Things get crazy between Kim Jae-wook and Krystal in KBS’s Crazy Love
by missvictrix
After being under wraps for quite some time, KBS’s upcoming Crazy Love has released its first poster and video teaser. I might have been skeptical with this pairing and premise when I first read about it, but omg I really dig the vibes of this thing so far. Please be this excellently weird when you premiere, Show!
Kim Jae-wook is back as the male lead in a romance (all hail the drama gods!) and he plays a genius dirtbag CEO who’s crazy for money. He might be smart, handsome, and hard-working, but he’s also completely unlikable due to his extreme narcissism. In contrast, his secretary Krystal is equally hard-working but is also painfully shy, has no backbone, and – wait for it — is terminally ill. When Kim Jae-wook gets a death threat, things get turned upside down for both of them.
In the drama’s first teaser, we get a look at our two leads and some important descriptors for their characters. This teaser is so seedy and swanky (much like the poster) — I don’t think they could do anything to make me like this more.
First up is Kim Jae-wook. He is on display for us while the keywords “190 IQ” and “math genius” appear in neon around him. In the next cut, we see him fanning himself with a wad of cash and he narrates the next descriptor, “money-crazed person.” In the next cut he growls at the camera (lol) and the description reads “filthy scumbag CEO.”
We then move on to Krystal, who shrinks back from said growl while a wincing noise plays and the neon description reads, “his prey.” In her next shot, she does a 180, and with a murderous look and a hammer in hand, she narrates the next keyword: “revenge-crazed person.” Then it’s back to the scared and wincing secretary with a phrase that suggests the she might have more advantage in this situation than we think. The teaser closes with the title cards and the upcoming premiere date.
Directed by Kim Jung-hyun (My Fellow Citizens, Jugglers) and written by Kim Bo-gyum, Crazy Love premieres in its Monday-Tuesday slot on March 7.

Exactly! I hope the terminal illness ends up being a fake-out cause I'm tired of dealing with death. I've had to deal with it enough in real life. I go to watch dramas to escape the sad parts of real life, not to relive them!

While I do like the vibe of the teasers, I still can’t get my mind around that pairing. Krystal is gorgeous but I cannot stand her acting. Why couldn’t they have chosen a better (also age-appropriate) actress? The show would be much better off for it.
Also, are we making boss + secretary romances a thing again? Do we have to? Why can’t we have anything else? It’s a gross power dynamic and one that leads to HR violations and workplace harassment, not sweeping romances. Dramas need to stop trying to make this cute.
Can we cancel terminal illness already? That trope needs to be locked in the vaults of the early 2000s. We must stop this recurrence from spreading.

Let's see, I'll guess that the diagnosis of terminal illness will free Krystal's character from her painful shyness and fear of losing her job, lead her to engage in acts of revenge against Kim Jae-wook's domineering boss, who will then fall in love with her, and it will turn out he was only being domineering because he wanted her to reach her potential, having saved her in childhood.
The twist is that he then discovers that he has a terminal illness as well. She will have a change of heart and revenge will turn to love. Then they will die in each others arms, of terminal illness, and the show will end. Because terminal illness is indeed terminal.

By the way, I hope it is clear that I'm not making fun of terminal illness in real life. About a decade ago my Dad died of cancer, having received the dreaded "3 months to live" diagnosis. He lasted a little longer, but it didn't make it any less painful. Then my Mom is still alive, in her early 90s, with one of the worst terminal illnesses, Alzheimer's.
What triggers my sarcasm reflex is the fact that even though it has been used as a plot device for centuries (speaking as someone who is not a big fan of operas, it seems to me that most of the Italian ones feature the heroine dying of tuberculosis ) I find nothing particularly romantic, or actually, that dramatic, about terminal illness.
Now, a woman turning 40, on the other hand....
(Joking about the future series Thirty-nine which apparently features terminal illness. Of course, I'll be glued to the screen for that one, but lets just say its not the terminal illness that is the attraction for me!)

@hacja, I’m so sorry about what happened to your parents. I can’t even imagine how painful and devastating that must be for you and your family.
I also want to make it clear that I’m not ever making fun of terminal illnesses or people diagnosed as terminally ill in real life when I discuss the trope. In fact, my distaste for the trope comes from how I feel like tv shows and movies often romanticize or glamourize the experience, or how it’s used for cheap plot twists when uncreative writers write themselves into a corner. A real life diagnosis of a terminal illness would be earth-shattering and devastating on so many levels, and I think dramas just brush past that very difficult reality for cheap, unearned melodrama. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me.
But women over 40??!? Impossible! What’s next? Women living their lives and thriving?? What has civilization come to??

@hacja: I am sorry for your mum’s condition and I empathise with you as my precious mum was diagnosed in her early sixties with a horrific form of dementia which affected her both physically and mentally. As it has been said before, an individual is diagnosed with dementia but they and their loved ones all suffer from it. Vale my wonderful mum.

i’m sorry about your parents. It’s never easy to lose them or taking care of them while they are sick. I can’t forget the frustrations, pain, sadness, not knowing what to do to make the illness go away.

“He was only being domineering because he wanted her to reach her potential.” Yes I love it when my boss treats me like sh-t because It’s obviously since he wants me to be more productive. It’s definitely not just him abusing his power. Absolutely not.

I personally think that Kim Jae-wook is such an underrated actor. He has this presence as an actor...I don't know how to describe it... an emphatic presence with a dash of uncertainty, and the body energy that is rare in many "plastic acting" K-drama heartthrobs. The "pairing" of clear rom-com genre and the melodramatic terminal illness trop seems super-weird to me, but I'll check this drama just for him.

Oh I have very low expectations too, lol. When I say I "check out" any drama, I mean at most 2-4 episodes. There are many other amazing things to spend your free time on, if this turns out to be a mess.

Maybe I’m a bit over sensitive because I’m watching Scent if a Woman, but … terminal illness? Isn’t that the second (new) one this week?
But at least they’re stepping outside the typical tropes by not doing the old genius/obnoxious boss and downtrodden secretary setup.
Wait, what? 🤦🏼♀️

But wait, is this a real fatal illness, or is it a misdiagnosis/misunderstanding ?
Both are tropes…

I read somewhere that it was a misdiagnosis. She thought she's dying so she plans to take revenge on him since he's the one who's responsible for all the stress she's enduring. Crazy Love is tagged as a romcom not a melodrama, so I'm sure she won't die. 😉

Just once, it would interesting to take the story straight through, with the anti-heroine dying with a smile on her face after completing her vengeance.
Not this year, I think.

Sounds similar to Scent of a Woman with some quirks wormed in. Leaves me on the fence because so far the material doesn't look like its going to survive the comparison.

I'll snicker all day at these comments. Let me sum up:
1. Kim Jae-wook 💕 💞 ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ will watch for him
2. Krystal: cannot act, I've been burnt before
3. Plot: refer to @hacja
Overall: dilemma (must exercise extreme tolerance for 1, who is of the utmost importance) 💕 💞 ♥️

Terminal illness? That's 2 counts for terminal illness in kdramas when counting for 39.
Terminal illness and reincarnation are the kdrama themes for 2022.
