Premiere Watch: Do You Like Brahms, Lies of Lies

…And it’s time for more dramas! With significant shifts in premieres and air dates due to the pandemic, it looks like we’ll be getting Brahms before we get our other upcoming music-themed drama, Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol. Either way, this week we have a youthful romance featuring music to feast our eyes (and ears) on. Additionally, for my fellow melo-holics, we have a juicy tale of revenge and motherhood headed our way as well.

Do You Like Brahms

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Melo, romance
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: With two youthful music-centric dramas slated to premiere within the same drama lifecycle, it’s awfully hard not to compare them before they are even out of the gate. However, even if they have youth and romance and music in common, our dramas seem quite different in tone and in setting. SBS’s latest Monday-Tuesday drama, Do You Like Brahms, takes place in a prestigious university, and we follow the story of several students who attend there. Our leads are Kim Min-jae, a prodigy pianist who has hit a bad slump, and Park Eun-bin, a violinist who finds herself questioning if classical music is the right career path for her. Something about music and romance always seems to pair well, and in our drama it sounds like we’ll follow our characters’ musical aspirations as much as their tales of requited/unrequited love. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for some solo recitals full of sadness and longing.

Lies of Lies

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: Channel A
Genre: Suspense, romance
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Channel A is back with a new drama called Lies of Lies. The drama stars Lee Yuri and Yeon Jung-hoon in what looks like a juicy tale of revenge, love, and, well, lies. I actually really like the premise of this one, since it adds the motherhood angle to the wrongfully convicted angle, which will hopefully result in a yummy drama sandwich. In the drama, Lee Yuri is falsely accused of murder, and later plots to find the man who adopted her daughter. Wait, what? This sounds like it could be a rom-com just as easily as it could be a revenge melo. However, I’m sure the drama’s early set-up will give us all the soapy details, and we’ll learn what’s at stake for our heroine, and why she’s willing to trample hearts and tell “lies of lies” to get what she wants.

Kim Min-jae, Lee Jae-wook, Park Bo-gum -- three of my favorite people in dramas at the same time. My weekdays just got brighter.

I don’t think I’ll be watching Lie of Lies while it’s airing (we’ll see!) but I definitely love the premise. The whole combination of motherhood and crime and love and everything is just too hard to pass up!

Brahms seems like a cute/melo drama and it’s an automatic “Yes, I’ll watch” solely for Kim Minjae!

Waiting for lies of lies every week will be so tough! So it’s probably better towait for it to be completed and binged but if only brain and eyes allow it😆

I was looking forward to the Dodo drama, but safety first!

I will try the Brahms drama. I think I can live with "melo" elements if they are musically-related, such as poor pay, competitive peers, orchestra intrigue, critical teachers, cruel practice hours, harsh reviews, etc. I look forward to Park Eun-bin's character because she is aware of these challenges but was still brave enough to switch careers, and Kim Min-jae because he's at that burned-out stage, from where it's really hard to climb back up if he's lost his passion for music.

This is also me!!

That said, I will watch this if only for (a) the music connection and (b) to hear KMJ's voice - that kept me going for a couple of episodes of Flower Crew, which was generally not great otherwise, and which I never finished.

I just want to state that it will be all your fault if none of this tropes appear in the drama, because now I have higher expectations.

Actually, a love triangle is a safe bet, judging from the title. Brahms had a serious noona crush on Clara Schumann, a leading pianist of the day who was married to his best friend Robert Schumann... so we can't rule out amnesia or madness or tragic deaths either.

Yes there is 2 love triangle involving friends on both sides. But the two leads gonna become friends bonding over their unrequited love. So it is friends to lover story! They also said it is not gonna be a fast paced story and that the love story gonna be the awkward cute one as they heal each other. So I do not think it is gonna be a lot of crazy stuff happening. More character driven story. :D

If Kim Min-jae is the male lead, is he the same person as the one playing King Wang Yeo in Goblin? I hated him so much there!

Anyway, the musical element and the melo angle draw me in I guess. At worst, which I don’t think this one will turn out, it will be a beautiful mess (judging from the musical element and the color palette of the posters introducing the main characters.)

🥺 Yes! And yes I mean I hated the character, but I have to admit that sometimes when I hated some character so much I tend not to like the actor for quite a while. One case was FL of Noona Who Buys Me Food, but she redeemed herself in Crash Landing.

4

me, too @mmmmm so I guess that means the actors did too good of a job. HA!

Pretty interested in Do You Like Brahms. I like both leads. The music element and youth romance are different from my current dramas (thrillers/crime). Just wondering if the melo part will be torturous...

If it's any consolation, I watched the highlight reel (no English subs, unfortunately) and it seems more melo in the sense of "focusing on their feelings as they go through an unrequited love/ face rejection regarding their chosen career path".

The vibes I got were not unlike Just Between Lovers, minus the shared traumatic experience of the past. Something like a healing melo.

Finally, I will be able to watch Do You Like Brahms! A drama about classical music with Park Eun Bin, it's perfect! I really hope they will keep the theme of classical music until the end and I think it's interesting the writter chose Brahms and Clara Shumann as ground for the love story.

With these, I can't wait for future details/announcements when will be resumed filming for my favorite up-and-coming dramas Do Do Sol Sol... and Zombie Detective which supposedly premiere the original dates but sadly didn't meet this so both move to unknown future dates yet (Zombie Detective is in September, according to one of this crime dramedy posters).

For once i am interested in all dramas premiering together!-😅
Although they are only two, so that's easy😂
I am particularly interested in Do you like Brahms? Because really... who wouldn't like classical music once they hear it well, or live or are explained where does it come from??
I understand classical music is not a kind of music you will listen all the time, or exclusively. I also like some hip hop, or Latin music, or ballads, rock, folk, etc... music is so rich, it is for everybody all the time. But classical music is special and for me, it has a special place in my heart and in my time.
I am so looking forward these dramas and see what they do with music. I hope it will be sensitive, clever and touching. 😍😍😍😍😍😍

Why is it always a pianist? Or a violinist? At least it's not a guitarist. Why aren't there prodigy composers or flute or bass players?
Anyway yay for Kim Min Jae! I expect fantastic music score from the drama now.

Brahms reminds me of Graham crackers... Or grams.. Anyway I either think God Brahma or something food related lol.

Violinists are the orchestra stars (at least they think they are), while pianists are loners who spend days alone in practice rooms and only get their moment to shine when they become soloists. So yeah, they're pretty dramatic characters LOL.

I don't think oboists will ever get to be the leads in a drama because they look decidedly uncool while they play. 😂

I liked the oboist in the Japanese drama Nodame Cantabile. Chiaki (the ML) chose Mozart's oboe concerto in C major on purpose because the oboist was good and didn' ask him to be the soloist :p

Once again we are in this strange situation that Viki is subbing the drama DO YOU LIKE BRAHMS? at the same time as Kocowa. This does not make sense to me. (The same thing happened with MEMORIALS/INTO THE RING.)
The result:
As of 7 pm EST 31 August in the US episode one of BRAHMS is available subbed at Kocowa and is currently 0% subbed at Viki.
Just like MEMORIALS/INTO THE RING I will be watching BRAHMS at Kocowa. What I am saying is that Viki should just be taking BRAHMS subbed from Kocowa and not be using volunteer subbers for this.

I liked the first two eps. of Brahms. I find Park Eun-bin's character more interesting than Kim Min-jae's. I love that she went against her family and almost all her friends to study violin. I understand why she would be crushing on the only friend to support her. I thought it was really courageous of her to stand up to the conductor, even if she lost. But I'd like to see that courage in the rest of her life. Most of the time she seems like someone more comfortable blending into the wallpaper. Another thing I love about her character -- how quickly she understood what was behind Joon-yong's feelings about Brahms.

Kim Min-jae's character is less interesting to me because it seems he has let himself be pushed into his career path, even though he doesn't enjoy it. He seems like someone with a very narrow circle of friends, so it's not surprising that he thinks he's in love with the only girl he's ever been close to. Hopefully, getting closer to Song-ah will help him realize there's a bigger world out there. I'd like to see him show a little more agency beyond taking a sabbatical and dropping a piano book on the keys to make a point.

It seems like DB will not be recapping this, so if any other Beanies want to keep this thread running, I'm in.

Nodame Cantabile (Jp version) and Forest of Piano are the two of my favorite TV series that featured classical music. I hope Kdrama can do this genre justice, whether it is Do do or Brahms.
[Naeil's Cantabile was a disappointment due to poor script writing, though I like the cast.]
