Premiere Watch: Shooting Stars, Showtime Begins

You might have thought the weekend schedule was already full of enough shows vying for attention, but this weekend we have two more added to the fray. Both dramas seem a bit more light than some of the more serious fare we have going on in this drama cycle, so it’ll be interesting to see how these new shows disrupt things.

Shooting Stars

Time slot: Friday-Saturday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Comedy, drama, romance
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Not only is this drama’s setup something I’ve been wanting for a long time (celeb falls for the girl-behind-the-scenes that’s assigned to him), but I have a hunch the casting will be great. Lee Sung-kyung is always fun, and here she plays a PR person who’s always got a mess to clean up thanks to the high-drama celeb played by Kim Young-dae. Kim shot to fame after Penthouse, and though it seems fast for a leading role, I don’t think this is a mistake — the character seems perfect for a newbie actor who can bring some swagger, hilarity, and hyperbole to the role. In short, I can’t wait to see this one.

Showtime Begins!

Time slot: Saturday-Sunday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Comedy, fantasy, mystery, romance
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Though the spotlight is surely on Park Hae-jin and his next drama choice, it’s Jin Ki-joo I’m most excited for. She stole my heart in Come Here and Hug Me — and then in The Secret Life of My Secretary — so I’m looking forward to seeing her here. Magicians seem to be the next big theme for dramas, because not long after Showtime Begins! premieres, we have The Sound of Magic too. It will not only make for an interesting comparison, but also makes me wonder… how many more magicians will we see before the year is out? It could be like the drama year of multiple personalities all over again!

My weekend is already a mess and it’s about to get even messier. So my message to broadcasters: weekdays exist. Many people can and do watch dramas on weekdays. Hell, just recently, Business Proposal did great number on freaking Monday-Tuesday. Why shove everything into one time?

But yeah, exact same reasons why I’m looking forward to both dramas. Fun premise + casting for the former, and Jin Ki-joo and the writer of Mystic Pop-up Bar for the latter.

The writer of Mystic is a big selling point for Showtime. Also, it's Sat-Sun while Shooting Stars is Fri-Sat, and Fri is my least favorite night for kdramas because I keep staying up late to watch them and then get up early Sat to comment in What We're Watching.

Not to put any pressure on you, but I look forward to those comments every Saturday and would be awfully disappointed if you overslept and didn't get them in.

I’ve missed many a What We’re Watching segments for the same reason. That, and the I usually have a ton of work on Friday. So it’s difficult to watch dramas on Friday and then not oversleep on a day I really should be able to oversleep. Oh well, that’s just life as a drama watcher.

With all these dramas airing on weekends, I'm bound to drop 1 or 2. But bring on the rom-com and fantasy in this weekend mix of slice-of-life-way-too-close-in-hitting-my-kokoro

Getting the right mix and the right timing is difficult even when you spread them out over the week, but you are right it might be good to get a rom-com going!

At the end of each day this week, I had to ask myself whether I wanted to worry about seeing myself in the story of the middle aged man who had vested his ego and his life savings in his child and was debating whether to behave despicably, or whether I wanted to identify with the woman who drove people away by being emotionally needy and talking about herself in monologues that went off in tangents; or whether I wanted to watch either of two shows with grim reapers in them in the week of my near retirement birthday.

Yeap. Love All Play is that light that gets you out of these monologues and it can’t hurt to have more.

Thank you! Actually there are still 7 months, 28 days, and 11 hours, and 10 minutes before my retirement, not that I'm counting or anything. Its just this birthday engendered a lot of reflection because its in my last year of work and the k-drama grim reapers got to me a little bit--even though they are benevolent grim reapers that are so good looking I could admire them when I met them.
By the way, I did not want to suggest that I actually identified with Han-su in Our Blues. I would never compromise my marriage for money or anything or anybody else, In retrospect, though, it might not have been the smartest thing to sell our house and send my wife and daughter on a 7 year tour of the country so she could advance her fencing career and achieve prominence in the national media. Live and learn!

Ah, ooops! I should have said, 🎉Happy Birthday!🎉 and may your 🤺’s successes in that notoriously profitable sport bring you an even better house and cushion that retirement 😉

Thanks @bbstl. This made me laugh at loud.

If I watch both of these on the day of telecast, I'll be watching 6 shows on Saturdays - Again My Life, Tomorrow, Shooting Stars, Showtime Begins, Our Blues and My Liberation Notes 😵🥴.

I’m looking forward To both especially shooting star. As for the other one- I love Park Hae-jin but his drama picks are always off for me. Here’s hoping this one clicks

I'm looking forward to this. My one concern is the trailer wasn't particularly good. But a trailer does not a series make. If you're looking for it on Viki I believe you may have to search for 'sh**ting stars' with asterisks, which I expect to confuse people searching for the series for years to come.

I feel like I’m watching everything over the weekend already, and they’re adding 2 shows I really want to check out on top of that…It’s a good problem to have for sure, but I’m excited for both!

I do not care that I already have two weekend dramas and few varieties. I will find time for this two new shows. I have been anticipating these since I saw the cast and trailers.
Both looks so much fun!

Will either be streamed on Viki or Netflix? If not I won't have to scramble to watch them with all the other weekend ones.

So Viki is having a problem getting along with Roku in my region of N. America. I would simply not be able to get to the main page. Hubby investigated on Twitter where he read aloud Roku's apology about not being able to fix the problem quickly. Also learned about a work-around:
After clicking on Viki, immediately hit the left arrow to gain access to watch list or continue watching. Hit the down arrow (we had to keep it depressed) and viola, you're in.
Actually, I thought it was a secret Netflix plan to pump up sagging profit numbers, or a gift to help me manage watching all these new shows!
Hwaiting.

We will watch the first episode of SHOOTING STARS today. We finally got to see the first episode of SHOWTIME BEGINS! and it was good.

SHOOTING STARS: Episode 1 was good, episode 2 was even better. Now, unfortunately, I have to be patient until next weekend, which will be hard for me.

On the other hand I will not continue watching SHOWTIME BEGINS!" , the two episodes could not convince me.
