[Drama Chat] The OST you’re still listening to

It’s almost impossible to separate dramas from their OSTs, and they’re arguably one of the quickest ways to get pulled back into the world of the drama long after it’s over.

Even for me — and I’m one of those rare drama watchers that pays minimal attention to an OST — I’ll hear a song I didn’t even know I knew, and just like that I’m back in the emotions of the drama.

What’s the OST you’re still listening to? What makes it special to you?

Let the chatting begin!

I confess I'm not much of a music person. I've always been more of a book/written word type of person, so I don't often clock the significance of music in drama/movie. But even I am not immune. Some songs catch you, and refuse to let you go.

I still listen to THE PRINCESS' MAN and MASTER'S SUN OSTs regularly. They were *perfect* for their dramas.

Over in Bollywood, I'm not even Indian nor do I speak Hindi, but even after all these years,
I can pretty much STILL sing every song from
Kabhi Kushie Kabhi Gham
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

I can also still sing some songs from
Veer Zaara
Kal Ho Naa Ho
KANK (silly movie, but that OST was too notch)

As you can tell, I am a Karan Johar girl

For CDramas I still listen to the opening theme of BBJX, as well as THREE INCHES OF HEAVEN from the same drama - perfect sad love songs.

I don't remember Veer Zaara's songs but I love the ones in Kabhi Kushie Kabhi Gham, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kal Ho Naa Ho.

Vast subject !

It's one of the thing I really like in KDrama, the fact they have their own OST. I still listen old songs from KDrama, even if I didn't like the drama itself. It also allows me to discover artists.

I can't make a list... There are way too many songs 😅

Sometimes, you know an idol in his/her group but ignor how good is his/her voice because the group songs don't let them shine.

Or some artists are not famous and are invited on TV shows like Sondia, but she has great OSTs.

Usually one or two songs from most dramas end up in my Playlist. Since everyone will list all the mainstream ones, I'll list my favorite underrated ones,
Lucid dream - While you were sleeping
Auditory Hallucinations - Criminal minds
Feel you - Flower of evil
Done for me - Hotel del Luna
I'll leave you - Red sleeve cuff
O.V.E.R - cheat on me if you can
Hyena (By Yeo Un) - Hyena

1. Wind Song by Sohyang in Go Back Couple - This was played in almost all the episodes and emotionally grating scenes, constantly hearing the OST I just had to check it out.
2. My Love By My Side by Kim Myung-shik in Hospital Playlist 1 or Oh! My Ladylord - Thinking about where I first heard this song, I can't remember the scene. But I remember searching through the episodes I had watch trying to Shazam the song out. Stamped impression.
3. George Winston's Canon in Hospital Playlist - I've always loved classics of old times. And the instrumentals is just...I can't name it. So I dug up the internet. It anyone knows where I can find the actual canon that was played when the woman delivered her stillborn baby in S01E04 I'd appreciate the link. I haven't found that particular score on the internet.

@beantown: Thank you so much for introducing me to this sublime gem. I also read a rough translation of the original Chinese poem and it is beautiful. I can only imagine how glorious what the original poem must be:

‘The piece's name, Bi Yik Yeon Li, is derived from the words Bi Yik Jo (as mentioned in the description) and Yeon Li Ji.

Bi Yik Jo is a legendary creature that takes the form of a bird, but it only has one eye and one wing. To survive, it needs its soulmate, which has corresponding eye and wing.

Yeon Li Ji is referred to trees that do not share the same roots, but end up intertwined with each other, thus making them look as if they are one tree.

These two words became famous with a poem written by a Chinese poet, Bai Ju Yi from Tang dynasty.

Here's a rough translation of the poem;

비익련리

“These two words became famous with a poem written by a Chinese poet, Bai Ju Yi from Tang dynasty.

Here's a rough translation of the poem;

Song of Everlasting Regret - Bai Ju Yi

On the seventh day of the seventh month in the eternal hall,

In the middle of the night with no one around, a vow was made.

On heaven, we wish to be Bi Yik

On earth, we wish to be Yeon Li

Even the high heavens and the earth eventually have their end,

Yet this regret of mine will be everlasting without an end”

Ooohhhh what a great topic! Yeah OST is one of the best thing about K-dramas. I personally think great OST help make some dramas timeless. The songs I still keep on loop are Goong’s Perhaps Love, Sungkyunkwan Scandal’s Found You, and Scent of a Woman’s You’re So Beautiful. My recent favorites vary depending on what dramas are playing right now, but they just never stuck like the old ones. Even Love, Maybe grew a bit old after Business Proposal ends.

Most songs in my playlist are Korean Osts that too mainly instrumentals. I like them more than songs and I know I have a taste in music not many will agree with. The instrumentals that never leave are Falling for Innocence, Come and Hug Me and My Ajusshi but there are always one or two gems in each show. When it comes to songs, Jealousy Incarnate and Cheese in the Trap's ost is my forever favorite. But again with every show there comes one, two, or more great songs. My recent favorite is Nevertheless's and 2521's Ost. I wish there was more recognition for drama music producers and the songs and instrumentals they produce. These are usually too good to be ignored but I guess the local landscape is more catered towards pop music. Only if a drama hits it big, the ost ranks on their charts.

OST is a big part of my drama experience. Lots of memorable songs which can bring back the drama years after watching it.
There is one composer I particularly like and want to introduce to beanies. Her name is Nam Hye Seung.
Her most recent work is Our Beloved Summer ost. She is also behind the ost of Goblin, Mr Sunshine, Crash Landing on You, Chicago Typewriter, Bubblegum, Its okay to not be okay, and many many more.
Not a single song, but the whole album is an art. There is a theme for each character in dramas like Mr Sunshine.

Wow, this question is a little hard to answer. I have two(three) playlists with my favorite kdrama ost's. They are more than 20h long.

Sometimes I like the whole album like with Heart to Heart, My Ahjussi, Yu Mi, Queen of Mistery, BOF, Boyfriend, WTDevilCYName, etc.

Other times is just 55% like Melo, BTIMFirst Life, Children of Nobody, Itaewon, HBMama, Perfume, Smile You, etc.

Or 20-35%: Tomorrow with you, Miracle we met, Man to Man, Hammurabi, Be My Dream Family, etc.

And sometimes is just one damn song totally stuck in my head: Seonbae Lipstick, You're My Dreams, Cinderella, SFDragons, Coffee Prince, School 2015, Good Doctor, Mad FEOT, Once Again, Start Up, Love Rain, etc.

I watched like 3 episodes of Seonbae and I then I dropped it, but that song (Lean On Me) feels like the song of my favorite drama or something. I don't remember Love Rain at all but I can sing the title song with no problem.

Sometimes I only remember I watched a show when I listen the OST (yeah, I'm talking to you When Time Stops).

So yeah, hard question...

Just Between Lovers: 'Where We' by Ryu Ji Hyun and Kim Kyung Hee. This is absolutely my favorite OST - haunting, evocative, both sad and hopeful, perfect for this drama. 'Truelove' (aka 'Say What You Need') by Junho is also lovely.
BTLIOF: 'This Life' by Moon Sung Nam, 'Marriage' by MoonMoon, and 'Shelter' by Song Hee Jin.
CLOY: 'Photo of My Mind' by Song Ga In and its variant 'Hill of Yearning' by April 2nd, and 'All My Days' by Sejeong. Actually, anything from CLOY.
Healer: 'When You Hold Me Tight' by Yael Meyer. Conversely, I got so tired of the main theme ('Eternally Snores', was it?) by about the 10th repetition, so somewhere in ep. 3.

I’ll echo @flatwhite ’s love for composer Nam Hye Seung. I have an OST playlist and I am instantly drawn in whenever one of her songs pops up, regardless of whether I've seen that drama.

Many years later, and just listening to strains of Ailee's Goodbye my Love from Fated to Love You brings me back to all the emotions I felt when the female lead had the accident and lost her baby.

I'm a HUGE fan of soundtracks: Korean, Chinese, Hindi, Spanish, English. One of the reasons I like soundtracks is because I tend to attach a particular scene to every OST I listen to. So when they play, I just remember that scene and feel all the emotions again.

Some of my favourite K-drama OSTs are from: Healer, School 2015, Goblin, It's Okay to not be Okay, Hotel Del Luna, Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, Dali and Cocky Prince, Uncontrollably Fond, The Producers, A Piece of Your Mind and my guilty pleasure, Boys over Flowers.

Special shout out to those background music from sageuks. God! I love them so much.

I don't listen often to songs nowadays as I currently prefer listening to podcasts (and when we travel the kids take over our car player 😁), but here is at least my history of kdramas OST listening:

I think the first OST I put on my playlist and listened to it for quite some time was from You Are Beautiful.
I also had a period with Bad Guy (it was such a shame the drama turned crazy towards the end) and City Hunter (I especially liked Suddenly and the classical music instrumentals). And of course I can't forget to mention the soundtrack from Shut Up Flower Boy Band. Then a song here and there like Angel's Mission Pray or Dinner Mate Yummy Yummy (or the titular song Dinner Mate by OVAN).

Though the song which stayed with me the longest and repeatedly comes back is Master's Sun Touch Love. There is just something that touches also me...

(And yes, time to time I put on that jazzy intro from On the Verge of Insanity , a reliable good mood maker 🙂 )

--The award for 'This OST made me cry the most, and I still love it but can't listen to it without crying' goes to Crash Landing on You
--The OST that grabbed me by the throat when I'd first started watching kdramas and hasn't released me since: You Who Came from the Stars
--Speaking of Jun Ji-Hyun, I also love Legend of the Blue Sea's Soundtrack! The instrumentals are dreamy and fairytale-esque
--Honorable mentions go to Run On and Weightlifting Fairy KBJ!! Both amazing soundtracks that make me happy
--Hotel del Luna made me fall in love with IU... and with its soundtrack! Every song is a sword through the heart, but it hurts so good
--My recent favorites include Happiness (the now iconic instrumental PORTRAIT??? if you get it, you get it; if you don't, you don't.) and Hometown Cha-cha-cha (personal favorites include Here Always, The Image of You Remains in my Memory, and Wish)

The music and specific OST for each drama is part of the experience for me. The music really plays an important part in my evaluation of a drama.
I have a long playlist of kdrama music, despite having found dramaland only 15 months ago. It has become my primary music list... so it's hard to say "what i'm still listening to.."
Healer feels nostalgic because it's my first drama.
Paradise from My Holo love is one of the oldest songs and still one of the most frequently listened.
Last One from The Master's Sun.
Auditory Hallucination from Kill me Heal me.
All of K2.
The songs from DOST and Another Miss Oh when I need peeps.
The background music from The devil judge and Flower of evil.
Lullabies that get me to sleep: Sweet nights from Iteawon class, The nights from The devil judge, I'm always by your side from Vincenzo, When love passes by from Melting me solftly (the only good thing from this drama).

My current OST crush is all of the cdrama Killer and Healer.

I love music, and there are so many songs I've fell in love with over the years. But there is one song that really sparked my interest in Korean music and that's Nam Jin's With You, featured in Can You Hear My Heart. The song itself is never played during the show but the FL's father sings it a lot and I just fell in love with it.

It was very hard to find. I didn't know the title, I didn't know hangul but fortunately managed to apply my knowledge of article browsing to musical lyrics. As a bonus, I also discovered kpop as one of the more famous clips on youtube featuring this song is a cover by EXO on Immortal Songs. It's to die for, both the music and the super corny performance.

An honorary mention to Kim Gun Mo's Wrongful Meeting from Jealousy Incarnate as this introduced me to Fantastic Duo and there are so many artists and delightful songs in this show.

Now, I mostly skipped the OST scenes as I speed through the episodes. Which why I am not attached to any of the recent songs even if I watch the drama.

Without further ado though I am sure I forget quite a few songs:
1) City Hall - Anxious Love by Horan
2) All the OSTs from Oh Hae Young Again
3) My GF is a Gumiho - Fox Rain by Lee Sun Hee
4) Dream High - Someday by IU
5) Reply 1994 - To You by Sung Shi Kyung
6) Secret Garden - That Girl by Baek Ji Young / That Man by Hyun Bin
7) Shining Inheritance - Love is Punishment by K.Will

I learned the whole lyrics for the song That Woman/That Man in Secret garden, while watching that drama a decade ago. I still listen to the OST some times.

There are only a couple of OSTs that I listen to even occasionally. My favorite is "Stop the Love Now", the OST to my favorite Kdrama romcom MARRIAGE NOT DATING (now in a tie with BUSINESS PROPOSAL). It would be hard to find a song better fitted to its drama.

I do not listen much to KPop songs. But! I listen to KDrama OSTs a lot, even if I disliked the drama. I even have a 14-hour playlist on Spotify which is my go-to playlist when studying or just chilling. I sometimes play little games where I guess which drama the OST is from~

Any OST penned by Ms. Nam Hye-seung is a guaranteed masterpiece: Goblin, OBS, IOTNBO, and A Piece of Your Mind, to name a few.

I have been listening to Our Beloved Summer OST every now and then. I would listen to all the songs in the soundtrack atleast once every now and then. There was a few weeks when the drama ended that I listened to the songs almost everyday.
I find the songs help me focus and calm me down before I start the tasks i need to do.
It also transports me to scenes in the drama I loved and experience the highs/lows all over again.

Back in the day I would download the OST's to all of my favorite dramas. My playlist was a combination of my favorite songs from these OST's and BigBang, with a smattering of select songs from other Kpop groups. During the years I was away from dramaland, I forgot all about them. Then when I started rewatching this year...oh man, the feels! Secret Garden, Healer, Faith...it amazed me how I was affected by the music.

I'm much more selective with my playlist these days, but I do have the Healer OST and the Mars OST back on my playlist. I could listen to Ling's Theme all day.

Unpopular opinion follows.

I have rarely listened to OTP after the series was ended with just one exception where I searched for the song and played it on the loop later. It was from School Nurse Files , "School Nurse Ahn Eunyeong (ogeongyosa an-eun-yeong)".

I rarely liked K-Drama OTP. Liked some songs from J-Drama though.

So many! Soooooo many! 😅😅😅😅😅
- Mr sunshine (it breaks my heart every time, but I can't help it)
- Tantara and lost child from Entertainers
-I love you with all my heart, from I am not a robot.
-All the OST from Hotel de Luna, even though I didn't watch the drama, simply because it's beautiful.
-All the songs from My Ajusshi. Come on, how wouldn't I? (It's the drama number 1 in my list).
-Couple of songs from Its ok not to be ok.
-One song from WLFKBJ
-One song from kill me Heal me
-Another one from "W", even when I didn't watch the drama either ...
-Two or three from Chicago Typewriter.
-The most sad one from "Mother"
-A couple from Just between lovers.

And many more.
I actually don't listen to regular music from Korean bands or signers... I only listen music originally composed to be an ost. Why? Because they are beautiful and being introduced to me as an ost... then it's easier for me to want to listen to it again and again....😊😇😅

Ok, i must confess. had the CDs of Metoer Garden — the one with Jerry Yan and company. I was into Taiwanese drama during that period until I was eventually drawn to Goong's OST.

I get to love a song from a drama now and then but to point full OSTs, I can mention the likes of Monstar [although Kang Ha-neul never actually sang, but it has B2st's Yong Jun-hyung...], Dream High [with Suzy, IU, Kim So-hyoon and 2PM].

As of late, I have in my playlist the opening and closing credit songs of the Chinese series "A Little Called First Love" [a remake of the Mario Maurer Thai movie "A Thing Called Love"] and the BL Series "Semantic Error".

Love the jazzy, laid back feel of the Chinese songs and the edginess of the Korean ones.

So many I love but Ailee and Davichi are my faves. I also love this song called Every day, Every moment by Paul Kim. Such a great song from should we kiss first even though I was never able to finish the drama.
