Beanie level: Noble idiot

Another poor defense I’ve seen for TBH is that “the writers intended it to be this way”. Yeah and? So what? Why does intent matter when I think the outcome is bad? This one’s not even worthy of a rant lol.

I’ve given up on it. I think I might finish it one day, but the moment I saw that clichéd who-will-get-there-first ending in episode 18, I just lost all desire to watch it. And I don’t ship anyone…

I’ve been trying to figure out why I hated Friday’s episode of The Best Hit soooo much. Was it just because things weren’t going the way I thought they should? Isn’t being surprised good? Was it because I am worried about Ji-hoon disappearing ala Back to the Future? Was it because there was no Grandpa and Mal-sook? Was it because it was focused on romance? But that can’t be — I love romance. Was it just because I am on the wrong ship?

And why don’t I like Hyun-jae more? I love Yoon Shi-yoon. I’ve liked jerk protagonists before. And what girlfriday said about realizing you are no longer young and hip and cool and are supposed to be peers with the parents rang true to me. But somehow, I hate Hyun-jae. He is just so very very self-centered. And I find that annoying rather than funny.

Fortunately, for me at least, Saturday’s episode was much better. Grandpa and Mal-sook were back. Hyun-jae owned being selfish and started trying to change. And Hyun-jae also actually saw Bo-hee. As a person. Who loved him. And saw evidence from his future self that he loved her once.

And can I just tell you how very much I loved the La La Land nod? It was the perfect was to acknowledge that Hyun-jae’s feelings for Woo-seung were real, and they could have been cute together, but some things are just not meant to be. I’m going to be pissed if they take that back next week.

Well I haven’t actually been watching since ep. 20, just following the recaps. If it improves I’ll go back and watch, but I’m not confident it will, so I’ll wait until the very end. I agree with you in that I never cared for Hyun-jae nearly as much as everyone else, even though I adore YSY. Even in the first few eps I was getting really annoyed with all the people screaming for more screentime for YSY, because I really loved all the characters and didn’t want him to outshine everyone else. Then once he modernized himself, I really completely lost interest in him. He just wasn’t funny anymore and like you said mostly just a selfish jerk.

Hmm I went and watched a bit of ep 24 (skipped through lol) and see what you mean about it improving, but I’m still not convinced they won’t go with HJ/WS, because knetz will riot if they don’t. This ep would be a nice farewell to HJ/WS, but it could just be typical relationship angst in the last third of a drama to keep them separated for a bit longer. However I remain doubly convinced that regardless of what they do with HJ/WS, I think HJ is definitely really and truly JH’s birth father. The secret code pretty much confirms that BH and HJ dated. If they spend the next 4 episodes clearing up the mystery of HJ’s disappearance, allowing JH some time to finally bond with HJ (although I imagine we will have to spend a good episode of two with JH understandably wanting nothing to do with HJ), giving us heartwarming moments between family/friends, and seeing everyone following their dreams, and preferably having Hyun-jae say his goodbyes and being unable to stay in the present, then I will be able to forget all my frustrations and remember this drama fondly. It’s already past the point where I thought it was going to be one of my favorite dramas ever, but I think I can at least like it if they clear everything up in the end.

I’ll let you know if it is a fluke or a turning point. Because you’re right, it could go either way at this point, and I’m not sure I trust them anymore to go the right way. The right way being the way I want things to go, of course. 😉 Fingers crossed for a turning point.

Don’t know if you caught it, but we also got another confirmation of Hyun-jae and Bo-hee dating. Hyun-jae found his notebook in Young-jae’s safe and started flipping through it. It had notes in it about meeting Bo-hee. The whole Hyun-jae is not really Ji-hoon’s father theory has never made any sense to me.

        2
        2

Lol thanks. I didn’t catch that but yeah that’s even more evidence. Usually the twists in dramas are that people are related and didn’t know it, not that they aren’t related lol. I don’t care about ships anymore if I ever really did, but I would flip tables if HJ isn’t JH’s father, because that’s what originally hooked me to this show. I think I just need to stay away from the recap comments now since some people just can’t handle criticism and continue to attack all the critics as only caring about shipping and not addressing any of our arguments. *sigh*

Well . . . it’s over. I still think my ending would have been better. And it took me a few attempts to get through this week’s episodes. But at least they didn’t pull out a last minute birth secret for Ji-hoon. And there were a few good scenes mixed in.

But. Ugg. I’m glad this show worked for a lot of people, but overall, I found it VERY frustrating. I liked 1994 Hyun-jae more in the tiny glimpse we had of him than I did any of 1993 Hyun-jae. Even by the very end when he had grown somewhat. Somewhat. Of course, then 1994 Hyun-jae decided that the future needed to stay the same. Why? I don’t know. So his alter ego could go back to his cell phone, I guess.

Thanks for the update. So I guess all my theories were right (I predicted the two Hyun-jae’s/multiverse back in the very beginning of the show) and I get to say I told you so to everyone that insisted to me that there’s no way HJ would really be JH’s father. But somehow it’s even more frustrating that they kept it that way yet barely bothered to develop any meaningful relationship between HJ-JH. And the love triangle and main loveline is still very much gross to me even with two Hyun-jae’s. Even ignoring the vaguely incestuous undertones the main loveline would never have drawn me in, it was so BORING and cliche and made me hate WS. Also from recaps it really seems like Hyun-jae took over the show completely half-way through and everyone else was relegated to side characters even though early on the screentime was pretty even for everyone. This drama would have been so much better had they just not given HJ a loveline at all. I also would’ve liked it if it was 1994 HJ who time-traveled after already fathering JH so he would’ve felt more responsible and if anything have a love triangle with GJ (preferably resolved quickly without much frustration though) over BH (obviously his love for BH would be doomed, but that would be part of his character growth to come to terms with how people have moved on since his disappearance) instead of with his own son. I’m glad I saved myself the trouble of watching the 2nd half of the show. Now I have Reunited Worlds which is pretty much what I wanted from the emotional aspect of The Best Hit (obviously I wanted it to be a comedy first and foremost, but the emotional impact of someone seemingly dying only to show up years later unaged is much better handled in RU than it ever was in TBH). Hoping this one won’t disappoint me as much.

Yes!!!! To everything you said. I wish I could thumbs-up multiple times.

Fingers crossed for Reunited Worlds. At least this time I like the lead right off the bat and don’t feel like I have to wait for him to grow up and start seeing the people around him.

I’d like to rant a bit about the common defense of a drama that’s getting criticism which attempts to invalidate their arguments by claiming that the critics are primarily just upset that their ship isn’t endgame. This is mostly in regards to The Best Hit, but I’ve seen it before with other dramas.

First of all, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with not liking a drama because your ship isn’t endgame! I’m really confused as to how this is even a thing people think is bad. I suppose the idea is that you are being shallow if you don’t like a drama solely (though most of the time if you bother to read people’s whole arguments this is not the only reason) because your ship isn’t turning out well. But this is primarily ROMANCE dramas we are talking about. If not liking the main or even secondary romance in a romance drama is not a valid reason to not like and drop the drama, then by god what is??? Even if it’s not a romance drama, so long as the pairing is taking up screen time and making you uncomfortable it’s perfectly fine to drop the drama because of it! Don’t force yourself to keep watching something you aren’t enjoying just because you think the reasons you aren’t enjoying it are shallow. There are also a lot of really good reasons someone might not like/be uncomfortable with a particular romantic pairing. Maybe it’s because of personal experience or something, you never know. Even if there isn’t such a reason, that’s fine. You are allowed to just not like a drama because you don’t like the romantic pairings in it. That’s totally cool and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise or make you afraid to state your opinion.

Second of all, this defense works both ways lol. I can easily say all the people who like the drama only like it because their ship is endgame. Now just like it’s fine to dislike a drama mainly because of the romantic pairings, it’s also fine to like it mainly because of liking the romantic pairings. God knows how many dramas I liked and finished primarily because the leads had amazing chemistry even though maybe everything else kind of sucked. But my point is that just like saying everyone only likes this drama because their ship is sailing is a poor criticism, saying everyone only dislikes this drama because their ship is sinking is an equally poor defense. Either way there’s not much you can do to prove it and ultimately you are just deflecting from the actual criticisms/praise the drama is getting. Address what people are actually saying instead of attacking the supposed reasons they are saying it.

Why is Shin-young’s sunbae such an ass!? Why is he so hellbent on ruining her career? Does he actually like her and thinks she’ll marry him if he makes her quit her job or something??? #TWWSWTGM

Showing up during a cold night with hot coffee and sweet potatoes, bringing the sweet potato stand to her, so she can warm up by the fire, sharing his scarf with her. I CANT TOO SWOONY #TWWSWTGM

I love how Min-jae and Shin-young are both using a bet as a pretense to openly flirt with each other, when they are obviously both interested anyways. #TWWSWTGM

The doctor has some faults, but Sang-woo\’s the real douchebag here. Can\’t wait for him to eat his words when he sees how Min-jae really is interested in her. #TWWSWTGM

It’s really easy to fake sick in Korea, just color your lips really pale. That’s not actually a symptom of a cold or the flu, but whatever, Kim Bum looks sexy doing it. #TWWSWTGM

I’m genuinely confused as to how chocolates are bad gift to someone you are interested in, but not dating. Who on earth would give a ring as a first gift??? #TWWSWTGM

2

Oh my gosh! I was right there with you. Like…it was on thing for Jung Da Jung to think there would be a ring there–of course Jung Da Juna would think a man was giving her a ring before he even confessed. It was that Kim Bu Gi was right there with her egging Shin Young on that had me confused.

    1
    1

Yeah Bu Gi’s usually the smart one. I mean a box of chocolates can easily cost several hundred dollars and really why should the price matter? I get that they are modern successful career women, but I found that whole scene a bit too materialistic.

I know you are probably just looking for an excuse to see her again, but “Mommy, my friends got in trouble, please help,” is probably not the best reason when you are trying to catch the interest of a noona. #TWWSWTGM

In Dramaland actors get married and everyone\’s super happy especially when it\’s their ship. In Kpop fandom an idol gets married and fans make them withdraw from their group\’s next comeback. UGHHHH

It’s just so sad, I was looking forward to SuJu’s comeback, I want Sung-min with them! 😢

Yeah Sung-min is my second fav and my first fav is Ryeowook who’s in the army, so not really that interested in their comeback now. I certainly won’t be buying the album anymore. I just don’t understand, it’s only been k-elf making a big fuss about his marriage and wanting him out, and yet the vast majority of SuJu’s profit is from i-elf mainly Chinese ELF who support Sungmin.

Kyu-hyun is my favorite but I love them as a group! I read their petition letter, I can’t get them really!

I thought K-ELFs “Only13” demand letter was off the charts but that “Sungmin Out” letter was another ridiculous letter.

As a casual SJ fan, I am still shocked why SJ as a group & SM seem to give in to K-ELFs all these years. But when you check facts, it’s the I-ELFs especially C-ELFs that has been bringing in the cash from album sales to concerts.

          0

Double standards. I also think it is the age group we are talking about also: kpop = tweens, actors = the general public. Grandma isn’t going to care about Song Joon-ki’s pending nuptials.

    6
    1

Like okay if this was a newer group I might buy that, but SuJu has been around for 12 yrs. Even if
most of the fans making a fuss are newer and younger fans, they should know going into a fandom where the members are all 30+ that many of them are probably going to get married. If they don’t like go back to stanning the kiddos.

      3
      1

But that is the problem exactly! It’s the newer younger tween fans of the kpop world that create these kinda of problems. They want their oppa to themselves and don’t understand that – hey they are grown men and no longer young guys. They can’t see the difference unfortunately. Crazy kpop fans are crazy.
