together, like a thriller.

Oh, this is an easy one for me. It’s Good Manager/Chief Kim. Some folks think his acting is grumpy and wooden. I say, sure, maybe. Not really. I quite think he fits the role.

But really…I’m just in it to watch him eat with flourish and gusto.

Here’s a super-cut of all the scenes of him doing so, courtesy of the Beanies in the original weekly recap postings. Trust me. No translated subtitles needed.

Oh, and I feel I should also say that Red Sleeve Cuff is not for the faint at heart. No amount of post-military abs could redeem the watch for me.

In fact, I got so furious at that drama that I actually saw red and dropped it after a serious investment, maybe a bit more than halfway through. People utterly trapped in their expected roles with no escape…thwarted good (and sometimes bad) intentions all over the place. It’s like the “no escape” brand of existentialism distilled into a sageuk. AARGH.

You, dear question-asker, may adore this high-grade, super-charged emotional manipulation though!

Your description of RED SLEEVE CUFF is actually why I love it so much. No show that I have ever seen has so thoroughly explored what was so wrong about the Neo-Confucianist society that was Joseon. Quite literally no one was a free person- not even the King. Everyone was trapped, just as you said: A brutal version of NO EXIT indeed and yes, the ultimate existentialist Sageuk.

Thank you, @oldawyer! This is a super comforting response!!

First, I feel affirmed that I saw and felt what I thought I saw and felt while watching the drama...and second, I get to hear first-hand about how and why other folks enjoy different things from me. I appreciate your taking the time.

I agree with you about the art- the show was a visual treat with top notch cinematography.

The Red Sleeve was such a painful watch throughout. Yet it stays true to how it probably was. In reality we can still see the after effects of existential crisis that most eastern societies suffered from for centuries on end at the hands of the conservative mores of the society in general and S.Korea in particular. It's raw and visceral in many ways, even though there was a concious attempt to make it palatable to the TV audience. For example, the humor was quite on spot, though eventually it does not stay with you. The romantic scenes are super cute. But a romance between a man who has complete authority over a woman, who eventually gets literally delivered to his bed neatly tied in a bow is not my idea of an ideal romance. But that's why The Red sleeve, even with all its cliches and inconsistencies, worked. A bit more over and it would have been as revolting as 'The Concubine' was in terms of drama (evidence suggests he might have punished everyone around her to submit her to compliance). I have always been a fan of keeping the 'feel' of an era when working that time period, Red Sleeve did it beautifully and then some. Seeing it through the 21st century lens, I have not disliked a leading man as much as I disliked Yi San as a person, but he was a product of his time and that speaks volumes about the story teller. Junho is not a great actor, but his hard work was evident and the role suited him, and the rest of the cast was pitch perfect. The chemistry between the leads was electrifying (which is sorely missing in King the land, it's as weird as the title itself). It's not a drama that I would ever rewatch, but those who would like to torture themselves with the knowledge of how awful that time period was for everyone or are a fan of Junho's visuals, must watch it.

@attiton: You just channelled me. I found it infuriating most of the time even if liked the acting of some of the cast. So much of the plot was a bizarre mix of the implausible and all too realistic oppression of women. The last 2 eps were gut wrenching and horrific.

Required fields are marked *

I mean, I applaud you for even attempting the ending given how we agree.

I don’t remember what it was that tipped me off, but (in retrospect) it might have been the way the drama just blew past the normal semi-resolution in eps. 8-10. There was no resolution whatsoever.

This situation sent me over here to Dramabeans to read about what I was going to get in the second half…and good lord. Not for me.

However (하..지..만), given the way the “likes” shook out in this thread, it clearly struck a more positive nerve with way more people!

It was horrific. I am clearly a masochist.
It was filmed beautifully and visually, some parts were gorgeous but to see the brutality of that era towards disempowered women was difficult to say the least. No amount of silk finery and Junho could erase that horror show. That era’s horrific and retrograde views embedded social, economic and legal hierarchies and norms that still survive to this day.

1

Well, I am one of those. I watched Wok of Love and Rain or Shine and I could say his expressions didn't change. It's stiff/wooden/grumpy at its best. Sorry, he's quite similar with Lee Dong Wook in that regard. Personally, it's real difficult to warm up to his acting.

Chief Kim/Good Manager where he plays an excellent antihero
Just between lovers is an absolute must, angsty and sweet
I really enjoyed Wok of Love at the time which is a lot of eccentric fun (I remember a talking horse, although I don’t think it was received well and it only talked once.)
Red Sleeve, I avoid sageuks but the actors were great

It’s not a bad order to watch in as it intersperses comedy with the feels, but you can also choose to start or end with your favorite genres.

Agree, I loved his performance in Chief Kim although he's much easier to like in Just Between Lovers. He also did a good job as the shouty/softie chef in Wok of Love, which I enjoyed despite it never being quite sure what kind of show it wanted to be.

And I'll put in another plug for the 2015 movie Twenty, which is bro-tastic and sometimes crude silly fun.

Has anyone seen Confession?

I have seen tvN’s CONFESSION (2019) and Junho was terrific as a lawyer in this mystery but once again he played a guy wrapped super uptight as he did in my other Junho dramas: SBS’s WOK OF LOVE (2018) and THE RED SLEEVE (2021) both available on Viki US.

I am waiting for him to take on a role (against type) where he lets it all hang out like Kim Min-jae did as Moo-hak in DALI (2021) (Viki US). I am told Junho did that early on in CHIEF KIM/GOOD MANAGER (2017) (Viki US).

It is a massive human tragedy that this post does not include photos.

(I know the Beanie Recs don't, perhaps so we aren't swayed, but if ever there were an argument for an exception it should be Junho up there making it in one of his roles as a lawyer with a sharp suit and a sneer.)

Wow, talk about cat man. So sweet. I think it’s amazing that a show about living alone as a celebrity is such a great pull when the trend for single home dwelling is increasing. However, we have the advantage of being able to go out as and when we want, they don't so home becomes even more of a special place. I can’t believe they happily let people see their private space when that is their only place of real peace.

You could say I'm not a fan (or at least not a good one) because I've seen him in several roles without noticing it's the same person ("oh that's the guy who played..."), but on the other hand I've liked his performance in each one: Memories of the Sword, Chief Kim, Just Between Lovers, well not so much Wok of Love but that was probably the character, but my sentimental favorite is Memory.

I would say the parody of Cinderella Sister😂. Not only you get to see Junho, but you also get to see 5 extra good looking "actors" as well.

I would say good luck in your journey discovering Junho's work because most of the time new fans end up surfing Youtube and they'll be trapped.

Joke aside my personal favorite is still Chief Kim, his character is delightful. In my dream I would ask Park Jae-bom to write the prequel about Seo Yul.

No one smolders quite like Junho. So it’s no wonder he’s excelled in melodramas like JBL and TRS. However, the few moments he breaks through that gruffness. *Swoon*

I think Wok of Love might have shown his sweeter side but that show was just so uneven I dropped it early on. Maybe I can do a fast forward of just his scenes?

I have Chief Kim on my list. Will bump it up thanks to beanies.

Required fields are marked *

I am not sure he truly smoulders, but he does have a look that can raise heartbeats. I think he did the best emoting in Red Sleeve cuff. His single minded persuit of Deok Im was impressively done, and unlike other dramas where leads fall for someone without rhyme or reason, this one was done beautifully. She resents him till the end, loving and hating him at the same time, however he too develops a resentment for her at the end for leaving him unfulfilled in so many levels, and that's where I found him most vulnerable, as well as most effective of all the dramas I have seen him in so far. He wanted to own her, and he realizes it at her death bed that he had it all wrong. The grief with which he censors the court lady years later for daring to tell him how Deok Im loved him, which she never told him herself, was one of the most heartbreaking scene I have watched. The line 'please ignore me if you meet me'....it took me a while to get over the tragedy this drama was. Junho was at his best in this one. I am yet to see him at his light hearted best so I will probably hold my judgement until I see his other works (King the land is so far completely flat).

Required fields are marked *

Haha! Honestly, the K-dramas are so chaste that it's hard to remember who does it well (the ones who got lots of chances, like LMH, or PSJ, don't have it in them). But the ones who do jump to mind right away:

Park Hyung Sik: He romances like no other. The way he looks at Han So Nee in Soundtrack #1 at the table when she is writing and he is listening to music, that almost kiss hospital scene in Strong woman, the candle scene in Hwarang, the rainy day car scene in High Society, or even that very tiny, longing filled scene in OBY whe he wakes up from his injury and finds Jay Yi sleeping on his desk – this man is just getting started. He just needs to refuse all further unrequited, lovelorn love stories going forward. Dr Slump, I am looking at you, you better measure up (if anyone can drag the goddess of fish kisses out of the fish kissing slump, it's him).
Song Kang: This guy has it in spades and he brought it full force in Nevertheless. Add another few years of experience on him and we might be looking at scorching screen.
Hwang In-Youp: Another one to watch out for. His eyes speak volumes and they definitely smoulder. The few scene he has with Ga-Young in True beauty are searing hot.
Kim Woo Bin: Now this guy definitely smoulders in my books. I am just not sure of his overall acting capabilities yet, but haven't watched him much either.
Kang Tae Oh - this guy can act. He got some of that smoulders on in Run On, and was absolutely, adorably, in love in Att Woo. I would definitely watch out for him in 2024.

2
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Oh PSH adores like nobody’s business. Is that smoldering, I don’t know, nor care. (My personal favorite is Happiness.)

I agree Song Kang has that something. But he looks so young he makes this ajumma a little uncomfortable. Good idea to give him a few years.

Somehow I’ve watched very little of the others so I may need to do, ahem, some research. But KWB’s eyes were definitely smoldery behind that mask in the Black Knight posters.

Thanks for the list!

2

@indyfan I am thrilled to find another Park Hyung Sik smoulders fan right here (the Junho crowd might kill me for highjacking this thread haha!) But he smoulders like no other, across board. I have seen many many many actors across the continent. No one comes close (other than a handful Indian subcontinental actors, a couple of middle eastern ones, and some of the Hollywood actors - RDJ for one, Daniel Craig for another, Richard Gere in his hay days, and of course, Gregory Peck - the father of smoulders). Park Hyung Sik is THAT good. In Happiness he brought on his full force of romance eyes, though I wish he had gotten at least a few seconds of a proper intimate scenes with her to get on those smoulders (his stepping close to her in 'You' scene on the terrace is knee weakening). I better run before this turns into a thesis on PHS's acting prowess.

2

Wow, Minnie--my thoughts exactly.
Plus: Lee Jae-Wook, Jang Dong-Yoon and Lee Do-Hyun.

Since you are new to Junho, you might not know that he is a singer in the group 2pm. I recommend their songs My House, Come Back When you Hear this Song, Make It, Put Your Hands Up, Go Crazy, and 10 out of 10. He's also done some solo songs but I'm not as familiar with those.
Most kpop groups will have little reality/variety/vlog shows that help you get to know the members. I'm not a big enough fan of 2pm to know what their shows are called but I'm sure other beanies can give you the details if you are interested.
For dramas I recommend Wok of Love and Chief Kim.
I know other people liked Just Between Lovers and The Red Sleeve but I wouldn't recommend them even though Junho was great in both. I dropped JBL because it was too dark and sad for me. I dropped The Red Sleeve because the story was outlandish.

I'll go with his two lawyer (and lesser acknowledged) dramas - Confession (2019) and Memory (2015).

Confession takes some time to build up then it really takes off. It slows a little in the middle, but it remains engrossing throughout. One of the best lawyer kdramas out there.

In Memory, Junho is the second lead. The main lead is played by Lee Sung-min, who turns in another masterclass acting about a lawyer hit with Alzheimer's. It's a tough to watch emotionally, but worth it nevertheless.
