The K2: Episode 2
by gummimochi
Running a tight ship at home will prove difficult when unexpected attention forces our crafty politician’s wife’s hand; she’ll have to choose whether to keep the danger close or let it roam freely in the streets. And escaping handcuffs and evading the authorities is all in a day’s work for the former mercenary, but Je-ha will realize that living in hiding will no longer be an option when that lifestyle endangers the lives of innocent people.
EPISODE 2 RECAP
As Anna stands paralyzed in the street, the flickering headlights remind her of when she had arrived at the police station following her mother’s death and had been bombarded by the bright camera flashes from the press.
She had undergone questioning, where the psychiatrist had tried to coax an answer out of her. The detective had been frustrated when she’d said she didn’t know what happened, though the flashback within this flashback gives us a bit more insight: At her mother’s silent insistence, Anna had placed the bottle of sleeping pills in her mother’s outstretched hand.
She had peed herself remembering that, and tears had streamed down her cheek as she’d cried over and over again: “I killed my mother.”
Back to present-day where one of car’s passengers, a fashion designer, sees Anna and declares her his new muse. Er, never mind the fact that she’s standing there petrified.
Trembling, Anna says repeatedly in Spanish: “I did not kill.” A granny who leads her off the street is taken aback at the phrase, and Anna hobbles down the sidewalk, alone.
Je-ha gets off at a bus station where he spots the police. So he heads to the bathroom and swipes a soldier’s uniform in order to blend in and exit without suspicion.
Even in Yoo-jin’s gentle voice, her disappointment in the JSS for letting one man slip through their fingers is clear. She’s amused by the head of JSS’ pleas for a bit more time, since the banner hanger could’ve gone to the press or struck a deal with a rival candidate.
Chief Joo, however, disagrees with his superior, believing that capturing Je-ha will be virtually impossible. He had been present during Je-ha’s training, thus can say with certainty that his abilities are beyond the JSS’ capabilities. Yoo-jin chuckles, “So you’re saying the JSS isn’t incompetent, but that he’s good?”
After being dismissed from the Special Forces, Chief Joo explains how Je-ha had belonged to an elite private military company named Blackstone. He had also fought in Iraq as a mercenary, but he’s currently on the run, so there’s no way someone would’ve enlisted his services.
Everyone in Blackstone is a wanted man, and while the rumors say those men fell into the hands of terrorist groups, Chief Joo can confirm that one of them—Je-ha—-is currently in Korea. But all that information doesn’t change the resolution—that JSS is unable to handle the job.
All of their appeals fall on deaf ears, including Chief Joo’s suggestion of recruiting Je-ha. To that, she instructs Chief Joo to do a better job of protecting her husband.
As Yoo-jin watches her husband leave, she muses on how he’s not the least bit apologetic. She scoffs at the idea that she’d feel let down in times like these, and her right-hand woman, Secretary Kim, assures her that she’ll take care of Je-ha.
There is, however, one other matter that demands Yoo-jin’s attention: although Anna was caught last night, her picture has gone viral on social media. The uploader is a well-known fashion designer, but Secretary Kim will do her best to prevent it from making headlines. Isn’t it a little late for that in this day and age?
Yoo-jin would agree, roaring that all of Europe would want to know who Anna is if the designer gets a hold of her. She swears she hears noises again (oh?), and when Secretary Kim suggests that they use this opportunity to do away with Anna for good, Yoo-jin shuts down the idea: “Anna is the only tool I can use to control Se-joon! Do you think Jang Se-joon would stand for it if anything were to happen to her?!”
Yoo-jin has a sudden breakthrough: perhaps it will be better if Anna is transported to Korea, where she can keep an eye on her. With the presidential election just around the corner, she has better things to worry about than her own nerves and orders Secretary Kim to get it done.
Once she’s alone, Yoo-jin gets a good look at the photo of Anna and remarks, “They resemble one another.”
Se-joon has his men pull off to a quiet location so he can speak with Chief Joo in private. He knows that Anna is safe and still has social phobia, but he can’t go to see her because of the upcoming election, and even he knows that makes him a pathetic dad. He knows that Chief Joo is loyal to his wife “but I’m the one who will become president.”
He’ll be the one to appoint Chief Joo as his head of security once he’s sworn in, so that makes Chief Joo the only one he can trust to look out for Anna. He knows how much Anna must resent him, but she’s the only reason he’s yielded to Yoo-jin’s demands all these years.
He orders Chief Joo to relay a warning: Should the hostage (Anna) die, the one holding her hostage will die too. In other words, if anything were to happen to his daughter, everything Yoo-jin has worked toward will crumble. Chief Joo swears to protect Anna, no matter what.
Time to quickly check in with Je-ha, who is unable to hitch a ride, so he helps an old couple stranded on the side of the road. He offers to help with the farmwork, but the old man angrily refuses—he’ll put Je-ha up for one night, and that’s that.
Meanwhile, the head of JSS pays a visit to a police commissioner to help him find Je-ha. He has some valuable information in exchange for his services: At present, Se-joon doesn’t have much of a chance to win the presidential race because he’s running as an independent party candidate; however, he’ll soon be changing parties.
That grabs the police commissioner’s attention, and it’ll be in his best interest to help him out.
Anna flies first-class on her flight to Seoul, and when the flight attendant worries that she’s been asleep too long, her neighbor explains that she’s recovering from a wild night. Turns out that Anna has been drugged, as the camera pans to the syringe beneath the seat.
She dreams of the day when a woman with red fingernails came to collect her from the hospital and take her to the airport. She’d been told her father was waiting for her, but Anna called out the woman on the lie, refusing to drink the bottle given to her. Omo, it’s Secretary Kim, who flashes a camera in Anna’s face.
We know what happened from there, and a lone tear rolls down Anna’s cheek.
Je-ha can hear the old man’s wife sobbing behind closed doors. As for the grumpy grandpa, he sets out a simple meal for him, apologizing that this is all they have and for lashing out on him earlier.
After hours of searching, the JSS team pinpoints Je-ha’s location at a bus station earlier that morning. Anna isn’t the only ones having troubled dreams of the past, as Je-ha dreams of his days when he was a mercenary.
His group had been forced to walk through a minefield, and upon hearing that they needed to take a detour to avoid a civilian zone, the wounded civilian in their party offered to pay the mercenaries triple the amount of their original offer.
He had chosen to keep moving, but soon they’d been caught in a crossfire. Je-ha tosses and turns in his sleep as the memory becomes more violent, and a bullet pierces through his chest.
Je-ha wakes up with a start, but the memory is still vivid, as we see him fall to the ground and slip into unconsciousness. He curls up and breathes heavily until the panic subsides. It’s at that moment he hears the old lady’s sobs once more and finds her husband up drinking.
The old man explains that today is the 49th day following their son’s death, and they’d been traveling back from the temple when they’d ran into Je-ha. He follows the grieving old man to the fields, and agrees to help him clear all the overgrown trees the deceased son had previously taken care of.
He’s already out in the fields when the old man wakes up the following morning, but instead of cutting down the trees, he’s busy trimming the brush underneath them. Touched, the old man joins him, and his wife tears up seeing the two men happily working together.
When they sit down for lunch, the old lady places some food over Je-ha’s bowl of rice. Aw, that affectionate gesture always gets me. He’s welcome to stay longer if he’d like, and he graciously accepts the clothes once worn by the old couple’s son.
He takes the truck later that day to run a quick errand, unaware of the mystery car he passes on the road. Uh oh. He’s immediately suspicious when the car is still there upon his return. Next thing we know, the couple is tied up and claims that Je-ha is long gone.
So the assailant pours flammable liquid over the couple and the house. Just as he’s about to set the entire place ablaze, Je-ha shuts the lighter and kicks the man away. His opponent unsheathes his knife while all Je-ha has is a brushcutter blade wrapped in newspaper.
Je-ha avoids the oncoming swipes including one that narrowly misses his neck. While the man gets in the first cut, Je-ha slices the assailant’s stomach. They go cut for cut until Je-ha throws the man into a pile of jars.
The assailant knocks Je-ha down with a kick, blocks the swipes at him, then engages in a struggle until he knocks the blade out of Je-ha’s hand. He kicks the unarmed Je-ha into a tower of crates, then charges at him with his knife.
Je-ha remains alert, avoiding the jabs long enough to grab the man’s arm and knock the knife out of his hand. A flying kick sends his opponent crashing into the front gate, and the ongoing brawl moves out to the road.
Now this is a throwdown of fisticuffs, and Je-ha uses a counterattack to grab the man’s arm, twirl his body to the ground, and dislocate his shoulder. When the assailant charges at him again, Je-ha twists his jacket around his neck to strangle him. For his finishing move, he spins and breaks the man’s arm. Oh, and kicks him twice for good measure.
Je-ha confronts his attacker when he comes to, asking him who sent him. He isn’t surprised when the man doesn’t give up a name, though the latter says it isn’t personal—it’s all the same for guys in their line of work.
Je-ha shares the same sentiment, as he grabs a hammer to use. Oh shit, are you going to smash his fingers? His attacker says Je-ha’s a dead man anyway, which he agrees with. He understands why the assailant came after him, but it infuriates him that his attacker would dare to harm the old couple.
His attacker laughs at that because that threat was intentional: “All the people who try to help you hide from this point forward will die.” Which means those old people are done for whether Je-ha likes it or not. Unfortunately for him, Je-ha is willing to wait for an answer and gags his attacker so he can start smashing in pseudo silence. Just as he’s about to pound down, his attacker makes a noise.
That’s how Je-ha shows up outside Yoo-jin and Se-joon’s estate later that evening, as a still unconscious Anna is carried inside and wakes up face to face with Yoo-jin.
Pretending to make a delivery, Je-ha does a quick job of taking care of the guards outside. Meanwhile, Anna struggles to rise, her body still trying to wake up from the sedative.
“You’ve become an adult,” Yoo-jin says. “You’re pretty, because you look like your mother.” Anna grits out “devil,” which Yoo-jin points out is no way to speak to her longtime distant caretaker.
“Think of all the things you did to a nine-year-old who knew nothing,” Anna gasps. Yoo-jin acknowledges that those things must’ve upset Anna, though stands firm that everything was for Anna and her father’s sake.
“I remembered everything,” Anna gruffly replies. “Mom didn’t kill herself.” Yoo-jin takes a long pause before reaching out to pet her and pulls in to say Anna should’ve become a nun then.
Yoo-jin supposes that dinner is off the table then and sends Anna upstairs. She helps herself to some wine, and… are those tears I see welling up in her eyes? She drops her glass in shock when Je-ha marches up to her.
But that’s as far as her surprise goes as she can tell that the young handsome man before her is the one she was after. She had no idea that he would come to her, and Je-ha gets straight to the heart of the matter: “Leave me and the people around me alone.”
“And if I don’t?” she asks, smiling. Je-ha replies, “If you don’t, I’ll come and find you, wherever that may be. This first encounter will end with a simple warning, but if I come for you a second time… you will die.”
But Yoo-jin has done her homework on him, thanks to Chief Joo. As her bodyguards rush in, she explains how she learned that men in his line of work are taught to attack the source when they themselves are under attack. His body is lit up with red dots as she says how Je-ha was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time and saw something he shouldn’t have.
Asked if this is how she expresses her love for her cheating husband, Yoo-jin laughs, saying that she envies his naive outlook that she could ever love her husband. While she has his attention, she would like to know why he came back since he could’ve chosen to live the rest of his days as a runaway.
“Because… I can’t let innocent people die because of me,” Je-ha answers. She asks if he means the old farming couple whom he met just yesterday—he would endanger his life to save who she would think were strangers?
People like her who lost a part of themselves a long time ago wouldn’t understand, Je-ha explains. Those who have been in a war zone for too long feel a similar effect, forgetting why they fight altogether. He asks Yoo-jin not to harm the old couple especially because they know nothing about him.
She finds him oddly trustworthy and thus decides to believe him, however: “I don’t think I can let those people live.”
There’s a gun pressed against Je-ha’s temple when he steps toward her, as Yoo-jin makes clear that believing his words and gambling with her own destiny are mutually exclusive concepts.
She finds his warning that she’ll come to regret this amusing, since she believes they won’t ever see each other again.
Her men gag Je-ha, toss him into the back of a van, and tie his feet together. But the approaching sound of sirens interrupt them, as a cop car parks outside to investigate a stolen delivery motorcycle.
Struggling against his handcuffs, Je-ha shuffles over to open a bottle of motor oil and pour it on his wrist to painfully pull it off. A bodyguard checks on him when he hears movement, and Je-ha greets him with a kick to the chest and slams his head against the bumper.
He waits for an opportune moment to knock down the other guard, and all the commotion makes the cops outside suspicious.
Meanwhile, more guards are called to the garage to deal with “the mouse”. Je-ha emerges from above the van and jumps to the adjacent car, taking down one bodyguard with a sweeping kick. We get a 360-degree slo-mo look for his next flying kick and he punches the others.
Just outside, the cops refuse to leave, arguing that they must follow procedure. One cop hilariously thinks that “the mouse” is giving the guards a great deal of trouble, while we cut to what’s going on inside.
There’s another 360-degree shot as Je-ha kicks the bodyguard off the car. That bodyguard shoots him with a taser gun, and the voltage is still in his system when the guard charges at him. Je-ha covers his face with his own jacket, gets in a few more hits in before kneeing his body into the car window.
After unlocking himself, Je-ha grabs a gun and heads inside the house. He catches Yoo-jin on her way down the stairs and lifts the gun to her jaw: “This is the second encounter I was telling you about.”
He cocks the gun and presses it against Yoo-jin’s temple. But they aren’t alone, as a voice behind him softly says, “Shoot.”
It’s Anna, who screams, “Shoot!” Je-ha turns his head and recognizes her from their encounter in Spain months ago. Again, Anna hollers, “Shoot! Shoot!”
COMMENTS
Now that’s what you call an awkward second meeting, though I suppose if we’re counting, it’s more like fourth encounter. Still, it can’t be easy for Je-ha to find himself caught between the woman he’d like to kill and the woman he saved and left behind in a foreign country six months ago. (Although to his small credit, Anna could hardly run ten feet before running into more trouble.)
I may have enjoyed this second episode more than the first since we got to learn so much more about the characters that inhabit this world. There’s Se-joon, whom I didn’t anticipate we’d learn much of this hour. His level of self-awareness honestly caught me by surprise, because he knows his wife controls virtually every facet of his life. He hasn’t fooled himself into thinking that he can break free from that, though his rebelliousness seems to come in the form of infidelity and letting Yoo-jin clean up the mess. He knows he isn’t the best father either, what with his daughter held hostage in Spain. Still, he cares for her and her safety, so I’d imagine he’d have something to say when he finds that Anna is home. If he’ll actually do anything about it is an entirely different matter altogether, but with Yoo-jin at the helm of this ship and his goal of becoming president, he may not have much of a choice at present either.
We also got to find out more of Anna’s past as well; she was a spirited child even after her mother’s death and a wary one when she called out Secretary Kim in the airport. That reveal was a well-played card, since I hadn’t entertained the thought that Secretary Kim has worked for Yoo-jin for as long as she had. Although Anna now claims to have remembered everything, we’re so early in the series that I’m sure that there’s more to the story than her own memories. I’m pleasantly pleased with Yoon-ah’s performance here, especially with the world’s most awkward family reunion with Yoo-jin.
While we’re on the subject of Yoo-jin, I found it interesting that the usually composed woman can also reach a breaking point. What those noises might mean remains to be seen, but that tidbit is something we can keep in mind as the stakes get higher and the situations even more intense.
I didn’t expect myself to be drawn into the side storyline with the farming couple, but their scenes cemented the idea that Je-ha is willing to provide help when it’s needed. Even though he’s still haunted by the battlefield and other traumatic events, he refuses to let innocent people die on his watch. Although Yoo-jin may not fully understand Je-ha’s reasons for protecting who she considers as strangers, he knows that an ounce of compassion goes a long way.

- After watching the first 2 episodes I'm not impressed at all. If it keeps up at that level it's gonna go down like Yong Pal did. Fast paced start and then grasping for air in the end.
- The action scenes aren't really great looking either with all the shaky cams blurring the experience. And they also take away time to actually develop the plot and polish backstory/characterization for the characters.
- The storyline hasn't been able to sweep me up. Yes it's only two episodes and as a writer you don't reveal stuff too soon but I think in this case only hinting at stuff ambiguously (Anna/Yoo Jin/Se Joon) without certainty makes it hard to form an opinion as a viewer on who to root for. Creating suspense with mystery and ambiguity is not the same as skipping necessary information and internal story logic.
- About the acting and performances. It's overall bland and featureless except for Ji Chang Wook and Song Yoon Ah.
1. Why is everybody mentioning Yoona? Her performance is bland and not noteworthy at all. Her scenes have little impact and if she weren't a SNSD member no body would even talk about it.
2. Ji Chang Wook is very good at emoting through his eyes and his change in facial expressions is splendid. The ending scene where he meets with Yoona again and his changing emotions to that encounter were his A-game.
3. The stellar one is Song Yoon Ah. She elevates every scene she is in. And despite being painted as the antagonist has managed to have people being drawn in by her and actually caring about her character. And her chemistry with Ji Chang Wook is killer and the highlight of the episode. Calmness, arrogance and determination all expressed through one short glimmer in her eyes.
- The only thing intriguing me right now is the Je Ha/Yoo Jin dynamic. If they keep developing the show into that direction I will definitely be on for it. Cut the husband and daughter to a minimum because for me they are only there to further Yoo Jin's character ambition and Je Ha's protective instinct. I hope this becomes a political thriller with Je Ha/Yoo Jin in the centre.

This is my instinct too. From the first I heard about the casting, when Song Yoon Ah offered the role after Ji Chang Wook, (even before Yoona, correct me if I'm wrong). I knew that these two will be the focus of the stories.
I hope even the actual romance takes place later on between Yoona and JCW, the main story will not lost focus. I dont mind with a romance, but hope it is just the mild one.
This is my first time actually watching Song Yoon Ah. Her performance is mid blowing. She looks so comfortable and natural in portraying her role, that's why we always need a veteran to do this kind of role.

Song Yoon Ah will mishil this show so hard. She's the standout actress in this. Definitely the Yoon Ah people should be raving about so I believe the comments about the other one are spams by SNSD fans. There's no way 'you're not even a fan of her' then watching this show and proclaim her performance as super stellar and highlight of the show when Ji Chang Wook and Song Yoon Ah are miles above her.

Agree. The action scenes are kind of awful and overdone. This is NOT the Matrix, people. The action there was on a completely different level. This is just very busy camera-work interspersed with awkward slo-mo stuff that doesn't gel and is honestly a bit embarrassing in how much it's trying to copy and failing at big-Hollywood action. And I'm sorry but they need to fire whoever is doing the music, esp. the chanty-stuff during the evil plan-coming-together scenes and the truly horrible grunty track they play in some of the action sequences.
I love JCW and thought he was fabulous in Healer. Really hope they don't ruin his maybe last vehicle before army with this schlock. Very disappointed in first two episodes. Hoping for less bad action and more acting/backstory. And a muzzle on the current soundtrack, yuck.

I appreciate and know that Ji Chang Wook went through hell of training to shoot these action scenes. But I only like action scenes when they're either aesthetically pleasing (Hong Kong action cinema) or used to further the plot or characterization. None of which can be found in the first 2 episodes. It's like the writers decided to fill in as many action scenes as possible to compensate for the lack of storytelling and dialogue.

"But I only like action scenes when they’re either aesthetically pleasing (Hong Kong action cinema) or used to further the plot or characterization."
Totally agree with you about this. While I have no comment about the camera work, and I also think that the action scene are not as aesthetically pleasing as in Hong Kong drama or drama that focus on kungfu.
However, I find the actions in K2 to be quite real, especially with the fighting techniques. In other drama, while the scenes were shot beautifully and elegantly, in many cases, I feel like the actors were just dancing with their body rather than really fighting (i.e. moving their hand and legs really fast in beautiful ways). It looks beautiful, but it does not have much weight and substance. It is the same cases for some action scene in K2 as well, especially when in one-vs-many fights. In one-to-one fight though, most of the technique feel real and believable, and I was really impressed. I practiced Aikido before, and when I watched the fighting scene, I kept thinking: "Yes, that's how you react when someone attacked you with a knife.", "That's how you leverage the person's move to lock their hands", "Wow! He uses his opponents' shirts/jackets to disable them so skillfully". I could even feel the assailant's pain when Je-ha broke his hand, oh man, it must hurt!

I hope Jeha's character development will get better in the next episodes, because while I love every moment JCW on the screen, I still feel like I am just watching Ji Chang Wook playing Je-ha now rather than watching the story of Je-ha.
When I watched Empress Ki or Healer, I forgot that I am watching JCW-the actor, all I saw on the screen was Ta Hwan or Healer. I am still waiting for that day to come with Je-ha's character since I believe JCW could do so much more, especially with emotional scenes.

Yeah I like the action scenes, and this one looks real than some of the action scenes from other dramas I have seen so far. Yes, there are some issues, but that is expected..and I hope they work on that on the future episodes. I dont feel that they have wasted their time and effort for the action scenes coz even if some do not like them, I feel like majority of the viewers loved it..

I am a regular viewer to blockbuster hollywood action movie, and I am certain that even hollywood film maker doesn’t even do their action sequence this way. It’s blatantly boring and jarring. Doing so many action stunts in so many minutes duration doesn’t directly make it appealing. I have to agree that at least K2 have a convincing action stunt. And for korean drama, it is a progress. But to compare it to hollywood action movies is too much. I hope they will make a more logical and convincing sequence next time, rather than focusing to make it look grande and failed in the end. But well, it just begin. Maybe next episode it could be more intertaining that the ground story had already been established.

As opposed to people here, most of the korean public thankfully likes the drama...it gets nothing but praises and the ratings increased so unless the show gets Yongpal'd, he'll be alright :)

Yep. Yoona's expression of remembered shock at the start of this episode is definitely not what I'd proclaim good or even convincing. Especially not if you've seen other actresses deliver the goods - someone like Chae Soo-bin would have sold every last microexpression out of that scene, Yoona isn't even close.

To bad for you that Korean fans demand more IM Yoona because they like her. You might have to see more of her if you watch the drama.
Also Ji Chang-wook and Yoona were/ are promoted as the OTP with magazine shoots, variety shows and live chats together.

I think yoona is good, she looked really desperate and convincing for 2 ep,
she didn't has story for her adult role and her screen is just get drugged, run and being strained, while others already interacting many with other character.
Anna's father also did good for 2 ep,
everyone mention yoona cause they familiar with her than song yoona, just because they mention her, doesn't mean they downplay other actor,
and as I saw more people mention song yoona than yoona here ,
je ha and yoojin dynamic is intriguing but they alreasy fleshed out many for them in the 2nd episode.
imo just because some character haven't got their time doesn't mean their story isn't important,

Thanks gummimochi. It was a good recap of the 2 episodes with enough description of all those action sequences... so many and so long. I'm glad it has balanced out with story in the second episode.
It is hopeful that the characters, although somewhat batty (daughter runs away aimlessly and repeatedly, father is a rebellious playboy, stepma is mentally unsound) are already being portrayed as more than one dimensional.
Se Joon is not just a dumb playboy following his wife's orders but is trying to gain people for himself. Anna is not just a drugged and hopeless victim but does take her opportunities to get out (not necessarily wisely, but least she does something). Soo Jin is not just the normal chaebol using money but a strategist with mental health issues. And Jae Ha can be anything good or not, in a given situation, but he's true to his need to not cause harm to the innocent. There's so much potential for the main characters to develop as they interact, and that will be draw for me... to see how they become better/worse or more mentally sound (get healed? :) ) or fall off the edge.

So I watched episodes 1 and 2, and Song Yoon-ah is blowing my mind. She's the kind of villain who could easily steal the show, because she is just that good - perfect execution of the 'iron fist in a velvet glove' vibes there.
And I hate to go against popular opinion on this one, but the other Yoona is not quite what she should be, though she could get there deeper into the drama. I've defended her acting and her casting in this drama before, but that first scene of her in distress did look a touch laboured and really showing the acting, so to speak. I think she does better when there's a costar around to take the pressure off her, alone she's not quite there yet.

Just watched both episodes. Let's hope Song Yoon Ah is the female lead otherwise this show is going to be boring. She is literally the driving force for the other characters action. It's crazy how dull and uninteresting the other characters become once she isn't interacting with them. If they put the focus on the daughter this will probably get into sappy romance territory. She will be the reason why the bodyguard agrees to work but in the scenes between Song Yoon Ah and Ji Chang Wook the actors showed an understanding and chemistry of their characters together that would explain a certain willingness to collaborate. They don't actually need the daughter as damsel in distress and romantic partner to motivate the main male.

The action (and the epic soundtrack) feels a little bit gratuitous, like something we call "Popcorn movies" here in Germany.
Still better than a slow-moving plot - at least it's entertaining.

Ok, I read most of the comments and everybody keeps mentioning young pal and healer. I have only watched healer but I am not getting any healer vibes here because healer didn't feel dark at all to me. It was like the good vs. evil. And we could distinguish who the good people and the evil people are, from the start.
But this drama, its dark. I am not even sure who to trust at all. I feel like all of them has a back story that we don't know and that story is going to change our perception of them in one way or another. I have never seen kdramas with this type of tone before, so I am quite excited and hope the drama delivers. I am lucky since I feel like I have nothing else to compare it to and I want it to be its own show.

I understand the bias some people here have for JCW but honestly he is the weakest character in this drama so far, his acting honestly leaves a lot to be desired imo.
I actually thought young Yoona did excellent job so far, especially with little she was given to do. You can genuinely feel the despair and franatic confusion from a character in her position. I am most interested in dynamic between tow Yoonas , i feel like there is so much more to explore in their relationship and i wonder will Anna take things in her own hands at some point, i feel like she is the character that will have the biggest personal transformation in the drama.
Song Yoona is fantastic and really the highlight of this drama. I just hope they don't turn her into a cliche crazy villain by the end of this ( there is already hints of that with those voices in her head). I need her to hold her own for as long as possible.
As for Jeha, so far he is the definition of `style over substance.` I hope to see his character have deeper relationship with other characters in the drama, but mostly Anna , i want to see him not just as her savior but also as her ally.

This is the first time I have watched a JCW drama and I have to disagree.
He is very impressive as an actor. I cant believe he did ALL these action scenes by himself with no stunt double, I mean that is crazy dedication.
It really shows that he works hard as an actor to capture the realism of the character because right now, I dont see JCW, I see Jeha.
He also has very very good way of emoting. I dont even need him to talk to know what he is going through because his face and body says it all.
I am interested to see his other work because he is really really really good.

All the idol actors currently working in the dramas need to learn a lot from their seniors and I am sure they will. IU can learn how to emote sadness or pain properly from LJK because whenever she is sad or in pain I can't feel it. As for Yoon-Ah, she can learn a lot of things from SYA and JCW. The main point is that these two are bearable to watch and their acting don't look forced.
Let's hope they will get better with experience.

Here it is:
What I hate about some K-Drama fans is the simple fact that they criticise under the pretense of objectiveness. They all feel so mighty and superior because they watched so many dramas and can surely judge. That is the feeling some commentors here give me. There is no discussion but simply being judgemental because things are not as they like them and god forbid they are challenged to reflect on their own opinions.
The hate towards Yoona by some here is really superficial like we get it, you just love Song Yoona and Ji Chang-wook is your fave Healer but give Yoona a break.
Because I doubt that so many people can be wrong when they are complementing Yonna's performance. Yes, Song Yoona is a great actress but she is not the only one in this drama. Jo Sung-ha is doing a great job as well as the presidential candidate who is not your normal bad daddy.
Yoona will appear more from now on which was stated by the PD himself so you better stop watching if you find her unbearable.

So discuss and give me reasons you think Yoona is acting better or as good as JCW and SYA.
You talk about commenters being defensive but I literally saw no one starting a discussion and challenging the notion that JCW/SYA are better actors than Yoona and certainly reacting angry when done so. Also people said that they didn't like her expressions and lack of eye emotions so it's not just 'I can't stand idols' as you claim.
It's more like kpop fans can't stand it when their bias is being criticized and start whining about 'hate' when db is a site that has discussed dramas and acting before Yoona came along. If you go to other comment section you will also see actors being critisized.

Its one thing to `criticize `but to be purposely oblivious to flaws of one actor and that criticize other character based on your personal preference is not really , what you call, objective.
The fact most of users here have collective girl boner for JCW ,which was evident form the moment this drama started airing, doesn't take away from the fact that despite having most screen time he is showing the least personality in his character . His acting in this is mediocre and honestly Yoona ,with less scenes than him, gave much more engaging performance, even Cho Seung Ha is overshadowing him.
This happens a lot on forums like these, where male actors are given pass for their less than stellar performance, but young female actors are held to this impossible standard where no matter what they do they are not giving good enough performance, which is not true.
Both Yoonas are honestly much better than JCW in these two episodes and both Yoo Jin and Anna much more interesting characters to observe than Jeha.
That said, props to JCW for all those action scenes, he pulled them off nicely.

I seriously hope you don't really believe that people critizice Yoona's acting because they hate that Song Yoon Ah is not young enough to be his love interest and are jealous of Yoona instead. Because that's just sexist and misogynistic.
Acting together is not about age or visuals. It's about good synergy and chemistry which Song Yoon Ah and Ji Chang Wook have tons of together.

It is okay to be biased towards your favorite, but let's not get too delusional.
As someone who was afraid of Yoona accepting this drama bc of her acting, I can tell you she improved. I think she fits her role and she will do a good job. That being said she is not at the same level of some of the other actors. This is not a bad thing. She doesn't have as much acting experience and it will take time for her to tone her craft to the level of the others.
The most impressive in this drama so far is Song Yoona, who is blowing everyone out of the water with her acting. But Ji Chang Wook's acting is on point. Just with his eyes, he is able to convey so many emotions and thoughts. This is not just because I like JCW but bc I watch a lot of dramas and I can distinguish a good actor from an average one. JCW might not be the best actor, but he is certainly a good one. I think my only criticism so far is his first scene in episode one.
I think some fans need to stop being so sensitive and get that most people are not criticizing Yoona's acting bc they dislike her but bc it might take away from their enjoyment of the drama. I personally don't have any problems with her acting so far. She had a lot of hard scenes and she got through them. But for me she is in no way one of the stronger actors on this show so far.
If I were a Yoona fan, I would just be happy with her improvement and how she is challenging herself with a different role. There is no need to bring down other actors just bc most people watching think other actors are doing a better job at acting.

well that's how his character is supposed to be. He is a loner and doesn't open up his heart easily,so of course he has to show subtlety in his expressions and yet they were really nuanced. Also, your opinion about his mediocrity is subjective, not a fact. There are articles of Yoona everywhere that if she will be able to revive her acting career etc etc not of JCW. I agree that Yoona has improved a lot and she deserves the praise. I think JCW is playing his character perfectly and I am sure in the future episodes he will show you how "mediocre" his acting is. :)

Ok you not able to set apart the character and the acting performance. Ji Chang Wook's Je Ho a loner not showing much feelings on the outside. He introvert and that why he 'showing the least personality in his character'. His acting exactly doing that.
While Yoona's character supposed a traumatized person from child age with social disorders. Yet her bland facial expressions and empty eye acting her looking more like a bratty and bitchy school girl. Don't think oh that girl is so crazy anything could happen now when she with Song Yoon Ah. More like a little girl scorned by mother.
Song Yoon Ah miles ahead in scenes together with Yoona and you look only at her. While with Ji Chang Wook you see higher suspense because they play off each other so well and invested in the scenes. Last scene where Ji Chang Wook holding gun against Song Yoon Ah both were outstanding with each other while Yoona like some cartoon villain screaming around.

Interesting characterization of Yoona (the younger one). That's probably one of the flaws that bothers me -- 20 years cooped up in a convent as a hostage is enough to turn anyone into a lunatic. And yet we don't really see that. Nor do we see socialization -- I couldn't really understand her Spanish at all, maybe I needed to listen better, and Spanish is my second best language.
Anyway, that's why I feel that while it's nice to have her the right age for a romantic interest, she's perhaps to old for the plot. 16 to 18 would make more sense. I guess we'll just have to see how socially inept she is in future episodes. Although the girl in the first episode doesn't seem that damaged.

Firstly, I never said Yoona is better than Song Yoona or Ji Chang-wook. What I said was that Yoona is not as bad as some commentors make her out to be. A lot of people say that Yoona has improved and did her job well. But here it seems some people do not want to see it because it ruin their picture of her just being a pretty face and not more.
Secondly, have you ever thought about the music? It is from the opera "Schneewittchen" (Snow White) which is much darker than the fairy tale. There are no seven dwarfs and the piece focuses on the characters relationships. The drama has some similarities in themes so it makes sense.
Lastly, the PD said that Yoona appears less in the beginning and her story will be something that pivotal. So give her time to tell her story and see how it develops.

People don't have to see her earlier works and judge whether she 'improved' or not. They aren't her fans and aren't obligated to follow her works. They are giving their opinion on the recent performance right now that they are watching for their own enjoyment.
And what does improvement matter if people thinks it's still not enough to keep up with Ji Chang Wook and Song Yoon Ah? They think Yoona don't belong to the top actors in this drama. Doesn't mean they blindly 'hate' on her. If she fails to grasp some commenters with her acting that's normal. Even real actors don't have a 100% approval rate for their performances.

I don't need them to think that Yoona is a top actress, I want them to give her a chance beyond episode one and see how her stories goes. Although, dramabeans commentors have always looked down on Yoona's acting, justified or not, and so it became an easy way to simply put her as plain because everyone thinks so since forever.
They don't seem to judge her based on what they see but what everyone has been saying (or writing) about her.

1. I hope you realize that when people criticize or praise someone, it is totally subjective. No one raised their opinion to pretend that they are objective, at least I don't see people doing that in this website.
2. I am a huge JCW fan, a strong supporter for Song Yoon Ah's acting, and I watched K2 mainly for these two. Similar to others, I had worry about YoonA's acting before the show premiered, but I was relieved to find her acting as least passable for the first two episodes. I even think that she delivers quite well in some scenes. I said that in one of my comments, and many other JCW's fan also mentioned the same thoughts in their.
3. Having said that, I respect other people who did not share the same thoughts with me as they found YoonA's acting still lacking. We all have different tastes and expectations. Even when someone criticized JCW's acting, I don't think that they are trying to dish or hate on him. They are just sharing their thoughts, and they have their own reasons to think so.
4. I agree that many people in this site reacts quite strongly when an idol is casted for a lead role, but it is not without reasons. First, they do not react so out of the hate for those idols, but because they have too much love for each drama (that's why people come to this site after all). Second, they do not form prejudice for idols' acting out of nowhere, but base on their experiences in the past. However, I think most people in here are open to change their mind as long as the actor/actress deliver. Barely anyone dish Im Siwan in Misaeng even though he is an idol. Nana is another case. And also the second lead role in MDBC.

We share the same sentiments. While I am
a huge jcw fan, I never felt hate on Yoona, in fact she has impressed me with her acting so far.. Mainly because she has already been bashed before the drama has even started that is why I expected less from her but she is quite decent and I felt her emotions.
In terms of JCW's emotional acting, I think it is unfair for some to judge him by the kind of scenes given to him. Most of his scenes were action scenes and few dialogues with the old couple and few minor characters. Do they expect him to cry a river when talking to the old couple about the loss of their son. I dont think so, that would be so out of his character. I think he did a good job on expressing his emotions on the first episode when he felt guilty of not helping anna , when anna was in the car.. You can see the emotion in his eyes. And his nightmare scene.. His confrontation scene with SYA was executed well IMO, it was subtle, direct and not over the top. I have been watching kdramas for so long that I have to learn to see the richness and depth with subtlety.. With the scene we have seen him so far, I think it's safe to say he has done a pretty good job..

I know what you mean. This morning when I talked with a friend about K2, we realized that there is no cheerful, bubbly character in this drama. Everyone is twisted, everyone has troubled past, everyone has a dark side in them.
Then I realized why I loved Healer so much back then, even though it undoubtedly had its own flaws: although complicated relationships and troubled past with political "complex" were also the theme of Healer, many characters in Healer were full of heart and optimism, especially Young-shin, her father and everyone around her, and that balances out the dark story running behind the show. Not to mention that we have Ajumma, Park Bong-soo and our teacher as well!
K2 on the other hand... I don't know if we got to see more smiles in upcoming episodes (aside from those fake, cold, and calculated smiles of Yoo-jin and Se-joon...)

Song Yoon Ah is gonna be the main female in this drama no matter who is intended as the female lead by the PD and writers. Only 2 episodes so far and she has stolen the attention and interest for her character while leaving everyone behind. Her interplay with Ji Chang Wook was the highlight of the episode despite so little action and small talk.
The last scene where Ji Chang Wook holds the gun against her head and they have that intense staredown. I would have enjoyed it more if they would have ended the episode there because the eye acting and staring was enough to create suspense about whether he will shoot her or not.
Yoona screaming hysterically around totally ruined the flow and seemed totally unfitting considering the subtle acting by Ji Chang Wook and Song Yoon Ah setting the intense mood before. It felt like a little kid throwing a tantrum and didn't increase the tension on Song Yoon Ah's survival at all.

Hello again,
I'm back because of the choir. This time I could make out two lines in different scenes of the second episode. The first plays when secretary Kim brings the little Anna to the airport. It goes like this:
German: Seid inzwischen brav, sperrt die Türe gut zu und nehmt euch in Acht vor dem Wolf!
English: Be good in the meantime, keep the door locked and be careful of the wolf!
It's actually fascinating that you just need three clues to know to which Brothers Grimms Fairy Tale this is pointing: The wolf and the seven young kids. if i were to interpret this I'd say that secretary Kim is the wolf. Just a thought.
The second one is sung when Yoo-jin talks the first time to Anna. When Anna reveals that her mom didn't commit suicide the choir sings:
German: Spieglein, Spieglein an der Wand
English: Mirror, mirror on the wall
Now we know for sure that there are actually Snow White references. And refrences to other Fairy Tales too.
I really freaking love this!
Just a note: The choir sings some lines when Je-ha fights the man in black at the orchard. But because of the fighting sounds it's impossible to understand it.

Oh no, the freaking German choir is back? ? I watched the episode before our discussion so didn't pay attention to the choir (again). So seems like they're going to feature them more often...ok, I'll start listening to the BGM properly from the next episode.

Thanks @ maltreti
This is so intriguing! So the production gives us little clues or plays with us, but these could be totally missed, (criticized and rejected even!!!). It's so good to have a wide range of commenters who can fill in the gaps or point out the hidden 'gems' in a show.
I looked up Grimm's fairy tales and was blown away by there being more than 200 stories!!! While there are several with wolves, I agree that the Wolf and the Seven Little Kids is what the one line sung is referring to.

When Kim Je Ha stole the clothes of a soldier in the bathroom , somehow that scene reminds me of Healer when he was in disguise. I'm so sad when JCW said The K2 would be his last action drama. He must be so exhausted of all the action scenes already. Poor boy! Why don't they get a stuntman to help him out?

Yes, precisely the kind of Healing I'm looking forward to!!
And in a bit of a twist, why can't the 'baddies' get healed too. Like maybe politician dad owns up to his faults and becomes a better dad.
Or wife gets help for her mental health problems.
Fingers-crossed!!

I am not trying to be a party popper, but am I the only one who is yawning in here? I watched all sort of genre. Blockbuster and intense action is not alien to me. And with it, I'm certainly still not buying this kind of jack reacher story with only its two episodes. I might have to wait for the story to reveal its charm to be finally sold. For now, I'd just hang on JCW in sweat to keep my eyes awake.. XD

If you notices, most comments in here mainly focused on the acting of the four leads, the action scenes and JCW's beauty. I also think that the story is not that interesting yet, and still has a lot to develop.
For now, I am most curious about the interaction between Song Yoon Ah and JCW, and that would be enough for me. Also, none of the actor/actress annoys me with their acting yet, so that's another plus.

I am a reguler viewer to blockbuster hollywood action movie, and I am certain that even hollywood film maker doesn't even do their action sequence this way. It's blatantly boring and jarring. Doing so many action stunts in so many minutes duration doesn't directly make it appealing.

Still not sold yet. I have to wait for the next episode to make up my mind or I'll probably continue to watch for SYA who became my fave thanks to her role here.
Im Yoonah's acting is not bad but I sometimes find her cringey, that "No" she screamed on the subway platform in the first episode sounded weird to me.

Certain factors will help in a comment count of 'good' comments which is large in number. What comes to mind is great interaction among the community together with a well made show and good story, with many nice aspects to discuss.
There can also be a big "not so good" comment count (although usually smaller than the highest number of "good" comments).
The high comment count in the Healer threads were, I'm glad to say, of the former variety. We were/are a warm, responsive community and there were so many nuances and nice moments to discover and discuss in that show. There were very few trolls and they were not engaged by the rest. So a peaceful and happy show recap to hang out in.
Until today, new viewers of Healer still drop by to leave a word. :)

I hope K2 can have nice moments to discuss too. ?
I just can't understand why ML got so many comments when it doesn't have anything new to show except stellar acting by LJK.

Honestly believe people in for eye candy and Lee Jun Ki acting. Not want admit that so they make excuses and interpretation for story and characters by stretching out everything despite the just bad writing and directing. Like how defending the sexist action by LJK's character by making up interpretations only they like him.

Hello @GB
I agree with you, it takes a warm, responsive commmunity and many positive nice moments in a show to stir many commenters! I am a proud part of those historic 11,000 comments in Healer! Up here? And give me five ? @Growingbeautifully!
@Riya I hope it does have many commenters, i think K2 will live up to its expectations!

Meh action scenes look like bad mix of Jason Bourne/Matrix and are too long. Accompanied with weird opera music.
Only thing good is Song Yoon Ah and Ji Chang Wook acting and chemistry. The only watchable scenes were with them together. All the others felt like filler scenes with nothing happening.

Yeah the action sequences seem a bit off. It's like they'd prefer flashy dance action choreograph that don't meet realism to actual fighting choreography.

CANT WAIT FOR THE 3RD EPS :(
Yoona's acting improved A LOT!
I really like her expression. Her voice tone sounds depressed, frustated as she endured so many bad things.
JCW's fighting scenes is TOO INTENSE. I keep held my breath because his fighting scenes. I also love the slow motion movement. Super cool!
I also admired how Song Yoona looks very pretty and her acting skill is so awesome!
Hope the rating will rise on the 3rd ep!

Boy, do I have some catching up to do. It's been a while since I've been excited about a show just on recaps. I'll forget most of the story I've read (thanks, years-old brain injury), but I will remember that I was quite excited about the show. Wheeee!

Did anyone else notice that when Je-ha poured motor oil over his hand to try to slip out of the handcuff, he could not do it initially. So he actually broke his left thumb with his other hand, so as to finally slip out of the handcuff. This is also why his left hand was in a cast in episode 3.

As I read your recap last week... I got curious of those noises that Yoo Jin heard when she is so worked up so I tried so surf the web to what can possibly it is... I am not quite sure as it's only my research. Yoo Jin seems like she have Tinnitus... Tinnitus is when you experience ringing or other noises in one or both of your ears. The noise you hear when you have tinnitus isn't caused by an external sound, and other people usually can't hear it. There are various causes but then one stands out and suits Yoo Jin. In my judgement, Yoo Jin have mental problems (as what Chief Kim said) and of course she is taking medications ( possibly antidepressant) and antidepressant can cause Tinnitus. The complications of having Tinnitus is that:
Fatigue
Stress
Sleep problems
Trouble concentrating
Memory problems
Depression
Anxiety and irritability
Headaches
Problems with work and family life
Thank you for taking your time to read my thoughts :') hehe
