Ruler–Master of the Mask: Episodes 3-4

I love it. With its quick pace, strong ideals, and delightful characters, I’m certain Ruler—Master of the Mask is going to be one heckuva fun ride, despite the occasional potholes of plotholes and dips of dubious acting in the road. Because when you’ve got Yoo Seung-ho guiding you, it feels like you can never get lost… except maybe in his eyes.

Humor aside, I did find these episodes to be much better than the first two, which were filled with more setup than plot movement. Despite my initial disappointments in the pilot episodes, I think this show has many more strengths than weaknesses. And anyway, two conflicted heroes fighting over a cool-headed heroine with genuine emotional weight to their actions? Be still, my heart.

EPISODE 3 RECAP

Prince Sun falls backward into Ga-eun’s arms before getting right back up and racing down the street with pursuers hot on his trail. Ga-eun watches in concern, and when he runs into a dead end, she grabs him and pulls him to safety just in time.

By the time the guards arrive, the prince is nowhere to be seen, but they notice Ga-eun talking to an unseen person inside a sedan chair. Acting as if the passenger is her sickly mother, Ga-eun says that she’s brought her medicine. The guards begin to draw their swords in suspicion, but when they see a delicate, feminine figure in a pink veil open the window, they sheath their weapons and continue their pursuit.

The “mother,” of course, is Prince Sun, who gazes at Ga-eun with lovestruck eyes. They have a sweet moment… until Prince Sun asks: “Am I… handsome?” LOL. Ga-eun scoffs, and he explains that he only asks because she’s the first person to look at his face for so long. He thanks her for saving him, and she smiles back.

Meanwhile, the king performs an ancestral rite at the palace. Commander Lee informs him that Pyunsoohwe has surrounded the palace, but they were unable to find Prince Sun. Despite his own frustration at the missing prince, the king rejects Commander Lee’s offer to search for him, knowing that Pyunsoohwe will be watching his movements closely. The king then tells him to call Lee Chung-woon, Commander Lee’s son and close friend to the prince, to the palace.

The king finishes his ancestral rite, praying to his ancestors to protect the Crown Prince: He is the nation’s only hope to bring the country back to righteousness.

Meanwhile, Prince Sun follows Ga-eun on her way to the village, swearing that he just happens to be going in the same direction. When she demands to know why he keeps speaking to her informally, Prince Sun says: “I’m someone who can do that.” Ha.

When she asks what exactly he does, however, he’s forced to lie that he’s a bookseller. She brightens at that, rattling off a list of geography books she wishes to read someday. He’s impressed by her curiosity, and when she asks about books on medicine or Western thought, he unwraps his bundle to show her one about world geography. She gasps, wondering how he got such a valuable book, and Sun says again: “I’m someone who can do that.” Hee.

However, when she laments the conspicuous hole in the book caused by the arrow that nearly hit him, he groans that he was supposed to give it to Woo Bo. Surprised, she tells him that Woo Bo is her teacher, and she’s on her way to see him now. Pleasantly surprised, he smiles brightly: a girl interested in geography, medicine, Western philosophy, and one who’s Woo Bo’s pupil at that? Score. He asks for her name before introducing himself as Chun-soo.

They head off to see Woo Bo together, but suddenly, she tells him to wait a moment while she makes a quick stop. The visit is to Peasant Lee Sun’s house, where Lee Sun’s pregnant mother is treating the wound he got from today’s scuffle. At Ga-eun’s concern, Lee Sun insists that he’s fine.

Lee Sun’s father arrives at that moment to scold him for losing his temper and causing trouble. Lee Sun starts to defend himself, but his father blames the fact that Lee Sun learned to read and write for putting silly ideals in his head. Ga-eun quickly defends him: his ideals aren’t silly, and their teacher calls him a genius because he can memorize anything. Lee Sun grins proudly.

Meanwhile, Prince Sun is still waiting for Ga-eun when a man bumps into him in a drunken stupor. They begin to argue, but the man is so drunk that any logic is lost on him. Before long, the man falls asleep standing up and stumbles away.

Ga-eun finally returns, now accompanied by Lee Sun, who recognizes Prince Sun as the guy who caused trouble at the market today. Though Lee Sun wonders if it’s really okay to bring him to Woo Bo, they take him to Woo Bo’s house in the woods.

Prince Sun is skeptical that the great scholar could live in such a rundown place — a skepticism that only worsens when he finds the drunken man from before sleeping on the couch — but Ga-eun shortly assures him that this is the Woo Bo who was once a former Sungkyunkwan scholar.

Waking him, Sun pulls out his book on world geography, saying loftily that it’s the only copy in the world. If Woo Bo can answer his question, it’s his. Appalled by Sun’s rudeness, Ga-eun stomps on his foot, but Woo Bo asks her and Lee Sun to leave them.

First confirming that Woo Bo doesn’t know his identity, Sun asks his question: Why does the crown prince have to wear a mask? In return, Woo Bo asks if Prince Sun knows what Pyunsoohwe is. He tells him to go find out the reason the wells are drying up despite the increased rain before he’ll bother to answer Sun’s question.

So Sun follows Ga-eun and Lee Sun home, determined to get an answer. When Ga-eun asks why he’s following her again, he informs Ga-eun that he’ll be staying with her for a while until his query is settled. Riled up at Prince Sun’s shamelessness, Lee Sun tells him to give it a rest, which only makes Prince Sun insult his ignorance and hot temper.

Before long, the boys launch into a fistfight that sends them tumbling into a ditch. Ga-eun hurries after them, shouting at “Lee Sun” to stop. Prince Sun pauses at the name before realizing that the peasant he’s fighting has the same name as him. Letting down his defenses, he begins to laugh at the absurdity. Ga-eun laughs along, though she doesn’t actually know his real name.

Suddenly, Prince Sun notices the fireflies glowing softly around them. The trio marvels at the sight before both boys become quietly enamored by Ga-eun’s loveliness instead. But while Lee Sun quickly turns away before she can catch him, Prince Sun steadily holds her gaze. As they look into each other’s eyes, Lee Sun notices the spark between them in dismay.

As they walk home, Sun laughs in amazement to learn that Lee Sun actually enjoys studying, even if he won’t be able to take the state exam due to his low birth. He notes to himself that he never knew getting to know people would be this exciting.

When they reach Lee Sun’s house, however, they panic to find Lee Sun’s mother in labor. Ga-eun realizes that her dehydration will put both her and the baby in danger, but the Water Bureau is already closed. Determined to get it at any price, they hurry out anyway. As he follows, Prince Sun is shocked to hear that water is only available at the Water Bureau.

Meanwhile, the king aggressively trains a young man to act as the crown prince, yelling at him not to show so much fear and cowardice. Gee, and I’m sure the shouting is really helping him relax.

A Pyunsoohwe spy listens in before reporting where the king is hiding this young man. Though he’s certain that the crown prince is still in his room, he notes that Commander Lee secretly took a eunuch away last night.

As expected, the Water Bureau rejects Ga-eun and the boys’ request for water, even when they insist that a pregnant woman’s life depends on it. Infuriated, Prince Sun attempts to storm past before attempting to use his status: “Do you know who I am?! I am the Crown Prince’s… friend!” Oh, honey.

The guards just laugh, but someone else takes his outburst more seriously: a nearby swordsman on horseback. Before he can investigate his suspicion, however, his companion tells him that they need to hurry to see the king.

Suddenly, Lee Sun’s father appears outside the Water Bureau. Slipping the guard a coin, he asks them to let him retrieve something he forgot earlier. The guards recognize him as a fellow employee and reluctantly let him in.

While inside, a group of Pyunsoohwe members (including Hwa-goon and an important-looking Water Bureau crony) pass by to see the commotion. Before anyone can respond, however, Lee Sun’s father scurries out with a bucket of water, promising to pay tomorrow. As Ga-eun and the boys hurry after him, Hwa-goon catches a glimpse of Prince Sun’s face and the telltale spot where she pricked him behind the ear.

At home, Lee Sun’s mother gives birth to a healthy baby girl, whom her father immediately christens “Kko-mool” at her little mouth and hands, ha. (“Kko-mool” is onomatopoeia for a wiggling motion, as in a tadpole.) Lee Sun complains at the unflattering name, but the name quickly takes root as everyone takes turns holding the baby.

Woo Bo, who has dropped by, wonders if Lee Sun’s father will be okay after stealing water from the Bureau. Lee Sun’s father insists that he can just clear up the misunderstanding tomorrow, but Woo Bo doesn’t look as sure.

At the palace, the king asks the swordsman from before — who we now know is Commander Lee’s son, Chung-woon — to find Prince Sun. Though Chung-woon doesn’t know the prince’s face either, he must use any knowledge he has, like the sound of his voice. Recalling his suspicion at the young man outside the Water Bureau, Chung-woon tells the king that he may have a lead.

Returning to the Water Bureau, Chung-woon grabs a guard and demands to know about the kids who dropped by before. The guard stammers that he doesn’t know them, but he does know the guard who stole the water.

Hwa-goon and the other Water Bureau official leave just in time to overhear their conversation. When Hwa-goon asks about Chung-woon, the minister explains that he is close friends with the prince, which confirms her suspicion that the man she glimpsed was indeed Prince Sun.

Storming into a Pyunsoohwe meeting, Hwa-goon asks Dae-mok to confirm whether the Prince Sun in his room is the real Prince Sun. When Dae-mok asks about her suspicion, she just gives him a sly smile. Trusting Hwa-goon, he orders his personal bodyguard Gon to go check in person.

Meanwhile, Prince Sun grabs Woo Bo in private to re-ask his question — this time without riddles. Woo Bo responds with a metaphor, comparing the crown prince to a dragon’s most vulnerable scale. Though someone may ride the dragon, the dragon will never let anyone touch the scale. He explains that the Crown Prince is the king’s scale — that’s why the king protects the prince with a mask. The scale — that is, the prince himself — doesn’t need to know why he’s being protected, since knowing would only make his life more difficult. “So why would the prince take it off?” Woo Bo asks.

Sun: “Because he is the crown prince!” He tells Woo Bo that the prince mustn’t be protected; he must protect his people. But Woo Bo just scoffs at the thought: “Justice and fairness are lost in politics. How could a sheltered and ignorant man possibly protect people?” Woo Bo turns away from a shocked Prince Sun before shocking him once more: “If you’ve had your moment of freedom without your mask, you should put it back on and return to your place.” Omg, he knew the whole time!

That night, Gon sneaks into the prince’s room to see the masked stand-in. Noting the pads on the man’s knees, he reports to Dae-mok and Pyunsoohwe that he must be a eunuch. Though the Pyunsoohwe members wonder if the king has already hidden the prince, Hwa-goon smugly suggests otherwise: The prince left of his own accord. Dae-mok laughs, noting the opportunity they’ve been given: They just have to find the prince before the king does.

Outside, Hwa-goon calls for Gon, who appears immediately at the sound of her voice. Knowing that Dae-mok ordered him to find Prince Sun, she asks him to fulfill her request, too.

Meanwhile, Chung-woon finds Lee Sun’s house and runs into his father outside. Telling him that he’s looking for his brother, he asks where Lee Sun’s companion is now. As Gon listens in the shadows, Lee Sun’s father tells him that he left with Ga-eun.

At Ga-eun’s house, Prince Sun complains that Ga-eun won’t spare a chicken for him to eat, calling her stingy. Lol. Before she can retort, Ga-eun’s father arrives, laughing heartily at Sun’s attitude. Introducing himself as a magistrate at the Central District Office, he insists that he doesn’t want rumors that he doesn’t treat his guests well, and invites Sun in for a meal. Hee.

Sun and Ga-eun sit around the fire as she cooks the chicken. Suddenly, he asks her whether she thinks it would be better to live in a mask her whole life. At her confusion, he alters the metaphor: If she were a chicken, would she want to live safely in her coop?

Ga-eun laughs: “Of course not!” Chickens aren’t stupid — why would they want to live in a coop, where they know they could be cooked and eaten by humans like this at any moment? She tells him one of her favorites of Woo Bo’s teachings: One can never achieve true freedom without putting in effort for it. If it were her, she would want to be a bird that soars into the sky.

Gazing at her with earnest (read: lovestruck) eyes, he leans forward before asking… “Are you betrothed to anyone?” OMG. She looks away shyly, which he takes to mean that she doesn’t, and grins happily to himself. Okay, I replayed that scene several times.

Meanwhile, Hwa-goon barges into the Central District Bureau representative’s home. She orders him to track down the water thief from earlier, or she’ll tell her grandfather, Dae-mok, about the theft. He gathers his men immediately.

At home, Prince Sun has a private meeting with Deputy Magistrate Han to complain about the injustice of the privatized water supply. He tells the magistrate that he should fight for the people even if they are too weak and afraid, but Deputy Magistrate Han simply returns: “Do you really think the people do not fight because they are not as intelligent or brave as you?” Oof.

Ga-eun interrupts to deliver dinner, and it’s adorable how sweetly Sun looks at her the moment she walks in. Deputy Magistrate Han teases her for managing not to burn anything today before handing Prince Sun a chicken leg, telling him to visit often. Prince Sun grins and takes it happily, and they share their meal, all smiles. Argh, can this please last forever?

Clearly not. Lee Sun storms into Ga-eun’s home the next morning, begging for Deputy Magistrate Han to save his father. Shaking, he explains that his father has been arrested for theft, and the Water Bureau is about to cut off his wrist.

Though Deputy Magistrate Han starts to say that he is helpless against their jurisdiction, an indignant Sun steps forward, insisting that a government official has a duty to his people, not the law.

EPISODE 4 RECAP

Citing an incident a few days ago when the king released a thief out of mercy, Sun asks Deputy Magistrate Han to try using the legal precedent to argue his case. When both Ga-eun and Lee Sun beg him for help, he finally agrees to help: “Virtue must come before the law!”

In court, Hwa-goon watches as the Bureau prepares to judge Lee Sun’s father, presided by the Central District Bureau representative. Lee Sun’s father tries to explain that his pregnant wife and child were dying of thirst, but the representative simply meets his sobs with condescension, ordering the guards to cut off his wrist.

Thankfully, Deputy Magistrate Han strides in at the last moment, declaring that the Central District Office will be taking over this man’s case since the crime occurred in his jurisdiction area. The representative asks if he’s really going to oppose the Water Bureau like this, but Deputy Magistrate Han ignores him. The court packs up to move the trial to the magistrate’s court.

Spotting Prince Sun with Ga-eun in the crowd, Hwa-goon starts to catch up to him… when he suddenly disappears into thin air. Even Ga-eun, who was just beside him, looks around in confusion.

It turns out to be Chung-woon who pulled Prince Sun from the crowd to bring him into a storage room. Recognizing his friend, Prince Sun smiles brightly before wondering how Chung-woon knew his face. Chung-woon: “I simply chose the one that looked the most foolish and immature.” LOL, the sass.

When Chung-woon starts to bring him back to the palace, however, Prince Sun refuses. “Do you remember what you would say to me when I didn’t want to practice swordsmanship? You would ask me if I was giving up on protecting my people.” He explains that one of his subjects is in danger now.

At the Central District Office’s court, presided over by Deputy Magistrate Han, the Water Bureau representative notes that he has defied the king’s law. When the king created the Water Bureau, he says, he also provided the Bureau with the right to any trials related to the water. He tells him that Magistrate Han’s actions are most certainly breaking the king’s orders.

In the audience, the villagers begin to beg the court for mercy, when suddenly, the chief magistrate strolls in. Wordlessly taking Deputy Magistrate Han’s place, he orders the case be returned to the Water Bureau, as per the law. Deputy Magistrate Han starts to protest, but the Chief Magistrate simply cites the law. Boo.

All seems lost, when they’re interrupted once again — this time, by the masked crown prince himself. Chung-woon holds up the prince’s jade identification emblem as proof, and when the a guard checks to see that it’s real, the entire court bows down to the ground. As he passes, Hwa-goon notices the familiar pinprick behind his ear and smiles to herself.

Prince Sun tosses his emblem at the Water Bureau representative’s feet. Shaking, he picks it up and tries to return it with both hands. Instead of taking it, however, Prince Sun declares that just as he is the crown prince because the heavens bestowed that title unto him, the Water Bureau cannot own the water because the heavens gave water to all people.

He then turns to the chief magistrate, declaring that he should be trying use the law to protect the people, not to punish them with it. To that end, he orders the chief magistrate to release Lee Sun’s father immediately.

As the audience rises in praise of the prince, Prince Sun smiles proudly at them. Hwa-goon smiles up at him from the crowd, sighing happily to herself: “That’s my prince, all right.” Um, stop being weird.

After the trial, one of the guards at the Central District Office, particularly pleased by the prince’s judgment, nervously hurries to Prince Sun’s room.

Meanwhile, Chung-woon now refuses to let Prince Sun out of his room, even though he argues that there’s someone he needs to see. Since he’s practically just told the entire nation his location, says Chung-woon, they’ll just have to wait here until the royal guards can bring him to safety. When they hear a sound outside the room, Chung-woon throws open the door and draws his sword to meet the threat. Instead, he finds the nervous guard holding a book in his hands.

The guard’s book turns out to be a record of his personal, informal investigation into the water supply. He explains his theory that the Water Bureau is causing the country’s drought: The Bureau is deliberately building waterways to cause the public wells to dry up and is redirecting the flow to their private storage rooms instead.

Prince Sun demands to know why he didn’t report this to the government, and the poor guard sobs that honest people hold no chance of winning against the Water Bureau. But watching the crown prince defy the Bureau made him think he might have a chance. At that, Prince Sun swears to begin a proper investigation of the water supply, led by Deputy Magistrate Han. He orders Chung-woon to bring the magistrate to him.

When Chung-woon returns with Deputy Magistrate Han, however, Prince Sun has disappeared from his room. As Chung-woon hurries out to find him again, Deputy Magistrate Han finds the written decree that the prince left behind, declaring him the chief investigator of the water supply, along with the nervous guard. Chief Deputy Han holds it up and graciously accepts it.

Meanwhile, an unmasked Prince Sun runs through the streets, looking for Ga-eun. Watching him from afar, Hwa-goon points Gon to a random stranger to purposefully misdirect him before heading off to meet Prince Sun on her own. Gon and his men follow after the fake prince, but when he sees Chung-woon look straight at the man’s face without recognizing him, Gon realizes that Hwa-goon lied to him. Yay, our villains are smart, and no one had to die for it!

Hwa-goon waits for Prince Sun to approach her in the streets. It almost looks like he’s smiling right at her… before he runs past her to meet Ga-eun. Ouch. Ga-eun gushes to him that the crown prince saved Lee Sun’s father’s life, quoting his words and sighing that the prince was really cool. Sun perks up at that, asking if she means it. At their cute banter, Hwa-goon trembles in fury.

At Pyunsoohwe, Gon reports to Dae-mok that Hwa-goon deliberately led them to the wrong prince. Dae-mok just laughs in amusement: “I worry for the poor prince who has caught her attention.” Yikes. He orders Gon to bring Hwa-goon to him.

They’re interrupted by the Central District Bureau representative, who explains the events of the trial. Though he tries to say there was nothing he could do, Dae-mok tells him to settle it, or else.

Meanwhile, Lee Sun waits for his father outside the court, who grins triumphantly despite his injuries. When his father gets too tired to walk, Lee Sun carries him on his back. He tells Lee Sun that if he really wants to study, he should do it, especially if he’s so good at it — but just don’t get hit anymore. Lee Sun smiles at that, promising to work and study hard.

Suddenly, a group of armed men appear to interrupt their sweet moment, knocking them both unconscious. Lee Sun comes to just in time to see the men drag his father away.

When he wakes up again, he finds his father hanging from a nearby tree. Agh. Lee Sun stumbles forward, hugging his dead father’s legs.

As Prince Sun and Ga-eun head back to Woo Bo’s house, Ga-eun wonders jokingly how long she’ll have to be his personal guide. Sun: “Forever?” (OMG.) When she stops, he tells her that he has something to tell her: “The truth is… I am this nation’s…”

But he’s cut off when they see the entire village running toward the woods in a panic. They follow into the woods to find the villagers gathered around Lee Sun’s father’s corpse. Through their sorrow, the horrified villagers know this is a warning as to what happens when they rebel against the Water Bureau. Worse still, Lee Sun took off moments ago, determined to seek revenge for his father. A horrified Prince Sun demands to know where he went.

Lee Sun hides outside the Bureau with a sickle in his hands, but Prince Sun grabs him right before he can charge forward in rage. Insisting that he won’t let his friend become a murderer, Sun tells him that the law protects against murder because it’s unjust, but Lee Sun just scoffs: “The law doesn’t protect lowly people like us!”

Wrestling him to the ground, Lee Sun lifts his sickle to attack Sun… when Chung-woon arrives, stopping him easily. Prince Sun orders him to let him go before tearing up in sorrow: “This is all my fault. I shouldn’t have interfered with the trial.” Sun asks him to wait for him to avenge his father’s death.

Lee Sun scoffs, wondering who he is to say such a lofty thing. Before Chung-woon can stop him, Prince Sun reaches into his pocket to reveal his jade emblem. Lee Sun falls to his knees.

His initial shock dissipates into rage again, however, as he realizes that it really was Prince Sun’s fault. As he weeps, screaming for his father, Prince Sun can only apologize.

At Pyunsoohwe, Dae-mok asks Hwa-goon if she really knows the prince’s face. Though she doesn’t respond, Dae-mok can tell from her expression. When Gon reports that they’ve located Chung-woon with two companions, Dae-mok realizes that one of the men must be the prince, and he orders Gon to fetch him.

After Lee Sun’s deserved breakdown, Prince Sun changes back into his royal robes in a nearby barn and explains his plans to investigate the water supply and avenge Lee Sun’s father’s death. Lee Sun tries to return his jade emblem, but instead, Prince Sun tells him to hold onto it as collateral for his promise. I don’t see that promise ending well.

When the trio starts to leave the storage room, however, they set off a system of nets that traps them in place. Quickly surrounded by dozens of armed men, they look up to see Gon standing on the roof. Chung-woon grimly draws his sword as Prince Sun protects his friend.

COMMENTS

This show is a blast. Though I thought the first two episodes were bogged down by angst and uninteresting political machinations, I’m glad the show decided to get through the necessary setup in its first hours and launch into its strengths: character moments and swift plot movement. Even if the show doesn’t necessarily carry this fast pace for the rest of its twenty-episode (well, technically, forty-episode) run, as long as we have Prince Sun to ground the show, I think we’re in terrific shape for a really strong, memorable story about a prince growing into a king.

I’m especially assured by how the show seems to realize the strengths of its hero, Prince Sun. Even apart from Yoo Seung-ho’s stunningly convincing performance, I find Prince Sun himself to be a wonderful character, full of just the right amount of royal pride and virtuous humility, naive idealism and realistic determination. I love that despite his high birth, our hero is still a smart cookie who uses his wits, not just his position.

When Lee Sun’s father was arrested, for example, Prince Sun didn’t ask him simply to protest blindly about their circumstance, but suggested using a specific legal precedent to reason with the government. It’s only when cool-headed reason failed that he chose to turn to his royal position — and even then, he used the divine nature of his title to make an argument based on the one thing they’ll definitely respond to: status and power. It’s these small details that really let an audience trust a character with the fate of the show.

Admittedly, his decisions can turn out to be epically wrong a lot of the time (e.g., giving a random commoner your own royal identification emblem? Just ask yourself a simple question: What could go wrong? If the answer is “a lot,” then maybe don’t do it). But Prince Sun constantly recognizes his own ignorance and tries to rectify it, not succumb to some misguided assurance in himself. In fact, his ignorance is one of they key aspects of his character, and I like that it isn’t used for fish-out-of-water comic moments or woe-is-the-fate-of-the-world tragedy, but is instead used to fuel his character development and understanding of the nation. Everything he learns guides him toward doing something, whether it turns out to be right or wrong. Now that I’m certain that mistakes will only make our hero smarter, I actually find myself looking forward to the aftermath of tragedies instead of dreading them. As Ga-eun said, only through getting past the rough patches can Prince Sun achieve true freedom from the chicken coop, both for himself and for his fellow subjects.

Of course, surprising no one, most of Prince Sun’s magnetism really comes from Yoo Seung-ho and his miraculously emotive eyes. Every scene is full of the assurance of a seasoned veteran and naturally gifted actor. Though I don’t want to sound overdramatic, I was legitimately stunned several times at how Yoo Seung-ho makes the most of even routine moments — walking down a street, reading a letter, talking to his guard with a mask over his entire face — into studies of depth and believability.

I don’t even think the contrast between his performance and his fellow cast members are the problem, either — at this point, the difference in skill is so great that they’re practically playing a different sport. At the risk of sounding too mean, I actually was expecting L to bring down the show based on his previous dramas. He’s certainly gotten better since the last show I saw him in, which was Shut Up Flower Boy Band back in 2012, and I actually feel a little bad for him that he has to go up against Yoo Seung-ho.

In that last scene between them, for example, when Prince Sun reveals his identity to Lee Sun, I could tell that L was doing his best to show his grief, but Yoo Seung-ho’s performance as a failed, helpless protector was simply more powerful. In a sense, however, L’s inexperience almost seems to add to Lee Sun’s character as an earnest peasant boy trying to find his place in a society that won’t give him a chance. Despite L’s personal immaturity in skill, I think it matches up with Lee Sun’s youth and frustration with society in a pleasantly surprising way, at least for now.

On the other end of the spectrum, while Yoon So-hee’s performance as Hwa-goon is technically better than L’s, I find her to be way more unbearable, since to me, she displays a kind of refusal to “live” in her character. Where L’s acting complements his character, Yoon So-hee’s performance seems to clash with hers, leaving us with a jarringly uncomfortable, fragmented caricature of several different stereotypes at once without investigating any of them. Worse still, I feel like her actions don’t follow normal logic or even in-character logic, which leaves the audience feeling insecure toward the plot.

Is she supposed to be cute but endearingly weird (as her acting implies)? Or is she supposed to be cool, assured, and sexy (as her personality and character design imply)? Is she entitled because she was she overly sheltered by her powerful grandfather, or is she just a brat? How long will her character development take, and how long will I have to stand her on screen if she’s not going to develop? I really can’t tell if her character is poorly written/performed, or she’s just supposed to come off as crazy. After all, Prince Sun can be a brat and a half sometimes, too, like when he complained after Ga-eun refused him a whole chicken to eat, but there are ways to make brattiness understandable and interesting. Even the Water Bureau representative made his nasty character interesting by turning his condescension into sass, moving toward comic limits. I find what Yoon So-hee is doing with Hwa-goon is uninteresting, and frankly hard to watch.

Thankfully, though, Hwa-goon is hardly the emotional center of the show, which is already formulating a strong conceptual core around the characters that do matter, and the ones who are all trying to figure themselves out in a horrible, complicated world. I already love how the show’s major theme of “identity” is reflected directly in these characters as they try to figure out who they “really” are — behind both the mask that they are forced to wear (literally, for our hero) and the one society places on them. Even in casual character interactions, the idea of knowing your “place” kept recurring throughout the episode. The fireflies scene comes to mind in particular, when Lee Sun quickly looks away from his crush, knowing that he had no chance with a noble lady… while Prince Sun looked on confidently, perhaps more assured (or entitled) in his qualifications.

While the mask itself — both intricately beautiful and inhumanly difficult to wear — holds beautiful implications of the prince’s struggle for his identity, I loved the recurring idea of the missing prince who had to return to his rightful “place” on the throne, despite the fact that it isn’t really Prince Sun who needs to return to the palace… but his masked figure. In fact, throughout this episode, we see that superficial tools of identity — the jade emblem, the metal mask — are what really hold royal power, not necessarily the prince himself. While the current throne may be the rightful place of the mask, perhaps it’s not the right place for Prince Sun. In order to belong on his true throne, Sun will have to transform Joseon into a righteous nation — but that’s only if he figures out who he is without the mask first.

Hwa Goon is such a creepy character, her obsession with Lee Sun is creepy and more than sure she will do anything to have him or if not she will choose to destroy him and everything he cares...Don't know if all of this is based on her upbringing, that feel of having what she desires at hand, because her Grandfather clearly taught her that or a mix between that and her ill personality that would be there no matter her status(in that respect)...

I must say i giggled at the little clishe reversals we've got here, the girl saving the guy, that palaquin scene were he reveals himself to her in that innocent way most heroines do in their first meet-up with the fated one...

Our Crown Prince will have a tough journey ahead of him and more than one slap with the reality surronding him that sadly doesn't have anything to do with what's right or what should be...I like his desire for justice, for the good of the people yet we could say he is still innocent and i must say i'm so into his journey to becoming a great King and more seeing how he will gain power as for now he doesn't have much even if he will loose some of the now bright innocence he still holds, that purity yet untached by darkness. It won't be easy getting rid of a full room of councels that the King now has and are all by the Pyunsoo hwe side and even more finding new reliable people to work with..I can understand a bit more why he will himself feel so guilty after seeing people die because of his future actions...

Like always the poor and good ones die first...Felt so sad for the poor Sun(the poor one,i'll call him as that) feeling helpless in more than one ocassion because of his status and i'm sure he felt deep down hate for Lee Sun as his involvment for good or bad had his father killed...I must say i'm quite in for their journey and how this two will grow up and i hope Sun's possible desire for more will not tear away or backstab our future King, joining hands with the old evil one,it would be really sad yet it's something i could expect for plot wise...

Now into fan, ehem, noona mode...Yoo Seung Ho is sooo damn handsome and full of charisma as always, everytime he is on the screen i can't take my eyes of him, full of demanding presence...

Hwang Chi Yeol OST in the ending of the episode is amazing, can't wait for it to be realised...

I didn't realize HG would fall so hard for the CP, having seen him only once. Perhaps behind all the obsessed facade, she might turn out to be the faithful kind? After all, she misled her troops into capturing the wrong CP while she goes looking for the right one.

I think that was because she thought her grandfather will have the crown prince killed. She didn't know that he wants the prince to be on his side.

I thought Dae Mok and his people have always been clear about getting the Crown Prince into their group?

I guess she knows the CP will suffer even though he won't be killed straight off because Pyunsoohwe has only evil intentions. What I'd like to see is some inner conflict. I am sure there will be plenty more to come because she will be torn between her loyalty to Pyunsoohwe and her love for the Crown Prince.

Yes, they made it clear that they wanted Prince Sun to be part of their group to ensure their power after his father's reign but what's unsure is how they'll react if Prince Sun stubbornly decline. There's no limit to what they can do. The King is in their control and the water, basically the people's lives, are on their hands.

0

@outofthisworld yes, they made it clear. But it seemed like HG wasn't aware of them. She did ask her grandfather if he was going to kill the Crown Prince. That's why i assumed that she doesn 't know her grandfather's plan.

0

@joyee More likely if he can't control him they will choose to get rid of him and put someone they can control,a puppet in his place...And it's even more easy in his case as no one saw his true face so they can put anyone(so i hope Sun won't become their puppet for personal greed, like the King did back then)

2

Going by the synopsis of her character(which I will have to keep reading to remind me where this character is going!), she is more likely to die for the Crown Prince than the CP dying because of her.

I probably read her wrongly but I think she misled her troops not because she wanted to protect him but she wanted to see him without anyone else beside her.

Eh...I am not sure. Boy, I am going to have a tough time with this character.

That's interesting and I completely agree. She already sees him as "her" crown prince. And so she wants him for herself even if it means she has to lead her grandfather's minions, on a goose chase.

Going of the synopsis for the drama and knowing that it will appear that Ga Eun's father is killed by the crown prince; I wonder if HG will fake it in order to drive a wedge between the prince and Ga Eun. That would make more sense then the prince actually being responsible for her father's death.

I think it's only fair that she falls that hard for him just after one encounter. Let's be honest. Judging from this comment section alone there would be enough Hwa Goons to flood Joseon, and that is we only see his eyes through the scene. She had the luxury and honour of having him stare at her like that!
The only difference though is that the Hwa Goons in this thread are only giggling fangirls and not any snotty brats.

There must be something Yoon So-hee is doing right, in my eyes at least, because I can't see anything wrong with her performance. I mean I love Myungsoo, but the scene where he had Yoo Seung-ho fought made me super uncomfortable because he was kinda bad. I've not noticed any lack on Yoon So-hee's part yet, and I'm a little more interested in her character than Ga-eun right now.

Yeah, Hwa-goon is kinda creepy af. And annoying. Oh, she's getting annoying REAL FAST. I first thought she was creepy during the moment when she pricked herself in the neck to match with the mark she left on Prince Sun's neck. And then she smiled giddily afterwards. THAT was very unsettling. Now she's just getting on my nerves with her possessiveness and more importantly, she's constantly putting our prince in danger with her antics and I don't think it's possible for me to like her. At least not now.

I also noticed all the little role reversals between Prince Sun and Ga-eun, too. It's so cute. THEY'RE so cute.

Thank you so much for the recap! ^^

A few quick things I have noticed from Ep 3 & 4:
(1) The CP has to pin everyone to the wall, clasps his hand over their mouth and stares at them intensely doesn't he? XD
(2) When Ga Eun helped the CP by hiding him in a palanquin, she's literally free outside while he's trapped inside a confined 'box'. It fits well with all the chicken and cage talk later on. Let's talk about symbolism!
(3) L is still a little bit green. He still has to relies a lot on shouting to get his portrayal of the character across, while I find his acting during the water selling scene has the right amount of attitude to get an impression that he's a quick-tempered person. Is boy sweet and soft in real life? Because that's the impression I've got from some of his scenes. Anyway, he's good while around KSH. I really like his crush on her.
(4) The CP's personal bodyguard: Does anyone also think that he looks similar-ish to Lee Jun Ki in ML? Not exactly the same, but they look a little bit alike. Makes me think he should have belonged to Hwarang; he would certainly make another eye-candy while not look sissy.
(5) Ugh, So-Hee's acting actually makes me appreciate Lim Ji Yeon's character and portrayal in Jackpot, and I was critical of her before. I even thought if they decided to cast Lim Ji Yeon as Hwa Gun I'd welcome it, and even if Hwa Gun is written to be an annoying brat she might make it more bearable on screen.
(6) I've figured out what problems I have with So-Hee. It's because she always seems to have that gleeful expression on her, like almost all the time, apart from when she glares or grimaces. She is gleeful even when the situation doesn't necessarily call for it. Grandpa asks: 'How do you know the man at the Royal Ancestral Shrine is not the CP?' *looks gleeful*. Gon confirms that he sees the man wearing knee pads *looks gleeful again*. Grandpa asks 'The CP ran away?' *gleefully leaves the room* then *gleefully demands Gon to find her the son of some Chief Commander*. Sees him in the market: *stands gleefully in the middle of the road*. She seems to have a hard time distinguishing between a character with a bright personality who finds good-natured amusement in things and a spoiled young lady who has every potential to be dark, malicious, possessive and obsessed but still layered and interesting. Furthermore, she doesn't look like someone's in love or obsessed with a man to me. She just looks ... gleeful.
(7) Looks like Hwa Gun is indeed written to be a hateful/ bad character. She uses Lee Sun the peasant's daddy as a bait to lure the CP out, and that's disrespect for human lives for her own selfish obsession with the CP.

and the best for last
(8) He asks whether she is betrothed. OMG BOY CAN'T WAIT TO TAKE HER HOME WITH HIM ALREADY. Am I the only one who's all giddy right now?
(9) Their stares amidst the fireflies field and the near the fire ... so much love and earnest. Yes please...

I really love that scene with the fireflies when both Lee Sun looked lovingly at Gaeun. The stark contrast between the two men, when Prince Sun just stared smitten to his heart's content at Gaeun while Lee Sun quickly looked away and bowed when Gaeun looked his way, could not be more obvious.

I felt bad for Lee Sun, but I cannot help feeling so giddy for Gaeun and Prince Sun because lurvvvv is in the air for them and I just can't help but bask in its glory.

Omg, yes! That three-way yearning stares from them made me feel so bad for Lee Sun because he couldn't even look Ga-eun in the eyes. On the other hand, Prince Sun couldn't even deny his interest in Ga-eun if he wanted to, and just continued to look at her. I was like, "that's how you lose her, dude," to Lee Sun while Ga-eun just kept her gaze fixated on Prince Sun, too.

The puppies falling in ~lurve~ makes me giddy, too. Oh so giddy!

Lol I actually replayed those scenes more times than I can count XD, and every time I still flail and squeal like no one's business.
Gosh, I think I remember every single scene he looks at her. The only scene I don't replay that much is at the court where he rescues Lee Sun's daddy because why do they have to insert Hwa Gun's smirk when our boy is secretly looking at his crush and is smitten like there is no tomorrow :O

I love YSH's expressive eyes like SO. MUCH. While CP is drowned in lurrve and Ga Eun's prettiness I'm drowned in his longing gaze *cries cheesy tears of a crazy fangirl*

1

2) That's a great observation about the cage and chicken and the palanquin.
3) Myungsoo is quite quiet in real life, and quite introverted. I agree with you, that in the quieter moments, he does seem green.

1. That's what I noticed too! He has done it to Hwagun and Peasant Sun, I wonder if one day he is going to do it to Gaeun, too?

2. This I didn't notice! Nice catch! It seems like the drama actually has some symbolisms that I didn't notice.

3. Yes, L is sweet and soft in real life :D His personality is actually different from most of the characters he has played, so that might be why his acting is awkward sometimes. But in this one he started off better than usual, and he puts a lot of effort in portraying the emotions. Like you, I found some of his yellings a little too much, but he is good when he is with his father and Gaeun! His crush on Gaeun is cute.

5-7. Re: Sohee and Hwagun. I have only watched two dramas with her, this and One More Time (in which she also acted with L as main leads) and in both I found her to be incapable of delivering a lot of expressions and in general it doesn't feel like she puts a lot of efforts in portraying her character right. I'm not sure whether Hwagun will be an antagonist or not, but her character description was actually interesting because it said that she would betray her family for her love, so she might be ended up helping the Crown Price in some way. I really hope her character will become more interesting and Sohee will improve too. Her character has potentials!

8-10. Crown Prince surely moves fast with his interest in her! I find it really cute that he became so enamored with her, but who wouldn't? She is so nice and smart. I am going to be really sad when their puppy crush turns all angsty. I am so ready to watch their journey together, though!

Oooohh that's interesting to know re. L, as I wrote in my reply to daydee. The reason why I had that impression was because I could feel that L was trying too hard to act out someone who he is certainly not. This is not meant to be a harsh criticism, though, just what I observed from his acting. Like hanshimi I also feel bad that of all people he has to go up against YSH, who has so far made everyone in the young cast pale in comparison. I don't have high expectations for L, but I hope he will learn and improve as the drama progresses.

As for Hwa Gun, I actually like antagonist characters so long as they are well-written and are not just the stereotypical extreme ends of the black-white spectrum. The way most K-dramas are written, the second female leads, and often times the second male leads, have lots of potential to be interesting, but they do require very good actors/ actresses to make it happen. Sadly they are often treated as the backdrop to elevate the main characters, and the actors/ actresses chosen for those roles are often not mature enough acting-wise. Not always, but often that is the case, which is a shame, imo.

Yes, that's what I felt too when I watched him act. Since I 'know' his actual personality (since I am a fan of him as an idol), sometimes I still can see him unable to blend into the character even though he tried hard and I still see him as L who is trying to act out a character, instead of the character. I hope he will improve too, he usually became better and more natural as he starts to feel more comfortable playing the character, so hopefully in this one too!

For me, there were times when Second Leads are far more interesting than the leads, even if they're an antagonist. But usually it's the combination of a good actor/actress and a well written character, which was rare for second leads. Even if the character is not that well written, a really good actor can make the character more interesting. I don't think I will see that here, sadly.

She should have known what her grandpa wants to do with the CP. Now that all of you mentioned it, she does look gleeful all the time. Initially, I was thinking why is she so smug all the time. Is it because she is in the know, when everyone else is in the dark about the prince's identity? I don't like the way she looks so smug all the time, even when the situation doesn't call for it. More emotive expressions and less gleeful ones, please!

I have already started to contradict myself in my comments about her motives. Yeah, she knows her grandpa won't kill the CP but going by her expressions alone, it's no different from an evil spy who is leaking the target's whereabouts so that the assassins can find the person.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Guys, you're so right. She's giving me a headache trying to decipher her character here. I also think that she is full of herself because she's the only outsider who has seen the Prince's face. In my imagination she knows she has his secret, and that gives her the notion that she 'owns' him or he is hers in a way, if that makes sense? I interpret her letting on his whereabouts in the middle of the meeting just because she wants the whole world to know that she knows about him much better than anyone else, and that's her way of claiming him as her possession. The way she snaps at one of the officials is as if she wants to warn the old man not to get ahead of himself, because he knows nothing about her Crown Prince. However, I was actually expecting some haughtiness and enjoyment of the only one being in the know among her bunch of people, but all I got on screen is some kind of glee that loses all the meanings to the interactions and how her character is supposed to behave. Long story short: she tries to look smug, but she fails.

1

Required fields are marked *

Yes that's her expression in her previous dramas too. Well that's her charm. She looks like Park Siyeon with being 'gleeful'. I don't like her character as a brat obsessed agasshi. I finally found a drama I could fully enjoy! Though I'm currently watching three others, I'm watching them mostly for curiosity sake. You know, just to find out where the story will take us.

Ruler is different. My second sageuk after the disastrous Hwarang, I was captivated by the first two episodes and the latest ones just fueled my love for it.

Enjoyment for me is when I notice/focus more on the good parts and be totally absorbed by show. To not nitpick on anything and just enjoy what the story, the actors, and the production has to offer.

I'm enjoying the stunning cinematography, the political mess, and the side characters. But mostly, I'm drawn to Yoo Seung-ho. He's character is amazing. He's acting is amazing. I think I found my new precious.

I don't usually watch saguek, but man, this show is daebak! I might be changing my mind about sagueks if all sagueks are of this caliber. I agree with you on the cinematography and characters, though I think it's the leads and veterans anchoring the drama more as compared to the secondary leads.

Yoo Seung-ho is the heart of this drama and I love everything you said about him, how great he is in this role, and how much more he brings to an already well written character.

Thank you for the recap, hanshimi!

I loved this episode! I laughed so hard at Ga-eun's reaction when CP Sun asked her if he was handsome, she was staring at him because she was waiting for his answer to her: "are you hurt?", he was staring back at her and I think it was him who fell for her at the first sight, the way he smiles when he's looking at her, so so CUTE! And his " are you betrothed?" killed me, take it slow, boy!

My heart broke for peasant Sun, I was not expecting his father to die, not after what our CP did to get him released (he was so cool in that scene, I felt so proud, LOL) I honestly felt for peasant Sun when he cried after finding his father dead, I think L is doing a good job here compared to his other dramas of course, but it was our CP that got me the most, his tear-filled eyes when he was blaming himself for Sun's father's death, I just couldn't!!

I think pyunsoohwe is going to mistake peasant Sun for our CP since he's given him the jade emblem, is he going to join them? If he does then I think he'll do it to take revenge, at least that's what I'm hoping because I don't want him to end up being power hungry and backstab our CP later!

I just can't seem to like Hwa-goon (not that I want to). I'm not sure if it's the actor or the character or both but she feels so off to me! When she first saw Sun at the water bureau and recognized him, why was there no reaction to that? No shock, nothing, why? I honestly, can't get her obsession over him, she's creepy!

And, I love Chung-woon, he's so cool!!

I agree with you. I think the peasant Lee Sun is going to get mistaken as the CP because of the emblem. It does seem that the objects are more powerful in identifying the royals as compared to the actual royals themselves. I can't wait for the mistaken identity to happen, and what it boils for future episodes.

Thanks for the detailed analysis @hanshimi. I loved reading your comments and completely agree with everything you said.. Yoo Seung Ho is such a good actor that I perk up at every scene he is in just to catch sight of all of his expressive eyes and emotions. And he has such a great chemistry with Kim So Hyun. Like L, we can literally see sparks flying between them. Their interactions are so comfortable and easy flowing and they already look out for each other. I especially liked that scene when Prince Sun prevents Ga-Eun from seeing the dead body by turning her head towards him. I just love love love the OTP <3.
On the other hand, Hwa-Goon is just plain irritating me with her smug looks and smirks. And when she said "My crown prince" I just wanted to reach out and slap her sly smile off her face.. Grr!! Thank heavens This episode had a load of Yoo Seung Ho to prevent me from dwelling on her..

Those small gestures of Prince Sun toward Gaeun got me right in the heart. I love them when they are bickering. I love them when they are having quiet moments. I just love them.

The bickering is especially fun to watch (that damn chicken! Hehe!). I know I should prepare myself for the angst that will surely come, but for now I will bask in the sweet budding romance of OTP.

I'm so conflicted right now. I quite like the show I love the pace and of course our lovely prince. But I admit I came into this because I would like to see more of Yoon So Hee. At first I wonder, is she really that bad? Then I realized it's her tone, it's not sageuk-speech. Here's hoping she is improving along the way - that said she won't bother me from enjoying the drama :)

am i the only one who nearly screamed at the tv when prince sun all but gave away his jade seal to lee sun?? i nearly switched channels dreading and internally cringing at the consequences of that very action.
it reminds me of when sam maek jong lost his bloody bracelet seal and his rival was in possession of it in hwarang. looking back at that drama, we can already see that losing or not being in possession of your seal will bring you trouble somewhere down the line, especially when your subjects dont know how you look like and _anyone_ with that seal can claim that theyre the actual king/crown prince.

that aside, hwagun was a bit unbearable to watch. the lady's a sociopath and will sacrifice the world just to get what she wants, which in this case, is prince sun. i agree with her grandfather; i pity the prince because hwagun can recognize him now.
she's dangerous from my point of view. she's definitely smart and she has influence and power. if prince sun unknowingly sets her off somehow, there would be hell to pay.
although, i cant really follow her train of thought. she likes the prince from what i can tell, but she's willingly helping the hunt for his head. she then misguides them at the end. what's her goal? does she just want prince sun to acknowledge her existence and hail her as his savior? idk she bothers me a lot as her actions dont have much meaning to them.

i have to agree that L pales in comparison to yoo seung ho but it isnt _that_ off putting considering the other cast are also not on yoo seung ho's level. his character is pitiful and i hope he can channel his hate and despair towards the water dept people rather than the naive crown prince.

overall, im still on the fence about this drama. the crown prince will stumble a lot more times before standing tall, but its a bit unbearable to watch him make really, really bad decisions without consulting his wiser peers (e.g. didnt discuss anything with chief commander lee's son ((his teacher and closest friend)) when he gave his seal to lee sun)

If I may speak something in our CP's defence (yes he's very naive and idealistic, which leads to his giving up his jade seal to Lee Sun the peasant - there's no denying to that) but why do I have an impression that the jade will bring more misfortune to Lee Sun the peasant than trouble to the CP. This is just pure speculation on my part and I could be wrong, but the boy's life might be in danger because only the CP is supposed to have the jade in his possession. Still it's a bad decision, just that I don't think Lee Sun peasant boy will take advantage of that seal any time soon.

How perceptive of you, Hye Mi. I absolutely agree with you. Keeping CP's jade seal just puts peasant Lee Sun in danger. Maybe peasant Lee Sun will take advantage of his new status to take revenge for his father and Ga Eun's father, but he wil never backstab the real CP because he is truly touched by the CP's sincerity. It would be boring if peasant Lee Sun become all greedy and malicious.

I think giving the jade to Lee Sun was naive but also within character. Prince Sun obviously felt in debt to Lee Sunand wants to make right what he felt he did so wrong. He somehow stopped the revenge from happening but wants to make sure Lee Sun believed that he'd do everything to solve this issue. The Crown Prince has not seen anything outside of his protected greenhouse and palace. It makes sense for him to be so naive and idealistic. What I'm glad about is that he isn't stupid or rash. He thinks about things rationally and while he doesn't make the right decisions all the time, I think he's intelligent enough to learn from his mistakes and do better the next time around.

As for Hwa-gun, I thought the reason she got the Prince caught and then misled everyone was so she can find him. She didn't know where he was so she wanted someone to do the job but only for her benefit. She's an absolute psycho but I want to see her sacrifice her family for love as was promised. If she really is "in love" with the Prince, then I want to see her understand the dangers of what she's doing. That doesn't seem likely though, because the girl is a bit of a nut job who only ever wants what she wants. Consequences be damned.

The giving of his seal to the peasant Lee Sun is indeed a bad decision on his part. Even Commander Lee's son advised him against it, but it would make for more hijinks to occur in the future, especially when they were cornered in the last scene. I suppose the rival faction would take the peasant Lee Sun away, believing he is the real prince, as opposed to the masked CP, thinking he is the fake.

Dang, the cliff hanger!

I thought to myself “Why did Prince Sun don his mask before fleeing?” Wouldn’t that make him a huge target? Then I realized the mask is supposed to identify him as the crown prince and protect him, not make him a target. Only problem is that he has always been the target for the damned Pyunsoohwe.

I am glad the Crown Prince displayed more of his immaturity and how sheltered he has been all his life. This can only mean more room for growth. It’s going to be one heck of a steep learning curve though going by how much he has gone through in just one venture out of the palace.

Ga Eun being charmed by the crown prince and fangirling in front of Prince Sun(unknown to her of course!) is nothing new in saeguks like this. However, in this story there’s a difference from others. Prince Sun has never received adulation from anyone other than his parents and a rare friend in [bodyguard]. Everyone is sure he’s a leper or maybe worse. Now that the admiration came from a girl who he obviously likes, it’s even more meaningful.

L surprised me in this episode. Of course, my expectations have been lowered by what I’ve read of him. I can’t say I’m blown away but he did a good job here. His scenes in these episodes weren’t easy and the PD didn’t make it easier. I have seen PDs who can make a mediocre actor look good but this wasn’t the case. In fact, I didn’t quite like the directing in the scene where Peasant Sun fought with Prince Sun when the latter stopped him from taking revenge. Luckily, L pulled off very decent acting here.

The one who gets my goat and increasing so is Hwa Goon. Is it bad that she’s already driving me nuts? Did she engineer the whole ‘catch the water thief’ thing just to get a glimpse of her crush? I hated it whenever she smiled at the sight of that mark she put on the prince’s neck. Why can’t the darn thing crust and fall off? Or is it like a tattoo?
I agree with hanshimi's analysis of So Hee's acting. She is confusing me, I can't figure out her character. I got a feeling it's going to get worse.

Pyunsoohwe reminds me of the Freemasons or rather the movies which have them as the secret power behind the King or government. Is it a coincidence that the Pyunsoohwe are made up of architects and engineers?

I admire Prince Sun's principles about mercy and kindness. His ways are on the reckless side for now, but I understand him. He lived a very sheltered. He never once had the opportunity to actually do something for he has always been hidden away from the world. With his momentary freedom and having been just acquainted with the dire realities of his people, his ideal mindset of setting things right and using his position as the crown prince pushed him to action without thinking of the situation he just entered and the consequences of his meddling.

This is why I was glad that he took away a realization from the death of Lee Sun's father. He realized his rash actions could harm those he want to protect dearly. I hope he gathers enough people on his side and tread the war against Pyunsoohwe with wit and care to avoid more collateral damage. Oh who am I kidding? I can already see more deaths a mile away and oh the tears I'll be shedding.

Hi outofthisworld :D,
On CP's immaturity: Like you, I actually appreciate that the show lays bare his naivety and immaturity. It is very consistent with his upbringing and also the fact that he has been literally isolated from the rest of the world, save only a few who have seen his face and even fewer who have been actually close enough to know who he really is as a person. His talking to his mask in the previous eps and his commenting on how pleasant it is to talk to people in these eps testify to this. YSH makes these characteristics so believable and palpable, while sympathy rather than annoyance inducing.

On Hwa Goon and the mark on CP's neck: I agree with hanshimi (who has written an excellent observation of So-Hee's acting imho) and with you. I actually think Hwa Goon is too complex a character for So Hee to interpret and portray. Up until now, compared to KSH's Ga Eun, her character is supposed to have more room to showcase its interwoven identities: a spoiled lady and a sheltered, self-centred girl who is for the first time obsessed with a man and would do anything just to have him within her sight, but I find her portrayal very conflicting and hard to pin down. If anyone here has watched Queen of the Ring and seen her performance at the very beginning of ep 3, where there is a similar-ish scene to the market place scene in ep 4, they will find her acting almost exactly the same. I personally don't think So-Hee is ready for this role yet, and I fear for the worst in later episodes. Too bad since I kind of like dark and layered characters, and there have been abundant opportunities for her to outshine KSH, whose character has been rather typical up to this point and has not allowed enough room for KSH to show her full potential.

I really liked that they showed the CP messing up pretty badly in this episode rather than actually saving the day. His heart is in the right place, but since he rushed in to try to fix things without first understanding the situation, he ended up making things worse (possibly much worse, if his order to GE's father leads to his death as well). That is a rude awakening for him, especially once he finds out about the Pyunsoohwe and the fact that his father is involved with them. I'm looking forward to see him learn and grow stronger from this experience.

Of course, the king is also at fault for keeping the CP in the dark. Now that the PSH is targeting the CP, his ignorance doesn't "protect" him, it just makes him more vulnerable. Same for Woo Bo, honestly. Why is he posing riddles rather than explaining? If someone had just told the CP about the PSH, the tragedy would have been prevented.

Thank you for the recap! I found your comments wonderful! I found the first two episodes a little boring though I guess it's because they're setting up the story, but with episode 3-4 I am finding myself invested, especially for the three main characters' stories. I wish I am also invested in Hwagun too, but like others, for now I can't feel anything but annoyance for her. I really wish her character will surprise me later with her growth (hopefully, there will be growth). I wish I could see the main three friendship grows more before all the angst, because I found them wonderful together, but I guess that might become boring.

I was wondering how Peasant Sun will end up becoming a fake king, but now I can guess how the story is going to be. I hope that he won't become an antagonist like how lots of people guess, because I want him and Prince Sun to be allies, but either way it will still be interesting how their story will play out.

I like how Prince Sun is so sheltered, just like how the bodyguard said, it made him looked foolish. But I found that endearing, and he has a lot of hearts and no doubt he will be a good ruler. Yoo Seungho is really doing a good job portraying a prince who have only found out how cruel the world can be, I am looking forward to Prince Sun growth and how he will battle it out with Pyeosoohwe.

Me too! I want the two suns to be friends, not enemies. Instead of being a villain, I think it will be more interesting if peasant sun gets jealous of prince sun initially because of what he cannot have(i.e ga eun's affection, the power/title) but still ends up helping him because he is touched by prince's sincerity.

Yes! That will be a wonderful character development and unexpected in a way since the trope of a good character becoming an antagonist because of jealousy and greed is already common and I find it uninteresting after watching so many dramas.

Yoo Seungho is doing an amazing job. It's no surprise, but I have not seen him in quite some time on the small screen, so his awesomeness just came at me like a strong wind.

Weird because I like seeing him wear the mask as much as I'd like to see his handsome face. There's something magnetic about not seeing his whole face and just his expressive eyes. I feel him, both his loneliness for having lived a sheltered life and his giddiness upon meeting new people and exploring the town.

Kim Sohyun is also amazing. She breathes elegance and class, but without air. For now, she's the sweet and caring (and at times annoyed at Prince Sun in a cute way of course hehe!) Lady Han and I cannot wait to see how she'll turn into a revenge-seeking woman when her father dies in the hands of the masked prince.

L is a wonderful surprise. He' still green, but I'm just glad he's not awkward in this drama. In fact, his scenes were so touching and he pulled through. I hope he continues to do well throughout the series. Heo Joonho is da bomb. He has a very strong presence and I just love how they styled him, hair and clothes.

This show really picked up well after the first and second episodes. I just have to say though, is it just me, or is Kim So Hyun and Yoo Seung Ho the cutest couple ever. I love their moments together on screen and their cute little banters. When Prince Sun came in to save other Sun's father, I really had to applaud him. And then, came the moment where other Sun's father died. It was an unhappy moment but Prince Sun did confess it was his fault while showing his identity to the other Sun. I hope their relationship improves despite the fact that the other Sun will have to take over the Prince's identity for his safety. Overall, a good impression. I also loved the mask idea. It was very unique and totally added more mysteriousness to the show as a whole although we know who is wearing it. Fans herself :)

While I am enjoying Yoo Seung-ho, I am still not emotionally attached to his character just yet. Thank you so much for the recap, @hanshimi. Your recap took my breath away. I love how you analysed everything to the minute detail, something that I couldn't do if I tried. LOL. I loved how you said that the superficial tools of identity (such as the mask and the emblem) and not Prince Sun himself, who holds the actual, royal power!
It's actually very sad that without these Prince Sun wouldn't be able to prove his status to the people of Joseon as no one has seen his face without a mask on.

This episode as a whole was just everything I ever wanted and needed from the show (minus Hwa-goon, who, sighhhhh). I especially loved how quickly the prince is forming relationships with the people in the village. Whether it be love for Ga-eun, respect for her dad, friendship with Choon-woon (who hasn't even seen his face), a bewildered but grudging respect for Woo bo and a frenemy banter with Peasant Lee Sun.

Here's to hoping that some of these ties remain strong till the end. Even if that's impossible to hope for because of the upcoming storm...

SBS and MBC decided to split one episode into 2 to make way for commercial break in the middle. Therefore, the episode count per day is now 2, which makes 4 episodes per week. Therefore, an originally planned 20-episode drama becomes 40 episodes.

Thank You Hanshimi for the wonderful, deep insights. Your emphasis to the symbolisms makes me look into the shows' rationales clearly.

I want to share how I much I appreciate the show's OST.
The Part1 - Because A Man Couldn't Cry by Yoseob (the only one which was officially released so far) I find it unapt as a BGM during Hwa Goon's scenes because the lyrics fit more in the latter development of the main leads' love struggle when their unfortunate situation doesn't let them be together. The song is so sad. I can't imagine how it'll break my heart hundredfold if this song is playing during Ga Eun and Prince Sun 's tearful, heartbreaking moments. I understand if they just intended to introduce it to us and will still put it into use later.

We also got a sneak peak of 3 more songs..

By Lovelyz - Ep2, during Prince Sun's wandering in the market. I'm loving this one, it sounds so soft. and soothing.

By BolBBalgan4 - Ep3, Fireflies scene. It is more upbeat. Although it sounds modern, I enjoy the youthful and 'falling in love' vibe it gives off during the scene.

By Hwang Chi Yeol - Ep4 during closing credits. This is my favorite.
I don't know if Chi Yeol's voice just plainly add wonders to the song or just because it sounds the most 'sageuk' among all.
I fell inlove with his version of Because I Miss You (MDBC) It seems like he took me to a different field of feels. It is a lot more deeper and heartfelt. His approach is unique and so I'm looking forward how this one would be.

Be right back for more comments.

Agree K-drama OSTs are awesome. In some cases I love the soundtracks of dramas that I didn't even watch eg Chuno, Emperor of the Sea, Damo. Really hoping for sustained good quality and ratings of "Ruler" as often the success of an OST in the charts is dependent on the buzz generated by the drama it is featured on. One of my favourite Hwang Chi Yeul songs is from "The Great Seer" (2012) and if anyone hasn't heard "Sky Road" before, may I recommend you check it out on Youtube, if interested. :)

I'll make sure to check it out! HCY just earned a fan in me.

@joyee Glad to read your post below ... I am so excited that HCY will be holding a mini-concert in Singapore in two weeks' time (28 May)- this is the first time I'll be able to watch him live. Also there's a high possibility he's appearing in today's instalment of King of Masked Singer - I'll be watching it to see if the rumour is true :)

Thanks for the recap, hanshimi!

I love Prince Sun and GE's first encounter and how she immediately helps him. The prince has quite a personality despite living in seclusion all these years. XD His "I'm someone who can do that" line makes me laugh.

I love WB already!! Looking forward to a great mentor-mentee relationship between him and the prince. WB can challenge Prince Sun's thinking and break down his naïveté.

Love how the prince isn't shy about being enamoured by GE. Their gazes are sweet.

Hahaha! The crown prince who can't out himself as the prince and opted to state he's the friend... That ain't gonna have any weight to get you that water. =P I like the actual friend CW. I'm curious how they developed a friendship all these years without CW seeing Sun's real face.

I like WB's dragon scale analogy. Trust him to knock some sense into the sheltered prince! Sun really does need to know more about the outside world and political powers if he were to truly protect his people. I'm sure WB already clued in to Sun's identity when he first met him.

LOL Sun is so shameless asking for chicken since he's a guest at GE's house. ^.~ And he is so bold at expressing his interest in GE, getting straight to the point by asking whether she's already taken. XD Love this prince! I also enjoy their heart-to-heart talk about hidden identity and freedom with the chicken and coop reference

It's great that GE's dad is another person imparting wisdom so that the prince isn't gonna be living in his own innocent, ideal bubble when it comes to justice and citizens. I love the meal sharing moment.

Hahaha! Love CW! He sure doesn't sweet talk to the prince and tells it like it is.

It was great to see the prince using his weight to free Lee Sun's dad, but it seems to have gone too smoothly and he is basically making it easier for those evil Pyunsoohwe people to track him down.

Felt so satisfied to see Sun passing right by HG to head straight to GE. I can't stand seeing HG in any scene, I hate her attitude and behaviours since she caused all the trouble, and I doubt this will change anytime soon. I also hate the fact that she knows Sun's face and can identify him based on her pricking. This gives her way too much leverage. Argh!

So heartbreaking to see Lee Sun's father's short-lived joy... =( I quite liked him and wanted to see more father-son interactions. The prince had inadvertently brought him harm with his good intentions to carry out justice. >.< This would definitely the first of many lessons.

Awww The prince definitely doesn't shy away from his feelings with that "forever" line. I can already anticipate the heartwrenching moments in store for this couple.

Sun definitely had a wake-up call upon learning Lee Sun's father's death. And perhaps he needs this kind of hard blow to learn things quickly and solidify his desire to do something about it. I love that he already views Lee Sun as his friend and...

I love that he already views Lee Sun as his friend and that's why he's trying to prevent him from seeking revenge, even risking his life by divulging his identity. I can really feel his pain and how deeply regretful he is to interfere with the trial.

Oh dang! Sun passing his jade emblem to Lee Sun is just inviting trouble. This will likely spark the identity switching later and the ensuing conflict.

Overall, I'm much happier with these two ep's and I can't wait to see more!! YSH rocks!!

Same! I like how every person he met outside the palace, be it Ga Eun's father, Ga Eun herself, Lee Sun, Lee Sun father's death and Woo Bo. Everyone gives him something he can contemplate about.

Agree with Woo Bo and Crown Prince's growing mentor-mentee relationship.

Woo Bo is like a caring father giving his son a harsh scolding to open up his mind that nothing will go on his way if he act as reckless as he is. Better to stay behind the mask and stand protected if he'll just wander around and declare that he'll protect his people but just end up putting them in danger.
I wanted to see more of it. How he will be one of the crown prince's strong supporter and reliable guide which his father, the king, couldn't become.

Yes, I like how that's been portrayed so far. The prince doesn't act all high and mighty, and he's very teachable. So, I'm glad to see how Sun is absorbing all this knowledge from the encounters.

So true. If the prince doesn't know how to do things properly and will just do things blindly, he's just gonna cause more damage than carrying out his true intentions. Better observe and learn, then he can battle in wits and take effective action to protect his people. WB will definitely take on a significant role and I hope to see him back at the palace with Sun later.

There's not much to talk about Ga Eun's character so far but I'm really interested to how this reserved, pure girl become a revengeful and feisty woman. I'm sure our attention will be directed to her later on, making us shake off any short comings our second female have.

Speaking of Hwa Gun, 4episodes (technically, 2 ep) and there's already alot of confusion regarding what her character is supposed to be.

She needs a major character development if she'll later on side with the good after all the unforgivable selfish actions this episode. She's not evil but her ways to get the things she wanted is certainly not right. And it is very worrying.

It looks like the water bureau already overlook father lee sun's case of stealing water but then Hwa Gun interfered leading to his pitiful death.

The CP's dangerous situation also boiled down to Hwa Goon's desire to confirm that the marked man she met is 'her crown prince' pfffft.
Is she really that clueless that his granpa is a threat to the Prince? We doesn't know how Dae Mok will react once Prince Sun declines to be part their org.
Oh well, like @Hye Mi mentioned, maybe she's just plainly... gleeful.
Come on So Hee, give us some depth :(

Hwa Goon really gets on my nerve. She is not only bratty but also cruel. I mean, putting someone's life (peasant Lee Sun's father) in risk just to find her crush and wouldn't care less about what happen to him next. I know that you come from the biggest chaebol of the country, but this is way too much. How could you possibly think that the crown prince would fall for someone like you?!

I hope that later in the show, she falls for the true peasant Lee Sun (when he wears a mask to stand in for the crown prince) instead, and and later on find out that that the smart "crown prince" that she loves is in fact a low born commoner, and she is the one that must take resposibility for his father's death (Maybe you didn't mean it, but it's your fault anyway, poor girl). She will feel deep remorse but never get the boy. It serves her right LOL. We couldn't marry someone who caused daddy's death, could we?

Am I the only one who wishes her to pair up with her grandpa's bodyguard? The guy named Gon or something? Given how she's fixated on CP and already known his face and even marked him with her dagger I don't think she will let go of him easily :'(
Lee Sun is a pitiful man and I wish for him a better ending than Hwa Goon actually :'(

Lol, then Ga-eun can't marry Prince Sun because he might indirectly cause her father's death too. I don't really care for Hwa-gun to fall for Lee Sun personally, although to save ourselves from a love triangle, that might be a great idea! But I just hope firstly, that we get more clear on what her character's deal is, what her personality is and what she really thinks.

Then I want her to help the Real Crown Prince and hopefully backstab her grandfather like they promised.

I just watched this yesterday (yay! In time for the recap!). It was because of kim so hyun that I checked this out as i haven't seen yoon seung ho in anythig yet. But, damn, I am staying for him. I could totally believe that he is a crown prince and even his voice is amazing! Kim so hyun looks regal even in the simplest of hanboks! Now, that two people have seen our prince's face face and know his identity, I am worried about how they are going to use that knowledge.

Also, I didn't know pricks leave marks? It pisses me off that the second lead can recognize him even with his mask on. Thank you hanshimi for the wonderful recap and your thorough analysis of the show. Looking forward to both the show and your recaps.

You should check out Yoo Seung Ho. He, Yeo Jin Goo and Lee Hyun Woo are the actor i root for. Becoz they are so good. Little lacking in height department compared to 180 cm model turned actors. But they are so good in acting.

I'm so excited for the next episodes. Please be good until the end.

The crown prince's outside the palace journey is his first progress to his path toward becoming a great king.
We already saw his determination and courage to go out of this sheltered life and find the answers on his own when everyone around him refused to tell him the truth. What we need to witness now is how he'll react after he see the bigger picture and if he has the wit and strength to overcome the big bad guys.So far, what we see is a naive, idealistic Prince

Lee Sun's father death could be his a stimulus. He is slowly realizing that the fight won't be as easy as walking in, declare he's the crown prince and everything will already go on his way.

This painful realization is very evident to that scene with L. My ghad Yoo Seung Ho, those eyes speak words.

With regards to Peasant L, That's a utter heartbreak.
I understand he blame the crown prince and might hold some resentment towards him but I hope despite how things ended to his father's unjustful death, he later on remember how the Prince tried his best to help him in any way he can either whether he's dressed as a commoner or as a prince.

I can see how L is giving his best for this and I adore him for that. The disbelief, pain and anger all registered to me when he was hugging his father's lifeless hanging body. My only complain is just he has this tendency to over react -- his I want revenge scene with seung ho -- but I like how Seung Ho's eye acting balance the intensity of it.
Kim Myung Soo, I'll be cheering for you! Please don't disappoint ☺

Poor Lee Sun and his father being the collateral damage in all of this political fight. It's just sad that human lives only amounted to that during ancient times. I'm very curious about how Lee Sun will grow ambitious later on and whether or not he will have anything to do with the group run by HG's grandfather (as in: whether he will sell his soul for them, or whether his ambition only originates from his despair and love). That is one thing that I don't think is predictable from what we've seen so far. The only thing I can predict is some sort of mistaken identities resulted from the jade emblem changing hands.

You know, I think the way Prince Lee is protecting Peasant Lee there at the end is going to make the bad guys think he's a bodyguard.

Exactly. They might think they switched clothes and once they see the jade emblem, its enough as a confirmation.

But I'm really a thinking when will the royal guards arrive? Its the crown Prince, they should act quickly ?

Thanks for the recap.

Very few people has commented about Woo-bo. I guess he's going to be a KEY factor in the battle against Pyunsoohwe, because right now he's the only one matching Dae-mok high intelligence.

About Hwan-goon, I'm afraid involving Lee-sun father for her own interest is not her last psycho idea. If, as announced, the maskered Crown Prince (real or fake) is going to kill Ga-eun father, I bet than will be 100% Hwan-goon plan to make them apart. Nasty girl!

The prince is still an amateur, he can weild authority & has good motives but lacks experience & farsight. Maybe there will be more tragedies in order for him to grow up, which agh!
& hwa goon is super crazy/creepy . enough said.

My next show to watch after Radiant Office. Glad to see Yoo Seung Ho and Kim So hyun in the same drama for a longer length. Sparks are flying there.

It has been just a couple of episodes so I will take my time to enjoy the flow of the drama. Good thing that the writers based this strictly on historical fiction and not using real life Joseon King names. Good thing the recapper highlighted this in the ep1 recap. Thanks for the info, great tidbit for an international viewer.

I find the episodes flat sometimes maybe because of lack of background music.

I still love the leads and will continue watching it to the end.

I'm a fan of both Seung Ho and So Hyun, so I want this show to be the most perfect. I was so nervous when people kept talking about L's lack of acting experience while I have never watched him in anything before. But from what I saw from 4 episodes, I thin he's doing a good job.

Peasant Lee Sun is low born but super intelligent. He' s quick tempered yet a young man with self respect. I can feel his frustration about his social status from L's low husky voice. That's peasant Lee Sun that he portraits so far.

Hello everyone, I'm new here ! I've waited so long for this drama to begin, I love Kim So Hyun and have never watched any of Yoo Seung Ho's dramas before, but from what I've seen in the first episodes he is a really talented young actor. I can't help but think about Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, which was a good drama that a lot of people loved but was way too bubbly and cutesy for my taste, I hope Ruler strays away from that route and brings us angst and cliffhangers !

I'm glad that at least someone agrees with me here :-D I stayed for Park Bo Gum's handsome face, but I got quickly bored because of the cutesy thing ... I hope Ruler won't be afraid of making "Peasant" Sun turn bad and I hope that Ga Eun will really seek revenge and not like throw threats to kill the prince and then just sit there, crying, doing nothing and being the damsel in distress like in so many other dramas !

Yeah! I want Ga Eun to kick ass. "bubbly and cutesy" is not my cup of tea, too. Speaking of MDBC, I tried my best to finish it because of Park Bo Gum, but I couldn't help getting bored with its cheesy & plain storyline.

@Ek Ladhki Thi is Kim Eun-sooks no 1 fan I so agree! And why pray is it fine for Prince Sun and Ga-eun to find instant (mutual?) attraction but NOT for Hwa-goon? I can sympathise with disliking the character since she is in the Pyunsoohwe, Dae-mok camp. In the first episode I read her disinterest in becoming suitor to Prince as perfectly understandable. On the one hand it is common knowledge the Prince has a facial disfigurement due to a disease (perhaps leprosy) and on the other she is already high born and wealthy. Her curiosity and feisty temperament then leads her to the acidental discovery that 'this' is a fiction: that the prince is in reality handsome - and her amour is provoked. So far she comes out at least equal in interest to the lovely Ga-eun in my book!
