The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 5-6

Things get heated this week, as feelings deepen on all sides of our love triangle. But are our Joseon baddies even worth their salt if they don’t take advantage of said feelings in their plans to ruin the king?

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 5-6

“Off with his head!” is what I’d have ordered if I were a king and some lowly inspector — or anyone at all — rudely whisked my woman away right in front of my face. The nerve! Maybe that’s why Heon chooses to settle last week’s score with Shin-won through a duel, and So-rang has to stop him before he actually goes off with Shin-won’s head. I find Shin-won’s resolute insistence to not send So-rang to the king part admirable, albeit dangerous, and part annoying because without telling Heon why he’s not onboard the HeonRang ship, he’s just making the king out to be a fool. And that’s not very best-friendly of him.

But the drama was unnecessary, because Heon assumed it was business as usual with So-rang, and he had zero idea about his attendants’ grand plans to have him spend the night with her. Would he have actually slept with So-rang, though? Maybe, if he had imagined her to be the crown princess. But for now, Heon remains miffed that she seemingly took Shin-won’s side during the duel, and that’s So-rang’s biggest concern in all of this: Why is the king jealous? Where does his true affections lie? With his late wife? Or with her?

Heon eventually buries the hatchet by requesting that Shin-won stay by So-rang’s side to protect her after hearing about the assassination attempt on So-rang’s life. Although he all but orders Shin-won not to harbor feelings for her. So-rang also shares the same sentiments as she tells Shin-won not to cross the line with her. But then Shin-won goes on to tell her not to fall in love with the king, and I wonder if this trio even realizes that despite all the orders and requests back and forth, the heart will always want what it wants.

This is why even though So-rang is frustrated enough to want to tell Heon the truth about not being possessed by the crown princess, she sucks it in. She even capitalizes on the “possession” to tell the king to forget about her (as the crown princess), not minding that Heon is in agony at the very thought of forgetting about his late wife as her death anniversary approaches.

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 5-6

But the crown princess refuses to be forgotten so easily, and her ghost appears in sight of everyone — from the citizens, to her father, and even to Heon himself. This is all part of Minister Jo’s carefully crafted plans, of course, and the ghost in question is actually a doppelgänger of the late crown princess who was snatched away by Minister Jo’s kidnapping ring, and prepped for the job by Lady Seo.

It’s a win-win situation for them because if the plan pushes through, Minister Jo gets to permanently destroy the king (for reasons beyond me), and Lady Seo gets to bring in her daughter as queen under the guise of driving away the evil spirit with a new queen. But before Heon can finally drive himself crazy due to the sightings of the crown princess, So-rang and Shin-won come up with evidence to prove that the lady everyone saw is an imposter.

The Fantastic Four (consisting of So-rang, Shin-won, the king’s eunuch and Court Lady Won), call for a search of all the court ladies in the palace in a bid to find the imposter. But they walk right into Minister Jo’s trap because the only imposter among the court ladies is So-rang who is using the Sun-ah identity! It’s a semi-smart plan, I’ll give Minister Jo that, but then Heon personally fishes out the imposter from where she hid among the soldiers, and throws a wrench in Minister Jo’s plans. For now.

Heon goes to stop So-rang’s interrogation, and when he’s told that So-rang isn’t her real name either, he’s all, “So?” Okay, that was delicious! It’s almost as swoon-worthy as when he took off his kingly robe to cover So-rang, and his “thank you for staying alive” hug. Knowing that the crown princess is his Achilles heel, Heon decides to forget about her, and he bans So-rang from taking in her spirit — requesting her to officially stay by his side as his court maid, rather than as a medium for the crown princess. Awww.

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 5-6

But it’s not over yet because Minister Jo salvages his plans by murdering and hanging the imposter, and So-rang is horrified to learn that a total of seven ladies have died under similar circumstances — one every year, from the crown princess to the imposter. The only difference is that this time, the hanging took place in So-rang’s quarters rather than the crown princess’s quarters, and this is a clear warning that So-rang is next.

Actually, without Heon’s intervention, So-rang should have been the one to die. But regardless of how scary that knowledge is, So-rang chooses to remain by the king’s side. Shin-won’s wrist grab can’t even get her to change her mind, and while I understand his pain, at this point he needs to take a step back and just breathe. Or maybe not, because Minister Jo is not quite done with them.

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 5-6

The next victim of the kidnapping ring ends up being Hwa-young, but this is in a bid to grab the real target: So-rang. It ends up being a good thing that Shin-won bought So-rang shoes last week because that’s how he spots that she has been captured too, and he goes after the kidnappers. He’s joined by Heon who leads the palace troops like the head of some elite CIA extraction mission, and is anyone still in doubt that the woman Heon loves is So-rang and no longer the crown princess? Lol.

We’re already midway into the drama, and I like that there’s still the general fun feel to the story despite things heating up. I refuse to believe that Minister Jo established the kidnapping ring just for this scheme against the king. But then it’s thanks to the marriage ban that the citizens seem to assume that the recent kidnappings are arranged by the victims so they can secretly get married, Bossam-style. But we know that’s not true, so where are the ladies being trafficked to?

Anyway, now that the king is aware about the existence of the kidnapping ring, he can put a stop to it and return the victims home. Although, the best way to end the madness is to call off the marriage ban itself — and that can only happen when he decides to get married. Really, there’s no dearth of ladies to choose from as we’ve got dozens of queen hopefuls at Lady Seo’s Training Academy for Queens. And this is actually funny because whether in fictional Joseon or modern day Seoul, mothers are crazy about enrolling their children in premium academies.

But it doesn’t matter, because the endgame for the position of queen has already been determined. And no, it’s not Hyun-hee like Lady Seo or the dowager think: it’s So-rang. And with the earlier hint to Heon that So-rang has a whole different identity, it’s only a matter of time before she is outed as noble lady Hyeon-seon, and the queenly robes are tailored for her. My sympathies in advance to Shin-won who thinks he’ll return to the royal tailor with So-rang as his bride. And to the rest of the lovely beanies, it’s Merry Christmas from me to you!

I thought Ep. 5 was pretty mad dramatic but fun!

The king quoting FT Island's Lovesick, while insisting the Crown Princess loved him, made me laugh out loud. The delivery was so on-point. I love how this show does modern shout-outs.

And while I don't agree with So-rang paying off the handmaidens to lie about the Crown Princess's love, it was hilarious having it described as 'business' but in Hangul/Hanja 😂. Also the "They rip you up like a squid! Will you be okay never eating squid again?!" 🤣.

Sadly Ep. 6 was too much of torture, murder and mayhem. Hopefully we get back to the funny next week. We only have 6 more episodes to go after all!

Forbidden Marriage Ep 5
Alrighty I thought I could stay neutral but nope my SLS is getting worse and worse and I think I’m definitely on team Shin-won.
Just image if he were the male lead, all those intimate moments he had with So-rang would be seen in a more romantic light than it already is! Oh boy my heart can’t handle it!

While I might’ve shipped couples that didn’t end up together this year, I didn’t have such intense SLS in long time. I’m dying here, Shin-won recused her first from the water, he teaches her how to fight, *sigh* they ride a horse together (multiples time I might add). Yes yes I know it’s bad but he deliberately commits treason to get So-rang away from the King. They hug, they pretend they are married. How is he not the male lead! He has more romantic moments with So-rang than the King does!

I think Team SLS has a fighting chance here. For one thing, So-rang has repeatedly said she wants a wandering lifestyle, she’d clearly feel stifled and cooped-up in the palace and especially with the ceremonial requirements and restrictions of being a queen or official consort - and she’d be in danger all the time. It would be awesome if So-rang helps the king get over his grief and then some nice noble girl catches his eye. If ever there were a time to break the rules, it’s in this drama.

Yes, I know, I’m dreaming.

Hey there’s nothing wrong with dreaming!
And yanno while rare there has been cases where the second lead became the main lead in dramaland, tho I can’t remember any at the moment

Last week, I was sure that she was going wind up with the second lead, but now I do not think so. Unfortunately it's a period Korean drama and there cannot be a polycule. We've already had a great period drama in which the second lead took over being king so the other two legs of the triangle could get out of the palace. (I also wanted a polycule or menage in that one, too.) I mean, OK, at least two dramas in which the FL is arguably two people at the same time should count in my "why not both" idea, but I think it doesn't.

‘the FL is arguably two people at the same time should count in my "why not both" idea, but I think it doesn't’
😂😂😂

Omo omo is the second drama you are referring to Alchemy of Souls? Because I definitely agree with you! The fact that in part one Mu-deok had two souls Naksu & Bu-yeon and then also the bromance between Jang Uk and Prince Won. Prince Won also crushing on Mu-deok and Yul pining after Naksu yeeppp

Polyamory all the way, monogamy is outdated 😉

But I agree I don’t think dramaland will ever go there lol
Only polygyny *sigh*
I’m currently watching Under The Queen’s Umbrella and daaaamn how many concubines does this king need…

Yes, in Alchemy of Souls, Mu-deok is at least two people, maybe three. I think Bu-Yeon still has both souls. Also, Jang Uk has two daddies. The world-building there, in addition to making it possible to have two different and delightful FL actors, does create some interesting situations.

I'm rewatching The King's Affection and the second lead there has no prayer with the FL, but he has such warm and tender feelings for both the FL and the ML that I wish he could be their third person.

In this Forbidden Marriage drama, people seem to have forgotten that the king can have children with a concubine, who has a weird status that's not quite wife but not random lady off the street either. Instead we have all these weird rules about the court ladies being the King's in some fashion, which I have no way to evaluate.

Aside with the awkward, heavyhanded stand-off/love triangle at the beginning, episode 5 was still quite with the english-turn-joseon terms, innuendoes, Sorang being the fun rascal that she is, and Shin-won getting swept along for the ride. Love Sorang's logic that if he told on her, she would be arrested for treason, be ripped apart to death, just like dried squid, and he would never be able to bear eating dried squid ever again, which would just mess up his life. These two need to be cast as a OTP in another drama.

Episode 6 was a drag with the drama putting Sorang in mortal danger. I just feel so bad for her. She didn't survive the slash and a fall down the Cliff of Non-doom to deal with this crap. We need more Sorang front and center! Why can't one of the guys get kidnapped and then have Sorang help track him down? I really like the scenes when the three leads get to play sleuth.

I feel really bad for Shin-won. I hope he gives up on Sorang soon and finds a new love. I'm not sure if it's the shortened length, but I don't feel like Sorang can like the king enough to stay by his side and risk getting killed even though she professes she does.

Agreed re Sorang and Shin Won as OTP in another drama. I'm just not seeing why or feeling her romance with the king. Pity, perhaps, but nothing else. King's character (and his character's character!) seem rather flat, not a lot there.

I love this drama and the characters when they become the A team solving crimes to save the innocent. I love that they actually used smoke and mirrors for the deception. I don’t love that we always have to have death and politics in these sageuk dramas. Surely there are the equivalent of Jane Austen style love amongst the nobles or Dickens style life and times of the lower classes stories that can be told. They are always in the sidelines even though something like 100 days my prince or Poong brought them out more. I just don't want the mystery/thriller element being added into a rom com/slice of life modern or historical.

Thanks @unit for the weecap. Minister Jo and the kidnapping had been completely forgotten by me due to his general nastiness, I try to avoid his scenes. I meant to say last time that it helped, knowing the evil step mum was a courtesan and schemer, to explain how she was able to marry and now sleep with Minister Jo as these are two crusty looking men when she is quite a catch.

For me, the scenes with Minister Jo are the best. Yang Dong Geun is such a good actor and I keep thinking of how much the younger actors must be learning from him. Unlike so many sageuk minister villains he is subtle and holds his cards close to his chest rather than eye-popping and signaling his reactions and motives like a child. I’m enjoying the change after the bad minister in Queens Umbrella 🙄

Well, from what we know, murder WAS part of daily life in the royal palace. Half of the palace was trying to get rid of the other half, either with poison or otherwise. So it is "business as usual" for them.

I know that jealousy amongst multiple wives or Ministers is to be expected but it’s just constant and takes too long to weed them out and punish them.

I loved the first fight scene in Ep 5 with the King and Shin Won (shoutout to the music director for awesome background music during the slow-motion/flashback parts, I think I teared up for Shin Won lol). I also loved the King worrying if the princess loved him or not, So Rang and Shin Won investigating the ghost princess, and the King and Shin Won's dramatic slow motion walk at the end of ep 6.

It was painful to see Shin Won get rejected like 10 times over the span of two episodes, but I didn't like how wrist-grabby he got.

Also, the Defense Minister is clearly against the King and straight up evil so how has he not been investigated yet??

Episode 5 was so funny especially with the trip outside the palace to meet the crown princess's servants. The scene with How can you refrain yourself from eating the savory squid? plus the adorably cute orabeoni cracked me up. Park Ju-hyun is really nailing her role and I never imagined I would like So-rang's personality as much as I do know. As much as I am annoyed she isn't telling Shin-won the truth, I know that she can't be blamed for that as her life would be endangered, once her identity is revealed.
Also, it looks like the drama will give me heartbreak because I am officially on team Shin-won now

It's hard to root for the King when he still has strong feelings for the Crown Princess. The SML doesn't help at all. He has a nice relationship with So-Rang and a past too...

She has expressly said that she never saw him as a man but only as a friend. And indeed, her behaviour with him was clearly exactly that.
So I think this is enough.
And the king has been noticeably shifting in those two episodes, to the point of feeling guilty because he doesn't think of his dead wife as often as he used to.

You think so? I think she was completely honest. I never got any flirty vibe from her. She was always comfortable with him, "chummy". Not the awkwardness that comes when you like someone. One can clearly see the difference in her behaviour with the king lately.

Episode 5 was my favourite so far. I laughed hard when So-Rang told the King that it wasn't love but loyalty and how he was brooding. But thinking that the person you loved so much only thought of you that little can be upsetting. Even though, it was a lie.

Looking forward to Fridays and Saturdays.

Thanks @unit for the holiday wishes and fun recap. Actually your recap acted to brighten up these two episodes. We all know even a silly/fun sageuk has to have a scheming minister or two and I'm glad its being kept to a minimum. My favorite scenes feature the sleuth team. Fighting SLS in a big way - so much so that I hoped the real Crown Princess was faking her death and willing to return to her heartbroken king. Oh well.

I too had a case of SLS, but after the last two episodes, not so much.
I know I’m in the minority, but I like how the threat to So-rang has caused Heon to shed his mourning robes and start acting like a king again. When he took off his king’s robe to cover her, it was pure swoon. And when he arrived on the scene with his bow and arrow! Yowza! I was sold. 💘

Still enjoying the show despite the darker turn of events in Episode 6, but I hope this doesn't spell the end of So-rang's queen-of-chaos energy and creativity. I would love to see her use those skills to bring down the scheming ministers and evil stepmother.

I didn't vibe with Si Won this week.
1. One of the reasons why I don't like SL is because they are always telling the FL what to do, they always act like they have the right to make decisions for the girl and they act as if they can just do wtv they want because they have the "power of love" or something.

Well, that's exactly what Si Won did this week.
He really thought that So Ram was going to tell him "oh, cool, I'm going with you. Tbh, I secretly love you, thanks for freeing me from the king"?
He really thinks he has the right to tell her to come or go? to stay or leave? to do this or that?
He's so pushy even when he knows she likes the king.
I don't like that, at all. Everything he says it's supposed to be "for her well-being", but they're just a bunch of decisions based on his own feelings and desires. He doesn't really care about her feelings or needs. He just wants her for him. *roll eyes*

2. I know this show is anything but a real sageuk, but WOW, HOW IS THIS DUDE STILL ALIVE? everything he did the first 20min of episode 5 was treason or something similar. LOL

The fact that this dude is the only guard the king's servants can trust, is dangerous. He would let the king die with no problem LOL, he literally tried to kill him for a girl like two secs ago. And to think that they were "besties" yikes. Poor king.
I mean, the fact that Si Won had the chose to fight his bestie/king "for a girl", instead of actually talking to him, let him know his feelings, ask for a favor, beg, or any other alternative, he was like "I'm just gonna take the girl out of nowhere and when the king asks me wtf is going on I'll just go with the flow and fight him with my sword".

The funny scenes between So Ram and Si Won are cute and all, but that's it. I just see them as cute friends, they could even go for sibilings vibe.

3. The king kinda gave me Red Sleeve vibes with the whole "all court ladies are women of the king". I guess I have a trauma because of that show. LOL
I just want the king to be honest about his feelings and I want him to be soft. I don't like when he tries to be possesive or tries to solve all his problems with the freaking sword.

LOL, I guess the only character I actually liked this week was So Ram. She still rocks. I love her so much.

O/T sort of. When Shin-won and Heon were lurking in the background eavesdropping on So-rang’s interrogation of the former court ladies Kim Woo-seok (Shin Won) gave a smile that reminded me of a Kim Min-jae smile.
A number of beanies think there is a resemblance between Kim Min-jae and Yeo Jin-goo. Now I am going to add to the mix Kim Woo-seok.
We could have a three brothers drama. RL ages are KWS (28) hyung,
KMJ (26) and YJG (25).
I can’t remember experiencing SLS like this since maybe A POEM A DAY (2018) when (imo) co-ML Jang Dong-yoon (Min-ho) was relegated to SL and out of luck in the matter of love.
