The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 5-6

As secrets start to come to light, our characters are faced with some tough choices that will affect not only them, but also the people they’ve come to care about. Which secrets are most important to guard, and will they have to sacrifice in order to keep themselves — and each other — safe?

EPISODE 5-6

Just as Tae-hwa is about to discover San and Dan-oh hiding in the palanquin, an arrow whizzes past his hand, effectively diverting his attention. Dan-oh gets San safely back to Ihwawon, but he’s in bad shape — the arrow that hit him was poisoned. With no time to fetch a physician, Shi-yeol takes charge, surprising everyone with his expert knowledge of treating such wounds.

Meanwhile, Tae-hwa applies enough pressure to the former Head Eunuch that he lets Dan-oh’s name slip. When Tae-hwa summons Dan-oh, she feigns ignorance. But she only has five days left to save Ihwawon, and the thought that San might be a cold-hearted murderer of countless people (per Tae-hwa’s description of the Watchman) shakes her to the core. Not to mention, Tae-hwa extends his bargain: he’ll still forgive her debt if she brings him the Watchman instead of Lee Seol.

The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 5-6

All this puts San and Dan-oh in a rather uncomfortable position. She wrestles with his past and whether to turn him in, while he tries to push her away for her own safety. But they’re both secretly grateful that her treating his wound gives them an excuse to spend time in very close proximity.

Meanwhile, we finally get to see into the annex, where Dan-oh’s sister Hong-joo lives. Heartbreakingly, it seems she and Tae-hwa’s son were actually in love, and she’s ready to reveal herself to Tae-hwa if it means Dan-oh will stop endangering herself for Hong-joo’s sake.

The poor girl is essentially a prisoner, even if it’s done out of love, but one small breath of fresh air has now entered her life: Shi-yeol, who’s already figured out the basics of her situation. He stops by the annex occasionally, promising not to reveal her secret, and Hong-joo is clearly touched.

Speaking of Shi-yeol, however, he’s got decisions of his own to make and people to protect. Following San’s brush with death — and having overheard people talking about the newborn crown prince — Shi-yeol decides it’s time to make himself scarce and books passage on a boat out of Joseon. The problem, of course, is that Tae-hwa has grown newly suspicious of him and orders a raid on the local gambling den as an excuse to bring Shi-yeol in for questioning (read: torture).

Dan-oh, mistakenly thinking the scholar in Tae-hwa’s custody is San, peeks over the wall and realizes the truth: Shi-yeol is Lee Seol, and Tae-hwa’s using him as bait to catch the Watchman. It’s not an easy decision, but Dan-oh chooses to put San’s safety first and attempts to keep him busy around Ihwawon. But San hears about Lee Seol’s plight anyway and runs to help him.

The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 5-6

His arm is too injured to properly draw his bow, so Dan-oh offers to help. Has she ever shot an arrow before? Nope! But with San guiding her aim, she manages well enough. Together, they draw off Tae-hwa’s guards, and additional help arrives in the form of Minister Shin, who has sufficient authority to move the interrogation onto government property instead of Tae-hwa’s private yard. There, Shi-yeol’s supposed father testifies that his identity is real, and Shi-yeol is released.

It’s no accident that Minister Shin helps Shi-yeol, either. There’s only so much he can do openly, what with the king out to kill anyone who could possibly be accused of harboring sympathy for Lee Seol, but Minister Shin is quietly funding that secret society Yoo-ha is part of.

The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 5-6

Anyway, while fleeing from Tae-hwa’s men, Dan-oh and San take refuge in an old shrine in the woods. When San again asks if Dan-oh isn’t afraid of him, she admits she is afraid — of losing him. They spend the night sleeping on each other’s shoulders, and return to Ihwawon the next day, where Yoo-ha is worried sick about Dan-oh’s absence and Dan-oh has to navigate her newfound knowledge that Shi-yeol is royalty. (Eventually, she caves and admits she knows he’s Lee Seol, and he swears it’s not true. She doesn’t buy it.)

Yoo-ha, the only one out of the loop, has occupied himself preparing to confess his feelings to Dan-oh. But the death of his adoptive mother puts his confession on the back burner.

Since Dan-oh can’t bring herself to sacrifice San, she chooses to give up Ihwawon instead, relocating with Hong-joo and their faithful maid to a temple overnight. But Tae-hwa is hot on their heels, having concluded that Dan-oh knows who Lee Seol is.

Dan-oh locks Hong-joo inside so she won’t be tempted to reveal herself and marches out to face Tae-hwa. Although Yoo-ha has joined Dan-oh by this time, he’s not much help against Tae-hwa’s men. But just as Tae-hwa raises his sword to Dan-oh’s neck, demanding to know Lee Seol’s identity, San appears in full Watchman garb and leaps between them, reaching back to give Dan-oh’s hand a brief, reassuring touch.

This show continues to move faster than I expect, and in ways that make me really excited about what’s in store later on. I expected the “Who is Lee Seol?” mystery to be the central question throughout most of its duration, but already most of our main characters have at least guessed if not found out definitively.

The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 5-6

And sure, Shi-yeol continues to deny it, and there’s a good chance that trinket Yoo-ha’s father left for him is Lee Seol’s identifying artifact. But even so, all the signs point straight at Shi-yeol. And I’m glad, because the more I see of him, the more I love him and want to see him take his rightful throne.

In fact, much as I enjoy Dan-oh and San’s romance (that handhold at the end of Episode 6!) and want to learn more about San’s backstory, it’s Shi-yeol who has completely stolen the show for me. We only have the barest hints so far, but I’m already wholly invested in his and Hong-joo’s potential relationship — even though I know it’s in for heartbreak, considering the role he played in the death of her first love.

As for Ihwawon, I’m sure we haven’t actually said goodbye to it for good just yet. It makes sense to me that when push came to shove Dan-oh would give up the inn to protect her people — because people were the reason she was protecting the inn in the first place — but I have a feeling she and her friends will find a way to get it back before too long.

Is it just me or is the pacing and writing of this show just CHEFS kiss. I feel like I know everything but also know nothing lol. None of the characters are ready to put all of their cards on the table so it really does feel like it’s building up to be an intense game of poker.

The way the central mystery has been written though especially is masterclass (if they pull the landing off well) because it keeps evolving without staying one note - the audience is told/clued into things at the right time, but the air of mysteriousness is steadily increasing. Plus the pace is moving along just right so that the plot doesn’t feel like it’s dragging or worse filling up with loopholes/inconsistencies. This was the perfect week to have Dan-oh catch up to what the audience know/are assuming anyways about who Lee Seol and Kang San are - she’s too smart to not notice anything for another 10 episodes (unlike another show involving a disguised fiancée and a clueless fiancé 👀😪). Same could be said for Administrator Jang, he’s a pretty smart bad dude the way he’s piecing things together - I didn’t expect him to drag in Shi Yeol for an interrogation this early on.

BUT IS IT JUST ME OR IS THERE A TWIST COMING ABOUT YOO-HA??? Because of the fact that the head courtesan lady, who I assume is his mum maybe, is linked to the Grand Prince and also the tooth thing that Yoo-ha was left in his inheritance - is that what Administrator Jang was talking about when they were trying to find the ‘thing’ that would prove Lee Seol’s identity?? I’m trying to make sense of it but if somehow HE is the real Lee Seol, then who tf is Shi Yeol, because the watchman (assumed watchman) called Shi Yeol your highness right?? Either way, this is a good mystery done right because even though they’ve “told us” supposedly who Lee Seol is, it doesn’t feel exactly like an ‘ah ok the mystery is solved’ vibe, it’s more of a ‘I’m second guessing everything right now, wait is that what they want me to do??’ vibe.

Shi Yeol is fast taking centre stage for me though because I’m so invested in seeing how his arc develops - whoever he may be - but I’m not without love for our other leads and their blooming love (I’m torn between the two but leaning towards team San because that exchange in the little hideaway hut was so cuteee). Also I’ve got to hand it to the writers - that ep 5 scene was one of the most creative, heart-racing and plot sensible way to have the classic ‘boy teaches girl how to shoot an arrow’ scene 👏

The King is a tad on the cardboard cut out villain side but he did scare me this week, plus it’s nice change to have a presumably Good Dowager Queen & ‘I’m not actually sure if you’re bad or good’ Left State Councillor and Head Eunuch. I also just realised the evil Administrator dude is the same actor who played the evil guy in Crash Landing on You and in Youth of May - all three characters are also kind of similar now that I think about it.

@lapislazulii: I completely agree with you. This has become one of my faves really quickly. While there are a number of things that stretch credulity, like Danoh being asked to find Yi Seol in exchange for keeping the inn as it makes little sense that she would have any expertise in tracking someone as elusive as him. And, San is not much of a watchman given he was unaware that Shi Yeol was arrested and the torture only stopped because of the arrival that ‘noblemen’ posse.

I have an outlier of a theory. What is Shi Yeol is the watchman? He could be watching over San and Yooha because one of them might be Yi Seol. I thought that a watchman doesn’t necessarily have to have military training but be clever and resourceful enough to deflect attention from the real Yi Seol.

Yes that's true, the inn thing was a bit sudden - even just the debt coming out of nowhere seemingly - and San is clearly on his L's as a watchman since he's not yet realised who he's supposed to be protecting. I's not without it's stretches but enjoyable like you said!

I like your theory a lot actually about Shi Yeol being the watchman. It would explain the medicinal knowledge he seems to have too? Because that part doesn't really fit in with the 'lost prince' backstory, unless they try to imply that he's gained that knowledge because he's had to fend for himself while on the run (but from what we understand, Lee Seol would've had the watchman looking out for him as well as his "dad" right). It also would explain his uncanny ability to stealth and show up out of nowhere and why he showed up to the guesthouse/ran into Dan-oh the day that Kang San arrived. We also haven't seen him fighting yet at all which could be a plot to disguise his identity if he was the watchman- we've seen San fight and Yoo-ha get shoved when he was squaring up to Jang's men at the end of episode 6, but they're keeping Shi Yeol off the radar at the moment when it comes to action scenes, unless I'm forgetting a scene.

The fact that there's a number of factors to support multiple theories as to who is who makes this very exciting to watch hey! I only hope the writing won't sag and let us down in the middle/end!!

And, I forgot to say that he appears to be a tough nut as he was tortured/branded but didn’t lose his composure. As you reminded me, he is well-versed in treating serious-looking wounds in the fictional Joseon - wounds that very likely could have been infected easily, lead to septicemia and death in RL in that era.

And, I love your reference to ‘San’ being on his L’s! I hope the meaning is widely known but in case it isn’t, means being a newbie/beginner.

Thanks for your care in the community approach 🥰 because I am an Ajumma I am not always up to date so I often miss these references.

Oooh Australian slang, I love it. 😍

If Shi Yeol is the Watchman, I hope he is not the same watchman who killed Bong-joo's fiancé because: 1/ the age. That would be a plot hole. 2/ that would be dramatic if he falls in love with Bong-joo.

Yes I likewise agree with you - what OBY could have been!

I also particularly love the hints of uncertainty about who each of the three really are. The repeated does she know who San really is comments does seem to suggest he could be the Yi Seol rather than watchman, and I like the fission of uncertainty.

And I agree that Shi Yeo's medical expertise is odd (though not necessarily what one would expect of a watchman either it seems to me).

All the same, I do think Shi Yeol really is Yi Seol - the explanation provided that he had actually been crowned king, albeit then deposed explains the insistence of his old servant on calling him his majesty, he acquired the artifacts that presumably prove his identity from him, has a plan b in case everything goes west (viz boat to Qing) on current rebellion plan (being funded by Left Counsellor) and was princely in withstanding torture.

Also network of people pulling together to get him out of trouble - his old servant, who can bring in Left State Counsellor plus fake Dad to vouch for him, plus alert San - seems pretty strong evidence.

My theory is that Yoo Ha is actually Grand Prince's legit son and that is what inheritance showed, hence Yi Seol's cousin, who, in absence of Yi Seol would have next claim on throne potentially, if fake prince is exposed...question is whether he knows who Yi Seol is and is supporting him, or running his own agenda...

Romances on the side are developing nicely as well, though if she is technically a widow, can't see how it can end well.

I can't agree more with the pacing point. I also thought we will be treading for more than half of the show about who is Seol but it is almost out in the open now.

We have also other interesting plot lines, the love story between San and Dan-oh, and the potential romance we might get between Hong-joo and Shi-yeol, which is more complicated and interesting than having a love triangle or square.

There is also the matter of the keepsake Yoo-ha's father left him and his tie to the head courtesan. I just need the king and the consort scenes pushed to the background. They are both infuriating.

Thanks for the recaps!

I agree: Shi Yeol is stealing the show for me too. At this moment he is the most charismatic among the main characters and the one who seems to be hiding more surprises. And I am looking forward to knowing how the relationship with Dan Oh's sister evolves.

The show is playing with us, even by changing the order of appearance of the four characters in the intro. Now it seems they want us to believe that Yoo Ha is "jade dust". And he could be, for sure.

This drama is binge-watching material. When one episode ends, I'm looking forward to watching the next one.
There is no place for boredom for now and I hope it keeps this way.

I’m glad you said something about the changing order of cast credits! I noticed it too but then wondered if I was mistaken.
Did anyone pick up on Shi-Yeol calling San by the name of a legendary archer/ruler while treating his wound? I thought that could be interpreted either way. And then what about when San thanked Dan-oh for saving him. Didn’t he say again?
I’m still leaning in favor of Shi-Yeol being the prince, but these comments throw me off, as I think they are meant to do.

Shi Yeol talked as if San was the descendant of a famous archer/king from the kingdom of Goguryeo or something like that?

I don't know if he is sure about this or if it was a joke 🤔

I would like this drama to be about Shi-Yeol getting on the throne. I don't really care about the inn and Dan-O. She's not so good with secrets. She should have given up on the inn sooner. It's not like her sister could live like this her whole life. They needed to leave the capital far from Tae-hwa.

If San is a watchman, it was really reckless to act like this at the end of the episode. He put Dan-O and his Prince in danger by putting the focus on them.

It seems some of us are about to start a Shi Yeol Fan Club around here :)

I agree that San seems to be a "rookie watchman" because sometimes he lowers his guard.

Just popping in to say that after feeling a bit let down by the first two episodes, I am loving this show. The pacing is great, the relationships between the three men and Dan-oh all feel authentic and interesting, and I also appreciate that those three men have arcs and identities outside of her. At the same time, romance permeates the story at several levels, which for me as a viewer is a treat. As for the central mystery, I'm not entirely sure we can trust that we know who is who yet, although I do like the idea of San actually being a watchman and NOT the prince. But he and Dan-oh work well together regardless of his actual identity.

This show had no business being as tightly-written and well-paced as it currently is, but I'm loving it! I really, really, really hope they don't let me down moving forward because this has fast become one of my favourites currently-airing. Just a few weeks ago, I could never have imagined being so gripped about the central mysteries of the plot and was only here for the pretty flower boys and look at me now. I'm legit theory-crafting and reading through the ones others have made and it feels great. I love it when an unexpected gem comes out of nowhere and exceeds all expectations. IMO, some of the more "serious" sageuks out there should be taking notes. It's so great how I came out of the first two episodes thinking that the characterization of the main leads seemed weak and trope-y, and now I'm heavily invested in nearly every character. This is brilliant.

Something to add: I finally get why Kang Hoon signed up for this right on the heels of the juggernaut that was Red Sleeve Cuff. Not that there's anything wrong with switching to lighter fare after breaking out with a heavy dramatic role, but I did find it a bit disappointing at first that he'd relegate himself to a second lead role in what seemed like a one-note reverse-harem youth sageuk. Knowing what we know now, his choice makes more sense.

Loving the drama zipping along this week. I'm surprised (and happy) with the pace. Also loving the fact, like others, that so much is being surfaced but I still feel there's lots to find out. I also love that the writer is putting doubt in my mind with the tiger tooth showing up, who does it really belong to? Keep it coming!

Thank you for recapping! I am really enjoying this show! I love the pacing and as others have said, I feel like secrets are being revealed and yet not revealed. San seems to be the watchman for Dan-oh. And I think Shi-yeol must be the prince or why would he want to leave? But why was the triangle with Yooha?

I am deep thoughts of who is the real Lee Seol. So many things to consider. One Kang thinks she left the inn because of him. But then Kim Yi Seol was called Majesty by the old man and was saved with the note. And then Yu Han receiving something from his mother... ugh who is its really! Could it be that Kang is the prince, Yi Seol pretending to be the kind but actually the watchman and Yu Han the Crown Prince son with the gisaeng? Could it be that the watchman is the one that Kang San was talking at the gambling place? or the watchman is the old man that called Yi Seol his majesty? I do not believe it will be Yu Han. Yu Han could be the crown prince son from the gisaeng which is unknown. All of the scholars are adopted and/or son from a mistress or concubine... ahh I can't wait for the next episodes.
