Doctor Cha: Episodes 7-8

It’s all about the affair this week as one person after another is drawn into the secret. What first seems like a series of reveals actually leads to a conspiratorial knot to bury the truth even deeper. As the kids get riled up over their cheating parents, our leading medical resident is kept in the dark. Luckily, she’s using the time to build her confidence at work and home — and possibly even in the love department.

EPISODES 7-8

You can tell we’ve reached midway when all the secrets start coming unwrapped. The major points this week circle around the responses of each of our characters as they come to learn about the affair between In-ho and Seung-hee — and about the existence of Eun-seo. The first to find out is Yi-rang, and it’s just a cascade from there.

First, a little backstory. Eun-seo has never had a relationship with her father, since In-ho was married to Jung-sook at the time she was conceived. Seung-hee raised Eun-seo in the U.S. for fifteen years and only brought her to Korea three years ago. Once they returned, In-ho and Seung-hee restarted their affair, but In-ho has never really gotten to know Eun-seo.

This bothers Seung-hee and she organizes a dinner for them all so In-ho can try to make conversation with his daughter. Eun-seo — angry at being abandoned while her father has a full life with his other kids — invites Yi-rang to the dinner. There, Yi-rang is surprised and confused to see In-ho, but Eun-seo spells out the truth quickly: “We’re half-sisters. Your dad is my dad.”

A couple of things happen from this scene. First, it lets Eun-seo get a jab in at both her parents. She’s upsetting In-ho’s life, sure, but she’s also making her mother feel inadequate for not upsetting his life sooner by revealing the truth herself.

The second outcome is that Yi-rang is hurt and furious. Up to this point, she’s been feeling some animosity toward her mom for going back to work. But in these episodes, we finally see Yi-rang get on Jung-sook’s side when In-ho refuses to let Yi-rang go to art school (she has to be a doctor!) and Jung-sook decides she’ll send Yi-rang to school herself.

Uhm Jung-hwa in Doctor Cha: Episodes 7-8

This is a nice turnaround for their relationship because it shows Yi-rang that her mother doesn’t have to be in the house in order to support her. Now that Jung-sook’s a working woman, she gets thrifty and takes out a credit loan to pay for Yi-rang’s school.

So, when Yi-rang finds out that In-ho has another kid — one who’s Yi-rang’s same age no less — her first instinct is to protect her mother. For better or worse, Yi-rang decides this means they should all hide the affair from Jung-sook.

Kim Byung-chul in Doctor Cha: Episodes 7-8

It does not mean they have to hide the affair from In-ho’s mother, though, who Yi-rang informs of the news by asking, “Halmeoni, why did you do such a poor job raising your son?” This leads to Ae-shim smacking In-ho around with a pillow and telling him how stupid he is. She may not have wanted him to give his liver to his wife, but she doesn’t want him stepping out on his wife either. So, we add another conspirator to the list of household liars.

Independently of all this madness, Jung-min finds out on his own about In-ho and Seung-hee when he sees them hugging in a hospital hallway. He asks his father directly if he’s having an affair and In-ho goes, “Did Yi-rang tell you?” *Smacks forehead* Jung-min is even more bothered to learn that his sister and grandmother already know about this and they all sit down for a meeting.

Kim Byung-chul in Doctor Cha: Episodes 7-8

Yi-rang breaks the news to Jung-min that they have a half-sister (and he vomits, which seems like the right response) and they all agree that Jung-sook should never find out about any of this. But, Jung-min wants In-ho to end one of the relationships: either divorce Jung-sook or break up with Seung-hee. Oddly, he proposes that In-ho should wait until Jung-sook’s residency is finished in three years and then decide, and In-ho agrees to this plan.

Since this is such a great deal for In-ho, he doesn’t want anyone to let the cat out of the bag early. That means he has to have a talk with Dr. Kim — who is the only other person that knows about the affair, but is not a part of the coverup. Last week, we ended with Dr. Kim saying to Jung-sook that he has something important to tell her. But that conversation never happens because it’s interrupted by Ae-shim.

Min Woo-hyuk in Doctor Cha: Episodes 7-8

Even though Dr. Kim seems conflicted about whether or not to tell Jung-sook the truth, it makes In-ho squirm just to know he knows (finally! The squirming!). So, In-ho tells Dr. Kim that he’ll make a choice and end one of the relationships (in three years), but Jung-sook doesn’t need to know about it in the interim.

From Dr. Kim’s perspective, he’s got In-ho on one side, telling him to keep quiet, and Seung-hee on the other, telling him to go ahead and tell Jung-sook. She’s been trying to nudge him since before Eun-seo spilled the beans to Yi-rang. Basically, Seung-hee doesn’t have the guts to do it herself (which is why Eun-seo’s truth-telling felt like a jab), but she also wants Jung-sook to find out somehow. I guess her plan is to snatch up In-ho when things fall apart.

Uhm Jung-hwa in Doctor Cha: Episodes 7-8

As it turns out, Dr. Kim doesn’t have to make a choice because Jung-sook discovers the wonderful world of social media and finds out on her own. She sees Seung-hee’s account, where she’s posted photos of all her trips, and realizes that In-ho had “conferences” and “seminars” in all the same places at the same time. She even figures out that when she was in the hospital with liver failure, In-ho was not at an important conference like he said, but was on vacation with Seung-hee.

Poor Jung-sook has all these realizations come crashing down on her and starts crying, shivering, and shaking — all while still at work, which is just the worst. Well, almost the worst — it’s also her birthday. She’s scheduled to have a fancy dinner at a nice hotel with her family, which they’ve organized because, now that they’re so disappointed with In-ho, they’re finally treating Jung-sook right.

We end with quite a cliffhanger this week, as Jung-sook, dressed to the nines, enters the restaurant looking like she’s got something to say. Behind her, Seung-hee is also approaching with a look of determination. In-ho spots Seung-hee and gets nervous, and there’s tension on all three sides.

Before we end, I’ve got to talk about the other big secret that Jung-sook learns this week, which is that Jung-min is dating So-ra. To tell the truth, So-ra and Jung-min are my favorites in this show, individually and together. I like how bossy she is and how much he likes her bossiness. But I dislike how traditional Jung-sook has been, not wanting her son to take orders at work from a woman.

So, when Jung-sook finds a man’s watch and boxer shorts strewn around So-ra’s apartment — and then realizes they belong to her son — I was in stitches. First, she feels faint thinking about having So-ra’s tough attitude in her house as a daughter-in-law. But then, she admits that her real problem is that So-ra is correct in thinking that times have changed and gender roles are not fixed.

Uhm Jung-hwa in Doctor Cha: Episodes 7-8

We did a lot of setting up this week to get us to what I imagine is going to be high fun next week. Most of the time we spent with our heroine in these episodes focused on all the little changes that she’s going through. She’s taking on more authority at home (paying for Yi-rang’s art school and telling In-ho she’ll take care it) and at work (standing up for herself when she’s right). She’s gaining confidence all around and this last straw with In-ho might be the push she needs to go full force.

I have a feeling all that confidence is going to culminate in more screen time for Dr. Kim as well. This week we saw her get the idea that he might like her (the hug helped!), but she still thinks she’s past the point of anyone being interested in her. I’m really looking forward to seeing her use this explosive information about her husband as an opportunity to take even more risks — adding her self-image to the list of areas she’s more confident in.

I LOVE THIS DRAMA SO MUCH. I also hate In-ho and Seung-hi. They are the worst. They deserve each other, and I hope they are miserable (whether together or apart, ideally together so no one else has to put up with them). On the plus side, Roy Kim just gets better and better. He's the only one who is worried about Jeong-suk and has zero self-interest in the decision to tell her. Even the kids were being ridiculous.

Each week, I am increasingly confident that she will not end up with In-ho (they are not giving him one redeeming quality) and will end up with Roy. The latter especially after that fortune telling and Jeong-suk's line wondering if she's ever known real love (which we know she hasn't, and that made me very sad).

Oh, one more thing: I love Jeong-suk but that "advice" to her patient was not something that's actually helpful for suicidal people.

Which is why she suggested to the So ra that he get a psych evaluation and was ignored. She was just trying to get him to not kill himself.

I know, but her advice could have backfired and made him feel worse (now he would feel guilty for being suicidal when there are people who are dying). Imo it would have been better to just wait for the psych referral.

I absolutely loved these two episodes! We are at half way mark and we have the reveal. I hope we see a new confident Dr.Cha who stops being a people pleaser and stands up for herself. I hope Her response to the other intern is just the beginning!

I was conflicted about the kids wanting to hide the secret from the mother but it was really sweet to see that they do care about their mother. I loved how protective both the kids got of their mother. I might not agree with their decision but it was nice to see their intent and genuine concern. Jung Min was very practical in asking his dad to make a choice even if that involved divorcing his mother.

In-Ho’s suffering was such joy to watch. I loved seeing him lose respect at home and that the kids are starting to give it back to him.

Dr.Cha finding out his son’s dating life was hilarious. I like that she has lived life a certain way but she is not narrow minded. Loved how she is able to imagine her daughter in law and actually see she is right. About time these two become friends and a team. I can see that they both can learn from each other.

Kim Byung-Chul is a riot. His facial expressions are priceless. The terrace scene and their run down was hilarious.
Also, Uhm Jung-Hwa looked hot in that last dress.

Can’t wait for next set of episodes!

Kim Byung-chul is totally selling everything for me with his facial expressions. It's flawless and transitions seamlessly from one to the other in a way just only him knows how to.
I don't like In-ho one bit, but I'm going to sit down and watch his character just to enjoy Kim Byung-chul's facial expressions.

I rewatch scenes just to see his face without having to read subtitles. Anyone else playing In Ho m, we would have been such a bland cheating scum of a husband. But In Ho suffers so well, his cowardice is so beautifully portrayed that makes this show so much more enjoyable.

I just cannot believe we discovered why In ho and his mother didn't want him to divorce Jeong sook. That is a big deal and the recapped didn't even touch on it. Jeong sook has the power and can go after the money now.

And I still don't like So-ra. At least not with Jung min. They are just not good for one another.

‘That is a big deal and the recapped didn't even touch on it.’ 👈🏾 this point was raised in the past and we were informed that the weecaps will purposely not include certain plot points so anyone reading weecaps to get an overview of the story can still watch the episode and have something new that will be of surprise/interest. That’s why they are weecaps rather than the extensive recaps from the past. Often, a read through the comments section will ensure the full picture is provided as juicy plot points will definitely get commented on in there.

Tbh, I thought his mother didn't want him to get a divorce because she appears to be dating someone active in a church (there's that scene of people singing hymns around her hospital bed and later we see her seemingly reading scripture about adultery in their living room). It would socially be a black mark against her—and the way she raised her son—if it was learned that he's an adulterer and thus getting a divorce.

"Your mom's a homewrecker. Your dad is an adulterer. You're a cheating couple's daughter"
A million applauses to I-rang for that clap back at Eun-soo. And a most honorable praise to the writer for that great dialogue. This is one of the best things that happened in episode 8.

I kinda liked Eun-soo at the beginning of the this week's episodes. She's basically the one giving her mom the wake-up call her mom seems to have forgotten. And I love how she unveiled everything at the dinner. But she wanting to damage I-rang's psyche is where I drew the line. That one is simply not it at all. But then, I-rang herself understood the assignment and beat her at her very own game. But, I did cheer when Seung-hui baked at In-ho to not yell at her daughter. This little moments of solidarity between them both, even though I do not exactly like them are things I love about Dr. Cha. Ever since Eun-soo's introduction, even though we know she is definitely not happy with her mother's choices and will always seize the occasion to let Seung-hui how her choices are hurting her, she's got her mom's back, and her mom got hers.

Capping out Dr. Jeon once again was really sweet. Dang! That lady is full of herself. Jeon might have 1000 successful surgeries under her best but I bet you, she'll possess zero bedside manners or even check up on her patients before or after the OR. For someone as skilled as she is but fails to listen to her patients nor accepts suggestions from other residents, she's in for a very long ride. I just hope her wake-up call won't be the death of a patient under her watch.

I don't know what Seung-hui was looking for at the hotel. I hope she gets what's she's looking for. But what I do want to know is Jeong-suk appearing for her birthday dressed in black.

I don’t like Eun-Soo’s approach but she is a victim as well. Her mother chose to rekindle her affair with a married man, exposed her daughter to her life as a mistress and lost respect in the process. Eun Soo is suffering the shame because her parents are awful.
She wants her mother to be acknowledged as a legal wife but she doesn’t realise it’s not that simple.
I was worried for I-Rang but she recovered well and handled this like a champ.

Drawing the line here doesn't mean I stop understanding her POV or she stops being a victim in my books. I basically cheered her as she called the shots. I get it that she wants to hurt I-rang's emotion,
that for sure will be hurt. She wanting to see I-rang crumble in shame is what I do not subscribe to. And that's where I'll step back to call out, and step back in to keep on cheering Eun-soo as she's taking the reins Seung-hee is hesitating to grab.

I haven't watched episode 8 yet but I came to say this drama is a breath of fresh air among the heavy dramas or the chaotic rom-coms. I found myself laughing genuinely for the first time in a while, binge-watching episodes 5-7. This drama is underrated and makes for a really good watch.

Am I the only one disappointed by the kids choosing to not tell Jung-sook about the affair? I get that they're protective of their mom, that they want her to be happy after such a major surgery, I get it. However, I can't help but think that they're basically infantilizing the poor woman and making her out to be some delicate flower who must be protected from the evils of the world, not the matriarch of their family unit (not counting grandma) and their father's lawful partner of over two decades. I think that 'betrayal' from her own children will hurt Jung-sook just as much as, if not more, than In-ho's infidelity. Everything she did, she did for her children; she stopped her budding career and became a stay-at-home mom for them. Now, they don't even trust her to handle difficult information. That would hurt, it would cut deep. I don't know. Maybe I'm projecting my own experiences onto a work of fiction and overthinking this and the kids were right after all, but I can't help but feel... conflicted about their decision. Oh well, all the power to our Dr. Cha. That's a revenge dress if I've ever seen one. Uhm Jung-hwa is freaking gorgeous.

Speaking of marriage, I did think that the show was careening towards an eventual Jung-sook/In-ho divorce and initially, this episode sealed the deal for me. In-ho has literally zero redeeming qualities and the show basically uses everything about him, down to his physical appearance and his buffoonish personality, as a punching bag (shoutout to Kim Byung-chul's incredible performance!). Meanwhile, Roy Kim couldn't be a more perfect human unless he turned out to be a secret demigod or some other supernatural being. I was sure, certain, convinced there was no saving that trainwreck... until I saw the episode 9 preview. Not to spoil anything, but I'm uhhhh not liking some of the scenes shown there. I hope desperately that its just a red herring, but we all know how much kdramas like their perfect family units and their conservative 'forgive-and-forget' approach to marriage. I'm scared.

Roy Kim has a birth secret which has not come to the forefront yet, but I am a little worried about who his parents were. The drama uses so many typical makjang elements in a lovely humorous way, but I do expect Roy Kim to have some connection with the main characters, I just cannot think who it could be, but it might exclude a romance with Dr. Cha (hopefully I am wrong there).

It would be weird if he is In-Ho’s brother too. Lol. She has to dump her husband and date his brother :)
He is too nice to be Seung-Hui’s family.
I really hope this arc doesn’t ruin the show for us.

I hope he’s completely unrelated to any of the major characters and instead turns out to have a connection with an old, dying patient or something. South Korea has a population of over 50 million, it’s possible if they want to. But, I’ve watched dramas and know just how impossible that is.

God, I’m terrified of the inevitable birth secret drama. It’s never been my favourite trope and it’s certainly not going to be mine now. Knowing this drama’s proclivity for somewhat clichéd storytelling, there’s no way they’ll pass up the chance to make the half-brother of either Jung-sook or In-ho. *Sigh*. Or maybe he’ll be Seung-hui’s long lost brother and we can stop worrying about this potentially stupid looming plot line. One can hope.

I really don't think this theory has any grounds. We haven't even had any hints that Jeong-suk has a long lost brother. I'm sure it would have come up during the organ donor scenes, and also been hinted at during the fortune telling. Also, as another Beanie pointed out, his surname at the orphanage was Kim, not Cha or Oh.

I get that people are traumatized by previous dramas, but man I wish this theory would go away.

I thought Jung-min's reaction was golden when In-ho tried to appeal to his son by saying he would understand the affair since Jung-min is an "adult man."

And I kinda get Jung-min's protectiveness since we know he's already worried about the stress of the residency program potentially being damaging to Dr. Cha's health, even without the upheaval of learning about the affair.

I just hope we don't see Dr. Cha going through organ rejection in a later episode and In-ho seizing the opportunity to show that he's changed for the better by becoming her donor and saving her that way.

On the other hand, if he absolutely has to have a redemption arc, I hope it's not by getting back with Dr. Cha, but rather that he learns to be a proper father to his kids because they certainly deserve better.

No, you aren't alone, and I think the drama itself agrees. Roy Kim is the one who points out that the decision not to tell her is actually self-serving, and he's the only one who doesn't have any potentially selfish motive.

I completely agree. I understand that they are concerned for her esp with her current health condition along with the fact that her residency isn't complete yet but choosing to keep it from her for 3 more years as though how long it already has been going on for wasn't long enough?
That would just destroy her even more.

I am not scared. It seems like In-ho interferes because of hurt pride and his commercial property (which - judging by the size and location is their main asset by far), which he and MIL would lose, if Jung-sook left for good. This is bound to generate lots of funny scenes, so I actually look forward to the next episodes.

What a pathetic and spineless worm In-ho is. How good that Dr Cha now knows about his affair and I look forward to In-ho grovelling - hopefully unsuccessfully.

I'm glad both children sided with their mother. In-ho must really be living in a parallel universe if he thinks his son would be understanding.

My personal highlights are all the scenes where Dr Roy meets In-ho and shows him quite clearly how despicable he finds him. I could watch a whole episode just with those scenes.

What a wonderful show this is turning out to be.

The kids decision to cover things up makes no sense at all to me, but everything else was perfect.

I have to say my absolutely favourite scene was on the roof - Roy Kim and In-ho hugging each other and suddenly realising what they were doing was pure gold. And the accompanying musical snipped (from Handel's Julius Caesar (where JC is romancing Cleopatra) made it even more hilarious (all of the classical music snippets seem to be little musical jokes as far as I can tell, such as typewriter frenzy to Rossini's William Tell Overture).

And that dress at the end was a killer!

I love this drama. I feel so invested in the story. Having said that, I feel like they were dragging out the cheating narrative a bit too much. IMO the time to end that marriage was a couple episodes ago. I would’ve preferred to have spent the time watching her move on and make a life for herself. Better late than never though, we can now look forward to the healing part.

Clearly Dr. Kim has feelings for her, which is hard to understand, since she has friend zoned him and has given no indication that she is interested.
I loved it when Dr. Kim saw right through Seung Hi when she tried to manipulate him into breaking up InHo’s marriage.
My heart broke for IRang. What ARin did to her was cruel. Or vicious, as InHo’s mom called her. IRang is innocent in all this. Why hurt her?
But I don’t understand why they all decide not to tell mom. I get that if there were no secrets there would be no story, but this one made no sense. The first thing a 17 year old me would’ve done was told mom. But I did LOVE how she handled it later with ARin.

It was so much fun to see InHo losing all respect once his secret came out. “No. I’m nothing like him” had me in splits.

As with his reaction when Jung Sook electrocuted herself, InHo’s reaction when she falls off the roof makes me think he has feelings for her.
One last thing. I love Uhm Jung Hwa, but can someone ask her to get a better hairstyle please?

Also, we never see how they are as a couple. Except one scene we almost have no idea about their relationship. He clearly likes her and he cares enough to worry about his mothers opinion of her.
In the initial episodes I found her as too harsh. I wish she would speak with assertion but not scare away her hoobaes from approaching her.
But overall she seems like a confident person who is good at her job. And she compliments when someone does a good job.
I do feel she and Cha will make good friends.

Especially when in-hi tells his son as a man he should understand and the son claps back that he doesn’t want to be anything like his father. I was upset that they kept it from her, but I can see why they would.
I also loved the trip to the fortune teller and Jung-sook finding out her rate fortune that more men will cling to her as she gets older! I hope our leading lady can move forward and kick some ass at work, and who know mabey start a fling with Dr. Kim

I love that the cat is finally out of the bag. Now, I am curious to see what actions Jung-Sook will take. I felt her hurt when she was going through Seung-hi social media, when she realizes the deception. I felt really bad for her. Also, I don't think Jung-Sook doesn't appreciate her son getting orders from a woman. I didn't read it like that at all. So-ra is what she is, but she is just very rude. Even though Jung-Mim might like that she is very assertive, I find her to be rude for no reason. It almost seems like bullying at times. And if I were Jung-Min's Mum, I also would be worried that my son would be dating someone like that. Even in relationships, being polite and caring with words are important. And although I like So-Ra, I mean her personality, she is very rude.

The highlight of episode 7 for me was Dr Roy Kim and In ho run to the top and to the bottom. Kim Byung Chul's facial expressions are the best, he is really able to back a pretty despicable character look like an absolute buffon.

I love in episode 8 how In ho family immediately turned on him when they found out about his affair especially the Mother in law ( I expected her to defend him so it was surprising she also turned on him ). His kids ( Jung Min in particular ) all the respect for their father evaporated immediately, shows they truly care about their mom and Cha Jeong Suk's efforts and sacrifices didn't go in vain.
