Black: Episode 16

Thank goodness this show got an extension, because I can’t imagine how all the major plot points and minor loose ends would have been tied up by now. However, we do get a lot of answers this episode as the detectives figure out how to find the missing tape in order to nab the person responsible for so many deaths.

EPISODE 16 RECAP

Back to the day when Moo-gang was shot: on his way to pick up the original hostage’s mother from the mall, Byung-tae calls Moo-gang on a secret burner phone, letting him know that he found out that a “child fortune-teller with sunglasses” was the one who took the tape.

Moo-gang realizes that must be Ha-ram, and he goes to her apartment to search for the tape. Aha, so he was the one who ransacked her apartment that day, not her stepfather (who had just been looking for money). Moo-gang finds the photo of young Ha-ram with Joon, realizing that Ha-ram was indeed the same one from his brother’s childhood. Moo-gang gets a phone call from someone, and seems surprised by who it is.

Moo-gang does some nifty electronic lock-picking to break into Leo’s hotel suite. Minutes pass before Moo-gang leaves the hotel suite, looking completely dazed.

As Moo-gang exits the hotel, he’s grabbed by the soldier who holds him hostage. Moo-gang thinks to himself that maybe it’s better if he dies right here, and doesn’t bother fighting back. After the bullet hits him, Moo-gang suddenly desperately realizes that he can’t die just yet — he needs to ask how “that person could do such a thing.”

In the present day, Black goes back to the mall and stares at the place where Moo-gang was shot. He knows that Moo-gang found out about the tape that day, but if Moo-gang had the tape, he would have gone to arrest Congressman Kim. Why did Moo-gang go to the hotel instead? Black can’t even get a copy of the guest records from then because they’ve all mysteriously been deleted.

Leo watches a video of himself in the hotel bathroom with Moo-gang from that day. Leo, in his drugged out state, warned Moo-gang that revealing his father’s tape would bring Moo-gang harm. Leo studies the bunny charm on his phone, looking conflicted.

Congressman Kim is surprised to find Black in his office. Black: “Well, the door was open, so I just went through it.” Pfft, well I guess that’s technically correct, since that’s how Black can portal.

The congressman mentions that he noticed Soo-wan and Black were at the columbarium the day of the press conference. Black casually says that his memories are starting to return, and asks if Congressman Kim recalls what Seon-young looks like, since he was the one interviewed her. The congressman hesitates and Black says it was so long ago that he probably forgot, anyway.

Black then congratulates the congressman on running for president, declaring him a hero for saving all those children from the fire. But Black’s handshake painfully squeezes the congressman’s hand, and after Black steps out of the room, his pleasant demeanor vanishes.

Congressman Kim calls someone, letting them know that Moo-gang’s memories are returning — but at least it seems that Soo-wan hasn’t told him anything. Black overhears this and is satisfied that the congressman should now focus his attention on Moo-gang instead of Soo-wan.

Chief Bong is driving himself crazy trying to find a connection between Leo and Man-ho. Black rips Man-ho’s photo from the evidence board and tosses it aside, saying that’s because there is no connection. Black’s returned to the police station to figure out who Congressman Kim’s police informant is, and zeroes in on the dirty detective.

Ha-ram stops by Black’s place because she’s worried that he hasn’t answered any of her calls. She finds it suspicious that the front gate is left open, and when she hears a noise from the basement, she grabs a nearby baseball bat and barges in, thinking it’s a burglar — but it’s Black and the rest of the detectives, slurping down ramen.

She’s distracted by the sight of Black’s murder-victim board, and he quickly shoos her out. After Black leaves, the other detectives admit that they first thought Black was crazy when they saw the board, but now realize he must be some kind of genius.

Now that they can’t be overheard by Congressman Kim’s informant, Black fills the detectives in on his theory that Congressman Kim is behind all the deaths — including the death of Kwang-kyun. After Kwang-kyun had drunkenly stumbled into the other diners that night, one of the women’s bunny keychain reminded him of the one he saw in the interview tape on Congressman Kim’s bag — which also reminded Kwang-kyun of the one he found in the phone booth twenty years ago.

Kwang-kyun had gone to ask Congressman Kim about the bunny keychain, and the congressman said that his son (who he says is living in Canada) made it for him. The congressman said that he unfortunately lost the keychain when he was covering the Mujin mall collapse.

Kwang-kyun, playing up his drunkenness, asked the congressman for a glass of water. After the congressmen left to get it, Kwang-kyun rifled through the man’s desk and called someone to pull Leo’s family register to see if he’s related to Congressman Kim. The dirty detective immediately informed Congressman Kim to let him know what the other detectives were up to.

As Kwang-kyun later tried hailing a taxi (since he actually didn’t drive drunk that night), Congressman Kim hit Kwang-kyun with his car. He then drove the wounded detective to where Missing-finger had driven Kwang-kyun’s car off the road in order to make it look like an accident.

Congressman Kim showed Kwang-kyun the butterfly watch, gloating that he’s really the one Kwang-kyun had been searching for. Kwang-kyun, gasping and in pain, pulled out his handcuffs to feebly attempt to arrest Congressman Kim.

Congressman Kim continued to rub salt in Kwang-kyun’s figurative wound by saying Clara sent Seon-young for the sexual favor because Congressman Kim had threatened to hurt Kwang-kyun if she didn’t. Clara did it to protect her boyfriend, and Congressman Kim gloated that meant everything is technically Kwang-kyun’s fault. Congressman Kim and Missing-finger drove away, leaving Kwang-kyun to die.

The detectives are furious to know that Congressman Kim was responsible for Kwang-kyun’s death. They’re determined to arrest the congressman, but because he’s a well-regarded presidential candidate, they’ll need some iron-clad proof — such as the tape that only Moo-gang knows about.

Ha-ram’s still a little put out at the way Black forced her out of his house, wondering why he didn’t want to speak to her. She assumes he must be mad at her for some reason.

As she rides the bus, Ha-ram recognizes the woman with the Shadow from the hospital, standing on the street corner with her sign that says her soldier son wasn’t depressed. Ha-ram also sees Man-soo standing nearby, watching the woman. Ha-ram realizes that the woman must be Man-soo’s birth mother.

Black thinks that they might be able to find the missing tape without Moo-gang’s memories since Byung-tae also knows about it. But now it depends on whether or not Missing-finger got to Byung-tae first.

The detectives head to Mujin, since thanks to Soo-wan, they know Byung-tae recently left the restaurant where the medication was left behind. Black says it’ll be faster if he goes separately (because of the whole portal thing), but Chief Bong insists Black wouldn’t be able to go faster than with them blaring their police siren. Black is forced to ride with the rest of the detectives, much to his annoyance.

Byung-tae heads to Seoul, since he now knows that’s where Ha-ram is. Along the way, he notices Missing-finger is tailing him. Byung-tae tries to lose Missing-finger by speeding and swerving down the road, and nearly crashes into the van of detectives headed the opposite way, towards Mujin.

Dejected that they missed finding Byung-tae in Mujin, the detectives return home. Chief Bong says that the only way they can find the tape is if Moo-gang gets his memories back. Black says it’s impossible for his memories to return, but the other detectives decide to try and “help” him, anyway.

They try a multitude of hilarious and misguided ways to force Black to regain his memories (well, technically, Moo-gang’s memories), but of course none of them work.

Black’s annoyed by their interference, but realizes that he actually does have access to Moo-gang’s memories, because he has access to Moo-gang’s soul. He orders Joseon to drag Moo-gang’s soul out from wherever they’ve been hiding him.

In the morning, the detectives arrive at the station and… Moo-gang is back???? Say whaaaaaaaaat?!?!?!?!?

The detectives are thrilled that all their crazy efforts have worked to restore Moo-gang’s memory. But it seems like Moo-gang doesn’t know what’s happened since his accident, because he notices Kwang-kyun’s empty desk and asks if his sunbae was promoted. Ooof.

Everyone at the station is amused to see that the pastel-sweatshirt-wearing, polite-and-deferential Moo-gang is back. The dirty detective immediately reports to Congressman Kim that Moo-gang has regained his memories.

Lurking around the station is Missing-finger, who overhears Moo-gang call Byung-tae, letting him know he’s on his way to pick up the videotape. Missing-finger follows Moo-gang and sees him collect the videotape from a pawnshop, and immediately calls Congressman Kim to let him know the tape has been found.

Congressman Kim pays a surprise visit to Soo-wan, who cowers in fear when she recognizes him. He calls her “Seon-young” as he reminds her that he let her live because she said she’d find the tape, and then slaps her to the ground in retaliation for what he perceives as her betrayal.

The congressman has Soo-wan video call Moo-gang, so Moo-gang can see that she’s being held hostage by Congressman Kim. The congressman threatens to kill her if Moo-gang doesn’t meet with him and give him the tape. Moo-gang agrees to meet.

Moo-gang is shocked when he sees that the dirty detective is with them, but as detective disarms Moo-gang, he boasts that he has big dreams and the congressman is going to see that he becomes head chief one day. The dirty detective drags Soo-wan out of the room, and Congressman Kim asks to see the tape.

Moo-gang puts it in the VCR so that the congressman can verify if it’s real, but Moo-gang shuts it off as soon as the Seon-young is seen being dragged kicking and screaming. Congressman Kim is impressed that the video actually exists, since he thought Clara had been lying to him.

He asks how Moo-gang found the tape in the first place, but Moo-gang doesn’t answer and instead angrily points out that Congressman Kim never intended to air Seon-young’s interview. Moo-gang accuses him for being responsible for originally faking Byung-shik’s death, a feat that earned him Chairman Oh and Byung-shik’s trust. That’s when the three of them got the matching designer butterfly watches.

Congressman Kim must have thought he was on top of the world having such powerful men indebted to him, until he got the phone call from Clara demanding he hand over Seon-young’s interview tape or else she would release the tape of him raping Seon-young. Thanks to his work as a PD for the investigative news program, he knew about Scarface’s arson investigation, and used the connection to Chairman Oh’s insurance company to hire Scarface to get the tape from Clara.

Congressman Kim had planned to kill Scarface afterwards, but because Scarface kept saying that he had the tape but would only hand it over once he got his insurance payout, the congressman locked him up in the mental hospital. Then Scarface escape and proceeded to ruin the congressman’s life — including interfering in his plan to look like a big hero by saving the protestors’ children from the burning building.

Scarface was furious that his plan to lock the congressman in with the children and let all of them die was thwarted by Ha-ram and Black. Scarface entered the burning building to try and kill the congressman by hand. Instead, Congressman Kim knocked him down and left him to burn — but Scarface was eventually saved by Ha-ram.

When Jin-sook demanded a million dollars for the tape, Congressman Kim had her killed once it was discovered that she didn’t actually have the tape. The congressman was indeed the one with the butterfly watch who met with Jin-sook the night she died.

Then the congressman had Commissioner Song killed after the commissioner told him he thought Man-ho was responsible for Jin-sook’s death. He had to kill Commissioner Song since he was going to confess everything about Chairman Oh’s connection to the prostitution ring.

Soon after, Seung-chul’s father discovered that Byung-shik was still alive and told the congressman all about it, begging he do something. Seung-chul’s parents were then killed for knowing too much. Congressman Kim sadly confesses that he had to have his friend Byung-shik killed, even though he didn’t want to. But if Byung-shik had been arrested, it would have ruined everything.

Since the congressman then couldn’t blame Byung-shik for Jin-sook’s death, he decided to use Man-ho. But once Chairman Oh found out about that plan, he warned Congressman Kim to stop killing people or else he’ll reveal everything. So the congressman killed Chairman Oh to make sure everything remained a secret.

Moo-gang’s voice is full of fury as he blames Congressman Kim for killing Kwang-kyun because the detective had figured out the truth. Congressman Kim is impressed by Moo-gang’s deductive ability, and admits that he was indeed behind all of those deaths.

But he still wonders where Moo-gang found the tape, wondering if Joon sent it to him. The congressman sneers that he wasn’t able to find the tape when he searched Joon’s body. Moo-gang grabs Congressman Kim’s collar, demanding to know why he killed Joon.

Congressman Kim suddenly knocks Moo-gang down with a truncheon he apparently had hidden up his sleeve. The congressman insists that Joon was already dead when the congressman found him. If Moo-gang doesn’t believe him, he can ask Ha-ram’s father, since he was also obsessed with finding Joon’s murderer. Moo-gang asks if that’s why he killed Ha-ram’s father — because the other detective was close to figuring out the truth.

Furious, the congressmen continues to beat up Moo-gang, yelling that he’s worked hard to get where he is — he won’t let some punk detective keep him from becoming president. He adds that Moo-gang should have just died the day he was shot.

As Moo-gang writhes in pain on the floor, Congressman Kim calls Missing-finger, ordering him to kill Moo-gang and Soo-wan.

Congressman Kim takes the video tape and leaves the room, but as he does so, he walks right into a bunch of policemen and detectives with their guns pointed at him — along with a video camera. The congressman tries to rip out the film from the tape and eat it, but from the storage room emerges… Black?!?!?!?

Black smirks as he tells the congressman that the film isn’t edible, then points at the camera, saying that Seung-chul’s father taught him something. OMG, all this time, there’s been a live streaming broadcast from hidden cameras in the storage room. The entire public watched Congressman Kim confess to all the murders and horrible misdeeds.

When Black punches Congressman Kim in the face, So-tae steps in front of the camera and pretends there’s technical difficulties. Ha. But Black continues to hit the congressman, dedicating each punch to the people who died because of him. Yes!

The other detectives are impressed at Black’s ability to pretend he got his memories back, but Black says Chief Bong is the the true actor. OMG, Moo-gang’s return was all a lie, because Joseon told Black that he’d already sent Moo-gang’s soul to the afterlife. Black was frustrated at first, then realized how they could catch the congressman even without the tape.

Chief Bong and So-tae were ready to try some serious electric shock therapy to get Moo-gang’s memories back, but stopped in surprise when they saw Moo-gang standing in front of Black’s murder-victim board. Or at least they thought it was Moo-gang, based on the fact he was wearing his usual cartoon-character hoodie, but as soon as he spoke, it was clear it was still Black.

Black came up with the idea to film a new video, just enough of a scene to convince Congressman Kim that they had the original tape. Hahahahaha, poor Chief Bong was assigned the role of Seon-young, and not only did he have to do endless takes with So-tae (playing the congressman) slapping him in the face, he also had to endure having his legs waxed. Ouch.

Soo-wan was the one who agreed to all of this, using her memory of what happened to make the scene as accurate as possible. Aw, Black kept checking on her, asking if she was okay since she had to keep remembering every detail of the moment she was raped. But she insisted that she wanted to help, especially since she was the only one who knew exactly what happened.

In the end, the effort they put into the tape was believable enough, and they were able to trap Congressman Kim into a confession heard across the country. Noticing Soo-wan looking a little shaken after the congressman’s arrest, Black asks if she’s okay. She says she is, but she still wonders where the real tape might be.

Missing-finger is annoyed that the congressman has been caught, and he removes the butterfly watch from its hiding place in the congressman’s office just before Chief Bong and his men arrive to try and find the watch. Of course, their search is futile.

Black walks Soo-wan home, and she asks him if he’s happy being with Ha-ram. Soo-wan plans to move to Chicago and start a new life there.

Black has a question about the original interview tape, though. He noticed that it looked like it had been edited — a full glass of water suddenly became nearly empty in the space of one frame. Soo-wan says that she spilled the water and her face was filmed when she bent down to clean it up, so Congressman Kim must have edited it out.

Black accepts her explanation, but I can’t help but wonder if there’s more to it due to the way Soo-wan watches Black leave. She tells herself that it’s over and “they” won’t bother Moo-gang again.

In the interrogation room, Congressman Kim blusters that they still don’t have any evidence against him. The detectives watching the interrogation wonder if the congressman’s confession will be enough, since they couldn’t find the butterfly watch.

Ha-ram bursts into the interrogation room, ready to scratch the congressman’s eyes out since she’s furious that he was so willing to answer questions about her father, yet he was the one who ordered her father to be killed. Congressman Kim smirks as he says he wasn’t the one behind Ha-ram’s father’s death.

The abuse still isn’t over for the congressman, because Man-ho — in his prison outfit — wrenches himself free from the cops escorting him. He elbows Congressman Kim in the face when they pass in the police station hallway. Man-ho is angry that the congressman killed his father. I still hate Man-ho, yet any time Congressman Kim is punched in the face, it makes me happy.

Ha-ram apologizes for thinking Black was acting coldhearted because he was mad at her. She was unaware that he was focused on capturing Congressman Kim. She thanks him for finding the person who killed her father and Joon, and she hopes Congressman Kim will rot in jail for the rest of his life.

Black watches Ha-ram walk away, saying to himself that it’s all over now. He’s found the culprit, so now he can leave in peace.

Ha-ram finds Man-soo lurking outside the police station. He’d been avoiding her because he thought his father was responsible for her father’s death. Ha-ram’s apologetic that they weren’t able to save Chairman Oh from dying, then adds that Man-soo’s mother still has a chance. Despite Man-soo insisting his mother has nothing to do with him, Ha-ram tells Man-soo that his birth mother will hang herself tomorrow at 3pm.

In the morning, Man-soo’s mother is at her usual spot, protesting that her soldier son didn’t suffer from depression. Hip-hop and Joseon are there, too, of course. But they’re surprised when another Reaper shows up — it’s the woman’s son. Joseon doesn’t know how that’s possible, since Reapers who have committed suicide aren’t allowed to appear before their loved ones.

Ha-ram looks over Man-soo’s mother’s records about her son’s death. She believes that her son committed suicide not because he was depressed, like the official reports say, but because he was molested by Senator Nam’s son who was his superior in the army.

The army doctor who found the her son’s body originally reported the smell of menthol on his private parts, indicating that he’d been molested with pain-relieving patches. But then later the doctor changed his story to say that the smell of menthol was from the doctor’s own pain-relieving patches that he had been wearing at the time he investigated the body.

Black takes down the photos of all the victims in order to destroy them before he leaves. Black orders Joseon to call the Death Squad tomorrow so he can return to the Underworld. He then asks Joseon where Moo-gang’s soul went. Black assumes that since Moo-gang worked so hard to prove truth of his brother’s death, Moo-gang must have gone to heaven.

The way Joseon doesn’t answer as he carefully watches Black exit the basement, though, is very, very suspicious. Joseon definitely knows something that he isn’t telling Black.

Black flips through the photos of Joon’s body taken the night he was found dead on the road, and realizes that there isn’t a scar on the boy’s hand, like Ha-ram said he should have. He also sees a birthmark on the boy’s back.

Ha-ram recognizes the army doctor as one of Royal Group’s doctors, who she knows to have a severe allergy to menthol (which she found out after accidentally giving him some peppermint tea). She meets with the doctor, who bluffs that he doesn’t have any allergies, but when Ha-ram slaps a pain-relieving patch on him, his skin immediately welts.

That means he’s a big fat liar, and Ha-ram’s determined to reveal that his revised testimony was false. In doing so, there will be no reason for Man-soo’s mother to kill herself.

Ha-ram bumps into the blind man who had warned her not to lightly mess with other people’s lives. She asks him what he meant by telling her that, and he reveals that he has the same ability she does — he can see the Shadows.

Or, at least, he used to see the Shadows. Before, he was like Ha-ram and tried to save people who he saw with a Shadow. But when he saved the life a pilot by preventing him from committing suicide, the pilot then later committed suicide anyway by causing a plane accident — the same plane accident that Ha-ra had tried to prevent in the very first episode.

After the man realized that everyone on that flight died because he saved the depressed pilot’s life, he stabbed his eyes because he could no longer bear the responsibility of seeing the Shadows. Ha-ram is stunned by this revelation.

Black confirms with Joon’s mother that the boy didn’t have a birthmark on his back. Black stops by the columbarium, wondering whose ashes are in the urn if it isn’t Joon. Black also wonders where Joon’s body really is — then suddenly realizes that Joon might actually still be alive.

COMMENTS

I am so happy that the horrible Congressman Kim has been caught and revealed to be the mastermind behind all the deaths. Well, I’m not happy that people were killed and that Soo-wan had to relive the memory of her sexual assault, but I’m glad that we didn’t extend Congressman Kim’s plot longer than necessary. Now that’s been wrapped up, we can focus on the more supernatural mysteries (what the hell is Joseon hiding from Black???) and figure out what really happened to Joon, since we’re definitely on the way to proving that the body in the road wasn’t Joon’s. Although, unlike Black, I don’t believe Joon is still alive, because I’m convinced Black has to be Joon’s missing soul.

I don’t have a good guess about who put the body in the road to make it look like Joon, although I’m thinking it was Creepy Doc since he was in Mujin for the medical conference at that time and was Moo-gang’s mother’s hoobae before becoming her… lover? …or whatever the heck he is to her now. I just don’t see Moo-gang’s mother as being quite so ruthless to be the one to leave a boy’s body on the road like that, and even if he’s not a Reaper in disguise, Creepy Doc definitely knows something.

Even though Soo-wan has mostly felt like an afterthought in this drama (which has been unfortunate, especially since Lee El is such a talented actress), I really respect that Soo-wan was able to find inner strength to help direct the guys to recreate a faithful version of the original tape. I do feel that Soo-wan’s story is somehow over and she now should just move on with her new life in Chicago. But… something about the way she brushed off the interview edit as nothing serious raised red flags. Every detail is important in this show — Black wouldn’t point that edit if it wasn’t going mean something later. I can’t imagine adding too many new mysteries, though, since we do only have two episodes left. It’ll be hard enough to wrap up the mysteries that we still have, unless those episodes are each three hours long (oh, please, no).

I mean, we now have a new case to focus on, which is bringing justice to Man-soo’s mother and her cause of revealing the truth about her son’s death. The key to her case seems to be Senator Nam, since it’s his son who is being accused of molestation and the cause of her son’s suicide. Senator Nam’s son was also caught in a scandal the day Moo-gang died, although I can’t remember exactly what it was about since the first episode feels so long ago, and I’ve had to remember so many things since then. I’m totally fine with Senator Nam being ruined, though, just because it seems like any man in power has a terrible, abusive past.

Although now I’m wondering where Missing-finger has disappeared to. (Missing-finger, by the way, actually has a name: Chen. But it’s sixteen episodes too late for the show to tell me that, so Missing-finger he’ll remain.) He’s got the watch that proves Congressman Kim’s involvement, and even though he seemed relatively loyal to the congressman, I get the feeling he’s only loyal to whomever would pay him the most. There definitely has to be more to Missing-finger, and at this point I’d be happy to wildly speculate he’s a Reaper himself just because he’s always in black and has impressive fighting skills. After all, there are definitely other hidden Reapers out there, because if the blind guy could see the Shadows, then that guys is presumably half-human, half-Reaper, too. How many half-Reaper children are there running around, stressing about all the ways they see people die? There should be a support group where they can donate their old sunglasses and swap tips about the best way to tell a random stranger how they’re going to die.

Much of the joy in this drama has been in the journey and the thrill of gathering up clues, trying to see how everything fits, speculating on what everything means, and waiting to see if theories are correct. But now I think I’m ready to stop speculating and see just what it is this writer has been planning since the very beginning.

I don't know how Haram could just budge into a police investigation room and beat up Congressman Kim? Is the police station free for all? Drama cliches.

Thanks for the recap on this packed episode @odilettante It's not always easy to capture all the details when you have to rely on the subtitles and there are so many details in Black. Some characters are definitely still holding back information and they haven't opened the time capsule yet, either.

Haram's father ended up being pretty much a runaway reaper since he hopped into some guy's body and never left. I think 007 would have been in the same potential trouble Black is in if 007 and Haram's dad were partners. Don't reapers who let their partners run away, end up as dogs? I definitely feel like 007 must have interacted with Haram's dad in some significant way.

007 acted suspiciously when asked if Moo-gang's soul was in paradise. I feel someone he is hiding the soul somewhere, in a kind of coma or limbo. Probably the soul would eventually come back at the end?

if the tape is indeed in the time capsule, how did joon has the luxury of time to bury it with haram? meaning to say after the rape happened, joon stole the tape right away before anybody realizes it was stolen. then how come BT said Haram has the tape? I thought the time capsule (with the supposed tape inside it) must be unearthed by Joon and haram exactly 20 years later?

I think Joon put the tape in capsule after bury it with haram, You see theres one scene when moo-gang and joon open the capsule without Haram. So I think when joon took the tape he put there. And when Haram thought that joon wont came back because he didnt answer the letters she angry open the capsule and took. But after this she regret and placed again.

Thanks for the recap!
I loved this episode. So glad we saw very little of Ha Ram here which to me was the best part, and very close next to that was the futile attempta of the cops to bring MooGang's memory back- HILARIOUS!!!
Yes there are still many questions left unanswered and cant wait for the reveals. Who killed HaRam's dad? Who is Leo really and what did he and MooGang talk about in the hotel? Who killed Joon? Who is 007? Where is MooGang? What will happen to Black in the end? We are 2 episodes away and we atill need to unravel ao much but I have faith in this writer and im looking forward to a satisfying ending.
This series is amazing. Normally its just 1 secret to unravel in the whole drama duration but this is is a weave of secrets that has been so masterfully done! No scene wasted (except perhaps 50% of Ha Ram's scenes) and everything lead somewhere. I was mindblown by Forest of Secrets but this superceded that!

Glad we didn't see much of Ha Ram too, many important things happened that I forgot about her, for me I don't like GHR's acting she's stiff, she has no facial expressions, she ruined the character for me.

Totally agree. The way she speaks and her facial expressions are annoying to me. Shes like a whiny kid and shes not a believable female lead on any drama i saw her in. She ruined Hwarang from the very beginning for me and for some reason it seems that her characters get in the way ALL the time (YAAS, Hwarang, Black) So I think it has something to do with how she conveys the character rather than how the character was written. Shes quite pretty but i dont think shes female lead material.

I enjoy this show so much, I don't want it to end. But at the same time I'm excited to see how the writer will end it.

Honestly I'm not expecting a happy ending. And by happy I mean Black and Haram staying together until the end. I ship them so much, but the right ending for me would be Black discovering his true identity, and goes back to the afterlife once his missing body is found. It just doesn't feel right if he chooses to possess Moogang's body forever just to stay with Haram. I believe he'll make a rational decision in the end, even if it would be hard for him to leave.

I'm just a bit worried about Black going back to his original self once his body is found. I'm so used to seeing Song Seung Heon as Black so it would feel weird to see another actor as Black in the end. And honestly I want to see SSH until the very last moments of this show.

But who knows. There still might be plot twists or surprises in the last two episodes. I just hope all the mysteries will be solved by the end of this show.

That’s the ending I think will take place as well, and I kind of hope for it too because if Black leaves then his soul gets peace, whilst if he stays he still runs the risk of harming someone trying to say Ha-Ram in the future. Also, am I the only one a bit creeped out by the idea that if we follow 416’s logic and the idea that 444 is Joon’s soul, once he finds this out he should be returning to his original self as Joon’s young self (and therefore this three way relationship with aha-Ram becomes weird)? Because when 416 was found, he returned to 13 year old him, so it would also happen if 444 is Joon no? That’s the only reason I’m not convinced he’s Joon.

Honestly, I started watching Black because I finished most dramas on Netflix and needed something for the train ride (plus, I knew A-Ra from Reply, though I wasn’t fond of her acting), but once I saw Kim Tae Woo as Black... Yes. I’d only seen him in Goodye Mr Black (notice the name familiarity, haha) and he was my favourite character/actor on it, so I gave Black a try mostly for his sake. Saying that, I’m a bit sad that there wasn’t much of him in Black, but I guess that wouldn’t make much sense given his age gap, and the plot relationship with Ha-Ram. But overall, I’ve really enjoyed this show, and KTW or SSH, Black was a thoroughly enjoyable character for me.

I agree that it does become weird. But I think that's probably why Haram and Black have been keeping their relationship relatively chaste for their age. I think in the end, while Haram will mourn Black, I think she is generous and loving enough to be really happy to have met Joon again, to have solved his murder, and to see him have the chance to move onto the afterlife.

I think the end would either be 1. Black is Joon and Joon moves on. Haram lives or 2. Black and Haram die and they both move onto the afterlife.

Given the relevation at the end of this episode, I don't know how she can continue living without eventually stabbing her eyes out, like that blind guy. I really hope that if she lives, the powers that oversee the reapers can remove her ability from her as some sort of reward for her role in avenging the deaths of all those kids, so she can live out a normal life.

Yeah, those are the only possibilities I see as well, and given the nature of the show, I don’t think they’d make it a usual happy ending so these are the most likely in my opinion. The one I’ve been going towards since 416 turned back is he will turn to Joon and Joon will leave, because at least that gives them that closure.

I really hope she doesn’t, but I can see that’s happening...

That's what I'm a bit bothered about too. It would feel weird if he goes back again to being a kid especially after having a relationship with Haram. I wish there is some way he could still be Song Seung Heon until the very end. But I guess that's only possible if he died as an adult, and if Moogang and Moochan were twins, but they're not, so.. idk. Our questions will be answered soon since it's already saturday.. I'm excited but also sad at the same time, thinking this will be the final week.

I don't see Black as having a 13-year-old soul. Thankfully, this is not the Tom Hanks movie Big. After death, he continued growing and experiencing his version of life as a "pure" Grim Reaper.

That said, you're right to point out that 416 returned to his teenage form. Is that because of his choice? Or does that just happen once your body is found? (Like Black's original partner 419 returning to Clara's pre-transition form?).

Isn't it interesting how 416 has aways been a playful, childish soul—just as he was when he was alive as Hyun-soo?

I think 007 always pointed out that 416 went back because is body’s was found. He said that once your body is found you return to your true form, so I don’t see a way for Black to return as older Joon, but who really knows.

I know! 416 is actually my favourite character because he could have so many reasons to be sad, but he genuinely lightens up the mood.

The writer gave an interview before the show saying that she thought hard for a very long time in order to write an ending that would be unusual and not cliche. A female executive at OCN said that she thought this writer was a genius. Therefore I have faith in a spectacular and totally unpredictable ending for this already unpredictable show. The ending, I feel, would be the best.

I agree that the writer is a genius, so whatever the ending may be, I'm expecting it to be good and satisfying. I'm sure she has thought about it thoroughly, and given that she asked for a two episode extension, I'm expecting that she will solve all the mysteries without leaving us hanging and wouldn't give us a rushed ending.

I just rewatched the scene, and I suddenly realized that it might be the actual scene they'll use in either ep 17 or 18 once he discovers his body. Actually, I'm quite sure it will be how he'll find his body. He'll dive in the ocean and find his body inside the sunken car. It's like that very first scene in ep 1 was a sneak peek of the future. Knowing the writer, they wouldn't have included that scene right at the very beginning if it didn't mean something important. The body was already a skeleton though so we're still not sure about what he'll look like once he goes back to his original form.

There was so much going on in this episode that I was just engrossed the whole time. The funniest parts that I almost couldn't watch because I was laughing so hard were the scenes where the team was trying to get "Moo-gang" to regain his memories. Those were priceless. Speaking about Moo-gang, I really wonder why 007 had that look on his face when Black assumed he went to paradise. Does that mean he didn't? Or did something else happen? And that little flashback about him as a child ripping up Ha-ram's letter to Joon made me think that the reason Joon never replied to Ha-ram's other letters was that little Moo-gang had destroyed them all so they wouldn't correspond with each other.

For most of the season, I was the least invested in Soo-wan, but as it progressed, I wanted everything to work out for her, considering all the horrible things she had gone through, especially seeing what happened in the last episode. I really couldn't stomach watching that disgusting congressman since, even in rewatching older episodes. I didn't care about him before, but I wanted him to suffer after seeing what he did to her.

There's still so much to answer that I really hope that the next two episodes clear them all up. I really want to know what happens but I also don't want the show to end. Thank you for the recap of this episode. I love waiting to read them every week when getting ready for the next chapters.

Now that you mention it, that incident with little Moo-gang ripping Ha-ram's letter was a little strange. Originally I took it as him being jealous and possessive and maybe he was scared that his brother would leave him, but it seems too deliberate of a scene for it not to mean something more – perhaps something even sinister. Especially since Joseon refused to admit or deny that Moo-gang was sent to paradise.

But then again, he seemed to legitimately want to find out what happened to his brother…so maybe he was just somehow guilty by association? I'm a little suspicious of his mother at the moment. She's up to something too and I feel like it might be related to Moo-gang's heart since that's something that hasn't been explained yet.

Ah, I just want to see the last two episodes already!

Interesting. I thought at first it was because Moo-gang was jealous and worried that Joon would leave him and go back to Wujin. But then again, that scene was indeed deliberate. Watching a show like this makes you extremely alert and seeing a lot of the sinister behind everything.

I wonder if ripping out that letter had set something in motion. This drama shows a lot about how these little things can have big consequences. Maybe Joon noticed the ripped letter at some point and that had put him onto a course of action that led to his fate.

I think it's possible that Moo-gang must have killed someone and didn't make it into paradise. Maybe he had somethiing to do with Leo's overdose. Or maybe he killed someone in his search for the truth about Joon's death. He seemed desperate. By himself, he was able to uncover what took pretty much all the good guys in this drama took months to get to.

Are you suggesting he was Moo-Chan? Wouldn’t that be an interesting turn of events, haha! Although it feels too far into the show to introduce this, but I wouldn’t put it past them :D

Also, I wouldn’t put it past Ha-Ram to go around injuring kids, given what Moo-Chan told her to repeat when she was scared :D but the scar would be too coincidental in any case

The mechanic slammed a screw-driver into Joon's hand (hence the wound in Joon's hand which Black does not have) and Haram came to the rescue, biting the mechanic on the hand. Hence the scar.

Your idea of te support group though, haha! Not bad, especially for the children (though that may be traumatising too, who knows at this point).

I have a theory? When Black asked 007 where Moo-gang went, he answered his own question by saying he must’ve gone to Heaven, and 007 didn’t want to reply to that. I think they’re trying to imply that Moo-gang is now a GR too, since the scene where he was held hostage had him saying ‘perhaps it’s better if I die now’, and letting go of the gun with which he could’ve killed (or at least threatened) the soldier. I feel like this was a sort of suicide on his part, and as we’ve established, those who commit suicide go on to become Reapers. I don’t know, it probably won’t be like that, but that was what I thought when 007 went silent.

I don’t understand the plot with the dead soldier by the way? Did he really commit suicide (since he’s able to appear in front of his mum, which he shouldn’t be able to do)? Is he then Man-Soo’s brother? Who is Congressman Nam (I’m having trouble keeping up with the secondary people in this show, haha)? What do they mean by abused with pain relievers (maybe don’t answer that if it could be triggering or something, but I’ve never heard of that before)?

I had to repeat that elbow thing from a Man-Ho because damn! I was so happy when that happened!

I hadn’t thought about Chen being a reaper, but that makes sense! For some reason, every time I look at him he reminds me of Ha-Ram’s dad (like, physically). Do they look like each other or is it just the hair and the make up/outfits?

I feel like with the way this show goes, the real tape will be found, but also, there will be a fourth (God, please, no.) tape where there’s an unedited version of Soo-Wan’s interview. I wonder what she would gain from the edited version though, but it seems Moo-Gang’s life was threatened because of it again?

Two episodes, guys. Better make them count!

Senator Nam's son raped the escaped soldier (son to Man-hoo's birth mother) in the army, hence the marks of ointment/pain-relief found in his "private parts" when the doctor was doing the autopsy. The doctor changed his testimony later and said he was suffering from depression. In a desperate act to avenge himself, the soldier went to protest at the mall where Nam was holding a book-signing event and kidnapped Moo-gang for the publicity.

I also think that Leo is the loser reaper who is the partner of black/444. So Haram can't see the reaper in Leo's because she can't see her own shadow of death. I also wonder why Haram can't see the reaper inside his father's body? Maybe the creepy doctor is not the loser reaper.

Hmmm I think Leo isn't the loser reaper because their personalities are way too different, and the fact that Leo remembers he used to live in Moojin when he was little rules out the possibly of him being the loser reaper. When grim reapers take over a human's body they don't retain the human's memories.

What do you an by extension? Was this supposed to end in ep 16? :o That would’ve been so tragic given how invested most of us are on the story now!

Also, I forgot to add to my already length paragraph (I apologise, haha!). Not being funny but, if idiot Kim accidentally filmed himself taping Soo-Wan, why would he bother edit Tape 1 out because her face showed on it? Surely he had bigger fish to fry by that point? She definitely knows more than she’s letting on.

How idiotic does Kim have to be btw? Not only does he film himself raping a 13 year old (I don’t get why he changed the tape before asking her the final questions), but he forgets to check before he leaves. He then asks Leo (I think) to check on Moo-gang and Soo-Wan before Moo-gang even steps out his office (surely if you’re gonna ask for someone to be killed, you at least wait and check they’ve left your office/building beforehand). Then tries to eat (seriously, is there no brain left up there?) the tape once he’s been found out. Did he not suspect anything? How could Moo-Gang have regained consciousness so easily after all this crap, and given the oh-so-valuable-tape to a pawnshop? I’m surprised he lasted 20 years with that mindset of his tbh.

Okay, I’m done :D

The tape must have been edited by someone else, not Kim, and then put into the safe of Man-hoo's father, who obviously had no idea the tape had been edited, either. Otherwise he wouldn't have kept it under lock to protect his own arse.

A pawn-shop is actually not a bad place to hide something precious if you are sure that your home would not be safe. Black pretends that Moo-gang had deposited the tape at the pawn-shop and is now claiming it back.

Required fields are marked *

That bad of drug was obviously planted by the police at Joon's Mom's place. Joon had no knowledge of it and accused his Mom of dabbling in drugs apart from the prostitution (he was really ashamed of her). I guess that it was Senator Nam, who at that time was Mayor of Wujin town, who directed the police to do this set-up. Why? We'll have to find out. The whole thing to get Joon's Mom arrested and put out of the way so the children were left alone sounds too suspicious and part of a plot. Moo-gang's Mom was behind all this? Leo was living at Mujin at that time, too, and I believe he was already taking drugs.

My theory is that that drugs were put intentionally into joon's bag to frame his mom so that she will have no other choice but to send joon to the care of his father that have another family(moo gang & his mother). And then moo gangs mother planned how to get joon's heart to transplant it to moo gang with the help of congressman as their accomplice. Haram's father is so obsessed with finding out joon's murder and when he's close to finding out the truth, moo gang's mother ordered scarface to kill detective kang. That's why congressman tell the police that he's not responsible for detective kang's death. I think moo gang's mother has something to do with joon & detective kang's death.

Aw, thanks guys for replying to my wild theory ^^
The theory of Moo-gang's doctor mom does seem plausible to me, I am just super curious what original Moo-gang learned from Leo that made him privy to this information. This makes me anticipates the show's final week even more!

He probably learnt from Leo that the biggest reason for his beloved Moo Chan’s death is...... Han Moo Gang himself. Other than his Mother the culprit of course. His existence (heart etc) is thanks to his brother’s death. Which is why, he initially didn’t want to lift up his gun to shoot the guy who held him as hostage. He said something along the line that he might as well die now. Probably too devasted. He lived at the expense of Joon’s death.

im buying ur theory meh. it makes sense that moo gang was so devastated that day when leo talked to him behind closed door in the hotel. he said something like he might as well die on that day he was held hostage. and it makes sense when moogang soul confronted 444 in his house he said something like he could not die yet because he has many things yet to settle and he has to ask "her" why did "she" do that to him.

Good question I hope we can also know how Leo had that information in the first place which made Moogang so devastated after leaving that hotel. Did Leo know that Moogang is investigating for his brother's death?

about the ransacked room., i remember when Haram tried to commit suicide and was saved by Mansoo, upon gaining consciousness, she saw her house/room was in complete mess and she blamed Mansoo for it thinking he was a thief. That was the very same day Moogang went to her house to find the tape and got shot afterwards. Watching this show makes u vigilant of the minute details which could be a missing piece for future episodes. I used to cook, eat, wash dishes all at the same time while watching a drama as I feel Im wasting so much time doing one thing at a time. I'm not convinced Congressman Kim is the "big boss", there must be somebody else higher up. He's not behind Haram's dad's death, then who is?? Congressman Nam? Guess we will find out in 1-2 days, hah. So fishy that the original tape was edited. If Soo Wan told the truth from the very beginning all of this wouldn't have happened.

Joon is so not alive, Black must be Joon's soul, I can't wait for them to reveal this because I've been waiting for this revelation since episode 5.

Moo Gang's mother must be behind Joon's death I think. Moo Gang keeps on saying he has to "ask them" why they did it. The reason why he is so upset isn't it because it's somebody he loves caused his brother's death? His mother??

I wonder how they will do the reveal about Joon. Black himself can only have suspicions since he forgot everything. Will he need to die again?
As for Ha Ram, not sure if she will stay in this world or will die too and leave with Black; after all there is this crystal ball with her name going around and she is supposed to die soon. Yeah, my guess is that both are going to die and will stay together in the afterlife.

I kind of suspected Joon is Black from episode 5-6 because it made no sense that Moo Gang/Joon at that time was Haram's first love, technically Moo Gang died so he can't be Haram's love interest, thus he is not Joon.

These 2 episodes (ep 15 & 16) have been my absolute favourite. 😭😭 It has been such a wonderful, beautiful balance of various moments:
- Moments of happiness (When Black lost his ‘first’ kiss. When Haram kissed the ice cream off his lips. When they had their first date)
- Moments of grief and loss (I cried like a donkey when Crazy Dog was reading Congressman Kim his rights and trying to handcuff his ankles? Even though he was close to death 😭)
- Moments of camaraderie (When Black brought toothbrushes to his funeral. 😭😭 When Black regurgitated what the other detective said in the toilet - about no one messing with HIS team)
- Moments of poetic justice (Congressman Kim got punched multiple times 👍🏻 That rat Detective is ratted out. Black even used Seung Chul’s father method of going on live successfully to bring justice. Misfit backup Detectives are promoted to detectives of the Violent Crimes unit!!
- Moments of light hearted humour (Captain Bong’s sexay legs etc)

Ahhhhhh... I am starting to miss this show already. And all of you here too.

Thank you, odilettante, for such a comprehensively-detailed recap. I don't know how you keep track of so many minute tidbits of information. Manseh!

ROFLMAO at a support group for half-reapers. At the rate at which the offspring of reapers are being revealed, I expect that they comprise half the world's population. This cannot be good. Or maybe it just explains a lot. ;-)

We found out what the deal was with that blind guy, too. It took forever, but the consequences of interfering with the reaping of souls whose time had come has now been brought front and center.

In watching episodes 15 & 16, I finally got the feeling that I understood what was coming together. Alas, that feeling didn't last long, but for a short period of time my goldfish memory grasped what was happening. So much still remains to be revealed.

RIP, Kwang-kyun. What an ignominious end to such a persistent flatfoot. Seeing him being accused of drunk driving just makes it that much worse.

I was grateful to have so many comic interludes in this episode. Moo-gang's colleagues DIY memory retrieval methods had me rolling on the floor. But it was Short-Legged Grandpa Bong's Oscar-worthy turn as schoolgirl Seon-young that took the cake. Jung Suk-yong is one of my favorite ahjussis. I had no idea he could be so funny.

I don't know what's up with Moo-gang's body, but Black keeps clutching his chest. Is this foreshadowing? A signal that Joon's transplanted heart recognizes Ha-ram? I don't know what to make of it.

Like some other viewers, I enjoyed Ha-ram's minimal screen time in this episode. I've pretty much reached the end of my patience for her crashing around like a bull in a china shop. I can only take so much jumping to false conclusions, and she's exceeded her quota.

Along with a few other parties, Joseon surely seems to be suspiciously mum. He is a missing person himself. I hope he gets found. Maybe HE's the body in the submerged car. If Black is Joon, and he found his own body, wouldn't he have reverted to his teenage appearance? Or does the reversion to live form only happen if the missing person is found and identified by the living?

I also seem to have lost track of Joon's friend (Seul-chun?) who lost his hand in the Time Mart collapse. Whatever became of the rest of his body?

I assumed that he was having graft rejection issues, but hadn't noticed when he stopped taking his medication. I'm wondering if, by ceasing to medicate, he is in effect committing suicide. (Or didn't anyone tell him why he has to take them when he'd "lost his memory"?)

@pakalanapikake, your post had me cackling throughout. Watching Black has been like following a rollercoaster threatening to go off the rails. Once the show is complete, I will rebuild it in my head, excising the worst parts (mostly when Go Ara stares blankly while waiting to say her next line.)

I like complex stories but Black jamming in as many characters and side stories into the plot is NOT the same as creating a rich, engaging narrative. Despite my frustrations, I've enjoyed the series overall and hope the writer works with better editors next time.

@tsutsuloo,

Thank you! I feel so much better after reading your comments. I've been feeling as if I'm losing my mental acuity (which is probable, given the sleep deprivation I put myself through during the finales).

It's a relief to learn that other viewers have been challenged by wading through the unceasing data dump, and the roller coaster that threatens to go ballistic. What an apropos image. LOL. ;-)

On the other hand, I feel kind of bad that I haven't been able to give the show as much undivided attention as it deserves. Truth to tell, I've been live-watching 7 shows and commenting on 6 (MONEY FLOWER is not being recapped, or I'd be totally doomed). TEMPERATURE OF LOVE and BECAUSE THIS LIFE IS OUR FIRST were my two crack dramas that really got under my skin and prompted reams of comments and analyses (and there's more to come for BTLIOF). My attention has been very fragmented, and that hasn't helped my memory. I'm glad to know that it wasn't entirely my own focus and memory issues.

Aside from the sheer number of characters (some with multiple identities) and their relationships, and scads of back stories and subplots, there's also the issue of subtitles that may have been iffy. I know that it isn't always me when the logic makes no sense.

The episode lengths of nearly an hour and a half also have been a challenge as viewer fatigue sets in. Plus there's that much more plot has to be digested and recapped.

By the time I get around to reading the recaps, I first rewatch the episodes to refresh my memory. And even then, I'm not sure how much I retain.

In no way do I mean to imply that I'm complaining about the lag time between broadcast and recaps. For one thing, I need time to let the show sink in and marinate in the back of my mind. For another, Rome wasn't built in a day, and Odilettante has been doing yeoman service in thoroughly documenting the plot and characters, and sussing out what the heck is going on. That takes concentration, attention to detail, dedication to the craft of writing, and love for the subject matter. Oh, and more time and effort to select, organize, and edit screen caps. All these tasks take time to do well.

Odilettante is doing a superior job. Her eagle eye has caught and brought to my attention many a significant detail that I otherwise would have missed. Mahalo nui loa! [Thanks a bunch!]

Episode 18, here I come!

One more linguistic question, odilettante, if you have a moment.

Is Ha-ram speaking some kind of satoori?

Thanks in advance if you can shed some light on this. For some inexplicable reason, her speech rubs me the wrong way. It's entirely irrational, and I'd like to get a handle on my antipathy. ;-)

The last 2 episodes still have a lot of things to reveal.
- What happened to Joon and who Black really is? (I am 90% sure that these 2 will end up being the same)
- How will Ha Ram react when she finds out about Black and being a half-reaper herself?
- What will happen to Black (will he move on to heaven, get punished by the Dog Squad, perish or will he get to keep Moo Gang's body on a "heart" technicality)? And could Ha Ram being able to go to Reaper Fun Land, which no other living human can, mean that she could potentially save Black for a change?
- Who wanted Ha Ram's father dead? Scarface claimed "HE" asked him to kill HR's father, but who is this he. The Congressman said it was not him (and he has no reason to lie as he admitted everything else but killing Joon and HR's father). So did Ha Ram's father ask Scarface to kill him for whatever reason? Could this be connected to why Ha Ram who was on the death list since before she was born suddenly got a reprieve till she wanted to commit suicide?
- Who is the Doctor!Reaper? Probably not Loser as how would he be able to fake being a doctor for so long?

I think the tape was given to Ha ram's father that's they are also after her father. And one reason why the tape is with Ha Ram but she don't know about it because his father just hide it in their house. It probably in the box where she puts all the old things...

Presuming Ha-Ram finally discovers the truth about reaper Black, I would love to see a scene where Black has been taken away by the death squad and a desperate Ha-Ram finds her way back to the reaper amusement park and forces her way inside in order to rescue him. How cool would that be? All the reapers would be staring at her in awe as she marches in and demands he be freed.

I don’t expect a happy ending but a badass scene like that would be satisfying to me.

The eposodes are well written, not too heavy on the romance, heavy on the twists and really punches you in the heart when you least expected it. This time, reading the recaps is not enough. One should watch each episodes personally and carefully, otherwise we might miss clues. Well done writers, actors, OCN, everyone.

It had been soo long since I was surprised, perplexed, annoyed, amazed, infuriated or rewarded at the same time by a film or drama. The strongest suit of Black was the suspense, but I enjoyed how they delivered it, as well. I've had all sorts of emotions but not disappointment. Reading the recaps and wonderful comments made it so much better. The only thing that's missing is a recap with 444 comments below it!!!

I really don't enjoy Go Ara's characters (both in Hwarang and here), but ended up watching Black anyway for the wonderful, wonderful plot. It's rare to find something--a drama or even a book--with a plot as complicated yet well tied-up as this. Sure, I suspect some things have already been heavily-signalled to us (e.g. exactly which missing soul Black is) but other secrets/revelations have been delightful. There are still some questions, but unlike certain other shows (*cough*), I have every bit of faith that these will eventually be answered in a way that makes sense.

Twisty, mindblowing, and still enjoyable. Ftw.

Can i just ask why is Black not so popular? I mean, I feel it was so underrated; I dont see much of its advertisement in my news feed. The whole production and the calibre of the actors in it is outstanding. It looks like more of a movie than just a tv series. I put this drama in my list of Top 5 Kdrama of all time this is for damn sure.

Required fields are marked *

I think the biggest reason is that it's on cable. Per DB drama viewership reports, BLACK started out at 2.1% for episode 1, and for most of the rest hovered between 2.5-3.0%. Episode 4 topped out at 4.3%, and the finale pulled in 4.2%. In comparison, VOICE, another cable show, supposedly drew 4%. My understanding is that these are good figures for cable programs.

Another factor is the genre, which is mystery-thriller-fantasy-supernatural. If you're not a mystery fan who enjoys cop shows and a side of metaphysics, it may not be your cup of tea. You have to pay careful attention -- and somehow keep track of tons of details -- in order to keep up with the plot. It invites brainstorming, too. This may be too much of a mental workout for folks seeking an escape from reality.

And then there's the subject matter, especially given the real-life subtext of the Sampoong Department Store collapse and the sinking of the Sewol ferry. Toss in crooked officials and depraved crimes, and it may sound too much like a newscast instead of entertainment.

Just my speculation. ;-)

ohhhh I seee. thank u so much my friend for that enlightening information and taking the time to reply me, really appreciated. I understand it now. I just feel sad that its very underrated. I watched Revolutionary Love intently because of Siwon (I adore him from She WaS Pretty and was delighted to know that he is the leading man this time) before Black and because I had been seeing alot of its miniclip in my newsfeed. But when I saw just one trailer of Black, just one..from Viu. It was love at first sight. I dropped watching Revolutionary Love altogether. Dont get me wrong, I can only watch one drama at a time due to time constrainst. And I definitely had chosen Black to watch among others right there and there and never was a single time I was bored of it or think of dropping it midway.

You're welcome, @tombraider.

I, too, eagerly awaited Siwon's comeback because I loved his turn in SHE WAS PRETTY, but his character in REVOLUTIONARY LOVE devolved into such a chucklehead that I bailed out, which is something I have rarely done before. It bummed me out, because I love the actor, but I felt as if the show were killing brain cells, and I don't have any to spare.

Much as I love Lee Joon-gi and some of the rest of the cast, I quit watching CRIMINAL MINDS because the main perpetrator was too sicko; I'd watched more than a few seasons of the original series, and knew that it was only going to get darker and more distressing. My quota of psychopathic mayhem had already been met by VOICE, which was excellent, but also very bloody and warped.

I also dropped LIVE UP TO YOUR NAME, despite eagerly anticipating Kim Nam-gil's next sageuk. I was already live-watching a passel of shows, and was seriously wiped out after the excellent SEVEN DAY QUEEN. Two epic portrayals of Yeonsangun in one year [the first by Kim Ji-suk in REBEL: THIEF WHO STOLE THE PEOPLE was also terrific] necessitated a breather. I'll probably give LUTYN another shot as I'm now filling my sageuk void with GUNMAN IN JOSEON to get my fix of Lee Joon-gi derring-do, and am nearing the end.

Since you liked BLACK so much, I think you might also enjoy MAD DOG. It's also got insurance chaebols, but none of the metaphysical stuff. Joseon Reaper is in it, too. Here is my comparison of the two shows for a fellow MAD DOG watcher:

If you follow that post all the way back to the beginning of the strand (#51), you'll see my takes on the shows I'm currently watching.

If you like sageuk, REBEL was terrific, with an outstanding OST. It was written by the author of THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SOO BAEK HYANG, which is a wonderful daily drama with 108 short episodes (about half an hour). My second Kdrama, it put Seo Hyun-jin, Jo Hyun-jae, and a passel of great veteran actors on my radar -- including Short-Legged Grandpa as king's eunuch Hong-rim. It has comedy and bromance in addition to scheming ministers and rival kingdoms, spies, birth secrets, and lots of action and intrigue. And a couple of wonderful love stories. It's the show that hooked me on sageuks. Lovely OST. And oodles of heart. Set in Baekche during the Three Kingdoms era, there are manes of glory aplenty, and not a single gat in sight.

Joseon-era REBEL has many of the same hallmarks, but with a bigger budget, especially for sets, music and costuming. There are numerous traditional music and dance performances. The landscapes and interiors are lovely (Su Baek Hyang's childhood home is one of the sets!). Another great ensemble cast, with standout performances by sympathetic villain Kim Ji-suk, Kim Sang-joong as Gil-dong's dad Amogae, Honey Lee as gisaeng/concubine Nok-soo, Yoon Kyun-sang as Gil-dong; scene-stealers Sim Hee-seop as Gil-dong's elder brother, and Kim Jung-hyun as rival thug Mori; plus a hyung-tastic band of memorable scamps. Uplifting and heartwarming, with interesting bits of Confucian philosophy and Mugyo (native Korean shamanism). ;-)

Re: destination of Moo-gang's soul

Didn't Black say something to Joseon about retrieving Mu-gang's soul so he could access his memories as he was looking for the videotape, and Joseon told him he'd already been escorted away? I think Black assumed that Moo-gang had gone to paradise, but Joseon did not answer, and the implication was that he did not end up there. (Was he really still in heaven's waiting room after all?) I couldn't help but wonder if that had something to do with Moo-gang having his brother's heart. Rats! I am confused again.

As for intent to commit suicide versus taking action to off oneself, I think that Moo-gang was more in a state of wishing to die. Many people feel that way at one time or another, yet never take action. And when Moo-gang suddenly remembered the burning questions he wanted to ask, he immediately wanted very much to live.

Oops! Better shut up in case we're jumping the gun in some way. I'm still confused over things that occurred when we still didn't know who #444 had been in his previous incarnation.

As an alternative, might I suggest the Black thread on the kdrama reddit? While the discussion is admittedly less intense than on dramabeans, I very much value the unequalled latitude of discussion permissible on Reddit.

Soompi is another option, but Soompi tends to get into pissy wars. To be fair, people on Dramabeans have that tendency as well where ships are concerned, so there is that, but it's not as if Dramabeans has the market on discussion cornered.

Why didnt they show what happened to oh man soo or how he lived his life. Also Joonie's first love and mom. Who is Haram's late husband she talked about or she never actually married? What happened to the bad guys who should've been punished? Wadahek? Why is Grim reaper 444 (which I assume is joon) in moo gang's body instead of his own? Punishment of nonexistence means Haram never met grim reaper 444, Joon or moo gang? Someone explain please? This drama really had it going untill came the ending. It was dissapointing because it seems rushed and I actually wouldn't mind waiting a little longer for the drama to extend to ep 19 or 20 so that the story can be explained well especially what happened to everyone else besides Haram after grim reaper no. 444's nonexistence punishment. 😧

I did not like that either. Because "if he was erased from the memories with if he had not existed" with grim reaper means that he did not have his body hidden in the bottom of the sea right, so if that did not happen his stepmother did not kill him, he did not get shot, soon he would be alive? Or did he totally cease to exist with a human being?
This would be the ideal end, but not they just disappeared did not change anything, except that he says Haram's parents did not die, so her grim reaper did not enter the body of her mother's deceased husband? Just so, for she does not see the shadows. But how could this be if he had nothing to do with it. Does anyone explain this? And another thing if he did not exist he did not discover the scheme prostitution / rape and the bad guys were never arrested, if this happened how and why leo died of overdose for the loser reaper to get into his body ?? Anyway, there is a cascade effect that in the my opinion the authors failed to predict, left loose ends and still gave the garbage finish. After all, not even Haram discovered that her father was a grim reaper or anything.
The only point I posed was the explanation of the blessed tape and why it did not leave the body.
