Drama viewership ratings for the week of Dec. 13-19, 2021

We’re already halfway through December and closing in on the new year! With that, the last of our 2021 shows are wrapping up. At the beginning of this week, sageuk The King’s Affection and music drama Idol: The Coup aired their finales. King’s Affection ended on a good note, to an all-time high of 12.1 percent, while Idol ended on 0.6 percent.

Though we had some weekend shows end last week, those slots are already filled by even more new content. We got cop drama Bad and Crazy, 1980s period drama Snowdrop, and fantasy melo Bulgasal: Immortal Souls. They’re three very different dramas, so it’ll be interesting to see how they fare, compared to each other and our other weekend shows as well.

I'm curious as to why Saturday ratings aren't up yet?

Also have been curious for a long time that TVN, Jtbc are cable channels and so are TV Chosun, Channel A, but the dramas airing in the later are never mentioned in the weekly ratings report?

Good for Red Cuff of the Sleeve to reach 12% on Friday because Ep 11 and Ep 12 were back to being interesting.

The rating company's website was down? Please note that we never have Sunday's numbers when this news article first appears- it gets updated later. I expect that we will finally get Saturday numbers then.

I wish TV Chosun and Channel A dramas would be included to show the full tale. Love (Marriage & Divorce) 2 from TV Chosun was one of the highest rated dramas of the year. Show Window: Queen's House that is airing now on Channel A rated 5.5 and 5.9 this week, which would be really good for a Monday/Tuesday tvN drama and is great for Channel A. Koreans love dramas about cheaters.

What a coincidence Nielsen Korea is down the day Snowdrop premieres.

It happened once before in 2018 when their system caught fire and no ratings were reported for 2 days. Having said that knetz are already saying the Snowdrop ratings are being manipulated by Nielsen and whatever ratings will be released on Monday won't be reliable. On the other hand the Olleh real time ratings were around 4% on 18th and went up to 7% on 19th. Now real time ratings aren't reliable but more important is the number went up not down. JTBC will use that as their reasoning to keep airing the drama.

I think it is inevitable JTBC will cancel Snowdrop. It should've just been a Disney+ original series because The Mouse doesn't care about distortion of history or revisionist propaganda.

If they cancel I wonder if there will be legal ramifications with Disney? I don't know how that works when you partner with a platform like that.

Since Disney+ paid the licensing fee, I wonder if they could just air it exclusively on there, if jtbc is forced to cancel because of advertisers pulling out. That wasn't an option with Joseon Exorcist since it was not pre-produced.

2

Disney is not a stupid company when it comes to business. I can guarantee that there is a liquidated damages clause in the licensing agreement- and it won't be cheap either.

1

JTBC is on cable and is notoriously far right so they might not cancel it. Disney+ certainly won't because Blackpink has a huge fandom who are more than happy to pay to see the drama in its full.

I didn’t know that about the JTBC. Is it an extreme version of Fox News but also showing Dramas?

Episode 1 ratings are out for Snowdrop 2.95% which rounded off is 3%. Decent ratings consider the channel's luck with this time slot. Episode 2 ratings will be higher mostly likely 4% or so.

Sorry it's 2.985% so still 3% rounded off.

0

Episode 2 ratings are 3.8% so it rose. Almost 4% is the highest Sat-Sun ratings JTBC has had since the episode 1 of Lost. The sponsors are slowly pulling out but the drama is fully pre-production so it won't have any impact on the airing.

Is JBTC not afraid of knetizen backlash?

Distorting your country's history for money is not a good look.

Think they're more concerned with getting a sympathetic far right government elected and if that means a bit of revisionism then so be it. Although I don't see JTBC as being as "bad" as Chosun by some vague subjective measure I can't entirely define, it is still owned by very conservative media who are not above stoking security fears to get their pro-business friends elected.

Considering how badly Moon Jaein and his government is faring it won't be surprising if a far right government is elected to power next year. JTBC has always been clear on their conservative agenda and they have power over many influential people and companies. The chance of Snowdrop being cancelled is low.

3

That both sickens and worries me. The world is plagued by far right governments of Bolsonaro, Orbán, Erdoğan, Duda, Modi, Putin, et al. The SK’n people and the world at large needs another far right Government like a hole in the head.

5

It is disappointing too that Jung Hae In agreed to be in it. I hope he is not a RWer in RL. Yikes and yuck if he is.

3

@dncingemma Unfortunately, I think it's going to happen as backlash to President Moon's government and COVID. The far right has also made gains with younger men by stoking anti-feminist, anti-women fires.

3

@missh - That just horrifies me. i read recently about this horrific individual who is harassing Sk’n feminists and modeling himself on these misogynistic RW men in the west.

2

Feminism is a dirt word in South Korea and the anti woman sentiment has always existed. Even though kdramas have been more progressive off late it doesn't actually translate to reality. Actresses for example are paid literally half of their male counterparts no matter how A List she is. Cha Eunwoo and Son Yejin have more or less the same salary per episode which is sad given not only the difference in their acting abilities but also experience. Moon Jaein is extremely unpopular in Korea and even our favorite celebs are most likely right wing.

1

@Mon - All infuriating and heartbreaking. SK’n democracy is very young and while it is a first world economy, it is yet to deal with the entrenched values which stem from a hierarchical society. I hope that things will change even though what you wrote about the current situation is grim.
And, I can sadly imagine. At least we know Ryu Junyeol as he has repeatedly donated large amounts to Greenpeace so am inferring that he can’t be a RW’er. And, Yoo Ahin has identified himself as a feminist (even though that might require a more critical lens applied to it). Sigh and sigh. And aigoo, Korean sigh.

3

South Korea became too rich too quickly without going through the proper social growth the focus was on becoming rich. The income gap between the rich and the poor is too big and made worse by their rigid hierarchy. Even the most progressive celebs benefit from this hierarchy and doubtfully they want to see any change that gives them big disadvantages. Maybe their public image is sincere maybe not best is only like their acting not them as people.

2

Mon, could you possibly register so that I can follow you? Thanks.

I'm really happy that The King's Affection ended with such ratings! They continue to be in the top 10 on Netflix too.

I'm not usually fussy with ratings. If a drama that I like has good rating, I'm a happy girl. But when it's not, I just shrug it off, people simply have different taste.
BUT! I want to know where The Red Sleeve stands, as Lee Joonho promised to dance with King Robe if it reaches 15%.
I'm a big fan of his, what can I say.

The way things are going Lee Joon-ho might want to go looking for his dancing shoes. 13.3% is way more than respectable and we have 4 episodes to go.

I've been avoiding article on drama's long description or trailers for 3-4yrs now, since I'm afraid of being spoiled of certain plot in a drama that is suposed to be 'a surprise'. So I'm not aware of Snowdrop's content controversy. but reading some comments here (while still skipping details because of reason I've mentioned) it seems that is because of the drama's attempt to distort the country hystory?, if true then indeed it would be controversial. I'm not familiar with South Korea (political) situation in the 80s, but I'm writing this in the middle of watching Snowdrop ep 1 (15mnts in), and I would say putting the (controversial) story aside, the production quality looks good, there are so many familiar faces, and the comical depiction of politician's wives would ignites some chuckles of the viewers. Again, if the story is indeed disturbing, I could see it could go to Joseon Exorcist route.
sidenote: I'm still not used to see korean content in my Dsny+ but I guess that time has come hehe

In terms of production, you can see how good it is. The cinematographic is second to none; the sound department, impressive. However, I watched the first two eps and I also found the direction of the show quite disturbing to say the least. I think this might get cancelled or boycotted in SK; but as others have pointed out, viewers might still be able to watch it full on Disney +.

It looks like The Red Sleeve has a good chance of meeting its rating goal of 15% by the finale.

I hope the ratings for Bulgasal climb. I really liked it and have things to discuss but it looks like DB won't be recapping it?

Not included in the ratings report, but I was glad to see Uncle's ratings rise to 5% and 4.4% this week. It's really good, and Oh Jung-se deserves a successful leading man role.

RED SLEEVE continues to climb- as does YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN.

I have not yet viewed BULGASAL so I do not know if the ratings really tell us anything or not. In any case it seems a promising start.

As for SECRET ROYAL INSPECTOR AND JOY- not bad ratings but I suspect that Korean audiences are not as enamored of non-serious Sageuks.

Have no idea about South Koreas politics 40 years ago, but thoroughly enjoyed Snowdrop's first two episodes. I thought the production was excellent and the acting great throughout. On the question of distortion of history, then sadly, UK has an appalling series which has achieved world-wide acclaim called "The Crown" which distorts, exaggerates and plain lies about the history of our Royal family. It has shaped half the world's view of the history of the British royal family, and particularly the Americans, who believe every scene of it. But I don't believe that you can accuse an actor of having Left or Right-wing beliefs because of a part he is playing in a drama?

It is a history of struggle against a military dictatorship, of brutal surveillance, mass arrests, torture of dissidents in droves and murder by the state. It is a history of extra-judicial executions, forced disappearances and resistance. It is replete with bravery, loss, hope, endurance, survival and contributing to a much just future.

The historical distortion of Snowdrop has significant RL political and social consequences in contrast to your example of the Crown. Many of the pro-democracy activist generation who resisted and sacrificed during the military dictatorship are still alive and have born witness to the historical events which are being actively distorted by the far right vested interests including the JTBC. Secondly, as a number of Beanies have pointed out, the SK’n elections in 2022 might very well result in a resurgent RW Government and distorted programs such as Snowdrop could sway votes in favour of the ultra-conservative political parties.

You can't equate the Royal Family to a pro-democracy movement. There are no politics when it comes to the Royal Family; its supposed to be an apolitical institution and its existence is just tabloid fodder at this point.

Maybe if "The Crown" dealt with making Nazis look good and British Resistance look bad, or glorifying the East India Company's atrocities in India, or manipulating events of the Irish Independence movement, THEN we'd be talking.

UPDATE ON MY IMAGINARY TAEC vs JUNHO HORSERACE.
SRI&J episodes 9-12 ratings: 4.5%, 4.6%, 3.7%, 3.4%
TRS episodes 9-12 ratings: 10.9%, 10.2%, 12.8%, 13.3%

If I assign one horse length to one percentage point in the ratings, my call of the race as of now would be:
“As we make the final turn and down the stretch we go Junho continues to pull away and now leads Taec by 10 lengths”.

Question: By the finish line will Junho reach the coveted 15% rating and be dancing in the winner’s circle?”

(Note: TRS has added one episode and thus extended the finish line. However to keep things fair (and Taec already suffers a handicap being on a cable network) I will call the winner after 16 episodes).

O/T. Upcoming Ratings Preview: Yoo Seung-ho’s MOONSHINE episode one rating is 7.5%. I would say that is quite good.

When Junho made his 15% ratings promise, I just chuckled at him being his usual ambitious self. But damn, they might actually end up doing it.

The only thing that could put a spanner in the ratings works is that two episodes are airing back to back on Christmas Day from 9.50 to 12.50. That's a very late finish. And then again, a week later on the 1st they'll be airing the final two episodes back to back because of MBC's Song Festival on Friday 31st.
