The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 7-8

Think you’ve guessed the secrets of our guesthouse and its Flower Scholar tenants? Guess again! New revelations throw everything we thought we knew in a different light as our characters start to connect their past and present. But what kind of future are each of them trying to build?

EPISODE 7-8

The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 7-8

San, dressed in Watchman black, faces off against Tae-hwa and his men while Dan-oh, Yoo-ha, and the others flee. Just as Tae-hwa disarms San and reaches to unmask him, a second Watchman appears out of nowhere. Not only does this new guy’s outfit sport important-looking red accents, but he’s a lot more skilled than San, quickly taking out all of Tae-hwa’s men (though not, Tae-hwa notices with interest, killing any of them — quite unlike the Watchman he knew).

Given the circumstances, Dan-oh decides they’d best relocate to another town entirely for a while and gets a job at a tavern to support herself and her little family. Hong-joo, however, tired of living as a ghost, makes plans of her own to secure a husband for Dan-oh and then become a female monk.

The husband hunt doesn’t go much of anywhere, but Hong-joo sticks to her determination to leave for a nearby temple, despite Shi-yeol’s best attempts to convince her otherwise. Now that her existence is (somewhat) known, the two can talk face-to-face, but he, unfortunately and seemingly unintentionally, keeps reminding her of her late fiancé, first by the song he sings to her and then by the flowers he picks.

I say seemingly unintentionally, because you never know with Shi-yeol — he appears to know everything and nothing at the same time. And now I’m not sure who he is or what he’s after at all (more on that later).

After Hong-joo moves into the temple, Shi-yeol visits her, feigning a sprained ankle as an excuse to stay longer. She’s still not swayed, so he gifts her an adorable rock terrarium representing Ihwawon and assures her they’ll all welcome her back with open arms if she ever changes her mind.

The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 7-8

In the meantime, the Flower Scholars make frequent trips to visit Dan-oh — except for San, who insists he isn’t worried about her. Once he finally does show up, Dan-oh confronts him about risking his life by battling Tae-hwa at the temple, even if it is part of his job description. But he’s quick to clarify: he didn’t do that as the Watchman — he did it for her.

Speaking of Tae-hwa, he hasn’t just been twiddling his thumbs since losing to the Watchmen (again). He has people follow the Flower Scholars to find Dan-oh, nab her, and bring her back for questioning. They choose the perfect timing, too, because Dan-oh has just received Lee Seol’s dragon-marked artifact from an anonymous source. It’s the other half to her compass, given to her by Lee Seol himself when they met as children, and only upon seeing it does she put two and two together: that boy was Lee Seol.

Tae-hwa throttles her until she confesses to hiding Lee Seol way back then, though she swears that’s the only time they’ve ever met. Before Tae-hwa can torture her further, Yoo-ha practically beats his door down and pays Dan-oh’s debt. Tae-hwa agrees to release Dan-oh and also return ownership of Ihwawon, but only because he’s certain she’ll unwittingly lead him to Lee Seol and the Watchman.

Meanwhile, the political climate is getting increasingly dire. Even as the king pushes to have his supposed son appointed crown prince, Minister Shin is uncovering the truth of the switched babies. He knows killing Lee Seol won’t solve any problems, and it sounds like he plans to put Lee Seol on the throne instead… but the person he outright offers said throne to is Yoo-ha. Every time they meet, they speak cryptically of Yoo-ha’s true identity, Minister Shin stressing that an act of treason is the only way to create a better, fairer world for all.

At first, Yoo-ha isn’t interested, but two things shake his resolve. The first is that Hwa-ryung tells him of her relationship with his birth father and gives him his father’s will. The second is watching his fellow revolutionary be executed for possessing their book of prophecy. Desperate for justice, he returns to Hwa-ryung, who tasks him with bringing them the crown prince’s special artifact. Which, interesting — do they think he’s Lee Seol (or is he?), or will they try to pass him off as such?

Since San isn’t present to welcome Dan-oh back to Ihwawon, she seeks him out in his bamboo forest hideout. Again, he asks if she really believes he’s the Watchman. And again, she asks if he can’t protect himself instead of always protecting everyone else. His final military exam is coming up soon, so he promises to tell her everything about himself once he passes.

When exam day arrives, the king ups the usual stakes to make things more entertaining. The contestants are divided into two teams to battle it out, never mind that they could easily end up injured. San is already injured, of course, but he powers through, and his dogged determination catches the king’s eye. When San comes out on top, the king grants him one wish, so San requests a position close by the king’s side.

While everyone is out taking their respective exams, Dan-oh finds San’s copy of the prophecy book. Her initial worry melts into delight when she discovers he’s doodled pictures of her inside… and then into shock as she recognizes the scene. He’s drawn them meeting by the doghouse as children.

As soon as San returns to Ihwawon, she confronts him, and he keeps his promise to bare all his secrets now that he’s passed the exam. He’s the boy she saved all those years ago. He’s Lee Seol.

The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 7-8

Just when I think I’ve got at least some of this show’s mysteries figured out, it throws us for another loop, opening up ten new questions in place of every one it claims to have answered. I can’t even be disappointed that Shi-yeol isn’t Lee Seol (or isn’t he???), because I’m just so darn impressed by having been fooled.

The thing is, San as Lee Seol simply makes sense, and has all along. Everything pointed to it, from his quest for nonviolent solutions to his instant connection with Dan-oh to his reaction when noblewoman-turned-gisaeng BAN-YA (Hwang Boreumbyeol) told him how her family were slaughtered in the upheaval.

And yet, Shi-yeol as Lee Seol made just as much sense last week. And that’s what makes it such a great misdirect — because so far the puzzle pieces have never truly contradicted each other; they just spell out different conclusions depending on how they’re arranged.

Of course, the question now is: can we trust this reveal? I don’t see a reason San would lie to Dan-oh about it at this point, but if there’s anything this show wants us to be certain of, it’s that we can’t be certain of anything.

Well, that and the king is evil and must be stopped before he kills literally everyone in his kingdom. But I think San is working on that one.

Nice writeup, and yes, lots and lots of questions to be answered!

So far the show is doing a great job on keeping the tension going, unravelling the plot while constantly teasing us about who is who (loving the changes in order of the male leads in the intro, though was expecting to stay with Jung Gunjoo for a few more eps before rotating to Ryeoun...and then back to Kang Hoon!

So personally I'm still in the Shi Yeol for King fanclub, but certainly looking much less likely at this stage (although..).

So apart from the real identities of the key players (I'll write on that in a separate post lest I get cut off for length!), I think there are a lot of questions about the presumed plan(s) to depose the current king and replace him with someone else.

(1) Is it all one integrated plot (with queen dowager perhaps pulling the strings?), or several competing plans (Left State Minister, Kang San, Shi Yeol).

Seems like gambling at the gibaeng house is a money and info laundering op by Kang San and Shi Yeol, but not Left State minister?

(2) What game is left state minister playing - is he really a good guy, or just pretending?

3) And possibly related, why did he offer the crown to Jeong Yu ha. Seemed to know about Kang San and made effort to attend round 1 of military exam but then wrote him off? Or is this (like the scholars subversive material) a diversionary tactic to fool king?

(4) Does his plan really just involve spreading lots of subversive material or is that just one strand of the plot (where are the hidden troops!)?

(5) Both Kang Sang and Shi Yeol seem to be committed to a non-violent coup. Kang Sang presumably hopes to be in a position to assassinate king himself now? Will Shi Yeol also end up topping the civil exam and request a place close to king??

(6) But what does the ship purchase (ep 5) have to do with the plan(s)? Joked that he would run away to Qing if necessary back in ep 5 but didn't seem to be a serious proposition. Or is this about bringing troops in rather than escape??

(2) I have the same question! I really want to know if the minister and gisaeng-nim are trying to use Yoo Ha or if they just want him to lead the rebellion because they know they share the same goal.
I'm also kinda confused because it seemed like they mistook him for someone else (Yi Seol?)? or maybe they just said that to manipulate him?

I think Left State Minister and the courtesan think (or know) that Yoo Ha is Grand Prince's son, so he would be Lee Seols's cousin 🤔
And they want Yoo Ha to take the throne.

And now for some who is who speculation!

1. How many princes are there lying around really - could we have three?

In an earlier episode, was mentioned that deposed CP had several sons who kept dying, so this might be wishful thinking as I'm in the Shi Yeol for King club, but I'm wondering if perhaps Yi Seol was not actually the oldest surviving prince, but older son was hidden...

And does seem to have a bit of a brother vibe with San, though San seems a bit resistant to this!

Also CPs brother the grand prince seems to have had at least one, who is presumably Yu ha, despite hints to the contrary (red herrings???). And if Yu ha is son of GP, is he legitimate, or son of the gisaeng? Much stronger claim to throne if the former!

2. Who is the watchman? Yu ha surely can't be since clearly doesn't know who the other two are, even if he was nominally available at the requisite time for the swordfight (assuming he has a superman like ability to do a quick change and find a sword!).

Options seem to be:

(1) none of the three, the guy San met at the other Inn, who he asked to investigate things for him

(2) bamboo hat guy who meets with Shi Yeol (maybe he's coordinator of a small group)?

(3) Shi Yeol - managed to get himself into Imwahon just after San arrived there, resourceful, seems a lot to him going on under the surface, suspicious medical knowledge. Could be doing a lot to throw everyone off the scent...

Does seem like Shi Yeol knew oldest girl's fiancee, who was apparently a member of 'six swords' group - was the administrators son really a watchman who ended up sacrificing himself???

The English subtitles always make me think that the courtesan was the Crowned Prince lover. I don't know if it is a translation mistake and she is talking about Grand Prince instead.
But it seems that Yoo Ha is his son and now he knows it (from the Last Wills she gives him to read).

Yes I think the later reference to an item from CP was an error.

The servant they were looking for in earlier episodes worked for GP not CP (GP would have lived outside palace, CP in) and servant doing laundry who she talked to mentioned close relationship with CP and GP, but said flirty woman worked for GP and left before he was killed/deposed or whatever happened.

And in Ep 6 evil chief eunuch has a drink with gisaeng innkeeper and says clearly she was Grand Prince's woman.

Ok, so it is practically clear that Yoo Ha is Grand Prince's son.
Why does the Left State Minister prefer him to take the throne instead of Lee Seol? I don't know.

More questions: when Shi Yeol was captured and tortured, Left State Minister helped him, didn't he? He must know something about him...

The more I think about previuos episodes events, the less I understand XD

Yes there is something odd about Left State Minister's selection since he went to military exam presumably to see Kang San (did Queen Dowager alert him?); was told 'person he was looking for' was Shi Yeol in arrow message which was enough to have him launch out and have him saved from administrators clutches; and yet now seems to favour a third contender...What's his real game!

1

I'm wrong - I've listened again to ep 8 a few times and Hwa Ryeong (the innkeeper of Buyeongak dies say 'sejajoaha' (Crown Prince) when talking about the will and Yu Ha's inheritance item.

But simalarly, in earlier episodes it was made clear she was Grand Prince's woman, not CP.

Still, if he is CP's son, why did he say never considered going for the throne and hesitating? Is he a younger son of CP, perhaps by a concubine?

Or if GP's son, did CP's will designate him as an heir in the event Ye Seol was to die??

Very complicated!

So we know Yoo Ha is related to the Royal Family but we don't know who are his parents yet.

1

Yes, yes! I was wondering if there are three princes! Becuase someone said something about the Grand Prince's eldest son, but I don't remember who. Maybe the Left State Minister? Then again, since it's a drama and we have to have as much angst as possible, could Shi Yeol be the original Watchman's son? All three flower boys seem too young to be THE Watchman, but I could be wrong as this drama keeps faking us out. I just think it would give maximum angst for Shi Yeol to be connected to the Watchman (if not him) because of his growing relationship with Dan-oh's sister, since her fiance was killed by the Watchman.

Shi Yeol talked about the most difficult day in his life... The day he heard that tune, which must be the same day that Dan Oh sister's fiancé died.
Now we have to know why it was a hard day for him (as Watchman or Watchman's son or whatever).

Yes I think there seem to have been two different significant dates in the past, both connected to palace and Ihwawon. The first I think is the night of the original rebellion, when CP was deposed and ?Yi Seol hid out in doghouse (and heroines father died). Second, some years later, was when Eunuch betrayed ?Yi Seol and son of Administrator Jang was killed by watchman on day of his wedding to oldest daughter of Ihwawon.

Does seem to hint at Shi Yeol being watchman (and actor actually is older than the others by about seven years, even though looks and acts younger!), but could equally have been one of the targets of events that day..

3 princes is my favorite speculation so far.

1. I'd be a unique twist we haven't seen before.
2. The twist makes senes. Royal family logic: Have multiple spares who don't know the others exist. Minister's logic: Have a hidden spare that you control.
3. It has the potential to give the most satisfying plot arc and ending. Here's my fanfic:

-- Yoo Ha, son of the grand prince (not the crown prince)
Insecure, jealous and arrogant as he is; once he has a taste of opportunity he covets the throne and tries to block the true heir. Eventually dies and we're happy to see him go.
Why: They haven't put any effort into making this character very likable. It makes sense that they're setting him up to be the villain. (Note: not saying I don't like the actor.)

-- Shi Yeol, hidden firstborn son that presumably died in infancy (maybe swapped with a fake-heir at birth to protect him?). Becomes king. The throne is secure and life in Joseon improves.
Why: His smart and opaquely slippery manner makes him perfect for the job.

--San, presumptive firstborn son that really isn't. Helps his hyung ascend to the throne, then lives happily ever after with Dan Oh in Ihwawon.
Why: He's not suited to the throne (too hot headed) and Dan Oh isn't suited to being a queen (no family backing; and would have to share her husband with a bunch of scheming, entitled noble women.)

I like the fanfic ideas and certainly think the three princes idea has something going for it!

I actually quite like Yoo Ha - seems likeable enough to me, noble ideals, and saving Ihwawon for our heroine! And I wouldnt actually be surprised if the twists and turns of the plot make her end up with him, and San ends up with the aristocrat turned gisaeng...

But its pretty clear he hasn't up until now at least thought of himself as a possible contender for the throne.

So presumably (thought he was) either a younger son or son of a concubine? They keep on hinting he is is Hwa Ryeon's son, which would explain her advocacy for him, but not why he got an inheritance from CP and something in will regarding him (givne she was GP's woman, not CPs). And I also think he will turn out to be legitimate so he can rub it in the face of the horrible adopted brother and his cronies!

As for the other two, I'm on tenderhooks to find out...

Saving her house aside…What bothers me about Yoo Ha is that he constantly crosses the line between protectiveness (ok) and possessiveness (not ok). He doesn’t seem to care whether she’s comfortable with the affection he constantly forces on her.

I'm still not convinced San is Yi Seol. Is it wishful thinking just because I want Shi Yeol to be the King? Maybe 😬. But right now I'll take a leap and guess that -
1. Shi Yeol is Yi Seol - that name cannot be a coincidence! Maybe he heard the song from the mouth of Hong-joo's fiancé the night he died.
2. Yoo-ha is an illegitimate son of the deposed Crown Prince - possibly the CP and Hwa-ryeong's child?
3. San is the son of a Watchman/Royal Guard who was dressed up as Yi Seol to distract pursuers (this is where the 'leap' in my guess comes in 😅).

@miso2019: I like your 3rd one but why would San identify himself as such if he wasn’t? He could have just said I’m the boy you met that night. If your 3rd theory is right, it means he doesn’t trust Danoh and while he is attracted to her and likes her, he is misdirecting her in light of her dealings with Taehwa.
I hope San doesn’t think he is the Jade Dust because of the trauma of that night.

@enriquequierecagar: Tabong and I were chatting about the many misdirects and one of my theories about Danoh which I mentioned is this:

“ I know I am probably barking up the wrong tree but I am thinking maybe she doesn’t know she is a/the watcher because there are others too. What if it was a responsibility which had been entrusted to her family as her dad may have died protecting the jade dust. Of course the little Danoh wouldn’t have known this but it might be symbolically be important”.

Little Danoh protected that frightened, traumatised and bloodied little boy and watched over him for that short period of time. This is the symbolism I was referring to.

I also think there is a reason Yook Ho is there otherwise he is just a rando. It might make a lot of sense to adopt a hapless persona if you are watcher. Hiding in plain sight!

Wrote half a dozen typos in my rush so here's a repost:

The end of ep 8 made me actually laugh out loud, albeit the ‘I’m going insane’ kind of crazed giggle 😂 The show runners really said ‘never let them know your next move’.

Feel like we all more or less said it’s got to be Kang San at some point in the beginning, did the show just manage to make us confuse ourselves for a good seven episodes or so??? Bravo, hats off, 👏 to the writers. They’ve pulled this off so well - if they’d revealed or just heavily hinted at San from the beginning, we would’ve all been like ‘I knew it, pfft what a lame mystery’ but they brought him in and out of the spotlight and I literally had my attention fixed on the other two completely for the last two weeks, so this reveal actually feels like a 🤯.

I was surprised I didn’t dislike the idea of San being Lee Seol though? Whilst I was interested in seeing Shi Yeol’s arc back to the throne (back when we all thought 🤡), they’ve fleshed out both him and Yoo-ha enough that I’m still very interested to see where they go. Plus right now we’ve gotten just 1 reveal but 293489 other mysteries to unravel because both the other scholars’ background is still a massive, bolded, question mark, not to mention trying to guess how everyone else is going to act - Head Eunuch claims he can’t be swayed by morals but is this a facade? Is the Left State Councillor actually trying to correct a wrong or is he setting up an elaborate trap?? Will San and Yoo-ha inadvertently find themselves on opposite sides in the end? What will Ban-ya do? What’s Administrator Jang’s end game, is it just to get revenge on the man who killed his son? Where will the traditional ep 12/13/14 source of angst come from this time?? Dan-oh knows now so it won’t be because of feelings of betrayal so my money is on noble idiocy from either Dan-oh or San

Colour me thoroughly impressed. I'm on the same page as you @mistyisles - I’ve never enjoyed being confused so much before! The only thing I’ve been able to predict is the main romance at this point 😂

@lapislazulii: Being misled by this show is so entertaining, right? i know this is very random but I like Shin Yeun as Tanoh as she is charming and has depth. Kang Hoon is so mischievous and slippery as Shiyeol. He just sparkles on screen and I am really fond of Jung Gunjoo. Ryeoun is the only one that is new to me. I’m not so sure of his acting skills as yet but he has presence for sure.

I agree wholeheartedly about your comments on the cast, even the antagonists are doing their job well so that they're not gratingly evil. Like Adminstrator Jang, I'm not on his side but his reasoning behind why he's being an antagonist is understandable and not over the top. Even the King - I wasn't sure at the beginning but the actor is pulling off the crazed psycho evil energy well.

Ryeoun is new to me too - I've only got vague recollections of him from 18 Again and Adult Trainee - and although sometimes he seems a tiny bit one note, I think that's just in line with how closed off his character is - I can see the marked difference now that San is opening up a little more.

But yeah 100% the three scholars have been cast well because I couldn't imagine them as anyone else but who they are now. And SYE is a delight, I really am enjoying how she's balancing all the hues of Dan-oh's characterisation!

I loved both Shin Ye Eun and Kang Hoon in Meow: the secret boy. I started SRGuesthouse because of them.

About Ryeoun, this is the first time I watch him. I like more his acting when he plays the most comic side of his character, when San is happy or bickering Dan Oh, than when he is serious, injured or concerned.

2

I agree that Kang Hoon is very charming and interesting in this role; he's doing well playing the ambiguity of the character while still making him likeable. This is also the first time I've seen Ryeoun and I think he's solid so far. Sometimes he overdoes it with the gruffness, but there are moments when he shows promise in conveying the character's inner thoughts through his eyes. And his horror over the prospect of Dan-oh marrying Yoo-ha was very funny.

"Will San and Yoo-ha inadvertently find themselves on opposite sides in the end?"

I think this is my biggest fear.

Si Yeol and San seem to be on the same page. That's one of the reasons why it feels like one is Seol and the other the watchman.
With Yoo Ha is different. Sometimes it feels like he's filming another show all on his own.

We know he wants a better Joseon, but we really don't know what motivated him to be part of Mokin.

They showed us his family on day just to tell us that he's actually adopted the next, but we don't really know much about his birth parents (or even about his adoptive parents). I'm guessing his adoptive dad is the one that introduced him to Mokin? But why?
I'm really curious about his background. Our boy seems to know nothing but at the same time he's getting into some deep stuff. If he doesn't know/understand the context properly, he could end up on the wrong side. Especially if he has some weak motivations.

Right?! I agree about your assessment at the end there about how he's going in DEEP - a coup is no joke - without really knowing the full picture seemingly. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited by the prospect though, it's reminding me a bit of the predicament the two MLs in My Country were in, bffs but on opposite sides of the battle in the end.

I also wonder (but don't think it'll happen because there's not enough episodes to pull it off I think) - it would be kind of cool to see Yoo-ha become a 'means to an end' kind of antagonist/anti-hero, in that he decides to go along with the coup for the throne because he wants to put an end to tyranny but finds himself changing/making some questionable decisions along the way because he think's it's for the common good. I think there's potential purely because we've seen he's got this like - for a lack of a better term - dark edge to him sometimes?? He doesn't give off pure morally righteous flower boy scholar vibes all the time, especially when he's got his thinking face on or is confronting San, he's got this like shadow that flits through his expressions.

Maybe that's just the jealousy coming through though idk, but I like the way JGJ has been playing him because it's got dimensions.

"it would be kind of cool to see Yoo-ha become a 'means to an end' kind of antagonist/anti-hero"

But that's exactly what I think it's going to happen. And it's exactly what I don't want to happen. 😆 In my head I had this picture of the three boys leading the kingdom together.

Last week I had everything planned: Si Yeol was the king, San the main royal guard (I don't remember the official name for that position) and Yoo Ha a minister (with the other members of Mokin).

3

(I can't seem to reply directly to your last comment so here's the work around) It seems we've inadvertently found ourselves on opposite sides then @enriquequierecagar ;) I do like your idea of how the three boys would lead the kingdom though, I guess I'm just itching for a fight hence why I'm mentally egging Yoo-ha to toe the line as an anti-hero of sorts 😆

Also "last week I had everything planned" - hahaha I LOVE this, gosh darn it the writers just had to go and throw a spanner into the works!

When the compass + dragon came back in the story, I knew San will be Lee Seol, Kdramas love too much their childhood connection.

But it was kinda disapointing. San is the one I can't imagine to be King. He doesn't seem to think in advance, he just acts and thinks after. So the watchman came to save him and not Dan-Oh at the temple. I like his fights, I wonder who he's and if we already met him.

So why Shi-Yeol wanted to run away on a boat...

Thanks for the recaps!!

About the drawings that San painted in his book (the 3 Joseon propheties) I think it would have been a major surprise if he hadn't listened all the story from Dan Oh's mouth before. She told him what happened that night and then he drew it. Why is she so surprised?

At this point I think San really is the Prince. That's what I thought since the beginning because the young Prince we saw in Episode 2 (when the Watchman saved him and killed the other poor boy) looked alike San.
But then the show made us think that the Prince was Shi Yeol: the old man called him Your Majesty if I remember well and the name was similar to Lee Seol, and he wanted to leave the country on boat so... it made sense!

I also think Yoo Ha is from the Royal family, and he has just known it.

So many misteries yet. This drama is like a game and I'm enjoying it a lot.

If your boyfriend, the one that the king wants to see disappear, gives you as a gift a limited edition compass that literally has the name of your aboji in law in it, when that stuff can get you killed... Maybe you should break up with him. 😂

I'm a hardcore Dan-San shipper but wth was that man. "Yes, let's give her the dragon everyone knows belongs to my dad, let's make her a traitor too, that's romantic". C'mon man.

Now being serious, I liked the obvious-but-not-so-obvious reveal.
Just by watching the news, posters or EP1 you know who's the main character of a show. Since day 1 we knew San was the ML but somehow we fell for all the mixed signals the writer gave us. It was so much fun! I remember that last week I was pretty sure San was the watchman, so I was shocked a sageuk was focused on a simple watchman and not the crown prince. LOL

EP8 was pretty obvious tho. San, The Jealous, did nothing after Dan Oh explicitly said another boy was cute? That's impossible. We all knew San was Yi Seol after that scene LOL.

However, the real mystery here is regarding the watchman. Si Yeol is the watchman, right? But why? how? And why is he flirting with the Dan Oh's sister after killing her fiance. How does he think this is going to end for both of them? For real.

Yoo Ha... This poor guy doesn't have idea wth is going on, does he? I feel bad for the Mokin members that died, and I'm scared because YH is getting involved in something he shouldn't.

So we have to assume that it was San who left the compass cap in the door for Dan Oh.
But why? He was going to confess his identity soon. He didn't have to put her in danger. San is making some mistakes...

She found the compass the day he went to visit her. I think that was the first clue they gave us that episode. The other two boys were in the capital.

IKR? Why give her that freaking dragon? *face palm* I was like "give that to your worst enemy, not her". 😆

I wonder if it was him trying to comfort her, like he supposedly did as a child OR is it some morally grey machination set up by the Councillor or the Eunuch or something to throw Administrator Jang off? I don't know if I'm giving too much credit to the writers or reading into things that aren't actually there, but considering how tight the writing has been so far that compass thing seemed a bit out of place so I'm going into full tin foil hat conspiracy theorist here - Jang is a pretty strategic baddie but just like how he's using Dan-oh to find Lee Seol, I wonder if the Councillor is using Jang/pulling the strings without Jang knowing to find Lee Seol too??

I think he is.
I even started thinking that the Minister/Councillor maybe wanted to use Yoo Ha as a temporary Yi Seol to protect the real one.

I really like your theory.

Mistyisles, thanks for the recap.

The story keeps you guessing .
Dan-o’s family has some sort of noble lineage , enough to marry a prince ? Would she become a princess or a queen ? Don’t think she’d want to be a concubine.
I think she’d be happier running a boarding house.
Looking forward to next episode.

She's yanban (an aristrocrat) so in theory that's good enough. And sounds like her father was a prominent Confucian scholar so reasonable credentials.

Key issue would be her behaviour (were it not for the fact that for her to become a princess/queen, will need to be a coup, so anything is possible!) given that she has been living as if she were a commoner.

Clue is really her sister, who is still trying to act like a proper yangban woman, not talking to or showing face to men; living in separate area etc.

I continue to enjoy this show.

Once again, I'm not sure how seriously I should take the newest revelation (and the order of the actors in the opening sequence), but I love that the show keeps me guessing. I absolutely believe that San believes he's telling Dan-oh the truth, so the other possibility here is that he's not aware of some key piece of info that would throw everything on its head. But if San truly is Lee Seol, then who is the Watchman--one of the other two Flower Scholars or someone else?

I did really enjoy the way Dan-oh figured out that San might be Lee Seol. We had seen San watching and drawing the little figure of Dan-oh on the book, but although I thought it was a cute way for him to show the audience his growing feelings for her--and I liked that it initially served that purpose for her as well--I appreciated the way the audience and Dan-oh discovered the deeper meaning together when she flipped to the page showing the two of them with the dog house.

I was puzzled why he left the other half of the compass for her, though, unless he wanted her to guess before he could tell her.

I also like the friendship developing between Hong-joo and Shi-yeol, although it did seem a little questionable when he started singing that song (maybe it's a coincidence that it was a song her former fiancee also sang, and maybe not). The flowers were a generic enough gesture that I could accept that was a coincidence, but Shi-yeol, for all his seeming simplicity and open nature, is the hardest for me to read. I do think his feelings for her are genuine, though.

I still think the cute drawings he painted would have had more impact in her and us if she had not told him the story before.

Agreed. That definitely would have been more powerful.

It was a lost chance by the writer to even surprise us more.

Yes very true - I lowkey thought when she confronted him about the drawings, he'd say 'I don't know what you're on about, you literally told me the story before??' or something but then he straight up said 'okay you got me, I'm Lee Seol' and I was like 🤯.

Not going to lie though, I'm still waiting for the other shoe to potentially drop at the start of the next episode. With how the writers have been throwing us off, I wouldn't be surprised if San says 'I'm Lee Seol...is that what you want me to say???' next ep and we're back to playing who's who 😂

Was it a lost chance or deliberate? I can't help wondering if the show is toying with us again on this one...

I think there are reasons enough to think that it was a lost chance (if San really is Yi Seol). The impact would have been bigger.

But also there are reasons enough to think that they are toying with us again :D

It's fun reading everyone's theories and what ifs here! I am quite enjoying this drama and like the mysteries of who is really who. If I could, I would totally buy a hanbok of Dan ohs. I love the colors! The 3 scholars are totally rocking their roles. And, this is totally bizarre, but when I first saw Royeoun, he reminded me of Michael Jackson with his round eyes and nose shape but in a good way. Bizarre is my brain sometimes!

I have made up my mind. I won't trust anything until the final episode no the final minute. That is the safe way ahead. I head the three boys belong to the royal family. One is Seol and the others are distant relatives.

Also, can't we remove the bloodthirsty king and his evil consort away? But I have to say they are a match made in heaven, both sly and conniving and I hope their greed brings their downfall and it for sure will.

I'm loving the fact that none of this is straightforward, and I'm constantly guessing at outcomes. My favourite is that all three are prince's, and related, and that they will need to reveal themselves to each other in order to band together and defeat the evil king. Not sure who will end up on the throne though.

I am arriving to this series in July 2024 as a relative newbie in Kdramaland. Woweee! What a wonderful rollercoaster this has been so far! I've enjoyed reading all the weecaps and the comments thus far and could not help but come on at the end of Ep 8 to say Oh Emm Gee!! He is Lee Seol!!?? OhEmGee!! After all my speculations going back and forth just like many of you here.

And now that I know a Watchman is always only a minute away from the person they are protecting, day or night, it makes sense one of his scholar bros IS a Watchman. I've loved the FL's different interactions with all 3 male leads, especially the bickering with San in the first few episodes.

BTW, I'm watching Cdrama A Journey to Love at the same time and the incorrigible comedic Kim Shi Yeol here reminds me of the comic genius Yu Shi San there. Are there any other fun and funny characters like Kim Shi Yeol in Kdramaland?

I hope the rest of this series is just as intriguing. Fingers crossed for a decent ending for all the good people in this story.
