News bites: January 21, 2023

  • Cha Eun-woo (Island) may potentially be joining Jo Woo-jin (Narco-Saints) and Ha Yoon-kyung (Extraordinary Attorney Woo) in a new crime drama called Bulk. With each character representing the police, prosecution, and vigilante justice, the story will follow our trio as they team up to tackle the underbelly of Gangnam. With filmmaker Park Nu-ri (Money) attached to direct, the production is planning to start filming later this year. [JTBC (1), (2)]

  • Lee Min-ki (My Liberation Notes) is reviewing an offer to star in a new series called Crash. Still in the planning stages, the investigative drama will be taking a dive into traffic crimes. In the meantime, Lee has been keeping busy with JTBC’s Hip (a.k.a. Behind Your Touch) (working title) as well as Wavve’s Look at Me on his roster this year. [Star News]

  • The cute continues in the latest poster for tvN’s The Heavenly Idol as Kim Min-kyu (Business Proposal) prays for success while Go Bo-kyul (Hi Bye, Mama!) crowns our fish-out-of-water as her prince. The fantasy rom-com premieres next month on February 15, just on the tails of Saint Valentine. [My Daily]
  • We also have a new poster for Netflix’s Love to Hate You, which stars Kim Ok-bin (Dark Hole), Yoo Teo (Dr. Brain), Kim Ji-hoon (Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area), and Go Won-hee (Revolutionary Sisters). Also launching in the month of love with a bright pink poster to match, the rom-com will be coming to our screens on February 10. [News1]

  • Kim Yoo-jung (Lovers of the Red Sky) and Song Kang (Forecasting Love and Weather) are in talks for My Demon, which seems to be checking all the genre boxes, including action, thriller, fantasy, and rom-com. Filming for the drama is set to begin once casting has been finalized, with writer Choi Ah-il (Mr. Queen) penning the scripts. [JTBC]
  • Oh My Girl’s Hyun Seung-hee (Loss:Time:Life) has been added to the cast of KBS’s Oasis, playing Seol In-ah’s (Business Proposal) close friend. Also starring Jang Dong-yoon (Search) and Choo Young-woo (Once Upon a Small Town), the period romance is currently slated to broadcast in March. [YTN]
  • New posters have dropped for SBS’s Taxi Driver 2, brushing the dust off our trusty taxi #5283 and tuning it up again for our heroes Lee Je-hoon (Move to Heaven), Kim Eui-sung (Under the Queen’s Umbrella), and Pyo Ye-jin (Taxi Driver). The new second season starts February 17 in the Friday-Saturday slot. [My Daily]

My Demon's scriptwriter was amazing with Mr. Queen, but both ML and FL had me tilted my head 😅.

Ready to get out from drama slump with Love to Hate You series, cross-finger it will be another great pure rom-com drama 🤞🤞🤞

1. Police, prosecution, and vigilante? They’re really trying to hit the whole crime genre trifecta. I do like seeing Ha Yoon-kyung become a leading lady though.

2. That would be, what, three projects in one year? As much as I would love to see Lee Min-ki throughout the year, wouldn’t that make an actor burn out? Starring in three different projects as a main character in one year is a lot.

3. I adore this poster and every aesthetic choice it is going for. Screw Valentine’s Day, this is my event for the month of February.

4. ALL HAIL LONG HAIR KIM JI-HOON!!!!!!
Anyways, this drama has been highly anticipated by me for over a year now. Kim Ok-bin and Yoo Teo are both so pigeonholed as serious dramatic actors in my eye, them playing against type (in terms of genre and character archetype) has me extremely excited.

5. Thank the drama gods for Kim Yoo-jung finally getting an age-appropriate male lead. Said male lead being Song Kang, however, is certainly… interesting. She will be acting circles around him.

6. I completely forgot there was an 1980s-set melodrama starring Jang Dong-yoon and Seol In-ah coming out. Hopefully this won’t be as heartbreaking as Youth of May? *remembers the time period*
*prepares the tissues*

7. I would probably be more into this if I had any motivation to finally finish the first season, but I don’t. It’s a shame Esom isn’t returning.

Actually Kim You-jung already had an age-appropriate male lead in Lovers of the Red Sky. Ahn Hyo-seop was born in 1995, he is a year younger than Song Kang. Though I agree, she will out act him.

She’s not exactly a great actress herself. There are more superior actresses in her age range and Song Kang himself has acted with much better actresses than her. He’s also more popular and better loved by the public both domestic and international so him being the top billed makes more sense. He’s been hand picked for Sweet Home so clearly he’s capable of acting circles around her too.

I’m sorry, but Song Kang is definitely not more well-known amongst the Korean public than ‘Nation’s Little Sister’ and ‘Sageuk Fairy’ Kim Yoo-jung. She has been an acclaimed performer before Song Kang even entered the industry.

As for the issue of billing, we don’t know yet since the drama is still in the casting stage, but intuition + past billing examples tell me Kim Yoo-jung will get the top stop (i.e. Lovers of the Red Sky, her above Ahn Hyo-seop; 20th Century Girl, her above Byun Woo-seok).

The Nation Little Sister title is in the past and has been held by at least 10 other people same for Sageuk Fairy which is literally every single person who has ever done a Sageuk. Park Min Young and Ki So Hyun also had Goddess of Sageuk titles doesn’t make them more popular than him. Currently the public only cares about Song Kang and his female lead is irrelevant. He was too billed ahead of Park Min Young and Han So Hee in his last 2 dramas too because he’s more popular and he’s too billed for Sweet Home ahead of all the veteran cast.

The ‘Nation’s Little Sister’ title is a highly prestigious one held by only a select few people out of thousands of public figures. It doesn’t matter when it was conferred upon a person, it’s one that you basically carry with you for life unless you do something that merits no longer having a good reputation. Sageuk Fairy is decidedly not a title given to “literally every single person who has ever done a sageuk.” If you were going to use examples, don’t go with the only people who are known to have the same levels of critical and commercial popularity as Kim Yoo-jung during the height of her child acting days. This is highly disingenuous.

Considering how the vast majority of his dramas had extremely low ratings, I’m not sure you should be this confident about Song Kang’s popularity with the Korean public. Kim Yoo-jung’s dramas, for the most part, have performed considerably better (although weren’t necessarily smash hits, I’ll acknowledge that).

Speaking of awards, I don’t know what list you’re checking, but Kim Yoo-jung has absolutely been nominated for Baeksang Awards, as well as many other well-known awards circles. Just because you didn’t know about her long-standing veteran status in the industry doesn’t mean it’s not true. It’s not ‘wishful thinking by her fans’, just watch any interview of her with her same-aged peers or even actors older than her.

There is someone doing wishful fan thinking here and it’s not me.

2

And how is she more acclaimed than him when she hasn’t won a single Beat Actress award from any prestigious award show except for the channel based awards which everyone knows is just an attendance award and is meaningless. No Baeksang or Grimae or Broadcasting Award nomination let alone wins so who decided she was acclaimed? That’s just wishful thinking by fans. Her acting is bland and repetitive she’s not that much better than Song Kang when it comes to acting.

Ahh, I had completely forgotten about her and Ahn Hyo-seop (probably on purpose to save my sanity lol). Thanks for correcting me!

1 - good for CEW to further expand his drama choices. And he's playing vigilante in this one (I checked). Ha! Gangnam's criminal dark side doesn't sound all that alluring, but with this cast I may try.

3 - they're really going neck-to-neck with Kkokdu for the funniest promo of the season crown, huh? Good thing we don't have to choose and can simply watch both.

4 - you'd think that Netflix can afford a better poster...

5 - girl, aren't you tired of demonically possessed bland dudes? Because I certainly am on your behalf. Run and never look back! No comments on writer, because I have a personal bloody vendetta with both from that duo. Less with this particular one (ruining 1 drama I cared for vs 3), but still.

6 - somehow I missed that it's gonna be on KBS. Agree with everyone else that it probably ends up being a tearjerker, but I'm ok with that, as long as it's a controversy-free tearjerker.

Thanks, as usual @tccolb for your witty summaries. I'm looking forward to what you amusingly call a dive into traffic crimes--speeding, rolling stops, tail light out, etc. Great concept--there's nothing more dramatically engrossing than fender benders!

I'm scared that Demon ends like Lovers of the Red Sky, KYJ being a better actress but sidelined for the ML... Song Kang will have to leave for army being born in 1994, so I'm surprised he's still taking a project.

1. Ha Yoon-kyung = vigilante justice. Now that's juicy.
5. Song Kang🙄🙄🙄. I hope he doesn't bring that smarmy look and ruin this one, again.
Mr. Queen's writer🥺🥺🥺🥺

Really happy for Taxi Driver 2.
