The last few weeks I have been watching a lot of the older rom coms and have been really enjoying the experience. At the start of my K drama adventure they were my bread and butter alongside weekend dramas because they were free on KBS World’s YouTube channel.

What makes the older ones more enjoyable is, as pointed out by other Beanies, the tendency to minimise mixing of genres and if they do add anything it is slice of life rather than the current trend of adding thriller elements. It has been a much appreciated diversion as I am struggling to finish romance/slice of life dramas that I was enjoying until the thriller element was introduced. It’s hard to fast forward through these scenes as they are short scenes mixed in with the rest of the story.

It feels like eating fish and coming across a bone which means I am now on bone alert instead of enjoying the meal. In these situations there are multiple options:
stop eating and search for bones remove in one go reheat the food and then enjoy
stop eating and thus miss out on otherwise great food
accept that bones may turn up but treat each mouthful as something that can be enjoyed once inspected for bones.

I used to go for the third approach because I was not missing out on fried fish 🤣 but often the fear of missing a bone and feeling pain or chocking meant it was not as joyful an experience as I would have liked. I have learnt to accept missing fried fish now that I am vegan. My mission is to find the equivalent approach to watching dramas. I really don’t want to miss out on the good because of some minor scenes and tension evoking music.

My current strategies is to watch other dramas alongside. My recent watch alongside list were so good that they led to a pause from watching the original drama. I loved 20th century boy and girl, the film My love, my bride and currently I am enjoying Matrimonial chaos.

Thank you Beanies for sharing these gems and please send more recommendations like these.

Thank you so much for this long list. I am on episode 15 of Matrimonial chaos so the timing is spot on.

I am aware there is a growing list of people feeling this way so hopefully there will be a new trend soon and we will be able to watch rom com/slice of life dramas in peace again.

Yes! I hope someday writers remember that romcom stands for romance and comedy, not drama and thriller.

We need fluffy, sweet, stress-free romcoms.
If you knew how hard I've been watching BLs these days... They're my only hope for cute, fun and stalker/murderer-free romance.

It seems to be a growing trend at least half the romantic dramas on Viki suggestions are BL. Its interesting that BL storylines are dominant. I have only seen GL mentioned in passing within mainstream dramas although I have heard there are more coming out.

0

I don't know how did it happen tbh, this new trend. But I'm loving it.

The only GLs I've seen are a few american dramas or movies. But they'll probably get more popularity now that BLs are trend. I hope so, GLs are fun too.

2

@enriquequierecagar: Thanks for the recom. I hope I can find them in my region!

1

Exactly. I want to see both GL and BL ones. Where are the GL ones? With the BL ones, as @enriquequierecagar knows, I adore TMS and TMS2 despite wanting less angst for the lovely SooJoon and a few other things that I would have changed. I also liked Semantic Error and the Japanese BLs, My love Mix up and to a lesser extent because of the extreme Sundere behaviour of one of the leads, My Beautiful Man.

I had to look up Pinocchio Syndrome to see if it existed in real life because it sounded so ridiculous.

It is specifically noted in the beginning of every episode of drama Pinocchio that this syndrome is completely made up for the show and has no base in reality.

My anger over how 'My Liberation Notes' ended continues to simmer. I'm having trouble letting go. Its not the most egregiously bad K-drama ending of the past year (we'll always have the feckless finale of 'Lovers of the Red Sky') but MLN's ending was just so WRONG that it makes my blood boil. If dramas about making K-dramas are to be believed, the writer is at least expected to have a story arc outline with an end goal in mind. I'm imagining a chalk board in the writer's room with lines tracing interconnecting plot threads, and at the bottom is the line 'Perversely watches ex boyfriend drink himself to death. The end'.

Mediocre dramas that end badly have no effect on me. Good dramas that end badly only perturb me a bit. But great dramas that fail to stick the landing are another matter. Imagine if My Mister had ended with the two leads in a wedding scene. I'm talking that level of misguided ending. Luckily they're few and far between.

It's really important that a drama lives up to its name - from start to finish. How MLN didn't when it had all the ingredients in a consistent and correct mixture for 13⅓ episodes, words fail to describe. Even when some great dramas like MLN failed by the end, I didn't expect MLN to do so. The ending drove me bananas but at the same time enjoyable though a lot of things felt missing.

I recently discovered fan translations of Chinese novels. Or rather, I'd noticed links to them in the comments at MDL for a while, but only recently tried reading one. It reminded me of when I would get sucked into the fanfic world of whatever anime/manga/TV show I was into at the time (Inuyasha!!!)

The website I'm using seems to have mostly Chinese novels, but it does have some Japanese and Korean novels as well. But I'm mainly looking for the novels that dramas are based on, and I'm not finding many of those. Or if I do, the translation has been dropped. Anyone know of where I can find completely translated Korean novels?

I have listened to a few on Audible recently which should mean there are Kindle versions.
Pachinko - Lee Minjin
Kim Jiyoung, born 1982 - Cho Namju

I am not aware of these two being made into dramas or films:
Please look after mother - Shin Kyungsook
If you leave me - Kim Crystal Hana

I'm not sure if adaptations of novels are as common in K-dramas as they are in J- and C-drama. I can think of loads of J-dramas based on novels (e.g. Lady Joker, Na mo Naki Doku, Poison Daughter Holy Mother, Tonbi), but I can't think of a single Korean one. There are loads of webtoon adaptations though (Nevertheless, Sweet Home, DP etc etc) and I think most of these webtoons have been translated into English.

The use of novels seems to be more common in Korean cinema - e.g. Jung Yu-jung's Shoot Me In the Heart and Seven Years of Night; Kim Young-ha's Memoir of a Murderer; Han Kang's The Vegetarian. The English translations of the last two can be found in any decent online bookstore.

Don't know if you're using https://www.novelupdates.com/ but if you are you can filter for Chinese or Korean novels and search by #AdaptedtoDrama tag to find them. Everything from the source novel for The Untamed and Word of Honour to You Are My Glory and Reset can be found here!

I'm on novel updates and wattpad (found Who Rules the World on wattpad). Most of the other sites I've found either focus on non-romance type books, or it's a lot of smut, which I don't read. NU seems to the be hub for novel-based Cdramas based on my limited research.

One thing I did yesterday after making my initial comment was to go through my watch list on MDL, check to see if the drama was based on a novel, then look for that novel on NU. Found a few I hadn't found already that are completely translated and a lot more that look like they were dropped.

You can also try looking up the name of the novel and doing a general web search with the word MTL. A lot of the dropped novels are still fairly readable/ understandable with machine translation.

We're on the same phase. I just googled novels turned into dramas or films for cdramas. I haven't done that for kdramas. I think the latter really go for tv drama or film writers. Reading is a good break from watching.

I don't have enough time to keep up with all the shows I'm watching right now, but I can't stop thinking about movies.

In three months I've only watched 7 movies (I used to watch 20+ movies per month), but I know that if I start watching movies properly again, I'm going to forget about my kdramas for a while and I don't want that, I'm loving everything I'm watching rn. Or worse, I'm going to watch one movie and feel bad for not watching more (yeah, I'm like that. My "watcher" cell is a dramaqueen).

I also want to start drawing and writing poems again, but I have zero inspiration... But nothing of that actually matters because I should be focusing on studying and working, tbh. LOL

Anyway, today is friday so what's really important is to find out if Yu Mi's writer-nim is trolling us and Ba Bi has a real purpose or if his character is just... sad.

I feel you. Having a drama slump or a lack of time in the midst of so many interesting contents airing is one of the worst to happen in a drama year.

Don't worry, inspiration on what to write will always come back. It's taking the backseat for now.
However, I do hope you're studying. Many a time I know I should focus on my studies as well but somehow I lack the inspiration/zeal to do so. Knowing that one has to focus alone as I realized, just doesn't cut it alone.

Tbh, it all depends on how did I wake up. Sometimes I think I should enjoy my vacations, other times I think I should be happy that I don't have a lot to do and should use all my energy working on my project. I know I'm going to suffer next semester if I don't start working on it now. Why am I so damn lazy...
Thank you and I hope you get inspiration too. You can do it! ^^

Asianwiki lists only one prior credit for the writer of one certain show, from 2019. The PD has lots of credits, most recently 2020. So if the writer spent 3 whole years getting the script exactly right, or the PD spent 2 years nailing down the perfect cast I'd call that time well spent 🐋🐋🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳

Or, they may have been in COVID isolation for 2 years.

SK was one of the few places that continued to film during the pandemic to the point where there is a local movie back log of releases (and not being currently released because of big foreign blockbusters like Top Gun Maverick taking most recent ticket sales).

I'm mildly curious whether PDs and especially writers make enough money from one drama or get enough of an advance on the next to keep going through a years-long writing process. My only data point, if it can even be called that, is that in BTLIOF the junior drama-writer FL is offered a sum for her first head writing job that looked like the better part of a year's middle-class income.

I'm the type of person that if I get a weird vibe from a Kdrama actor/actress, then I won't watch their show. Or If they are paired up with someone I enjoy then I painfully watch through ittl. I'm not sure if that's going to make me miss out on some good dramas... I tend to avoid amy show Lee Min-ho is in, even though it's been killing me not to watch legend of the blue sea but for the FL but I can't get myself mentally prepared for it. He's the only actor where I can't just seem to watch his stuff and i've heard his shows are good but I just can't... The next person is Lee Joon-gi, I didnt have a problem with him in moon lovers, that was the only thing i've seen him in. Then i've watched some of the behind the scene clips with him and he gave off a weird vibe to me. So I tried to watch again my life but dropped it and his other shows seem interesting but I can't watch it because of the weird vibes I get.... And theres other people on my list that give off bad vibes but I tolerate them more..

Happy Friday beanies! I’ve been meaning to comment on how much I love actress Jung so-Min as Mu-deok in Alcheny of Souls. She carries the rhythm of the story, perhaps not single-handedly, but her presence keeps me watching. I think she is a heavyweight actress (My Father Is Strange, Because This is my first Time) and look forward to her in more lead roles.

My brother, who occasionally watches K-dramas with me, moments that I’ve turned Korean shows into my sole form of entertainment. It’s true, with the occasional exception of a PBS series. I countered, though, that he almost solely watches sports and if those hours were added up, they would parallel the time I spend on my K-drama viewing . With some quick math, he agreed. Hmmm. Doesn’t much mater, but that’s how that conversation went. Brings me to this thought: what is it that makes K-dramas appealing to me? Why are you drawn to them, beanies?

I like that they are short (compared to American TV's multiple seasons) and are easily binge-watched. I'm also a rom-com junkie but I don't like gratuitous sexual content, so Kdramas fit that bill quite nicely. It absolutely, positively, has NOTHING to do with hot actors. That's my story and I'm sticking to it :P

StacyA, my brother said why don’t K-dramas go on and on and on like soap operas (for years) if they are so loved? And I know there are some that do (and not all K-dramas by far are subbed for the English speaking audience), but I agree with your that shorter Dramas are a draw for me. I know how much time I’m investing. Like watching My Beloved Summer, for example, had so many warm and fuzzy elements with good acting and enough sad backstory to satisfy my desire for a complete drama experience in just 16 short episodes 😂

Initially I wanted subtitled shows so I could focus on the screen rather than my rowing machine letting me know how long it would take to reach my planned long distance rowing challenge. Then it was because of the reduced sex scenes as I was watching Chinese drama and Bollywood films for the same reason.
Then it was because no one does friendships of all ages and warm family dynamics the way Korean dramas do. Of course, because I like pretty boys without facial or body hair and that’s what I get for the most part that helps with the fairytale fantasy element of watching tv. The cinematography and beautiful locations that are often featured helps too.

I like to see difference and as it is hard for me to see myself represented positively on mainstream tv then hearing a foreign language & seeing facial features different to mine and the country where I live works for me.

I like metaphors and the language, when the subbers pass on the info, uses a lot of metaphors to get messages across. After discovering all the above I stayed with Korean drama exclusively. The stories are interesting and provide great source material for training and therapy.

First, the only one season (it's changing now) format. I like to have a begining and an end. For US TV show, they don't know if they will be a second season or not, so the end of the season if kinda open...

The places they chose to film. In US shows, we can see they are filming in studio and their outside scenes are really fake. There are some series that are filmed outside but it's rare.

The direction and direction of Photography are more unique in Kdramas. At least, I'm more sensitive to them.

The OST! I like they make specific songs for the drama. There are US show with great OST but they usually chose old songs. One of my favourite US show for that was Cold Case, they chose songs from the year of the murder.

@owl: I’m like you as even though it has only been a year for me, I can’t get enough of some of the dramas and films. I’m still picky and don’t bother with a lot but as an emotional person, I’ve realised Korean style of moving and resonant emotional acting - not screaming, whining, aggressive or self-pitying - is my catnip. I am also strongly drawn to significant national traumas which have enduring intergenerational footprints because of my own descent, and frankly, I’ve had enough of being saturated with the western films and TV shows throughout my life despite actively seeking shows and films from other parts of the world. I also like seeing SK’n and other Asian countries’ societal problems reflected in shows and films even if not always realistically as well as the many dimensions of their humour, joy, friendship, loyalty, friendship, compassion, kindness and generosity. They might be idealised but good arthouse films as well as well-made popular dramas have the capacity to change SK and even other societies for the better. Lastly, it would be hypocritical not to admit that this extremely small percentage of the Korean population are extremely easy on the eye so a bit of that too.

The last 2 weren't hated, just a lot of eye-rolling by the end. What are your bottom 5? :)

1

Actually, it just occurred to me that the dramas I dropped are actually the most hated, so here's another list for you:
Dropped during 1st ep: Her Private Life, Thirty-Nine, Just Between Lovers, Beauty Within, The Lies Within
Dropped after more eps: My Secret Romance, Squid Game, Love Alarm, Chocolate, Hotel del Luna.

The dramas I couldn't love even though I wanted to.
1.Secret garden
2. My hajusshi (don't hate me)
3. Personal taste
4. The heirs
5. Business proposal
6. Welcome to Waikiki
7. My love from another star
8. It's okay not to be okay
I could go on. I gave up after 2 episodes. That's my tolerance. If the story doesn't get interesting after two episodes I'm out.

Interesting week.

Recovered from COVID. Had a busy work week but it was very satisfactory.

And I needed something relaxing and good to watch to recover, so started watching "Beyond Evil". I tried to watch rom-coms for relaxation but it turned out that I can handle serial murders better than second hand embarrassment on behalf of Female Leads.

On the note of "Beyond Evil", (I am on 9th episode) and the kind of chemistry both the male leads have is crazy! Is it just me or the tension they have is off the charts?

I really liked Beyond Evil - ML is awesome, as well as Signal, but I find I just can't bring myself to rewatch them since the serial murder part is so upsetting to me.

It was hard for me to re-watch Signal. And it had only one one of the (then) unsolved crime in S.K but a lot of those where justice was not served. I do not think I can watch Beyond Evil again either.

But I guess for me it depends on how the serial murders are treated. I guess the realistic depiction of the corruption, apathy and inefficiency of police forces (and other government agencies) which makes it harder to watch. (In BE it was intense portrayal of grief as well)

I can re-watch "Silence of the lambs" n number of times. The reasons is it is treated more as a stylistic story than a real life depiction of serial killings (and killers)

At the advice of many Beanies I joined the Heyer Club. However, my enjoyment was greatly increased when I downloaded the audio version of Georgette Heyer's Regency World by Jennifer Kloester. It is a non-fic guide to all the rich detail of the Regency period, meticulously researched and extrremely entertaining. Frankly, the mores and behaviors of the "tonne" contain the plot of every drama ever. What a rich resource for Austen fans as well.

4 episodes in on Extraordinary Attorney Woo and I’m completely invested…solid 10 for me so far. If you’re not watching this show you’re missing out on something really special.

I’m still generally enjoying Why Her? but really wish they had either excluded the romance altogether or set it up with a more realistic partner like Yoon Se Pil from SP Partners. I am a huge fan of noona romances but the FL and ML are just incompatible…it makes no sense why she would fall for the ML. Additionally, there is exactly zero chemistry between the leads.

Indeed, I'm with you on Extraordinary Attorney Woo. Glad I am back to viewing a 'streaming now' show. Been sometime. But unlike you, and I do not know why, I'm not really a fan of noona romances. I wonder if the TV stations have data on longevity of viewing for rom-coms, comparing those noona romances vs. non-noona ones. I reckon the the latter would be more popular. The noona romances I feel are sometimes foisted on just to get one newbie to ride on the coattails of a popular one, or to get same actors from the same agency together from an investment perspective. Noona stories require more character building and depth. I'm sure there will be more of them given the demographics, like in Japan for example. Don't know why but the japanese seem to do better at noona romance stories.

Yeah, I think this will get added to my queue, but I prefer the option of binging so I'll wait til it's all out before starting

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

I am going mattress shopping tomorrow!🥳 Once upon a time some relatives threw away their double bed with two single mattresses and single me was quick to intercept.😁Unfortunately, I would go asleep on one of the single mattresses and always wake up nestled in between both mattresses. Because, of course, that is where the middle is located.🤭 Good sleep and healthy limbs are important, so I am hunting for a double mattress tomorrow!💪

Good luck with mattress hunting. That's what I did when the pandemic eased a bit. I think we are all seeking comfort where and when we can. Hope you recovered from illness.

Feeling a lot better, thank you! How relatable your words about comfort are! Lots of things, aside from my health, went south and caused worries these last few weeks and after ordering that mattress I felt at peace again for the first time. :)

One thing we are all learning is looking after the basics is really important, these days especially. So eating well, staying hydrated and sleeping should be the aim of each day and everything else is a bonus.

A good mattress is a given now there are so many options re heat, back support etc. settling is no longer an option we should willing take unless finances are an issue.

I do admit that I was leaning towards a cheaper option at first, but fortunately I got persuaded to put my health before my wallet, and I do not think I will regret that decision. :)

You won’t regret your decision. And probably the mattress has a short return policy if you find it uncomfortable.

Your situation reminds me of how I always get a laugh from the drama characters sleeping in double/queen/king beds who stay on one side. I’m yelling, whaddya doing? Get in the middle! 😂

All 18 episodes of MBC’sTRACER with Siwan and Ko Ah-sung are now available on Kocowa (where it should have been in the first place!).
It is divided into two seasons of eight episodes each. Is there a chance TRACER may also be released now to Viki? Who knows.

I wonder if we can expect the same dance with MBC’s upcoming BIG MOUTH with Lee Jong-suk and Im Yoon-ah which was taken by Disney plus. Will BIG MOUTH eventually be released on Kocowa?

Make that ‘All 16 episodes’.

I really don't understand why Tracer has taken so long to be officially subbed. With regard to the cast and story, it seems to be pretty much on par with other MBC shows that popped up on international platforms almost instantaneously.
