My Perfect Stranger: Episodes 5-6
by quirkycase
Operation Stop-A-Murder is underway for our time-traveling teacher who puts his plan into motion only to discover he’s more in the dark than he’d realized. Thankfully, he’s got help in the form of our high school returnee who gathers information of her own. The two are starting to recognize just how entangled they are as they slowly open up to each other and find their goals might not be so different.
EPISODES 5-6
We dive back in with Hae-joon trying to locate Joo-young, who’s gone missing. Yoon-young correctly predicts from the manuscript that they’ll find the teacher unharmed near the river. Sure enough, Joo-young is huddled by the river bank and suspiciously screams, “It wasn’t me!” in a panic when they approach her. She then acts like she didn’t just freak out and says she was merely lost, refusing to admit someone was after her even when Hae-joon spots a man in a blue hat lurking nearby.
There’s nothing more they can do with Joo-young insisting everything is fine, so Hae-joon and Yoon-young head to the teahouse to finally exchange intel. Yoon-young shows him Mi-sook’s manuscript, a story future Mi-sook calls a “confession of sorts” about a crime too perfect to keep secret. Yoon-young is sure Mi-sook is their killer (she might be a smidge biased), but Hae-joon’s journalistic nature makes him more cautious, so he’s not willing to accept the manuscript at face value yet.
Things take a more personal turn when Yoon-young spots Hee-seob and Soon-ae at another table in the teahouse. Yoon-young once again starts a fight with Hee-seob but calms once Soon-ae soundly rejects Hee-seob’s feelings because she’s already dating Bum-ryong. Huh. Neither Yoon-young nor Hee-seob saw that coming and give identical shocked poses.
After that, Yoon-young has no choice but to level with Hae-joon that the teens are her future parents. She even shares her mom’s story and why she’s intent on keeping her parents apart, even if that means she disappears. When Hae-joon puts together that the matchbox was found near Soon-ae’s body, he suspects she’s yet another victim of the killer.
Even though Hae-joon has started sharing info with Yoon-young, he’s been pretty closed off about himself. However, in response to her vulnerability and honesty, he does some sharing of his own. He’s not an expert on moms since his own took off after he was born, but he assures Yoon-young her mom surely knew she was loved seeing as Yoon-young loves her enough to die for her. He shares his theory that Soon-ae didn’t die by suicide and urges Yoon-young to focus on protecting her mom rather than erasing her own existence.
What really convinces Yoon-young that her mom was murdered is the “suicide” letter. When Soon-ae hands her an apology letter at school, Yoon-young connects the dots. Her mom always apologized with a letter, and Yoon-young realizes that’s exactly what the supposed suicide letter was: an apology after their fight.
Now on the same page, Yoon-young and Hae-joon are both invested in stopping the murders and work together. Hae-joon tails Joo-young each night to protect her and try to identify the man in the blue hat; according to the owner of the teahouse, they argue the night Joo-young dies. But, as always, there’s a complication. Joo-young is on the run as a political protestor, hence her caginess, and takes off when the police show up to arrest her at school. Yoon-young chases her but ends up as a hostage at knifepoint. Hae-joon isn’t far behind and manages to wrestle the knife away, and then to Joo-young’s shock, he and Yoon-young hide her from the cops.
Given that she’s in hiding now, Joo-young can’t go to the teahouse that night, but Hae-joon does. He waits until he spots the man in the blue hat arrive… and it’s Hee-seob. But he’s there to meet Bum-ryong, not Joo-young. He confronts Bum-ryong about his penchant for stealing. His most recent item? Joo-young’s ring. So things are not looking good for Bum-ryong.
When they leave, Hae-joon follows Bum-ryong who goes straight to Joo-young’s motel, supposedly to return the ring. Just as it looks like Bum-ryong might be his guy, Hae-joon spots Min-soo nearby viciously kicking his little sister Mi-sook on the ground. This man is awful, but thanks to his powerful family, the cops released him back into the wild.
Then, Hee-seob saunters up to the motel in his blue hat, and Hae-joon is back to square one with all three main suspects still in the running. After he arrives home, Hae-joon can’t bring himself to tell Yoon-young the man in the blue hat is her father, so he lies that he didn’t see the man’s face. So much for honesty and working together.
While Hae-joon continues mulling over what he’s learned, Yoon-young has a sleepover with Soon-ae and is forced to listen to her mom fret over her growing feelings for Hee-seob. It’s looking like there’s no stopping that feelings train because Soon-ae is already starry-eyed, talking about how Hee-seob shines. Yoon-young recognizes the wording from Soon-ae’s novel stolen by Mi-sook and realizes the novel was a love letter to Hee-seob who was the first person to truly see Soon-ae.
Hae-joon continues trying to save Joo-young and gets a lesson in the butterfly effect when his actions have serious unintentional consequences. He has Principal Yoon keep cop Dong-shik occupied for the night so he can’t catch Joo-young. Hae-joon safely gets her on a bus out of town the next morning, successfully preventing her murder (official documentation changes and everything).
That’s when events take a turn. A fire breaks out at a house nearby, which happens to be where Dong-shik’s kids stayed overnight since he couldn’t pick them up. The kids make it out, but barely – Dong-shik and Hae-joon have to go inside the burning building to save one of them.
It seems obvious that their presence alone is going to change the timeline and events in unpredictable ways. Hae-joon has been actively trying to save Joo-young, so how did he not consider that doing so might result in new victims? I guess all that time traveling made him overconfident, and he forgot how little control he truly has.
The close call with the kids hits Hae-joon hard, and he unfairly takes his anger out on Yoon-young. He finally shares that he’s going to be one of the killer’s victims and blames her for being the most unexpected variable. He’s way out of line – he is the one who freaking hit her with his car in the first place – and says some harsh things.
He does immediately regret it and apologizes soon after, ready to tell her the truth about her dad. Yoon-young hasn’t been sitting around twiddling her thumbs, though, and has already identified blue hat man herself. However, it’s not Hee-seob she sees wearing the hat but her uncle BAEK YOO-SEOB, Hee-seob’s older brother.
Hae-joon can’t believe he missed that Yoo-seob has been in the background this whole time, completely unnoticed and unsuspected by everyone. In the epilogue, we see that Yoo-seob was waiting for someone at the café and ran into Hee-seob on his way inside. When Hee-seob said he liked his hat, Yoo-seob gave it to him and left the café.
Assuming there’s only one blue hat in all of Woojung-ri, Yoo-seob is looking like a solid suspect. We don’t know anything about him yet, except that Yoon-young does tell Hae-joon that she doesn’t much like her uncle who her dad adores. Yoon-young recalls her mom yelling at her dad for taking better care of Yoo-seob than of them.
I imagine the case is going to get more complicated from here now that Hae-joon and Yoon-young have officially changed the past, which could render much of their knowledge moot. I wonder if the manuscript is going to change like the official documentation on the first victim did. Hopefully Hae-joon has learned his lesson about trying to be a time-traveling superhero and starts working with Yoon-young in earnest. Because I think this situation is going to take both of their brainpower to navigate.

I'm glad we finally reached this point by the end of this week's episodes. To be fair to our leads, they're virtual strangers thrown together into a very weird situation, but I really wanted to shake some sense into them.
It was like watching someone who's never watched a time-traveling movie or a k-drama thriller or anythriller for that matter. Knowledge is power in these situations kids so please talk to each other and share information faster!

On the contrary, I felt like HJ watched so many time travel movies that he thought he could control the whole situation. 😆 He didn't even thought it was necessary to give a warning to the woman he dragged with him to 1987. 🤦♀️
YY was grieving and didn't know people were going to die. After he told her she started to share her story. So she actually didn't frustrate me.

To be honest, a lot of my impatience was also because it just felt like they talked very slowly 😂. I haven't felt that way for other characters but it just feels like it takes these two ages to finish a sentence 😭.

I've been waiting impatiently for this show to end to binge it, and this comment makes me a bit worried. This is a directorial decision to create fake tension or pretend something is more serious than it really is. I always hate this tactic. Now I'm wary of this show.

@midnight I'm sorry. 😞
In my humble opinion, the show has a nice balance, and they're handling the thriller well.
The weird tension between the characters is because they're strangers, so there's this awkwardness in their relationship.

Thanks for the recap quirkycase!
I don't know if it was overconfidence or desperation —or both— that made him act the way he did, but I'm glad that now he seems to have his feet on the ground. Our boy finally ate his Snickers bar.
I'm really worried about all the changes that will occur. They can't get new information from the future, so there's no way to check the changes that they're making. If they're not careful, maybe the murderer will try to frame them or kill them.
The uncle being the killer could be another another trick, but at the same time, it fits really well with the future we know. If the dad knew something about it, that would explain his drinking problem. He seemed to have an unhealthy relationship with his hyung.
On a lighter note, can we talk about the mom falling for the dad? That scene at the cafe was lovely. I want more scenes between them. And I really like to see the leads interact with their family members. It's just too cute, especially the harabojis, they're fun.
I'm excited for next week.

I'm curious about the changes too. When the 1st murder disappeared from the official case file, I was hoping they'd check the manuscript to see if that changed too. Maybe that'll happen next week.

For a sec I thought the photos were going to change, I mean, the victim was going to change.
I was expecting all the pictures and the newspapers to have different/new information.
Let's hope you're right and the manuscript changes, otherwise they'll have to go blind into this case and more people could die.

I thought that about the photos too. That they would end up with different victims, which is still a possibility of course.

👉🏼 “Assuming there’s only one blue hat in all of Woojung-ri . . . “ Love it! 🤣
For all Hae-joon’s lecturing to YY about the consequences of their actions, I was wondering when he would realize it applies to him too.

I knew the uncle would be important. It was such a red herring that it was her father. Now whether it is her uncle is something else. Honestly, I think whoever killed the teacher was a one time deal or even a two time deal and then Ko min Soo is a copycat. She and her brother are too unhinged to not be part of at least one of the murders, even if it is just her watching.
I am loving this show and our OTP's growing relationship. They are learning to trust each other and share. Hae Joon has been alone for so long, he doesn't realize he has a partner now. So it is nice they are coming together.

I usually avoid shows that seem like they'll be too scary or intense for me, but I'm (carefully) enjoying this. With this week's episodes, I'm invested in the mystery, and am enjoying the dynamic between the ML/FL, the FL's interactions with her teenage mom and dad, and the technicolor nostalgia of the soundtrack and sets.

So far when I have stepped out of my comfort zone the dramas have been worth that stretch and careful covering of the screen so I can still read subtitles or turning the sound down has helped. I was able to enjoy Healer and Chicago Typewriter using these approaches at times.

Yoon Young guessed Hae Joon was an criminal on tv before she thought of a reporter. LOL. How could she not recognize Anchor-nim~
I knew that their actions would cause changes so I was bracing myself for a different murder. A different victim.
Hae Joon looked so guilty about his misjudgment. I felt the gravity of his situation after he saved the kid. I appreciate that he has tried to be cool-headed and unbiased. He is juggling all kinds of intel while his moves can cause small or big effects. He is used to investigating alone and doesn't want Yoon Young affecting the case. He barely knows her (and vice versa), but I hope they can combine their knowledge and work together.
For now, I'm glad she did her own investigation instead of accepting his words. It's good that the writer has introduced another possible suspect instead of the original 3 too. More murkiness and mystery.
I'm also glad Hae Joon didn't take long to apologize to Yoon Young after his rant. He waited for her outside, late at night, and used the same phrases she had said when she waited for him, heh. Slowly, but surely, they'll communicate better.

All I have wanted was for them to put their heads together and TALK!!! We are there but I wish it had happened sooner! Truly not a fan of this ‘I am keeping things secret for now’ trope!
That being said it’s a ride and I am here for it! I am totally invested in the dad and super curious to find out why he turned out the way he did in future. Defo he knows about his brothers dark side and probably tried to shield him or something.

I am going to go out on a limb and say I'm placing my bet on Soon Ae's brother being the murderer. We know little of him, but still he is a minor character in the drama and is close enough with Soon Ae for the adult version to be shocked near the river.

I am enjoying the show better than I thought I would. I am invested in the mystery and keep making theories in my head. Mi-sook, Min-soo, Yoo-seob all fit the bill for now. I am not sure about Bum-ryeong yet. I find him a bit suspicious.
On a lighter note, I love the family drama. How shocked Yoon-young was when Soon-ae told her about growing feelings for Hee-seob. How Hee-seob scolded Bum-ryeong for stealing mainly because it would affect Soon-ae. Pleasegive this cute couple a happy ending.

I hope they're working together this time , for good. I don't exactly like the fact that Hae-joon preaches openness to Yoon-young but is as secretive as anything himself. At least Yoon-young isn't sitting idle.
The Koo siblings are high level dysfunctional and crazy. Who the hell does that?
The description of the murder in the manuscript is too personal so I'm guessing Mi-sook played a personal part here, and was at the scene of the murder to witness every single detail.
How did Hae-joon not think that his actions will create new victims? Especially when they're in almost everyone's lives.
I'm enjoying this though. I like how it's gradually unfolding and all.

I thought we were done with the secrets 😖 these 2 are frustrating me! Talk Chaebal! How are we supposed to solve anything with missing pieces of a puzzle? Everytime they stop mid thought, I have a desire to smack someone.
Story wise I contemplated whether they would just let the murders happen (at least the first one ) inorder to find the criminal. I mean wouldn't that be the most sure method ? Instead of chasing after the one blue hat in the village? But I guess murder is a no no, even if it did already happen. I'm holding on cause the setup is still intriguing, jin kijoo and anchor-nim. If I have to write another comment on communication next week....let's not go there

I like the mystery and the characters. I'm not frustrated by the fact the main characters didn't talk about everything. He came with a very precise agenda, she came by chance. He's trying to solve a murder, she's trying to make her mother happy. Like that, these things are not related. But now, they understood it was connected.
I'm scared for Hae-Joon, by dint of wanting to protect the victims, he will end up as a suspect... I hope the fact he helped saving the cop's kid, they will be able to communicate better.
Yoon-Young is hilarious with her parents, she reacts so much like her father that even Hae-Joon saw that there was something weird.
I'm curious in the opening, there are box of matches, guitars and butterflies.

I'm also among the ones who are frustrated about how long it took to our leads to openly (well, not wide open, surely) speak to one another. When they both discovered they were stuck in the past, it was a week before the murders, so they have been 7 days together, it's not that much. But after all what happened, the fact that they know the crimes are real, that they are somehow connected to them and between themselves, they now understand they need to work together. We needed it.
I also have the feeling HaeJoon will end up being suspect, or even framed for the crimes. The timeline as we know it has changed so, why not blaming this guy who comes out of nowhere?

Yup, he was the one sitting by the lake.
I want to suspect him too even though we don't have any evidence yet. It would be a big twist if he was the culprit. A prominent, likable figure in town with a terrifying, dark side.
Hae Joon was also the only male victim. Why did the killer kill again 34 years later? And why Hae Joon?

Do you think the killer may be a time traveler too? ~ who travel from the past to the future (is it possible?).

It's been quite a while since I had so much fun guessing along while watching a series.
When Bum-ryong showed up at the café, I wondered if the past had suddenly changed. Because the first thing he had to tell Hee-seob was the gossip about the new teacher who was wanted by the police. And the police showing up at the school was one of the changes, caused by Hae-joon. So Bum-ryong may not have originally been at the café at all, or the owner may have been telling the untruth, which makes her suspicious herself.
And when the fire trucks showed up, I was afraid that the bus the teacher was on had a fatal accident because fate just wouldn't let her leave town alive.

I finally caught up on these episodes and was reminded what I liked so much about this drama. The ML and FL are both likable with interesting back stories, the relationships are heartwarming, and the mystery is well done.
With so many viable suspects, the killer could plausibly be anyone of them. I don't think it's Hee-seob, but he definitely knows, or thinks he knows something, that sent his life on a downward spiral.
This drama is definitely checking all the boxes for me right now. Keeping my fingers crossed it stays that way!

I don't quite understand why there has not been any discussion of the murders from the point of motives. A trainee teacher comes from somewhere outside the town; almost immediately, she is murdered. And two of the three suspects are schoolboys. Now, why would mere schoolboys be suspected of murdering a teacher they would hardly know? What possible motive could they have?

These two eps are definitely the emotional turning point for our two leads, and I couldn't be happier to have that in the middle of all these murder attempts. I love that slow understanding Yoon-young has of her mother and father that finally filled in some of the gaps in her future self's knowledge and impression of her family. Also the slowly but surely evolving relationship between Yoon-young and Hae-joon as they chose to trust one another more deeply, knowing that they only have each other to rely on.
We also seemed to have reached that point that existed in every time travel story ever. Where your one (seemingly insignificant) choice to change the past finally created a reverberated changes big enough that it changed the history completely. Then you slowly realized that you couldn't rely on your amassed information from the future anymore because everything has changed considerably, and you don't have any way to access the changing knowledge.
No matter how many times I've seen this happening in time-travel story, I couldn't help relishing that moment when the two leads desperately wanted to hope that any possible change was infinitely better than pounding on an immovable wall yet they also couldn't be sure that they weren't somehow make things worse by meddling. They've realized it now that the very fact that they've came to the past to change things around "for the better" was apparently enough to give them a number of new variables to mull over.
What a headache-inducing endeavor. May they keep being strong, because I'm sure this is only the beginning of every nightmare.
