[Beanie Recs] Bold females that take the lead

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. Each week we’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short. Respond below!

I’m new to K-dramas, but I have been loving the stories where the female lead is bold and fierce and takes the lead — she knows what she wants and is the one to put the moves on the male lead, etc. Hotel del Luna is one of my favorite examples of this but I’m looking for more recs! Bonus points if there is magic thrown into the plot, too.

Have a very particular drama itch that needs scratching? In need of a Beanie Rec? Email us at hello @ dramabeans.com and we’ll feature your topic in a future post.

There's no magic involved (unless you count their chemistry 😉), but Goo Se Ra from Into the Ring/Memorials fits the bill! Into the Ring is a political satire/comedy, but don't let that put you off. It's also a hidden gem of a rom-com (one of the best, in my opinion). The FL is fierce, passionate, and pursues her own sense of justice (and the ML). The ML is no pushover, but he lets the FL push him around. She's the initiator and pursuer, but they equally support and love each other. Bonus: no noble idiocy or last 1/3 breakup! It's quirky, well-written, and beautifully filmed.

I hope you like it if you try it!!😊 It's a little bit (*litttttle bit*) like Parks and Recreation, with Goo Se Ra like an underdog Leslie Knope who never found her niche as a channel for her passion and intensity. I absolutely adore it and am always ready to recommend it!😄👍

Another Into the ring fan here 😄
That is an "office drama" where humor worked for me.

Yay!!!😊🎉 And I agree about the humor - it hit the right tone for me, and the comedy stayed throughout, even after more layers of background were revealed.

There’s no magic involved, but one of the strongest, most career-minded female leads that comes to mind is the titular character in Rookie Historian Gu Hae-ryung.

The drama has a relatively strong romance plot, and a handsome ML. But the show (in my memory)—and this is simply to set your expectations—follows a pretty traditional, political-scheming sageuk plot.

So, you have to enjoy sageuks, which is a real distance from Hotel del Luna, but our Rookie Historian knows exactly what she wants for the entire show.

That's a great recommendation! Rookie Historian was my very first sageuk (although not a traditional one, which worked in its favor!). I remember it fondly 😊

Extraordinary You : She decided to change her destiny. It's not really magic but there is some fantasy elements.

Mr Sunshine : it's half - half. She's very fierce and know what she wants. But for the love story, she's new to it and the story doesn't focus so much on this part. Both female characters are fierce.

The King's Affection : She hides her identity so she needs to be strong. For the love story, they both took initiatives :p

Na Hee-do If 2321!
She was a teenager but was brave, bold and willing to fight for what she wants in her life. Her dedication to her sport was inspiring. And so was her approach to her crush/first love. She made the first move!
I pretend that the current timeline Hee-do that the drama showed us is a fake 😅

No magic in this drama, but in "Search: WWW", the female leads drive the story, their lives, relationships and the businesses they're in. The male leads aren't exactly pushovers, but they show great respect for the women and their decisions. Maybe WWW in the title isn't just world wide web, but also woman woman woman :)

I think that beanie could love Alchemy of Souls Season 2 (but Season 1 should be watched before).

Alchemy was the first one I thought of too. But I would argue that both parts have the requests in them. Naksu-as-Mudeok in part 1 had a different set of motivations going on, but she knows what she wants and isn't afraid to take drastic steps to get there. She's had her physical strength stripped from her, so she goes about acquiring strength in a different way, and ends up showing incredible growth over the 20 episodes. I agree her part 2 incarnation is like this too, but in different ways reflecting her different situation.

Maybe Angel's Last Mission - I feel like this is one of those 'he fell first but she fell harder' kind of shows, and the FL's (played by Shin Hye-sun!!!) tenacity and unwaveringly bold love for the ML was 😍Talking about it makes me want to rewatch actually ahahaha!

ALSO, the secondary couple from Welcome to Waikiki 2 - the sister was bold and it complemented the SML's (he's not really the SML but he's one of the three main leads) golden retriever energy.

Last rec - the dynamic from It's Okay To Not Be Okay also seems to match what this beanie is looking for!

Definitely can't go wrong with "It's Okay To Not Be Okay" if you're looking for a bold and fierce female lead who's not shy about making the first move on the male lead! The FL's (unfiltered? brash?) honesty and unconventional insights are some of my favourite qualities of the character.

Females taking the lead ? Search WWW.
FL who knows what she wants: Sell your haunted house, Run on, Chicago typewriter, Love to hate you, Cheat on me of you can, Hello Monster, Doctor John, Into the ring.
In If you wish upon me, FL is also the first to declare and move. But I have erased this drama from my memory so I'm not sure I can recommend it.

Looking at the titles of my drama spreadsheet, it seems to me that a few actresses have several roles with more self-determination than the average FL: Jang Na Ra, Lee Se Young, Choi Soo Young.

The female leads in Hotel del Luna, It's Okay to Not Be Okay, and Itaewon Class are usually grouped together as bold and fierce and knowing what they want and putting the moves on the male leads (but I'll have to say I hated the female lead in Itaewon Class).

Kim Yuri of The Law Cafe is who immediately came to mind when I saw this topic. For whatever flaws the show might have, she is one of the boldest, most straight forward Kdrama heroines. She goes for what she wants, she's direct about her feelings and thoughts, and she took the lead in most situations.

Lee Bo-young in God's Gift: 14 Days leaps to mind.

Other bold and fierce women in kdramas I can think of include Lee Yu-ri in Father Is Strange and Lee Si-young in Lookout.

When I saw this topic, my immediate thought was strong and dynamic actresses who can handle a variety of challenges as the lead.

Lee Yu-Ri has put together a good string of bold characters in Becoming Witch, Lie after Lie and Spring Becomes Spring.

Jo Yeo Jeong has made an excellent career taking demanding and challenging roles in movies (Casa Amor, The Servant, Obsessed) and iconic characters TV series that are focused, driven and unusual (Babysitter, Ms. Perfect, Cheat on Me if You Can, High Class).

The OG of self-directed kdrama heroines is Kim Sam Soon, all the others came after her. But no magic and a tsundere male lead that some people have a hard time with.

Under the Queen's Umbrella is in a league of its own. Possibly the best story narrative and almost no plot holes, it is outstanding (the fact that all the Grand Prince are eye candies and each of them have their back stories fleshed out is an added bonus).

Oh My Ghost has a fierce woman as well as a supernatural element: a man-hungry female ghost inhabits the body of a meek trainee chef and persistently tries to seduce her boss. Hilarious performances by Kim Seul-Gi (as the ghost) and Park Bo-Young (as the timid apprentice chef possessed by the ghost).

My Liberation Notes - Mi-Jeong gets straight to the point when she tells the passive Mr. Gu, "Worship me." (The fantasy is in the mind of the viewer who wishes she were Mi-Jeong!)

LBY in Agency definitely takes the cake in the strongest of female leads, especially when she is also stomping all over the unscrupulous men she competes with in her road to success. The love aspect is secondary, but a nice touch. Her leaving her high-powered job was the only message I didn't care for from that Kdrama.

If it’s just about strong female characters can we have the Ajumma from Healer. No romance in her life but she was proactive in her career choices and making a real difference in her industry, competing and consistently beating her rivals even when they played dirty.

I would say no, even though the performance was good because she could never really challenge her fate and come back after such a long time. And the 2FL did nothing wrong that needed an intervention in regard to her child.

In terms of magic and liking the ML first, I’d go with ANOTHER OH HAE-YOUNG. I wouldn’t call the FL strong in the typical sense, but I liked how she wasn’t the most likeable and was unafraid to show her emotions.

I’LL GO TO YOU WHEN THE WEATHER IS NICE. The drama showed the magic in the mundane but also the horrors too

I need to watch RULER OF YOUR OWN WORLD! Gong Hyo-Jin was also a plucky heroine in THE PRODUCERS. Gotta give it her tho, she comes to kdramaland every few years, stars in mega hits, and her dramas always become trendy. Seriously, I feel like the success of WHEN THE CAMELLIA BLOOMS started the trend of serial killers in rom coms. While I don’t like Lee Min-ho, I’m hoping their new drama will start some new trend…(pls drama gods 🙏)

Wow! Bold females abound in dramaland. Ones who take the lead?

The top of my list for you to check out is Mishil in Queen Seondeok. But I guess what you're looking for here is Bidam and Deokman's love story.

And then Ha Ji-won in Empress Ki. She literally took the lead here.

And Iron Empress. It's my favorite Chae Si-ra drama till date.

Bloody Heart : Kang Hanna and Park Ji-yeon. I expected Kang Hanna to deliver as usual.

The beauty of these three aforementioned is that it is packed with women who are 1.) not anachronistic in time, and they were other bunch of women taking minor or major roles in the same drama.

For other leading women dramas

Recipe For Farewell : Kim Seo-hyung.
Call It Love? : Lee Sung-kyung.
Mr. Queen : Shin Hye-sun.
Angel's Last Mission - Love : Shin Hye-sun.
The Devil's Judge : Kim Min-jung.
You Are My Spring : Seo Hyun-Jin (This is a personal favorite and you won't be disappointed).
Kiss Sixth Sense : Seo Ji-hye.( I think this fits well in what you're looking for).

Wait, no QUEEN INHYUN'S MAN (can be found subbed as QUEEN AND I on YT) mention yet? Heresy! Granted, FL is not as fierce or badass amazon-like as most ladies talked about here - more on the cute/bubbly side - but she certainly is confident and assertive about what she wants, be it her career, telling (and flipping) off her clingy ex or making impulsive bold moves on ML because he's way too hot to resist^^ There is a time travel and some magic as well. Absolute chemistry winner and just a fantastic romance show overall.

Because it's an old drama? I don't think there are other objective downsides to it, it's universally loved for many reasons.

You're lucky to have many shows in that list. Mine has been depressingly short for a while.

Required fields are marked *

Not about it being old. I loved Chuno. It's the number of hours I need to give. You see, I watched Boys over flowers and followed it by the most bi-polar (for want of a truly apt word) Heirs and got singed (WHAT was that show btw? Dang, what a terrible waste of time. I have not dared to watch any other Lee Min Ho shows after that because he has about three total expressions for everything and his characters don't go anywhere). Suspicious partner made me gag, She was pretty made me mad, The Red Sleeve made me too sad..... so now I tread carefully before deciding to invest in any show, old or new. So there you go.

Required fields are marked *

Do you also sometimes drop or skim? That can help this sort of anxiety, I find. NBD if something doesn’t click for you. If you want to know what happens, our fearless leaders here on DB have your back!

I “hate-dropped” Red Sleeve Cuff way far into the drama and just read the weecaps to get the plot finished in my head. It helped me not feel like I invested too terribly much time (although it was still hours and hours) once I could quite clearly tell that the show was going to be way, way, way too oppressively horrible for me.

2

I absolutely hated Jun Ho's character in Red Sleeve. I know it's a true story and might have played out as such, but while it 'sang' of a great love, to me it was just an abusive use of power and borderline grooming of someone vulnerable. The end smothered whatever little love I had for the show - I knew it was coming but it was too much to take in at the end. The pair was beautiful though and he is a good actor. It's sad that it's also one of the very few well made shows that did not lose track of the narrative.

I have dropped plenty. Itawon class being at the top of the list. But I can't FF a show to its end because the story does not make sense and interplay of relationships is what I watch these dramas for in the first place. The one I Fastforwarded and most of it still made sense was 'The Crowned clown'. I have been sitting on The eternal king that my husband desparately wants to watch because I am so wary of investing so many hours on what might turn out to be another nonsense. I am ok with watching average shows with 'holey' plots if I am engaged with the leads and invested in them.

2

Then you have nothing to worry about - it's only 16 episodes and they are 42-45 minutes long - far cry from current 1hour+ cable average)))

Ha, finally someone else not liking SUSPICIOUS PARTNER! I mean, romance part wasn't too bad, but that thriller half... and it was so unnecessarily draggy that it lost any focus or point midway... *sigh*

Your passionate roast rant reminds me of the time when I just got into kdramas and was naive enough to listen to other people's recommendations mindlessly. That led to me watching many shows I should've never touch, getting into some epic fights with rabid fans over it and ending up seriously disillusioned with the whole thing)))

@gikata: LOL!! Now I am even more intersted in watching it asap. I will update my thoughts once I watch it.

Suspicious partner: For me it was the FL. I cannot stand when FLs are showcased as dumb dumbs that need to be rescued at all times. Convulated plot, even more convulated love story of two very good looking people who somehow missed the bus of actually developing a relationship and went from foes to friends for no good reason other than existing with each other, and then the annoying crime plot that kept going round and round. Thankfully I watched 'What happens to my family' and she turned out to be the sweetheart of the show. So good. Now that is a show for which I would happily give another 50 hours.

1

Typical k-romcom then *evil grin* I'm joking ofc, but it really happens way too often.

1

It hasn't aired yet but will be starting this week - See You In My 19th Life, unless they make DRASTIC changes to the webcomic (but based on the trailers I think her character will be the same).

Graceful Family also has the most badass FL I've seen.

Not magic, but a bit of horror (VERY SLIGHT) - go for Happiness. It's got one of the most kickass FL who takes charge (sometimes over the ML) and takes no prisoners. Han Yo Joo is fabulous.

Of course, The Glory, it's all about the female lead. Against female antagonist.

You want magic and a strong female lead? How the heck did I forget - :'Strong woman do bong soon'. It's a laughathon and possibly the cutest love birdie leads in the dramaland (so much so that I wish the ML would actually break out of that mould now). It's second season is coming too so a good time to watch it. (Tip: FF the gangster parts starting episode 8 unless you like them, you won't miss much).
