One high society murder and four suspects in SBS’s Return

It looks like the legal thriller trend will keep on truckin’ in 2018, and SBS’s Return will be the first of them to premiere in just over a week. The new drama about a high society murder scandal stars Go Hyun-jung (Dear My Friends) as a lawyer who’s hired to defend one of four main suspects in a murder case, and judging from the show’s teasers, every single one of them looks guilty. I could get behind a classic whodunit mystery, so I hope they don’t intend on telling us who the real killer is. So many dramas ruin their own punchline that way.

Go Hyun-jung stars as a defense attorney who comes from humble beginnings, and spent a portion of her career as a judge. But it’s through hosting a legal television show that she earns a reputation as a star attorney, and gets hired to defend the prime suspect in a high society murder case. Lee Jin-wook (Goodbye Mr. Black) plays a hotheaded police detective who comes at the case sideways, through a drug investigation that lands him in the middle of a complex murder trial.

The four main suspects are a group of wealthy friends who have known each other since childhood. Among them, chaebol heir Park Ki-woong (Monster) is the prime suspect, and his wife Jung Eun-chae (The King) is the one who hires Go Hyun-jung to defend her husband. The two women went to law school together and will work together to unravel the mystery. The other three friends (and suspects) will be played by Shin Sung-rok (Man Who Dies to Live), Bong Tae-kyu (Happiness for Sale), and Yoon Jong-hoon (The King Loves).

Each of the suspects is scrambling to cover something up in the teasers, though we don’t know which of those is murder. I mean, Shin Sung-rok’s face is covered in blood… but that’s got to be a red herring, right? Park Ki-woong is arrested, Lee Jin-wook bulldozes his way through an investigation, and all the while, Go Hyun-jung seems amused by the proceedings, casually asking whether or not her client killed a person like she’s asking what he wants for lunch. I hope for her sake that it’s a meaty character, but I’m sure she wouldn’t have signed on otherwise.

Return will be directed by PD Joo Dong-min of Take Care of Us, Captain and Birth Secret, and will be written by Choi Kyung-mi. It airs Wednesdays and Thursdays on SBS, beginning January 17.

Good trailer, great casting.

I missed a good thriller after FoS.

I love Go Hyun-jung and the underrated Jung Eun-chae but there is something about this show that doesn't really make me jump for joy.
Maybe "Forest of Secrets" kind of push the par a little higher with that winning cast or maybe I'm tired of legal shows.

The trailer doesn't made me excited either. I can tell this is going to be too dramatic, which I can enjoy but not love it.

On the other hand I found trailers for Misty (Kim Nam-joo & Ji Jin-hee) are more promising.

Park Ki-Wooooooong!!!! Welcome back, creepy baby!
... it s so weird, I feel like I could get the most thrill if he really was the killer. Like, his acting would really shine in such case... But then we have Shin Sung Rok too. so many chills... I need more tea.

Hahahaha my thoughts exactly. I'll probably check this out just for Park Ki Woong and/or Shin Sung Rok being killers. Also, a strong female lead is always a draw.

Oooh. Go Hyun-jung, Park Ki-woong, Shin Sung-rok... I could get behind this, despite my general disinterest towards legal dramas.

It does. Doesn't help that the PD's previous credits include a drama literally titled 'Birth Secrets'.

Anyway, I'm interested for the cast and I'm not averse to Legal/Medical dramas. This has Makjang written all over it, I'm here for it!!

Yes... It seems the execution of this PD written "Makjang" tag all over it. I'm fine with functional histrionics. But if they execute it with over the top execution and cue with dramatic music. I don't know if i can handle that. I run away from Defendant because of that haha

If you have Park Ki-woong among the casts, the possibility for it to be over-the-top drama is there. LOL.

LOL.. Parl Ki Woong is indeed tend to overact, but I think it's depend on the material and PD he work with. But you might be right.

I think with this PD we can expect it to be a dramatic drama. Park Ki-woong tends to overact, but I guess I'm fine with it because it is usually in line with his character.

But Park Ki Woong's overacting is somehow quite charming. Hahaha I don't know how he pulls it off, but he's probably the only actor that can get away with it.

1

He was pretty green next to Park Hae-il and Ryu Seung-ryong in "War of the Arrows."
I haven't seen him in anything ever since.

The last time I saw him in Monster, I think he was a scene stealer together with Jo Boah. But that drama also had Kang Ji-hwan and Sung Yu-ri who weren't very much better actors either. Shin Sung-rok probably will be a scene stealer here, because he is just effortlessly creepy and evil.

2

Based on trailer I'm 65 persen sure already. he will going to overact. He tend to do that particularly in villain roles. I hate his overact tendencies so much.

1st you have Ko Hyun Jung, 2nd Park Ki Woong oppa my solely love since Monster days not bad. At all.
OMG I feel like don't even care if there is LJW exists in this drama.

For the sake of Go Hyun-jung who also 'returned' to kdramaland, I hope this drama will be good. And Jung Eun-chae, it has been so long from Dr Frost.

I miss Jung Eun-chae since "The Table" (2016). Eun-chae,Han Ye-ri, Jung Yu-mi and Lim Soo-jung were fantastic in this slice of life indie film. It is one of my all time favorite.
I love her in films and I love Go Hyun-jung in dramas.
Maybe the two women will rule this show and I'll end up loving it.

Still haven't watched The Table, I have put this on my list because the last time I checked still no subs. Definitely will watch it.

Yes, I'm hoping their characters will be meatier and we might end up loving this drama. I want to trust Go Hyun-jung's choice on this.

That's true about Go Hyun-jung. Sometimes we just have to trust our favorites' choices.
She hasn't picked a crappy drama so that should make us more hopeful.

I watched "The Table" at my Korean friend's house and he took the time to translate it.
Funny thing is, he ended up loving it just as much as I do lol.
Four beautiful gifted actresses in one film? I think he was squeeing inside haha.

Anything with "slice of life" I grave it like chocolate. It's about the only kind of dramas that I was able to finish last year beside "Forest of Secret."

I hope someone will sub it soon. That's the downside of indie films. They hardly get subbed.

I prefer crime drama with many cases like signal or voice than a drama that investigating a case for a whole season. But go hyun jung and lee jin wook, both of them is hard to not looking for.

On one hand I'm so tired of the legal dramas in Kdrama. One will have JUST finished on SBS and they are replacing it with yet another one.

But on the other hand I hope it is good and a success for Go Hyun-Jung. She's a great actress and it's always awesome to see a woman in the meaty lead role. Even better that she is going to work with another woman to find out the truth.

I love that they let her do that small little lip curl at the end of the teasers. That's how she lets you know who's in charge. Be it a cop, a lawyer, or Lady Mishil, that look tells you she's the boss.

I honestly find this kind of dramas boring. It is like, what could I learn from a story like this? Someone had a hidden reason for killing someone else, and some others need to know the truth, and if lucky, they will catch the murderer and provide a sense of justice, but... is it really possible for an imperfect human system to bring true justice on the table? No prison system can really redeem/reform the souls of damaged people able to kill others nor will they be able to bring the dead ones back to life.
I know, I know, legal dramas show most of the time the way to provide a judgement and relieve to the survivers of a tragedy, and they actually portray lots of conflicted feelings along the way, and that may be the best they can do, but it is not a learning process that can satisfy because it's incomplete.
To make the long story short: I will pass! LOL😂
the only quasi legal drama I loved was I hear your voice and only because of our wonderful leads and the protective loved they share.

Lol! I know. But even though I usually learn at least one thing from the dramas I watch. Anyway, it is also a matter of taste. I don't enjoy thrillers and legal dramas. Too much cruel or cold for my taste.
But those who watch: good for them 😊

Idk how but they seemed to have cast quitea few actors who have been very iconic villians at least for me eg. Shin sung rok in MLFAS, Go hyun jung in Seondeok and park ki woong in bridal mask im just crossing my fingers that they dont screw this up cus my main worry for this drama is that im not sure if a plot like this can last for 16eps or however long this drama is gonna be

Shuuunji! ♥

Suddenly very interested 'cos of Park Ki Woong who looks like he'll be playing the twisty-villain-type which he did so well in Gaksital (but then again in that drama, him and Joo-won were feeding off of each other in acting prowess which elevated it to insane level) so I wanna see if this'll be another memorable role for him. I hope this is written and executed well to do the cast justice
