[Drama Chat] Which drama is your happy place?

I definitely have more than one drama I would label my happy place, and each for a different reason, but the one that keeps jumping up and down shouting, “Pick me! Pick me!” is Eun-joo’s Room.

This little gem of a drama is not only hard to find (and harder to find subbed), but it’s a sort of hodgepodge of cute K-drama and DIY tutorial. Maybe that’s why it always stays at the top of my list. It’s far from remarkable or ground-breaking, but it’s very comforting. (I reviewed it a while ago here if you want to read more.)

Sweet and moving dramas, fun though they are, often leave an empty hey-that-ain’t-real-life feeling behind, but Eun-joo’s Room didn’t do that for me. Rather than make you dig through your emotions too deeply or ask questions that will keep you up at night, this drama offers the ultimate catharsis because it gives you something to take away (in addition to the cute story). It makes you want to do something.

Drawing from the growth of the heroine during the show, we also want to paint our wall, make a lampshade, or just invest our time and energy into creating something. So for me, this drama is a wonderful recipe of cute romance + ode to the joy of nesting + inspiration to make and do something real.

And now, before I chew your ear off even more…

Which drama is your happy place?

Let the chatting begin!

I enjoyed watching Into the Ring/Memorials and that was served this Kdrama as my happy place. I cannot stop laughing at actor Park Sung-geun (and of course our leads Nana and Park Sung-hoon) and there were so many political antics. Also, I kept rewatching this fun Kdrama over and over again.

This is so interesting to me! I would not have guessed that a drama about politics could be someone's happy place. (I have fairly strong opinions about politics and they're not always popular ones, so it's generally a source of more stress than healing for me).

Side note, I have only ever heard good things about this drama :)

Honestly how can you watch this and not fall in love with our small town crooked accountant from Gunsan and his sociopathic finance executive rival turned ally. The entire supporting cast is fantastic too.

Im willing to argue that this is Namgoong Min's best performance too

I also came to say Chief Kim!

As much as I love romance, romance comes with so many emotional ups and downs and then when friends and families and love rivals stick their oars in, it's just too much.

Chief Kim is just so much fun and the jokes per minute is high. When you watch it again, you catch jokes and little bits of humor you missed the first time. And the bad guys never win for too long.

YAS. I love Chief Kim! Haha I didn't think of that one because it feels like a more grown up comedy to me than my happy place would allow (it's the company politics angle, I know). But it's definitely high up there on the list for me.

PS what is the country he wants to go to? Finland? Sweden? Norway? At any rate, my husband and I just finished watching a nature series about Norway and the Nordic scandanavian areas... Now we want to go live there, too. It's GORGEOUS.

Want to know something? First time I rewatched I didn’t found the last two episodes so bad and unfitting as I found them when I was live watching the drama. I was really surprised that I liked them. I guess that when you live watch you are so immerse in the drama every little (ok, in this case big) thing that happens disappoints you, but when I rewatched I never got that feeling of emptiness I had when actually watched it for the first time.

Wait a second. If nobody minds maybe getting a spoiler here, would someone mind telling me what happens at the end? It's been a long time since I watched it, and I remember getting swept up by a crime drama so I don't know that I ever finished it...

0

@cozybooks, they went for the last hour separation trope. Drama still had a happy ending - and it's a beautiful drama, if anybody hasn't watched and is non the fence about watching it, I totally recommend it! -, but taking into account poor Eunseob's abandonment trauma, it felt particularly harsh 😭

2

I have found this with a couple of other dramas, too. Not having to wait in between and not spending time dissecting every little thing can really help put things into a better perspective.

I loved the music to this one because it was such a perfect reflection of the mood especially the soundtrack to the group gathering to go to the book club and when the town got together for events.

The second couple love chase of the man who went to the top University but came home and was still in love with his first love and was always trying to act like he wasn’t bothered by her was really sweet.

I'm risking myself here of being bashed by some beanies for saying that one of my happiest places of drama is Monthly Magazine Home haha..I truly love it, it's my happy place, together with the previous drama of the team (Drinking Solo).
and I have figured out that my happiest place of drama mostly comes from food-centric story:
1. Let's Eat S1 (the OG of my happy place in drama, everytime I need some comfort this drama never fails to provide: yummiest food, most hillarious noraebang scene so lol, cute romance, so comforting to watch to bits)
2. Dae Jang Geum is Watching, looovee this to bits to, and I love the leads here, Yuri is both hillariously funny and endearing here)
3. Drinking Solo, Monthly Magazine Home, and yes Eunjo's Room, such happy places for me!

thanks for these comforts, kdramaland! love you!

Reading the theme, three dramas came in my mind. They are Racket Boys, Yumi's Cells, and Reply 1997.

Racket Boys is definitely the comfort drama I'm looking for right now. I loved every character especially the kids. Everytime I rewatch this, I feel like I'm in my teenager years once again that is just simply fun and lovely.

Yumi's Cells is another one which is much more an adult version of my comfort place which is quite near to my real life age. I just love how can I relate with Yumi and her cells. The cells are just so adorable to watch.

Reply 1997 is such a classic favorite of mine. I just recently rewatched this for the nth time and the magic is still there. The way this depicts my youth so much with the touch of reality of being a fangirl, it's definitely my pick for my ultimate happy place.

Mr. Queen - I like the early episodes where Jang Bong-hwan is trying to adjust to life in the palace. Did Shin Hye-sun win any awards for her work in this drama? She should have.

Honorable mentions to:

- Oh Hae Young again: I have learned such an important lesson with this one about time and what we make of it, it is definitely one of my happy place!

"Whatever the genre, I love dramas with civilized, mature, upright, kind-hearted characters, like Confession."

Exactly what I think.

"Bizarre, isn't it, that a crime and law drama is one's happy place"

There are some great examples of mature adults working well together in crime and law shows. Two Cops is one. The story isn't particularly great, but apart from the acting which is spectacular, I rewatch it for the people working at the police station. Dr. John is also another show with mature characters living their lives and being good at their jobs.

Let me concur @claire2009, Healer’s. CONFESSION (2019) was a terrific drama. Junho, Yoo Jae-myung (always a plus when he plays a good guy) and the rest of the cast were wonderful. For those interested CONFESSION is available subbed at OnDemandKorea.

With WOK OF LOVE and THE RED SLEEVE I have seen 3 of Junho’s dramas and if I can say in all three he plays a somewhat similar character what I call: a guy wrapped uptight. He does it great but I am waiting for a drama or comedy where he just totally breaks out and goes 180 against the type of guy he has been playing. Maybe my answer is in CHIEF KIM. Another reason to get to it.

Mine is Splish Splash Love. It's just an easy watch, 2 episodes, you can do it in an evening when you don't want to watch anything, but kind of just want to unwind. It's adorable. And when I need a Doojoon fix. I think the ending was what made it for me though.

I love Splish Splash Love! It feels like a perfect starter drama, to get people hooked (maybe gateway drama, but I don't want to scare them off^^)

Thirty But Seventeen has been my happy place for a long time, until Hospital Playlist came along. They're both my happy place now, along with Business Proposal. These three never fails to make me smile and laugh no matter how down I am.

Is it weird that right now my happy place in terms of drama is F4 Thailand . version of BoF?? I mean, I mostly watch K-dramas (in fact my very first one was Korean version of BoF back in 2009), but I have also watched (and liked) some Japanese (mostly Takeru Sato's) and the Thai started a long ago with one about vampires (also around 2009) but that was it. And now I am back (since F4 Thai appeared on my screen....and I suddenly discovered Bright, Win, Nani and Dew....but also Prim and Tontawan!!!....and the classic evil "Gu Jun Pyo" mom....love to hate her...!!) ---- anyway sorry for the "detour". I can think of more happy places of course... it's just F4 Thai has been my guilty pleasure the last 15 weeks, and now we0re approaching the FINALE...

Also, probably the right answer should be the ones listed on muy profile here on dramabeans!!! they're here for a reason!! :) but most recent, VINCENZO (the whole thing, not just SJK or TY, or the great discovery Kwak Dong Yeon!!.....and that awesome OST for a viola player like me!!!) and DOOM AT YOUR SERVICE (almost anything with Seo In Guk I guess would do the trick haha) --- also sageuks like MY COUNTRY or GU FAMILY BOOK, to MOON LOVERS (still need a 2nd season!) --- and MYSTIC POP UB BAR or the UNCANNY COUNTERS (yeah I do like fantasy related). ps extra: a good story like MAD DOG and a sort of remake of a classic european like THE GREAT SEDUCER (yeah.... Woo Do Hwan) ;) and the list could go on....I guess.

I'm assuming the qualifications to be a "happy place" drama are that 1. It has to make you happy
2. You think of it when you want to cheer up
3. The drama itself has a cute and fluffy vibe
4. I've seen it more than once (if it's really my happy place, I'll want to visit often)

This makes that a bit difficult for me. I LOVE cop shows. Give me a serial killer and I'm happy. But I can't say those would be my happy place dramas... I don't watch people murder each other and play psychological games when I want to cheer up. And I can't say they make me feel all fuzzy inside... and the vibe isn't really what I feel like a "happy place drama" is. So. What is my happy place drama then?

I decided on Come and Hug Me. Not only is that the first drama I thought of, but it also felt like a good marriage of my primary taste in dramas (the scary serial killers) and the fuzzy vibes. I could talk for ages about how much I love Namu, the ML. He's just so steadfast and single minded in his love for the FL. Also, I've seen it more than once--I tend to watch it when I feel down but want something that will still keep my interest. If that's not the perfect match, I don't know what is.

Honorable Mentions: Entertainer, Liar and His Lover, When the Camillia Blooms

Episodes 15 and 16 of "Do You Like Brahms?" I love the way the angst is so painful, which makes the moment the two come together so sweet and gratifying. My heart aches, and then it explodes in happiness. I haven't re-watched this drama from the beginning--I honestly have never done that with any drama--but I've watched these two episodes at least 10 times.

3. Welcome to Waikiki
4. My love from another star
5. Heartstrings

And finally "Shall we kiss first". This is one is not exactly pleasant but strangely it gives be positive vibes whenever I rewatch it. A kind of comfort whenever I am down.

The dramas i watched several times:
-Coffee prince (It`s his sweetness, and love regardless of gender Gong Yoo bias)
-Goblin (Bromance, Epic romance, Again Gong Yoo bias)
-Some of Hong sisters dramas (You`re beautiful, My girlfriend is gumiho, Hotel Del Luna - Hong sisters are best at bringing extra ordinary romance with a pinch of hilariousness)
- Park Hye Ryun dramas (i can hear your voice, Pinocchio, While you were sleeping - This writer is good at writing romance with unusual aspect with thoughtfulness Lee Jong Suk bias)
- Ultimate Rom com queen Gong hyo jin (It`s okay that`s love, When the camillia blooms)

I loved Eun Joo's Room too! But my recent happy pill would have to be Ab Business Proposal. I've already rewatched most episodes some 3, 4x? 🙈 but it still has me laughing and grinning ear to ear. 1st 3 quarters of 25-21 too, although it's the kind of happy pill that has a sobering effect, somewhat. 😅
And ah. Hospital Playlist too. What I would give to be a part of their squad.

Hospital Playlist both seasons got me through the stress of the last couple of years. I used to love ER back in the day and this drama has all that is good about K dramas without ruining it with the annoying tropes or over use of multiple camera angles that have ruined some potentially great K dramas. The friendship group and the individual patient case studies made this outstanding.

Prison Playbook and Reply 1988 are also go to’s in this category.
