Adamas: Episodes 13-14

Could it get any more intense?! The penultimate week of Adamas sees a lot of our characters coming together and uniting over a common goal, but at the same time, factions of power are forming, rifts are suffered, and lives are lost. What a set of episodes!

EPISODES 13-14 WEECAP

Adamas: Episodes 13-14

This show just does not stop! Rather than lose steam, Adamas is doing the exact opposite and every episode seems to get more and more intense. Did I mention it was intense? Also, we finally have our long-awaited twin switch this week, though it was quite minor, since precedence was given to all the backstory and extended flashbacks. I knew we had a great collection of actors in this drama, but they really knocked it out of the park this week. I think I still have goosebumps!

We pick up with Soo-hyun visiting Lee Chang-woo in prison, this time wiser and armed with a lot more info. He eventually reveals that he now knows Lee Chang-woo is his biological father, and this scene is not only exploding with amazing acting, but quite a chunk of backstory that I’ve been itching to see play out.

Adamas: Episodes 13-14 Adamas: Episodes 13-14

We see the infamous events from 22 years ago through Lee Chang-woo’s eyes — everything from how he found out that his son was actually sons to the adamas-stealing scheme that Team Leader Lee convinced him to partake in. Lee Chang-woo says he knew that Lee was playing him. Even though his greed made him agree to the scheme, it sounds like he expected Lee to kill him and take all after the theft was executed and the fake adamas put in the real one’s place.

In the present, Lee Chang-woo tells Soo-hyun that he gave and stuck by his false confession in order to keep the boys safe. He knows now, as well as they do, that once that secret is revealed, their heads are all on the chopping block.

Adamas: Episodes 13-14

Turns out the prison scene and the flashbacks are the calmest parts of our episodes this week — elsewhere, everything goes haywire. To start, Chairman Kwon decides to test Tae-sung’s loyalty/usefulness and takes him to the creepy “fishing” location where far too many people have died.

And waiting there all tied up for interrogation is… Team Leader Lee, definitely not dead, even after being poisoned! It’s a hair-raising scene with him and the chairman, but after the chairman realizes that Lee truly doesn’t know where the real adamas — he says he has no reason to keep Lee alive. Oh, and Tae-sung can do the deed to prove himself. Heo Sung-tae’s acting blew me awayyyy this week, and this scene is only the first of it. Anyway, he kicks a tied up Lee into the water, but we find out later he’ll be rescued and that keeping Lee alive was a part of the deal Hye-soo and Woo-shin made.

Adamas: Episodes 13-14

Meanwhile, more mayhem! The SIH is, as expected, offered up as a scapegoat for the terrorist attack and is forced to disband. Hyuk-pil in particular takes the weight of the thing; I really like this character even with all of his terrible ways. Later, we find out that he’s retained four of his most trusted agents, and they’ll help our other good guys, and protect Soo-hyun in particular.

But before that can happen, even more mayhem! Dragon Lady Kwon doesn’t have long for this earth — she gets poisoned in prison and moved to Hye-soo’s hospital where she’s about to get offed by Team A, until Hye-soo saves her. This will all become important later.

But before that, Woo-shin masquerades as his prosecutor brother and talks to the inmate responsible for the prison massacre that opened our drama so many episodes ago. He gathers a whole bunch of info about how the whole thing was ordered by Haesong to get rid of one man in particular (so there was a lot more to it then just the death penalty political scheming).

Adamas: Episodes 13-14

Back to Tae-sung — he officially loses his sh!t after everything that he and the SIH have been through, and all the lives lost to no avail. He grabs a gun from his secret armory, marches into the chairman’s office, and shoots him in cold blood. It’s insane. The chairman is secretly rushed to Hye-soo’s hospital, where all is kept top secret and the entire VIP ward is cleared for his benefit.

He survives, and no one is pleased. Hyun-jo is like a caged rat and just wants the succession to be finalized before he dies; Tae-sung is still determined to kill him and plans to do it with a pair of scissors; but Hye-soo, who also wished he had died, has a far more nefarious plan in mind.

Adamas: Episodes 13-14 Adamas: Episodes 13-14

Hye-soo has been squirreling away power while her husband loses it — she has amassed enough of it now that she sits coldly in the VIP room in a red dress while a deranged-looking Dragon Lady Kwon is let into the room.

Her fury is more terrifying than ever, and Chairman Kwon might have woken up, but he doesn’t stay awake long. His faithful servant stabs him in the heart with her walking stick blade, claiming that since he has her son’s heart, she has the right to it. Gosh, this scene is horrifying and yet mesmerizing; we’re at Greek tragedy levels at this point! And so, Chairman Kwon is dead. The death will be covered up. Hye-soo claims control of Haesong.

Adamas: Episodes 13-14

Meanwhile, our favorite novelist and our favorite prosecutor have hatched a plan, but we don’t know the full details yet. Soo-hyun is met by Sun on his way out of the prison (ugh, I really hate her, and no amount of horrific backstory can fix it), and she makes creepy taunts towards him. Then we jump to Woo-shin, who’s in his car and there’s this uncomfortable moment where he’s stopped by a truck and he knows something isn’t right…

Before we know it, Woo-shin is captured in a shipping container with Lee Chang-woo… but it’s kind of all going according to plan? We learn that the boys are now both GPS tracking enabled, and that they’ve been rapid texting each other all of a sudden because of this plan of theirs. In the words of their father: “What have you two done?”

Adamas: Episodes 13-14

Soo-hyun and Seo-hee are tracking Woo-shin’s location and are off to the rescue, but OMG it’s a real nail-biter. A Team A agent is there, and starts torturing Woo-shin (via a hammer to his hand)(the hand with the tracker in it), and I don’t know who is in more agony — Woo-shin himself, who eventually passes out from the pain, or his father who has to watch. But what I do know is that in the war of Song twins in my heart, I am swinging more towards Woo-shin. I just love his sharp mind, and his bravery wowed me in these episodes.

Anyway, his tracker goes out, and Soo-hyun mutters in the car what we’re all screaming from our couches: “Woo-shin, please stay alive!” The Team A agent is trying to get the location of the adamas out of Lee Chang-woo, but the only thing that Lee Chang-woo gets out of is his handcuffs. Which he then uses to kill the agent and save his son.

Adamas: Episodes 13-14

They emerge from the shipping container just as Soo-hyun, Seo-hee, and the remaining SIH agents find them, and even though it’s a bloody and heartbreaking moment, it was squee-worthy. Woo-shin collapses onto his brother, and our team of good guys are finally forming a single front.

There is something so incredibly satisfying about the way the drama brings together all the characters at this point in the story. While they all go into hiding together, they’re joined by Tae-sung, and it really feels like a family reunion. So many players from so many plots, all in the same room, all on the same side! But not for long.

Adamas: Episodes 13-14 Adamas: Episodes 13-14

Everyone might be together, but they don’t see eye to eye, and we linger with the characters for a while here as they interact and try to figure out what to do next. This chunk of scenes is just jaw-droppingly good — raw, desperate, and full of all the tension each character is feeling. There are several heated exchanges about how far they are willing to go. Will they cross the line and act like Team A to take down Team A? Or will they seek justice while themselves remaining just?

Every single exchange here was amazing, but my favorite was definitely Woo-shin — still a mess after being tortured – who limps into the room and tells them there’s another way. But rather than agree, it’s more standoffs, whether between him and Lee Chang-woo, or Soo-hyun, who literally has to be dragged away by Tae-sung and the SIH cuties.

Adamas: Episodes 13-14 Adamas: Episodes 13-14

In the end, Soo-hyun decides to stay with the “cross the line” team to take down Team Leader Lee, while Seo-hee and Woo-shin are excused — and I don’t know which one is more heartbroken. Still, I love the subtle moment Seo-hee and Soo-hyun share before he turns to leave.

Back at his apartment with Seo-hee and Dong-rim, Woo-shin does what he does best: stare thoughtfully off into space and figure things out. We’ve seen him do it many times before, and now he does it while listening to Lee Chang-woo’s statement to his brother — all while his hand shakes from the trauma it endured.

Then, in this absolutely delicious chills-inducing moment, Woo-shin finally realizes where the adamas is hidden (good grief, Ji Sung’s ears were even acting here!!). This scene — and the way the whole thing played out — was so completely satisfying that I don’t even mind that I figured out where the adamas was about four episodes ago. Also, I love you Woo-shin.

Adamas: Episodes 13-14

One of the main arguments during the family reunion was the deal Woo-shin cut with Hye-soo. No one else thinks she can be trusted, and after this week’s episodes, I’m not sure if they’re wrong!

Team Leader Lee survives death #2 and is called to the Haesong mansion along with Mr. Jung. They march into the chairman’s office and who is seated on the throne but Hye-soo herself! She’s kept Lee alive as a part of her deal with Woo-shin, but she also claims that she wants to be partners with Team A, and prepares to hatch yet another deal with Team Leader Lee. She wants him to take out the SIH (which she calls the biggest threat to Haesong), and Lee agrees since there’s a little someone he wants to kill too.

Hye-soo also wants to know who was responsible for the hit on her beloved Min-jo, and we learn it was a directive straight from Hyun-jo to Sun. I don’t trust Hye-soo one bit, but what I do trust is her love for Min-jo. I think that will win out in the end (but don’t quote me if I’m wrong!).

Adamas: Episodes 13-14

While Woo-shin rushes out after his eureka moment, Seo-hee has her own and heads out to talk to her much-hated Candidate Hwang, where she tries to convince him to turn on Haesong.

And then finally, we have Soo-hyun, Tae-sung, and the rest of the SIH, who discover the coordinates of a previous Team A hideout thanks to Soo-hyun being smart, the deceased agent reading Woo-shin’s book, and the fact that Lee Chang-woo is giving them a lot of much-needed insight on how Team A functions.

They locate and infiltrate a creepy abandoned tourist motel, and it’s super suspenseful as they wander through the building (oh, Adamas, why do you keep doing this to us!). What they find — in a moment of real horror — is basically a mass grave of all the people Team A has “disappeared” for Haesong. It’s positively hair-raising. And it’s a mean cliff-hanger too, because we have to wait a whole week for our finale episodes. There’s a ton to pull together still, but the action — and characters — have reached such a crescendo that it’s glorious.

This show gets so intense I have to pause multiple times just to calm down. The scene where Soo-hyun sees Sun just as Woo-shin is surrounded by the truck was so nerve-wracking that I actually paused and walked away.

In spite of all the foreshadowing, I will faithfully hope for both twins to make it out alive. Pretty please show 🤞.

Recap is here!!!

IS IT NEXT WEEK YET??????????

OMG! that reveal.. Woo Shin finding out.. filling the gaps.. gosh, I love him!!!

I will never see ‘fishing’ the same way anymore. lol

I have grown fond of Mr.Choi over the course of time. Even Kang.. Now i worry he may not make it alive.. I don’t even know who will make it alive at this point.
Choi, SIH head Kang, Lee Chang Woo… the sidekicks.. oh no.. I worry..

That scene where he shot the Chairman.. wow.. I did not see that coming. But I felt it.. That scene was gold!

I had completely forgotten about the massacre in ep 1 and it was a nice tie back to that case. Interesting!!

Hye-soo!! wow… I love how her character was revealed in layers. But now I am scared… I dont know if Woo Shin was right to trust her.

and OMG!! Dragon Lady Kwon!! that murder was wild.

Also peeps, I did not survive that trailer scene.. I could barely watch poor Woo Shin get hurt.. so so painful to watch..

And poor detective Ko... such a smart clue even in death...
that last scene... wow...

I think we are heading to a major showdown... the end of Haesong (unless, Hye Soo has other plans)...
chairman's son is just dumb.. can't wait for him to die. lol.

At first I was quite disappointed that Choi Tae-sung was too incompetent to shoot Chairman Kwon, but this way Ms Kwon at least had the chance for her bloody revenge. So she partly followed my script, but it would have been more satisfying if she had turned the knife on herself as well. Let's see what else is to come.

I was waiting for your recap @missvictrix 😍. I would have liked it if you make an appreciation post for this drama. (✷‿✷)
I have no words , literally!!
Every one associated with this drama deserves appreciation.
Firstly the writer... plot is just too good!
Cinematography... Top notch!
Direction... awesome!
Casting... No chance you can complain about anything!!
( Actress playing Sun has done no wrong, it's just she doesn't suit the character and I'm okay with it cuz I wouldn't have liked a male psycho or another lady similar to Ms. Lee.)

And acting .... I'm ready to fight with those whoever dare to raise finger on the acting of any actor.👊

Ji sung. Ji sung. What can say!!?
I won't be satisfied after Adamas ... Pls recommend me his dramas guys.

Soo Hyun's interaction with LCW.
Soo Hyun's interaction with Sun.
When Soo Hyun said, "Pls stay alive Woo shinah."
Fear on woo shin's face when he was abducted. His groaning when he was tortured.
His expression when he rested his head on Soo Hyun's shoulder.
Soo Hyun and Taesung's chemistry. ( This one is what I loved the most )
Soo Hyun getting mad on Wooshin.
Woo shin pointing gun towards LCW.
When he said, "Someone will, similarly, point gun to Soo Hyun."
When Soo Hyun said, "Did you just fired at Woo shin?"
When he asked Soe hee and Woo Shin to stay out of it.
That sweet moment when Woo shin and Soe Hee were leaving.
Woo Shin washing and treating his own hand.
Him finding out where real Adamas is.
Everything. l can't stop praising any of it.

I'm in love with his walk, talk and even his moment......( ◜‿◝ )♡

Ha ha. I see you have been consumed. Is this your first drama of his?
you can watch kill me, heal me and familiar wife. The former is him in 3 roles. He is a riot.
Devils judge is ok, he is good. Drama is a bit extra and OTT.
Doctor John is very avg.
Protect the boss is a old drama. I didn’t like it so much when I saw it, he is a baby in that. but he is good.
don’t watch Secret Love. lol.
His movies ps partner (R rated for some sex scenes, but his acting is top notch) and confession are very good.

I liked the movie Confession. It was a bit dark. The 3 leads were solid! Ji Sung's acting was too good. I liked Joo Ji Hoon and Kwang Soo too.
Secret Love - OMG! I sat through the whole drama with some FF. It's a hardcore melodrama. and insane..The FL basically lets the ML abuse/hate her becos he thinks she killed his gf in an accident.. but then they fall for each other..
but it can be a good watch if you like 'it's so bad it's so good' categories. lol

2

@mayhemf, thanks for the heads up. I was planning to watch confession this weekend though. As for secret love, am not equipped for that drama now :D

Can it get more intense? It did get more intense. Everything went positively downward spiral so quickly and in intense fashion.

Everyone, Woo-shin, Su-hyeon, Lee Changwoo, Dragon Lady Kwon, Chairman Kwon, Hye-soo...I was on the edge.

Everyone clearly knows where their loyalties lie except for Hye-soo. She seems to have a mind of her own. And she's confident in her game. Never ever did I think she'd pull the strings that effected the death of Chairman Kwon (I guess this death is final), and in such calm serene cold-blooded fashion. That sequence packed in all its punches, I clutched my chest when Dragon Lady Kwon drove the knife deeper. I was shocked. She really had great chemistry with Chairman Kwon even in bad blood.
Hye-soo is scary at this point. I'm clear on her motivation but worried about what she'll do. I do want her to effect Sun's demise.

I don't know who has more smarts between the twins. Woo-shin tickles my wits end more than Su-hyeon, but they're both so competent it feels like bias.

Choi Taesung shooting Chairman Kwon was the last I was expecting, but it pointed out the fact that Hyunjo is lacking. This is the second time his antics is backfiring on his father. Except this time, it cost him his father's life which he wanted all the same but just not now.

If anyone is to finish off Sun, I want it to be in Lee Changwoo's hands.

The scene was the exact relaxant we needed in order to wade through the what was going on onscreen for close to 100 minutes in this two days. Even if it was just a moment, I was jolted into laughter for some seconds then collected myself together to keep on watching😅.

It failed before it began. I feel nary a thing for the story. Whether it was shown now or many episodes ago, I doubt the execution of that story would have impact.

4

I mean ... both sisters are detestable. So I don't think it's so much of a sympathy it's supposed to elicit so much as just another messed up layer. It definitely could, probably should, have been introduced earlier, but I think the impact it would've contributed to would've been just to make whatever happens between them in the final more juicy. Family assassins and multiple people with multiple goals and deals to make to get what they want creates and interesting tapestry for me.

7

(also did I spy a name perhaps that meant A PREVIOUS set of twins?)

1

I look forward to Sun's death! I hope it is satisfying.
I can't decide who I want to take her out.. but i don't want any of our good leads to get blood on their hands.. so what you say makes most sense.. or even Kang (SIH head)..
While watching the ep I thought it would be Hye-soo, she will scheme to take her out.. Team A Lee also has a bone to pick now.. ok well.. too many candidates..lol

So did Hyun Jo ask Sun to kill Hye-soo and she refused? I was a bit confused at that part. He didn't give a name, but Sun knew who it was and refused.

You are right about Hyun Jo - he is dumb. He doesn't really see the big picture. No wonder Hye-Soo was able to slowly push him away.. even secretary/his lover has more smarts than him.

Yeah. I think it was to kill Hye-soo.

I definitely want it to be Hye-soo that drives the finishing touch in the same fashion as Dragon Lady Kwon finished the job this week. But Sun has made too many enemies with people who hold her marks dear to their heart, esp Changwoo and Hye-soo. We'd expect Hye-soo to do the thing, but I'm not putting it past Changwoo. So whoever gets to Sun first.

You're right about Secretary Yoon. She impressed me so much this week. She really has this command on screen. Her own voice of silence is one that commands attention.

If there's one thing that this drama will do is keep you on the edge of your seat!

Has Hye-soo has been working towards being the head of Haesong all along from the time she sent that letter to Woo-shin or was finding out that Hyun Jo ordered the killing of her beloved what sent her off the rails.

Woo-shin remains my favourite twin 🥺. Come on, how could they do that to his hand? He's a writer 😒😭!

How TF did Tae-sung not kill the chairman after shooting and even strangling him? These SIH members have been utterly useless.

I laughed when someone finally thought that there could be a mole among them but then they just all forgot about it and move on to the next agenda.

Excited for the finale! The twins had better stay unscathed

The shooting of the chairman was very I have to get from A to B, how do I get here. Otherwise it doesn't make any sense. They should have just given him a heart attack or something and had TS run away. I rolled my eyes that one.

I'm glad Woo Shin has finally figured it out. Soo Hyun being angry at their father for shooting at Woo Shin, when he was about to beat him up moments before was very funny.

They Seo Hee a bit naive for my liking. Let's do it the right way, when we have tried and it hasn't worked. It was weird for someone so worldly.

Also the joy I felt when Soo Hyun choked Sun, I was like why isn't this done all the time. SIGH, violence against women is wrong. 😒

Hye Soo, I hope she wins it all, mostly because I think it will be the most interesting ending.

I can willing agree with Soo-hee's sudden naivety IRL but not in dramas.
Her version of 'don't descend to their level' projected more of restriction and constriction than voice of caution, especially when the bad guys don't mind crossing beyond the last of the last of the last. It got me eyerolling most of the part. But if it's anything, her naivety will remind them not to over-cross the line but it's still having the eyeroll feeling nonetheless.

Hmmmm interesting.
I need to go rewatch to see if I feel any different about that whole sequence of events upon a second viewing, but for now-
Personally the whole crossing the line conversation about what to do next had me questioning *Soohyun's* decisions more than Seohee's.
Both brothers have become pretty disillusioned with the SIH's methods, especially when it leads to a wanton loss of civilian or tertiary party life, simply to attain their goal. Soohyun was pretty clear about being fed up with the SIH's approach to things in the past couple of episodes, because their approach to him only kept leading to this, and wasn't working.
Now he seems to side with the remainder of them fairly quickly.

If anything, what sets, what I will call our central Trio (Seohee, Soohyun and Woosin), apart from every other party in this show is that they're all unwilling to kill or be a part of killing to reach their end goal. Even Soohyun says so when Taesung drags him out of the room in episode 14. He's NOT okay with killing another human being actually. They're essentially three (mostly) ordinary people up against an ominous foe, a forbidding wall of madness that they've become embroiled in, and they've all chosen to fight against it no matter the odds.

But yeah, Soohyun's decision to stay with the SIH seemed weirder to me, than Seohee not wanting any part of a plan that originally seemed to just be "go out all guns blazing", because of his prior loyalties, even if it were presented that he felt like he had no other choice.
What does everyone else think? I'm curious if anyone else has more thoughts about how that entire scene went down, why, whatfore, and what either sides plan seems to ACTUALLY be to win this fight... (you have 5 guys against all of Team A? And you two are working SOLO right now? WHAT is your plan exactly?*)
Because you see, they all have different end goals... every single player in this has a slightly different end goal... how can any one win satisfactorily ...
(*And this is why I have to wait till next week.)

I think it boils down to Woo-shin. Seeing his brother really broke him and from his statement of how long they have to continue with the nightmare, I could see him deciding to make that choice. In fact, I was expecting it.
We've seen time and time again that the twins aren't even motivated by their personal gain, but for the safety of the other. They get defensive once they feel their twin is threatened. And Soo-hyun has always been extra when it comes to Woo-shin.
I would cross that line too if it was to protect my sibling.
The same with Lee Changwoo. He has been taking beatings for years without a fight, but add a twin to the mix, you get a raging father.
It's why I think he will be the one to take care of Sun or Team Leader Lee. He has to do that much. Please please please let him handle one if not both.

A good addition to the decision making mix.
Thanks! And yeah I can totally see Lee Changwoo killing several people for his sons lol .

8

The twins 🥰
you are so right. They are not the types to express their love or be close but you can tell so much from their actions.
Woo shin getting hurt was a tipping point.
I need more raging father LCW scenes. He he.

6

Soo-hyun's decision to stay would be to remain the one voice of caution to rein in whatever the SIH...no, not the SIH but Choi Taesung has in store for Team A. Lee Changwoo has the same mindset as Taesung and can't be counted upon to tether him. Soo-hee is hell bent on them playing good till the end, but Su-hyeon knows what point of the law they can cross and bend without becoming Team A or Haesong and I believe whatever plans they have going forward, he'll try to make sure it's workable around the law.

So we've three or four (possibly more) reactions to just one part of this one scene- see this is why I need the recaps for this show lmao

@sicarius I think him staying with the SIH could be part of a bigger plan with Woo-shin but I may be over thinking this 😅.
He could simply just be fed up (after what happened to Woo-shin) and now feels sympathy for them after their disbandment 😂

I mean that's the thing, I just feel like it'd be kind of weird for him to feel sympathy towards them to that extent? The takes above seem more plausibly lol.
I would love a greater plan. I feel like their NEEDS to be one given the Twins planning the kidnapping to get LCW out etc but also who knows since so many plans have been dashed before fruition.

5

I felt the same. The brother’s probably have a plan. But also at this point we are kinda in the no-plan-just-go-for-it territory. It’s not like they could have predicted the basement dead bodies. Let’s see.
Is it next week yet :)

Hye Soo, I hope she wins it all, mostly because I think it will be the most interesting ending.

You and me both!

I feel like she is going to take it and tear it apart.. But it also would be nice to see her take over and actually make a decent/responsible company out of Haesong.

Unrelated - I need Ji Sung and Seo Ji Hye in another drama with romance... gosh, those two look so good together!!

That's the beauty of it. Shows that are not romance themed sometimes have a way of giving us a fire couple we'd ship instantly. The Devil's Judge and Life are good examples. And Adamas is proving to be another of such.

6

This would just negate the whole loyal/love Hye Soo has for Min Joo and going above and beyond to avenge his death. It is nice the drama is not giving them the pass for romance or focusing on it. The clear romance set up seems to be between Soo Hyun and Seo Hee

3

These episodes were too intense that I had to pause and process it 😂. Just wanted to say Jisung is a phenomenal actor ! I especially loved that scene where Soo Hyun started yelling at Wooshin and Wooshin pointing the gun at Lee Chang Woo spiralling out his concern.(I expected this reaction from Soo Hyun though) and best is the Soo Hyun and Taesung hug 😂😂 I really needed that laugh.

Heo Sung tae is outstanding in his role! Loved his entire sequence of shooting Kwon. He is the MVP now.

I hope Wooshin doesn't trust Hye Soo, like always I hope he has a contingency plan.

God, this show… I have no words. When was the last time we got a thriller this tightly written, this nerve-wracking, this capable of upping and retaining the tension until the finale? Ji Sung may have done his career best work here (those Woo-shin scenes… just wow), and that’s not to mention everyone else in the cast (yes, even Park Hae-eun. My ambivalence towards Sun the character does not mean I’m blind towards her clear talent. Its good to see her proving the negative press coverage after leaving Alchemy of Souls wrong). Special shout-out to Heo Sung-tae though, who was just something incredible these episodes. Really, we’re witnessing an extraordinary amalgamation of good acting, directing, writing, editing, sound design, and cinematography here. A drama this well-rounded and competent in every aspect of its making should not be as underrated as it is.

Adamas, I love you too much. I’m not ready to let go next week.

I don't get it! Ji Sung's dramas usually do well with ratings. And this is 2 of them! I has everything going for it... I don't understand.
I read somewhere that it was complicated with a lot of withheld info and too much to remember (like, who knows what). I don't really think it was that complicated. It was just right to keep you hooked.

See, I watched both, or well I watched Insider for long enough to say that I have a good handle on both, and Adamas is WAY better imo, than Insider. Insider's twists happened at the expense of both the logic of the narrative and the believability of the characters. They were also executed in such a way that became tiring and ott- constant flashbacks and Ocean 11 esque "gotchas" that eventually none of them became gotchas, and the frequency of them leeched all actual tension out of the story. I also found the plot of Insider to be a lot more all over the place, and far less interesting.
Adamas is far better executed- many of the twists are surprising, but many we also called, but all at least so far (with perhaps the exception of 1) fell natural to the story, have the kind of exciting cathartic release you expect from a show of its ilk. Adamas, at least, and I say this a bit tentatively for now in case I change my mind later lol, and also ending dependant, feels smart enough for its twists- Insider was just twists for the sake of it.

8

Insider was such a MESS in terms of narrative coherence. I dropped it right before the second half because the twists and constant flashbacks became tiring and predictable. I’m honestly not surprised it got low ratings.

Adamas has been nothing BUT streamlined, straightforward, and methodical in its twists and tension. Everything feels natural and like it’s actually part of the overarching planned story instead of being pulled out of the writer’s ass to elicit gasps about how “unpredictable” it is. It’s a delight to watch after sitting through the likes of Insider for so long.

5

I watched entire Insider and if not for the gambling scenes in the initial episode and break-out star Kang Young-Seok who played fan favorite Jang Sun Oh, many would have dropped it after 4 episodes. It was a waste of so much potential plot confict and stellar cast. They kept introducing new villian upon villian for terrible twists that were not even enjoyable.

I can't help but feel this could have fared well if it had aired in the weekend slot. In fact Adamas would singlehandely flush out other thrillers like Big Mouth ,if not for Lee Jong Suk/Yoona's popularity.

4

Darn I haven't watched Insider yet. Was going to binge it slowly, but now Idk. 😣😅

1

Unfortunately, it had the bad luck to start while everyone was all about Extraordinary Attorney Woo. Also, tvN hasn't had much luck with thrillers on Wed-Thurs but keeps scheduling them there anyway.

Gosh it's not just the low ratings that kill me- there's like NO CONTENT for this online almost at all! There are practically no YT MVs for any of the main characters, all the gif sets on tumblr are from like the first few episodes, and none from my favourite scenes or scenes worthy of being gifsetted (of which there are many!?), there's hardly any conversation about it that I can find on tumblr at all, there's a bit more on Twitter, but not really enough to write home about.
I'm like starved, of Adamas content external of dB! hahaha

And it's so well made, why aren't people watching it just for the creepy cinematography and framing! I am gif deprived! lol

I don’t think any Disney+ kdrama has been internationally popular, with their geo blocking they’ve basically tanked any international audience engagement

It’s also no surprise the biggest dramas this year were all on Netflix:
Twenty One Twenty Five
Business Proposal
My Liberation Notes
Extraordinary Attorney Woo
Alchemy of Souls

I’m with you on the Adamas gif deprivation tho! It’s why I’m grateful and very much appreciative of missvictrix’s screenshots!

Oh yeah, this is a Disney+ drama, riiiight. *cue screaming rage and frustration*

I seriously need that site to back the fuck off from dramas because the only thing it’s been doing for international fans is block lucrative audiences from several regions due to nonsensical geolocking and forcing many honest fans to go to the dark side to access content when many would happily prefer to watch it legally. This is only making their own content unpopular in comparison to Netflix or even Viki releases.

5

Jisung's next drama should be NETFLIX production!! hope this happens though (fingers crossed).

2

oH YEAH... I kinda forgot about that because I've never been a legal viewer lmao, so I sometimes forget when things are hampered by the channel or streaming service pffffft. Could very well be a big part of it.

3

Honestly, I probably wouldn't have checked out this show if it weren't for Dramabeans and Beanies mentioning it. The high amount of comments in the recaps also helped, heh.

It's a real shame this drama hasn't gotten the hype it deserves. Like on the level of Forest of Secrets or Sky Castle.

So thanks to all you Beanies (like @missvictrix) who have raved about it and/or are active in the recaps. ♥

I’VE NOTICED THE LACK OF GIF CONTENT!! So glad I’m not the only seeing just how under the radar everything is. Usually with any other drama, even ones without younger/idol actors in the mix, there’d be something, anything. But with Adamas, nada, none. The cinematography and direction for this drama have been so gorgeous (not to mention some of the leads lol), the lack of external content is borderline criminal. We are starving out here.

These last two episodes were soo intense, I have very high expectations for the finale but at this point I know without a doubt that this show will deliver. Amazing acting by everyone. The dragon lady killing her master while Hye-Soo calmly watches sent shivers down my spine.

Not enough can be said about Jisung's acting. It's amazing how the twins are very different people in my mind. I have to remind myself that it's the same actor. It helped that the twins had different plotlines during the first half. I love both the twins but I love Wooshin just a little more.

God BLESS Adamas for FINALLY GIVING ME A CANE KNIFE. YES. YES. Not a cane sword, but better for revenge stabbing at close quarters and doesn't risk potentially compromising the integrity of a cane as an actual cane at the same time.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR KDRAMA TO DO THIS FOR SO LONG. Maybe there have been previous examples but NOT IN THE LAST 7 YEARS. THE UNTAPPED POTENTIAL OF WEAPONS WITH FLAIR OK.
She killed him with a knife encased in the cane she uses to walk, that she uses because she became cripple by serving the Chairman to the point of abuse as a child, and that has a dog head hilt??? Sweet Dramatic IRONY, it tastes so GOOD.
Hye Soo sure knows how to kill someone with Shakespearean symbolic revenge doesn’t she, OOPH. The CLASS.

She’s also terrifying and I have no idea if she’ll end up being a good or dreadful thing for our Twins in the end.

What a week.

This week did clear up several of my questions from last week, which is nice, because I don’t usually get that. (I still have a few I’m keeping tabs on but overall...)
It also gave me the twins doppelgangering up, briefly, as well as a shittone of father-twin angst, and also SoohyunxSeohee angst (which I didn’t ask for but okay 🥺), and also left us in a very… VERY interesting place for the finale week… wherein I’m honestly mostly worried they’re not going to have enough TIME to conclude this well.

They’ve been doing so well with seeming like they (mostly) know what they’re doing and how they’re going to get there so far, but rn I just have lots of questions about where all the pieces on our giant chess board are actually right now, and where they’re going to end up, whilst also fearing GREATLY for the life of both twins and Seohee, and I’m not going to know ANYTHING till next week am I!
(I’m also scared for yet another S2 ending set up. Don’t. Don’t do that show. You haven’t given be reason to believe you will, but then… neither did Poong, and you have so much to deal with and I am c o n c e r n e d.)

They need the confession of Team Leader Lee to absolve their father of the false murder charge, but at the same time, Haesong has apparently abandoned their election campaign (?), Seohee is trying to get Hwang to whistleblow, Chairman Kwon is dead (!), Hyunjo wants Lee Changwoo and his wife dead (and who else?) and cut a deal with Sun to help, Hye Jin wants Hyunjo dead and the SIH gone (??), and to take over Haesong (?) and cut a deal with Team A to do so, Team Leader A wants Soohyun/Woosin dead and presumably cut a deal with Hye Jin to do so (even though SH didn’t know about the drug that killed his brother and the real person who ordered that is Kang), Sun wants her sister dead and cut a deal with Hyunjo to get SOMETHING (what. why did she look at her sister like THAT), Soohyun wants to take down Team A and Haesong once and for all to stop the people around him dying, Woosin wants to clear his father’s name and obtain a retrial (?) and cut a deal with Hye Jin...

(!) to get to Teal Leader A to do so, Soohyun and the left over SIH found a bunch of barrels with dead people inside them (!), there’s something going on with Seohee and the doctor and Hye Jin’s Father’s hospital, and the real Adamas is in the action figure inside Soohyun’s flat and Woosin is on his way there, literally right now… Also Lee Changwoo is not above killing everyone to save his sons, probably. And there might be a mole in the SIH.
Y’all?????

Anyway, I can’t help but think that Soohyun should’ve just knocked Sun out and thrown her in the truck right there in front of the prison, and then put her somewhere where she can’t cause trouble to anyone next week though… Or that Taesung has terrible aim. But then I wouldn’t have got my sweet ironic cane knife death, so I’ll let the latter slide.
.
.
.

(POST SCRIPT:
*a look* ”Prosecutor Song.” *another look* “Take care of yourself.” *another look again* “I’ll see you again.” and
“What’s your relationship with his brother then? …” *pause* *music* *angsty framing* “we just… make each other worry” and *Soohyun holding a Woosin on the verge of collapse and then getting mad at him two hours later* and *Woosin shaking from pain because of his hand* = *sic sobbing internally in the corner* I’m gonna be so pissed if one of these three die btw, and yet I keep expecting it ahhhh.)

Can't believe that this drama still managed to be this intense and suspenseful. The episodes kept me engaged, but the cliffhanger of barrels was bizarre. Over the top? I didn't know what I wanted to see in that secret basement. It is on par with the rest of the other dramatic scenes though. Just not my favorite reveal.

Still interesting to see different characters flip flopping and see who uses who. Team Leader Lee & Hye Soo... Hmm. With typical kdramas, I'm like she can't be serious about getting rid of SIH. But with this drama, there's so many shady people! Including her.

I kept thinking Tae Sung HAD to be dreaming when he went and shot Chairman Kwon so it was wild to see the scene play out in reality. It's weird that he didn't get the kill with all the time and bullets he had. Or even the choking part. On the other hand, Lady Dragon Kwon being the one to end him was some funny justice.

Glad Tae Sung's character is breaking out of his undercover role and making major moves. He has been in the background/sidelines for a while now. He is just as mysterious as Hye Soo. I can't tell how far they will go to achieve their goals.

I’m a bit late to the party but Holy Moly were these episodes intense/hard to watch! Woo-shin 😭😭😭

I don’t think they’ll kill Seo-hee, they’ve tortured her enough, poor thing lost her family then gets kidnapped, abused and forced to wear a bomb, it’ll be too much if they kill her off now.

And I gotta give it to Seo-hee, she remained true to her convictions through and through and never wavered. I personally would’ve been on a revenge spree and annihilated Team A by any means necessary but hey different strokes for different folks. Also Seo-hee is probably the only saving grace for humanity at this point.

Soo-hyun’s protectiveness and loyalty to his father is super cute! I love how aggressive he gets with our Adamas thief, always asserting that Lee Chang-woo is just his bio dad not his REAL dad!!! Haha

Lady Kwon!

She.Stabbed.Him!

STABBED HIM!

IN THE HEART!

HUZZAH!

I can never tell with Hye-soo
I don’t know where her loyalties lie
Will she be the new villain to take on the mantle or will she destroy Haesong?

I’m still in denial that one of twins will die, I would honestly prefer Lee Chang-woo to be the sacrifice since he was pivotal in starting this whole mess

I gave it a thought too... What exactly should they do now?
Punishing Team Leader Lee is one thing but finding Adamas is of no use cuz murder weapon was that fake Adamas, right?
So, they want it for the deal with Hey soo?

1

Now, if I think about it ... I wish Chairman Kang to be alive. He should've died after witnessing the downfall of Haesong!!

3

Chairman Kwon*

0

I kept thinking something similar- he can't face retribution for all his actions by dying now. On the other hand, the way he did die was so morbidly poetic in its own right, ... so... yeah idk. I might just reserve all judgement to see what they do next week. I hope I don't end up hating the show because of it, but you never know! lmao
(also din ding @ladynightshade and @missvictrix 100th comment!

4

Proving Lee Chang Woo’s innocence in the murder but proving his guilt on other crimes ( murders as part of haesong) and bringing down Haesong/Hyun Jo would be a clean wrap up for me. Lee
Chang woo will end up in jail again though :) probably along with Lee. Which seems fair to me. Like Kim SH said, she worked so hard to prove that a criminal was innocent 😇

Until the parallel yet, sequential narration scenes between Lee ChangWoo/Soo Hyun, Chairman Kwon/Team Leader Lee, Seo Hee/Investigation officer, I really did not realize the extent to which the directing and cinematography has been astounding in this drama. Incredible!

This drama started out with people wanting to ride the same boat, but suddenly it maximizes the variance of the end goal by having different sets of people forming an alliance, but still following their own hidden agenda. I just love it.

The tension of rescuing Woo Shin, the heated argument in the SIH's building between the different parties to the suspenseful search of Team A's base all played out beautifully like a cascading waterfall.

Also, how talented should Ji Sung ❤ be that people are all preferring Woo Shin over Soo Hyun even though both characters are being played by the same actor.

I hope this drama ends on a satisfying note, even if it can't end on a high note after the "bang-bang" episodes of 13 & 14.

And shoutout to Hye Soo making all power moves and looking freaking fantastic. Bring on her scenes against Sun!
