Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (December 24, 2022)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

Curtain Call: This drama is finally doing the things I wanted and expected it to do, but it’s jamming them into the final four episodes in a way that doesn’t make sense. What a sad misuse of dramatic tension. But, on the bright side, I’m really liking Jae-heon all of a sudden. Now that all the innocent and hyper energy of his Moon-sung persona is gone, I actually like our defeated and deflated hero quite a lot more. We might not have dug into his backstory too much, but they are getting across the fact that his experience with his “great play” has left him a changed man. And those are the kind of things we need to see and feel, so that the drama can land (please) its ending.

Trolley: So much tension! I really didn’t want to watch another tense and suspenseful drama after just finishing Revenge of Others, but the two take very different approaches to suspense. Except Jung Soo-bin and her attitude and excellent bangs are in both. Anyway, I am impressed by Kim Hyun-joo and Park Hee-soon here — fantastic, understated performances so far, with so much emotion and subtext present even in the slightest of expressions and the smallest of scenes. I think the underlying tension of the premeire week will only increase as we go, and I’m hoping we will see this couple stick to each other no matter what starts falling apart around them.

Currently covering: Trolley

Alchemy of Souls 2: AHHHHHHH! I’m loving Part 2! I had my reservations about the switch in the leading actress, but she’s doing such a good job! I’m eager for her to regain her memories, though, so Wook can stop feeling sad — and guilty for his budding feelings for Bu-yeon. I’m fan-girling hard for this drama, and watching it live and having to wait a week between episodes this time around is almost torture.

Alchemy - my kids have been counting down the days till Xmas... and l have been counting down the days till new episodes of Alchemy 😁 Yes, I'm enjoying myself... and the My wife can't sleep part made me squee 😊

I'm also glad that we see more of Naksu's instincts kicking off, like the quick dive under the water to avoid gas poisoning, and more of Mudoki's tactical moves, like the witness of their marriage announcement. 😂 It also seems that Naksu is using her beauty and bright smile as a weapon 😄

Wook has reached his breakpoint and the final kiss looked more like longing for warmth... and company ...and comfort. 💔

It Might Be A Little Spicy Today - every week I'm amazed how brilliant this show is at combining the sadness (and inevitable) with joy, love and humour (hospital parking camping... or the famous farting 😆 ). I would normally stay far away from a show with such a sad topic, but here I love this show and can't wait for the new episodes.

Forbidden Marriage - I binged the first 4 episodes and it is so funny 😄 (Sorang dropping the books like eggs with the accompanying sounds. 😂)
All those modern references make me laugh and the Head Eunuch is a comedy gold. I'm only worried whether they will manage to keep the funny till the end (though with 12 episodes only they actually may have a chance to succeed?? 🤞🤞)

Jdrama Silent - still loving it (and waiting for subs for the final episode).

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate 🌲💫... and peaceful and happy (and healthy) days to all! ❤️

Reading your comments is like a serotonin boost.
I haven't heard of Spicy. I will need to check this out. I am not usually drawn to a drama with a probable sad ending, but you have me intrigued. Perhaps, it will be more in line with how Marriage Contract ended--leaving us knowing the inevitable without showing it.

Spicy is also known as Recipe for Farewell. It's definitely funnier and more uplifting than Marriage Contract (which I watched and loved as well). Though I think that here they may go till the very end... and yet still somehow leave us on a joyful/healing note.

Maybe comedic is a better word? I don't know, just all those bbq preparation talks (+the actual bbq)... and yes, the waiting-for-farting bit as well, made me laugh.

COMPLETED
May I Help You - I was okay with the ending, even the dad's death. If this had been 12 episodes with this story and minus the murder mystery, it'd have been a better show.

ONGOING
Alchemy of Souls S2 - I'm still liking it but some of the editing/ transitions are pretty awkward. It's like watching a play - EXIT SCENE LEFT, ENTER SCENE RIGHT…

The First Responders - No idea how this season is supposed to end.

The Youngest Son of a Conglomerate - I cried when the video will played. You got me with that one show. Looking forward to watching the last 2 episodes.

Summer Strike - What a bundle of misery this show is.

Curtain Call - I'm so confused about real Rhee Moon-sung and his motivations.

Unlock My Boss - I'm not particularly invested in the mystery but the show is funny. Esp. Ahn Nae-sang, who is my favourite thing about this show.

The Forbidden Marriage - The king and So-rang are a hoot together. Enjoying this.

Oh, there is one C-drama that is an adorable cat-centric drama, MAKE A WISH. The actress who plays the cat/human did an incredible job translating cat mannerisms to a human body. Just for that alone it is worth a watch, but then you have a cute couple and hijinks too.

My attention also zeroed on Accidently meow on you, but i'm waiting to see more extract to evaluate the chemistry, cuteness and global fun. Already I see that the pitch is (again) false... he seems to discover her identity quite fast. Why are cdrama pitch/description so bad?
The silence of the monster picked my interest last year (or a good number of months ago) with the unusual careers. But the first images looks watered in the cute direction.
I find it fun that you mention these drama out of the vast quantity of dramas, and that they are also on my surveillance list. Please keep us informed on how they turn up.

Unlock the boss
Dark clouds are looming; I am hopeful that keeping with the vibe of the drama so far they will wrap it up quickly and get back sunshine and rainbows. I love our team of misfits on a mission to solve the puzzle of the boss in the phone. I must say Bora the dad’s robot is so cute when it was crying because he was and the AR glasses I need a pair to have my favourites singing to me personally🤣

The forbidden marriage
Waiting for second episode to drop so I can watch both together. This is a show I would have loved to binge watch it is so funny and then I could fast forward through the evil step mum and vengeful palace minister who kills women just because.

New love playlist webdrama
We have entered the hard phase of misunderstandings and substitutes feeling the pain of the main leads faffing about. But trailers seem to show finally the original cast are all back. I just realised the girlfriend who has been missing was in Cheer up so maybe was only available for limited filming slots.

Three bold siblings
I have not finished last weeks episodes as the misleading game playing is front and centre now and so I will wait to fast forward where necessary the three episodes on Monday.

Buam dong Avengers
Will be interesting to see what happens in this stage of the story as everyone has hit hard times.

On hold
The Interest of Love

Completed

Silent - Japanese drama
This is a great drama addressing the issues within the deaf community including the differences of those born deaf and those who acquired deafness at a later stage and dating between a competent signing hearing person and a deaf person. It was good to see these issues being brought into the hearing community. I studied sign language and we spoke about these issues from historical and current perspective. As lip reading, use of sign language, cochlear implants and use of voice are all part of the contemporary deaf narrative.

The Fabulous
Loved this found family/slice of life set in the fashion world. I like the whole season drop approach so the viewer can choose whether to binge or watch at leisure.

Year end medley film
Korean version of New Year’s Eve style group of characters connected to a hotel over the days leading to Christmas.

Ridiculous light hearted way to spend an hour watching a job seeker finally getting a job only to find himself working in a start up that hasn’t started.

Dramas should be enjoyable so when they take time warming up there has to be something to make me want to put in the effort. I try to watch the four episodes to allow for the slow burns but I have decided that doesn’t mean I have to watch them all while it’s airing.

May I Help You (Series review) - Mood progression: D+ / D+ / D+ / D / D / D+ / D- / D-
The rushed conclusions to Hae An’s and Chung Ha’s arcs highlight them as pointless plot devices. And then we got the most senseless character death and an incredibly lazy explanation for Dong Joo’s abilities rushed in the finale. There’s some leeway perhaps to be given for the writing turning into the Tae Hee Trauma show, but regardless it’s just horrible.

Recipe For Farewell (Episode 7-8) - Mood: B
If I had to state one downside about this show, it would be the editing: it’s not immediately clear if a scene happened in the past or present and there’s quite a bit of transition back and forth. It’s a happy problem given that the story is solid but it’s a problem nonetheless. I hope that the show won’t dramatise the sister learning the truth, that’s just too cliche?

Missing: The Other Side 2 (Episode 1-2) - Mood: C+
Song Geon Hee as a cameo feels so wasteful (he’s a star in the making imo) but the gang’s back! For what it’s worth, I like the new development with the new villagers not being physically constrained to their village but I’m worried about another lurking conspiracy. At least it seems the writer knows about the need to explain given Wook’s questions?

Unlock the Boss (Episode 5-6) - Mood: D+
This show is truly making me conflicted as it concludes its 1st half: on one hand, you have great moments when Min Ah manages to soften the heart of the loan shark or when In Sung gifts his father the AR glasses, but on the other hand, it couldn’t be less boring of a cliffhanger with In Sung being framed. As of this week, I lost interest in the murder mystery.

The Interest of Love (Episode 1-2) - Mood: D
I already expected the usual from a angsty office melodrama and yet I was still disappointed by the characterisation: it baffles me as to why Sang Su has such a strong lust for Su Yeong that even the viewers are subjected to such emotion and turmoil from him. I don’t have good feelings about the 2nd female lead who looks poised to become an actual pita.

The Forbidden Marriage (Episode 3-4) - Mood: D
Even if it’s only 12 episodes, the narrative is already dragging, what with the random side arc of the single muskeeters, the ever-changing schemes of the villains or the cliche love triangle rearing its ugly head. It’s not bad enough that I will drop it but I feel like I’m treating it as a query to judge the acting skills of the leads. Well, at least it’s not a hate-watch?

Summer Strike (Episode 9-10) - Mood: D-
What’s with shows suddenly derailing during the penultimate week these days?! Literally everything that could’ve gone wrong went wrong: a random murder mystery out of nowhere, the hypocritical dad slapping Yeo Reum, Ji Young feeling guilty, separation trope for both couples. I facepalmed when Yeo Reum advised Jae Hoon to ghost Bom: like girl what?!

ALCHEMY OF SOULS 2 (Ep 3-4): The last two episodes were better because there was ACTION to move the story along. Jin Mu's attempted trap to kill BY with a fake Naksu was cleverly countered by Uk with the surprising help of Lady Jin. The secondary characters stories are not very interesting since my focus is still trying to figure out who or what BY/Naksu 2 really is and who or what Uk is yearning for since his Mudeok is gone. The basic mythology of the show is still a mess. I did remember someone pointed out a week or so ago that if BY was by Uk's side, the wraiths would go away. I think that happened at the end of episode 4 which hopefully means Master Lee was wrong about BY's soul being gone.

CURTAIN CALL (Ep 13-14): This really is dragging to the finish line like an untrained marathon runner. The reveal of the real Moon-seong to the family was anti-climatic and did not have the fireworks we were hoping for. The only highlight was Mr. Jung giving his blasting speech to the grandchildren which should have been done at the beginning of the show instead of deceiving them. Spoiled and selfish grandchildren blaming everyone but the fates was true but it is too late to make any difference. Greed is more important than grief or regret.

THE STRANGER (2022 Drama Special, also known as "Let's Meet in an Unfamiliar Season") This is really the first drama that tells the story of COVID-19 confirmed patients in 2020 who enter a residential treatment center, communicating through windows and comforting each other during unfamiliar and fearful quarantine times. What I like about these KBS drama specials is that the story is condensed into one episode so the writing, scenes and direction has to be tight. I liked that the writer did not sugar coat the issue and made the pandemic the focus of the story. Except for the very tropey ending, it was above average special. Han Ji-eun and Kim Gun-woo did not have to show great acting range but that fit into the mood of the story.

ALCHEMY OF SOULS—I am a giddy watcher. I was going to wait, but I couldn’t. Coming to the second season felt like opening up a beloved book.
I don’t know how the transition between actresses can be this smooth when I adored JSM as Naksu/Mu Deok, but GYJ really is charming as amnesic Naksu. And this version of Wook breaks my heart and kudos to LJW for bringing this moody, broken Wook to life. These two together are showing a crackly chemistry that seems easy and natural.
The other characters are still enjoyable too—with an exception of a certain person who better get his just deserts.

ARANG AND THE MAGISTRATE—Re-watching while reading JB and GF’s recaps. While the drama shows its age and budget, these pale in comparison to the rich world building and excellent script played out with great acting and chemistry. I am flying through it spellbound.

C-Dramas: I was about to give up on these as I am tired of the same bubbly, slightly dumb FL attracted to the genius, cold hero trope playing out. Then, I gave in and watched
LOVE BETWEEN FAIRY AND DEVIL. Ironic, since the ML’s could be described as above and yet the execution plays out differently. And I am a sucker for a good Beauty and the Beast retelling. Now I get the fuss about the drama. Thank you, Beanies, because I am immersed and enjoying this delightful fantasy.

THE RATIONAL LIFE—finally a C-drama heroine who is smart, savvy and sympathetic. And a couple who are equals in work ethic, intelligence, and charm AND respect each other to boot! My cheeks hurt when I watch these two together. The natural, organic transition to lovers and the easy chemistry between the actors make this a treat. Plus, unlike many other Noona romances our heroine is not wishy-washy about her choice and once she makes it she is all in. (Sadly, I could care less about the other characters (beside the moms) and the new energy cars industry).

I never thought I would think Dylan Wang would be adorable or charming ( I could not stomach his character in meteor garden), but these two dramas have made me a fan.

I am at episode 10 of The Rational life and loving it. Thanks so much for the recommendation.

I have always said that K drama is a 16 episode advert for all things Korean and the issues raised in this drama is no different. The electric car market is highly competitive in real life and China has some serious contenders in the mix which they are launching on the domestic and global market. The issues they raise in the drama about the prejudice against these alternatives to petrol cars and the positive impact on the environment reflect the current views globally so it’s a good ways to raise awareness and encourage debate in a soft sell way. Just as one of the K dramas, I think it was Dare to dream, highlighted the impact of car fumes on babies due to the height of the baby in a pushchair.

I think another thing besides the Bubbly Fairy (well, true, she IS a fairy after all) is that cdramas have a bit different dynamic (and roughly 1 ep of kdrama ~ 2 eps of cdrama)... and that this is xianxia.

My wife had a similar experience even though she loves these shows. She started the first episode and then dropped the show. Later she went back and tried again- and it became one of her favorites.

4

Actually even more. Since there are more number of total episodes and cdramas usually release around 6 to 8 episodes on the first day. So their pacing for the first impression is kind of different. For LBFD it takes around 9 to 10 episodes to actually get into it.

What you say about cdramas is an unfortunate stereotype that a few internationally popular shows have cemented in viewers. However, there's a lot more to cdramaland and recently they are experimenting with several genres as well. Though, I still go about that througg recommendations because like kdramas there can be several misses too. Though they are slowly becoming my main source of dramas especially in the rom com genre.
Nonetheless, I'm glad you watched LBFD and I can see are on a Dylan Wang high. Did you know his new show releases Dec 27?

Curtain Call
I like the slow development where you get to know everyone and their motivations. I don’t really feel the romance, though. But it is good enough to watch it with Halmeoni’s and the hotel’s fate as the main points.
Reborn Rich
Great episodes last weeks, and I’m very much looking forward to the final this week!
Finished May I Help You
A really good drama with really good final episodes. A lot happened but there was enough time to wrap everything up. I loved the wonderful relationships and families, especially the main couple. There were no tantrums or unnecessary secrets, but trust, patience and slowly opening up to each other and working through their traumas together. Bonus: the uncles’ hero walk and the MLs glam up in the final shot 😊
Summer Strike
This went very dramatic in the last two episodes; did we need that? I guess we do need some drama to prepare for a happy resolution in the finale.
Unlock My Boss
I’m liking this more and more. Without paying attention to the succession drama and conspiracies, it’s really fun to watch. Love Ma Pi and the little girl!
Finished You Are My Spring
I enjoyed this a lot, especially the psychological parts, often in voice-over, about guilt, crime, realizing other people’s feelings, and more. For me, the balance between slice of life, romance and thriller was good. But in the last episodes, some of the issues weren’t really resolved (or I just didn’t get it?) and the romance between two thirty-somethings was just too coy, as if they were high schoolers…

Oh, really? I adored their romance because they communicated (well, with one big exception) and some of their talks were the most romantic I've seen for how sensitive they are to each other's wounds and healing process. I never saw the coyness, more...innocence? Hmm...maybe it is time for a re-watch. 😉

No, I didn't read up on DB on this, I probably should have. And yes, the ML's relationship was beautiful and sensitive on an emotional level, what I meant was the bodily aspect, if I may say so... After that beautiful kiss on the rooftop they rarely even touched each other and acted so shy. And Da Jung was so shocked to see her brother and his girlfriend making out in the stairwell, and about them spending nights and even living together. This from people who had been in relationships and even been married before...

Alchemy of Souls: I struggle with what to say about this show every week because whatever our souls are made of, it and mine are the same. All Wuthering Heights references intended. Jang Uk is ever so slightly opening up to a person who is helping him heal from the death of the woman he loves, while also being that woman. It’s so complex and beautiful and painful and glorious. I’m just here for every second. And all the turtle jokes.

May I Help You: I honestly loved the explanation of Dong-joo’s power, though I’m intrigued about how Father Michael knew the whole time. I honestly don’t think the tragedy at the end of episode 15 was at all necessary, but I’m not willing to let that completely ruin my good impression of the show. There were so many things that it did that were interesting and beautiful, and so of course it’s disappointing that it went off the rails in the same ways and at the same times as countless other dramas. Still, I was really satisfied with all the remaining characters’ arcs, so overall I’m calling it a win.

Unlock My Boss: I love that our CEO/cell phone is starting to trust In-seong with things that he himself is not great at. Like relationships. In-seong has proven himself with Min-ah, and then does it again with Ma-pi and Se-yeon, who are understandably hostile. Seon-joo still vaguely threatens to replace In-seong with some other rando, but you can tell he means it less and less.

Reborn Rich: I haven’t watched the new episode yet so I’m hoping to catch up and finish up today. All the fingers and toes crossed that what has been an exceptional drama finishes strong!

Reborn Rich: 8.0

Forbidden Marriage: 7.0 A lot of fun thru day 5, although seemed unrealistic even by sageuk standards. Then day 5 lost its touch.

Alchemy of Souls s2: 8.5

Trolley: 6.0 Not dreadful but didn't catch my interest. Likely drop after day 1.

Missing: the Other Side 2: 6.0 Day 1 seemed promising (silly me). Day 2 dragged. When a case-of-the-week show has a 2nd season, are they:
1: Giving us the s2 because they have great ideas for the cases????
2: Desperately forcing s2 on us even if they don't have good ideas and are making up garbage cases?
3: Digging up dead concepts that weren't good enough and were rejected from s1?
4: Covering for their inadequacy by padding the show with lots of sentimental filler?
This time option one seems unlikely. Likely drop after day 2.

Unlock the Boss: 7.5

May I Help You: 6.0 Final week was sentimental, formulaic, predictable, draggy. That one new character at the very end was ok, but otherwise -- where's the asteroid when we need it?

Connect: 8.0 (For ep 2) Girl suspects someone is a serial killer, so she goes up to a Rooftop of Doom to confront him. #toostupidtolive

The Fabulous: 6.0 Uninteresting premise, but Chae Soo-bin! Turns out she's not enough and I'm out halfway thru ep 1. At least I think I saw the bit that made them postpone showing it soon after the Halloween disaster.

Work Later, Drink Now 2: __ On hold, likely drop.

Alchemy of Souls s1 rewatch: 9.0 For days 1/3

It might look like I'm in a drama slump, but it's more a distraction. As X-mas break approached I started thinking about how I could spend my extra free time, then jumped the gun and started my entertainments before the break, which cut into my drama time. So I'm less likely to start a show that doesn't sound promising, and I'm certain to drop a show if the first hour or two don't seem pretty good. This year's projects happen to be an Alchemy s1 rewatch and replaying an old computer game, but could have been almost anything.

I want to sue Summer Strike for the misleading trailer and synopsis. Everyone sucks except for the 4 leads and even that is waning.

Trolley: Tension, Sexual assault, Baby mommas, drugs, secrets, and politics. Phew. I am intrigued enough to continue.

Unlock the Boss: It is getting serious and I don't want that. Romance is heating up though. I continue to enjoy this.

The interest of love: Hmmmmm. I will give this a couple more episodes because I really like the female lead, even MGY is too young to be playing her. I don't really care for anybody else though.

Reborn Rich: I am so sad we are at the end. I hope there is an actual resolution though.

The Forbidden Marriage: I hope our FL keeps being hilarious, because she is the show. Also Kim Woo Seok is a really good actor and I hope he gets a lead role in his next drama because he is acting circles around Kim Young Dae. No, I don't have SLS, but it is noticeable, lol.

Chae Soo-bin is the heart of this show. She is a great actress and I hope she gets a better costar in the future.

Her character's model friend is being played by a novice: Park Hee-jung has never appeared in a drama before but is actually doing a decent job portraying a model, something made easier by the fact that she actually is a model.

Under the Queen's Umbrella: Why yes, I was in the mood for a whole lot of political intrigue driven primarily by badass women. Really enjoying this so far, although the Queen Dowager union should really protest the fact that they're always portrayed as spawn-of-Satan evil.

Perhaps you might look at the Queen Dowager union in a different light.
In THE FORBIDDEN MARRIAGE (through eps 4) the Queen Dowager Daebi is being portrayed as quite grandmotherly and nice and truly concerned about her grandson the King.
This might rate a letter of protest for the QD Union. Screenwriters should know how the Queen Dowager must be portrayed: as you describe above.

Forbidden Marriage: Enjoyed the first episode and probably will continue as long as it keeps not taking itself too seriously.

The Fabulous: I like that they are all messy and imperfect. I honestly wouldn't stick around for 16 episodes but 8 is doable for what seems pretty standard k-drama fare. Also I can binge since they dropped all the episodes.

Interest of Love: Dropped after one episode. Yeah, the phone just happened to break. The one place there would still be a landline is in a bank. I just can't.

Am I watching 'Red Balloon' and 'Summer Strike'? I claim I'm watching them, though I'm not actually sitting down and watching them. I've also got 'Behind Every Star' on my queue but making no progress.

I am already halfway into episode 6 of the C-drama 'She and her Perfect Husband', though. A classic fake marriage soap opera.

I've also got a C-drama and a J-drama going that are such embarrassingly cringy shows I'm embarrassed to tell you what they are, so I'll allow you to speculate.

Is one of them the one about the leads being into cats and the ML is the typical young, cold CEO? I picked it up because cats are awesome. I watched it for 10 minutes and then had to turn it off. It made me cringe, so I was not vibing with it.

Alchemy of Souls: LJW is killing it in making me feel so sad for him. GYJ is excelling in bringing the tricky transition to life, but I think LJW's yearning helps make you want to believe that this is all one Naksu/Mudeokie. I loved how Wook got out of Jin Mu's trap. OG Naksu would have been so proud of her pupil! I do wish they don't try to push Yun-ok into being sour-faced, jealous person just because of her 3-year crush on Wook.

Forbidden Marriage: Not digging the intimacy-night and the ensuing contrived and overdramatic fight between the male leads. It seemed like nonsense that the king could be totally unaware of it given his servants' past attempts and all the obvious honeymoon suite- decorations. *eyeroll* The drama works best when So-rang is on screen and being charismatic and funny and in action. I love how the drama pushes the boundaries on the sexual innuendoes. The drooping...LOL.

New Life Begins. Cdram. Finished it. OMG, what a beautiful, satisfying, and warm family drama with multi-faceted characters. Was every arc a winner? No, but it kept quality pretty consistent. Taking place over the course of 3 years, we got to see the characters mature and then go on to make things better for those who come after them. The reformed selection scene in the finale had me choked up. Also LOL when we can see the actors' breaths in the palace scenes vs no visible breath in the scenes taking place in the dangerously cold, remote town. I'm feeling a bit of a post-high depression after finishing this gem.

I truly think to call it a gentle masterpiece is an apt description. New Life Begins is a really good show that I won’t hesitate to recommend to almost everyone. And yes, not every arc was a winner, but what normally is lacking in Kdramas these days could be found here: it stuck its landing. The ending was a satisfying one.

The arriving holidays actually cut into drama watching this week. My son is home for Christmas after working in Syracuse, New York for a year. This has resulted in my wife taking a break from watching Chinese Costume dramas. Instead she has been on a steady diet of Christmas movies, Ingmar Bergman movies and mystery dramas. But she plans to start watching THE LONG RIVER soon.

We have really been enjoying THE FORBIDDEN MARRIAGE.

I have really enjoyed the Chinese romcom HI VENUS as well.

While it may not be great drama, we have also really enjoyed the first four episodes of THE FABULOUS. Chae Soo-bin is perfect as the FL- I still remember her wonderful cameo in the final episode of SHOPPING KING LOUIS and we all remember her performance in I’M NOT A ROBOT. Does the show have a strong plot? No, but it is entertaining and fun.

We are now at the halfway point of THREE BOLD SIBLINGS. We have heard background about the ML’s embittered cousin and some of what happened with the Birth Secret. Meanwhile, the ML’s aunt is about to discover that she is pregnant with the only good news being that, as an Orthopedic Surgeon, at least the FL’s younger brother could support his family. But the best moments in episode 25 were those between Mooyoung and Sorim- as she gets him to admit that, yes, the Christmas Tree really was a Love Letter to her and that he likes her a lot. Then in episode 26 he is comforting her because she is in trouble at work- facing a Disciplinary Meeting after being (clumsily) framed by her evil EX who wants to get her fired. That episode ended wonderfully: She is sitting at the table facing her team- eyes downcast- with the CEO is coming. He arrives and sits at the table across from her- she raises her eyes and there is her guy looking back at her- he really is the CEO (of a substantial company) just as he had told her twice before (but she had just thought he was boasting). Of course, the next episodes will show the two of them on a very bumpy road indeed. Did I mention how much I hate the Ex?

I will be taking time off from work next week and catching up on many dramas.

Just finished episode 2 of Big Bet (Hulu) and I'm hooked so far. Glad to see characters who aren't at the top of their game by 22! Veteran film and drama actors are so good! A lot of flashbacks/time changes, but not enough that I can't follow.

Hi Venus — I’m loving this cdrama romcom so much. The two leads are both charming, and their scenes together (during which they communicate!) carry the show. Not a surprise that it’s from the writer of Go Ahead and Day of Becoming You — it has a lot of the same energy, and locations for that matter.

Alchemy of Souls 2 — this show is such a visual treat. The scene with the fireflies was gorgeous! And I’m surprised by how convincing I’m finding the chemistry between the two leads. Still very nervous about the Hong Sisters landing this thing, but I am along for the ride.

Interest of Love — I watched 10 minutes and stopped. The credit card thing just felt so contrived. Going to give it a few weeks and see what people think.

Lighter and Princess — watched the first three eps. On the fence about continuing but what I’ve seen so far has made me very wistful about the unreleased Arthur Chen drama Immortality as I think he’s born to have historical hair.

The Fabulous — going to give it a shot for my fave CSB!

Hi Venus is amazing and yes not surprisingly because it's by the director, writer pair of DOBY. The writer paired with another writer for Find Yourself and Go Ahead who have recently together worked on the Liu Yifei, Li Xian drama Windy place. I know I'll be looking forward to it next year. Coming back to Hi Venus, Joseph Zeng is great here but I love the camaraderie of the main leads goibg naturally from strangers to friends and now lovers.

Seeing that a few different people also stopped watching The Interest of Love in the middle of the first episode. We can't all be wrong.

I also watched/am watching (list not exhaustive lol):

Currently Airing
Alchemy of Souls: Everyone's doing such great work here (except the editor, the work there is just okay)
Reborn Rich: Moved past my frustration with how misleading Shin Hyun-bin's casting was just to focus it all on the drama's cowardice in addressing the Hyun-woo question

Old Stuff
Oh My General: Actually dropped around ep 13 because not enough was happening
Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food: Even though the story isn't as good as One Spring Night, the couple's theme song is much better
One Spring Night: I am kind of always watching this drama (and wishing the music was better)
Watcher: I miss Seo Kang-joon
Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim: And am really in a Han Suk-kyu mood
Psychologist: I am trying my best to get past the weird "see, she's super smart" edits

I have not been watching much K dramas right now since the work schedule is tight.

Red balloon (1-2): Its so messed up. I remembered the Love series of TV chosun that made me stressed out and pull my hair in frustration with all the stupid choices. This is another mess. I did not like the any of the leads. They all are so frustrating. Why do the best friends think it’s a good choice to pursue their best friend’s husband? I like SJH normally but her character did not appeased me here. Mild threatening the brother in law to fire the book keeper so that her sis can have a job??? Its there I understood how cunning she is beneath the mask of calmness. Ba da also frustrated me with all her noble entitlement and lack of understanding. Might give it another week before dropping

Interest of love (1-2): Dropped. I felt suffocated while watching it and I disliked both the leads after the premiere week.

Fabulous (1—8): Minho & Chae soo bin’s arc was boring and flat and cliché esp CSB’s character. She is introduced as a problem solver but all we could see was the ML saving the day everyday except for that airport scene after which she put the blame on him. All throughout the series she was the one with the least character development. Min ho’s facial expression remained monotonic all throughout. The highlights of the series were the arcs of Joseph and the model seon ho. They both were so good and had a meatier part and growth. Kim Min kyus’s character was totally unnecessary and it was so irritating to watch his character. I don’t think his arc contributed anything in the plot overall apart from continuously stalking the FL and crossing the private boundaries of the ML. Although overall the story does not have much substance. I enjoyed the glitz and glamour.

OLDER
Alchemy of souls S1 (1-7): I saved this to binge watch along with the S2. The story is unfolding quite well except I loved GYJ a bit more than JSM.

May I Help You?: I wish the show had not flattened one character into a pure villain and the last death was more than unnecessary, but I enjoyed a lot of it and am not sorry I watched.
The Forbidden Marriage: This gives the feel of a Korean Christmas panto. The FL is hilarious.
Alchemy of Souls Part 2: What can I say? Totally enthralled all over again. I can’t look away whenever Lee Jae-wook is onscreen. I do wish the ML and FL had equal development arcs, but part 1 made it clear that was not going to happen.
