Watching “Chief of Staff”, “DS:60” and listening to “1865” podcast it down on me for the first time how much power and influence political aides can wield.
DS:60 , ugh, how useless those NIS agents can be? And isn’t high time for Interim President to stop looking like is lost in the woods and afraid to ask for direction, it’s almost two month after.
I think part of the blame lays on director? If not for disclaimer at the beginning I would never guess that we are already so far in the 60 days time limit. None of the characters seems accustomed to the circumstances or have better connection with President, which I would assume should formed by this time.
I agree with what @mano says below. Frankly, Saudi Arabia may be problematic, but all countries have their issues. Perhaps because I’m not from the West, I find it ridiculous when folks from the West try and ostracize folks from countries round other parts of the world. Of course, there may be non Western fans that share the view that BTS should not perform in Saudi Arabia, but as long South Korea’s political stance is not expressly anti-Saudi, there is no reason for BTS to not perform there – all the better for Saudi fans as well. Nicki Minaj on the other hand, is American, subject to different pressures.
In some way, this is like when a few male idols such as Shinee’s Minho came to India for a variety show, Korean fans were all “how could you send them to such an unsafe and dirty country?” As an Indian, reading such comments REALLY put me off.
@greenfields, from what I recall all famous artists planning concerts in controversial locations (Saudi Arabia, Israel, Chechnya and so on) faced intense media and public scrutiny, I’m curious how Korean agency not accustomed to that will react.
I agree with greenie, to other keyboard warriors, yeah baby preach, like your country never does/did anything wrong ever and so the only place kpop groups or musicians should perform is Antractica, till we colonize it!
The decision to perform in a place is for the fans and its a decision of the artist!
People don’t complain when they perform for the British queen! If they were doing for the Saudi king, okay, that is something different than performing for fans. And then you complain and I get it!
Nicki Minaj posted “what would I wear?” in Saudi Arabia.
I think it depends on the artist whether or not they want to perform in certain countries. I don’t think BTS will have a problem with their wardrobe, they might make Jimin wear an undershirt.
I hate KSA with a passion because as an Indonesian Muslim who studied and now work in Islamic school I know and see with my own eyes their presence and influence in my community for the last two decades. Not to mention our poor sisters and brothers who work there as maids and blue collar workers beheaded by Saudi authorities sometimes without informed our embassy!
By the way, where are these people of the internet and celebrities when migrant workers beheaded in Saudi?
Having said that Saudi fans still have the rights to meet their kpop idols. If the world wants Saudi to become a normal country let Saudi youths have experience like the rest of us, such as attending kpop concerts and be a part of global fandom.
Well, seeing that just a couple days ago Super Junior AND Stray Kids performed in Jeddah and are home now with little to no backlash, I dont see an issue. There are fans from all over the world and people cant choose what country they come from and ALL fans deserve the chance to see their favorites.
Watching DS:60 days, ep. 3, there is one thing that’s bother me. I don’t feel the impact of nation going through such a horrible loss, it’s hard to belive that politicians would go back to their usual squabble just day after losing so many close colleagues and friends, the same with journalists, there must be a lot of journalists at Assembly, it was important political event after all, and they all acts like nothing happened in the terms of human tragedy.
The presidential staffs were crying, it was shown in the first or second episode. What do you expect them to do?
In the American version, I remember, there’s a governor of one state (I don’t remember the name of the state) trying to challenge the acting president authority. Politician will always be politician.
I don’t expect them to cry constantly, but show more practical and emotional aspect of national tragedy, and those politicians and journalists lost close colleagues in the explosion, it’s hard to belive they would go at each others throat, just days after.
Designated Survivor is not about how people cope with tragedy. How they cope with their loss was not shown much in the picture because it’s not the theme of this drama.
Designated Survivor is about how political institution, in this case government, survive this national tragedy. It’s about how to ensure government still work after losing more than half of its key people. Politician would go at each other throat at every opportunity because to get to the top is a zero sum game and they always believe that they are the best person for the job.
But imho, they didn’t show that so far, just usual political squabble unaffected by what happened. Like there are ar least 300 state funerals to prepare, national mourning period to announce, election to prepare on top of trying to run the country, stuff like that. I don’t care if they follow original, I didn’t watch it, just comment on what I saw on screen.
I agree that the show would be better for me if they had included scenes of national shock and mourning. The “wall” they put up at the site and the lack of crowds there seem so small. I guess it’s for budget reasons.
Reading comments about LOTJ kerfuffle, I’m suprised that people decided to defend Lee Yeol-eum, as if ignorance ever protected anyone from legal consequences, rather than concentrate on real damage to the protected wildlife and attitude of the crew toward regulations in developing country, it’s not like hunting or harvesting in national parks would be allowed in any other country. And I won’t even dive into ethical aspect of the show concept as whole.
I thought they were really in different jungles until I read this. National parks? Like you said it isn’t like it’s ok anywhere else. I feel putting most of the blame on the actress is unfair though. We all know she was told to do it. It was foolish and arrogant.
Probably, but she is on tape catching those clams, and it’s not like she is really will face any legal ramifications beyond public backlash and not ever setting foot in Thailand.
But that the risk of being public person, she did it to look good on camera and it backfire on her, but on English forum no one really blame her, I have no idea what reaction is from Korean public, but hopefully it’s too focusing on production team.
From what I read K-netz are calling for the program to be canceled. She is also getting a lot of negative comments. Those producers should have known better. Smh, oh well. What’s done is done.
Shach is right actually. Since she did the “catching”, the first, direct charge is on her. Everyone else can only be charged with abetment or criminal conspiracy.
And let’s be honest, it’s not like any of them will face any legal ramification since they already left Thailand, they’ll just to have cross Thailand out from future vacay list.
weird thing is..
police accuses an idol/entertainer -> Fans question sanctity of justice system and shout corruption from the rooftop
When idol gets acquitted of “rape” charges on out of court settlement -> Fans telling others how pathetic others are for being haters for questioning corruption or justice system
I feel like Yi Hyun portrayal in latest eps of Nokdu Flower took serious tumble, there is no subtlety or complexity of character there any more, just cartoonish villain short of evil laugh and invisible moustache twirling.
I noticed that drama I liked the most this year like Nokdu Flower, Save Me2 or SKY Castle are ensemble cast and character driven. I hope this trend will keep going on.
One of the weirdest aspect of SK entertainment for me is how openly families of celebrities are profiting from their fame, I just read about SJK family closing his museum in their home due to divorce because much of the “exhibition ” was based on DOTS but it’s also things like the cafes, some other food venues that are run by close family memberes and plastered with images of celebrity that seem prevalent in SK and I rarely met with something like that in my part of world, if anything similar would take place, the family would be heavily criticized for money grubbing and lowering the celebrity brand value. I noticed too that celebrities in SK are more open about money that private lives unlike in the West. I’m not criticizing this in any way just musing on cultural difference, I think that what’s make following other industires so fascinating, some aspects that are kept private in my region are openly disccussed in another and vice versa, it’s really eye opening sometimes, and it help to keep my prejudices in check.
That “museum” is actually his family home. After he got famous it got repeatedly trespassed by fans so his family can’t live there on a regular basis. However his father won’t sell it because it’s a third generation home, so he used it to keep the gifts that fans send to SJK. There’s no entrance fee. So fans can just visit his birth home freely. His father takes care of it regularly but he’s not really there most the time. As far as I read, it’s not closed but he removed all pictures of SHK, which is most of the DOTS stuff.
Thanks, I didn’t know that, I just saw that in the news and it reminded me of my initial wonder at differences in celebrity cultures and inspired my midnight musings.
Yeah I’ve found that weird but interesting. I mean it’s usually the celebrity’s choice to buy the family say a chicken shop that can use his image to advertise. But, I would say that’s a better practice than just showering your family with money because the family still has to run and maintain the shop and really it was only the initial investment (if they do business right) that the celeb helped with. In America, it’s more like when the kid gets rich they are just expected to treat their parents with the new car or house or whatever.
I’ve seen interviews were a celeb says they bought a house or car for their parents when they finally made it. If I had had the means I’d have set my mom up too.🤷♀️
That’s another thing that I find interesting, that they mainly invest in food/hospitality kind of business, in here when celebrity admit to invest in family business it’s something that already existed or is related to family member regular job, in SK it’s mostly cafes and restaurants which is rather risky from business point of view.
this isn’t that uncommon honestly. it’s just enacted in different ways. like private museums and families that own collections? you know. some family members don’t want to be a part of it, some do. and in the west we are more private about money but one thing the world shares is that flaunting wealth is a sign of worth. imo it’s sad. the differences between celebrity like the public/private life and what people can/can’t say in the west and the east is really interesting too!
it is the fan difference.. and the reason why Knetz/kfans don’t give any respect to what international fans think
the fan culture and their willingness to spend money and promoting their celeb as a full time job is unparallelled..
But to me this is just another version of what worked for korea.. money creates money (economics concept) and the reason why spend economy like USA thrives better.. for korea with such a small market.. they make sure that enough content is available that makes people spend more and more.. fan culture is really encouraged
I really don’t like romance in WWW at all, BTM is too passive and PM come off as controlling and manipulative, I get it, that they don’t want to portrait her as some cradle robber but if she is attracted to him it weird that she isn’t try to pursue him a bit given her personality, I’m tired of this trope that in relationship woman needs to be this shy princess in a tower waiting to be saved by her white knight.
You really see Ta Mi as passive. I see her as someone who is keeping Morgan at arms length because she knows herself well enough to know how they will end.
I think I’m bothered how this relationship is lead by him almost solely and she just get dragged along, I just don’t see her reluctance in that or fear of commitment.
I agree with both of you. PM is immature, controlling and manipulative and seriously I hope they do something worthwhile with this story line or just end it.
BTM isn’t passive – but she is very VERY careful and not willing to start anything new without knowing what she’s getting into. I like how she still keeps him at arms length no matter how much he whines.
Sorry but his character really bothers me – she is (or seems to be) very strong and self-aware.
Will be interesting to see what happens.
I wonder if the show is gonna make this about a generation gap instead of him just being kind of a asshole bc he is not getting his way with a woman. It has been alluded to that he has never had that issue before.
Prefinale of Save Me2 was a roller-coaster ride! Everything went off the rails in most spectacular manners, I just hope Kim siblings survive in the end. This and Nokdu Flower are best dramas this year
Another surprise was YongSun standing by her brother, that was something I really didn’t expected, I just hope it doesn’t mean that MinCheol won’t survive the finale. I’m still clinging on some kind of happy ending for Kim siblings and rest of villagers.
I wonder how it’s possible to write multiple times, that foot was cut off when victim was alive but pinkie from the same foot was removed after death and see nothing wrong with that/Partners in Crime2
Troy is my own interpretation of this 😉 and their costumes look pretty similar to the 2004 movie “Troy”, in last episode Mihol told one of his men that they come to Arthdal because some of it’s artwork looked similar to those of people who destroyed their civilization.

It’s not regular for

… for celebrities to have their own museums. This is a special case.

Lol, what part of America are you from?

I’ve seen interviews were a celeb says they bought a house or car for their parents when they finally made it. If I had had the means I’d have set my mom up too.🤷♀️

Certainly some do. I wouldn’t say it’s “expected” in America.

That is fair. Rereading what you initially wrote, Morgan is hella entitled.

So Mihol’s people are refugees from Troy who under Remus lead came to Arthdal, looking for people who destroyed their civilization, ok.

Troy is my own interpretation of this 😉 and their costumes look pretty similar to the 2004 movie “Troy”, in last episode Mihol told one of his men that they come to Arthdal because some of it’s artwork looked similar to those of people who destroyed their civilization.
