And this. Isn’t this what PBY played in Werewolf Boy? 😂

I feel like this ep is playing PBY’s previous dramas/movies tropes. The first one feels like Strong Woman with the outfit and the second set of pictures feels like a gender swapped On Your Wedding Day

I got the Strong Woman vibes too, hahahaha!

You’re right!!! I totally didn’t get that. So what about the convertible scene? I have to admit, that was kinda hot. SIG in sunglasses with his hair slicked back. Hubba hubba. 😆

Haha I didn’t get the convertible scene actually! But yes! SIG is hot in that. Biting on the card too!!!

Omg. Sooo drama has accurately predicted that I’ve been playing Solitaire the last week?! *gasp* and the Oreo O’s!! So a little back story, I was at the supermarket the other day, choosing my cereal and actually considered buying one box. But it’s so big and I’m afraid that it wouldn’t taste good so I opted for another flavour instead

Arc definitely got better in ep 19-20. These are my favourite eps!! Ivy and Roy’s oozing chemistry. How cute artist is (tho I do not agree to some of his actions). And how funny the eps turned out. Perfect!

Some Roy appreciation for the betrayers out there, look at what you are missing out on!! @13infamyss @mayhemf @ayaan

😭😭😭😭😭😢 the writers betrayed us. They made us watch Roy fish kiss Jenny.

Ok. Gonna watch 19 onwards :)) for the love of Roy!

    2
    2

HAHAHA Betrayers indeed. Don’t worry Stagie. You have me for company 😛

    1

Is this worth watching – or is Roy alone worth the watching?

    1
    3

I would actually recommend. But to note on two things:
      1. Don’t support OTP so early if not you are in for disappointment
      2. Their business model jumps a lot, but I’m attributing this to how a startup functions

With the casts, it’s actually solid acting there so I would recommend to go in for a light watch with little expectations

      My take on the show:
      — It’s a very very well produced show. Lots of money seems to have gone into it. Unlike the usual tw-drama fare.
      — The actors are excellent, and proving their worth even with a questionable storyline. The ensemble gels really well together.
      — The music is super.
      — The art direction is beautiful.
      — I have issues with the storyline / plot, which is makjang-ish, and also very unrealistic. A lot of noble idiocy and outright stupidity. However, the story is *very fast paced*. It feels like several 16-ep kdramas packed into one.
      — It had a very strong opening, but lost direction early.
      — But but but, I feel it has come back to how it started with eps 19/20 (out of a total of 24).

If all these qualifiers make you want to watch, I’d recommend. I was annoyed in between, but stuck with it, and made my peace, and am now enjoying it.

Good to hear this one has high production value – one aspect that TW drama could do better. And strong opening but meandering in the middle is also a common issue too but worth it if pulling through in the end.

Also to answer your question on Roy – sorry I missed that earlier – he has limited screen time, the three women take centrestage. But when he’s on screen, he does a good job. He gets to show some range, which made me happy. It’s taken me a while but I’ve come to realise he’s a really fine actor, in terms of skill, and not just how he looks 😂 (which is enough to convince most people to watch, of course ).

      1
      1

Roy has grown into a very fine actor and not just a gorgeous face. His turn in the movie Dear Ex as a scruffy gay guy who lost his lover and somehow helped out his lover’s widow and son was an award-worthy performance. I’m looking forward to checking out his latest movie When A Man Falls in Love which is breaking box office record in TW currently. The movie’s BTS showing how he couldn’t stop crying long after the camera stopped really piques my interest.

        2
        2

Oooh! I have to watch Dear Ex. It’s on my list for a while. I’m also eyeing on his new movie! I’ve had similar conversations with another beanie who reads Chinese and is actively looking for spoilers since it just aired. We usually talk on Discord since we have a server. Would you like to join? Pickle and I talk about Arc every week too

          1
          3

Actually, Dear Ex was what sold me on Roy’s acting. I was so so so impressed. Even though some of the folks I chatted with about this drama didn’t like it as much. I thought it was a good film, and stellar acting by Roy.

I’ve watched trailers for A Man in Love. It’s going to be a tearjerker, so I’m a little wary. I’m worried this will be too violent and emotional for my liking.

          1
          5

A Man In Love is going to be sad, ive read some parts here and there but not the ending, Jrr knows tho, ive basically provided her that info. Based on a Korean Movie i think

            2
            0

I love Dear Ex to bit and other TW indie art movies a lot. While I don’t understand the TW / Hokkien dialect, there’s a warm earthiness to it that I find enchanting.

@epyc2010 Ooh I’d love recommendations, if you are so inclined! I don’t understand any of these languages, of course, but I seem to have acquired a soft spot for anything Taiwanese, cinema or drama. I feel that their shows have so much more heart than Korean or – of course – mainland Chinese dramas. And because their budgets are so low, the acting really shines, because there are no other distractions, like makeup, or costumes, or fancy sets, or stuff like that. You get to see some fabulous talent as a result.

I typed a rather long post but it went to the dither…

My two fav from the last few years are quite dark, both shot in black and white – black comedy about people in the margin, ie those in the bottom 1%, with superbly set up plot, sublime directing and acting. They are:
            Godspeed – https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godspeed_(film)
            The Great Buddha+ – https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Buddha%2B

You could start with Godspeed. If it’s your thing, you can watch The Great Buddha + (in which the violence and sex go up a notch higher). I watched both several times and appreciate more each time – pretty much laughing and crying with those characters.

If these are too dark, then A Sun about a middle class family would be more universally appreciated – see this Variety commentary, https://variety.com/2021/film/columns/discover-taiwan-oscar-submission-a-sun-on-netflix-1234925749/

Both The Great Buddha+ and A Sun are TW’s submissions for Oscar.

Thanks for the recs @epyc2010 I already had The Great Buddha+ and A Sun on my list. Adding Godspeed as well! I’ve also been wanting to watch Little Big Women. Shame about DB eating up your comment :/

Roy my love. Gimme a drama that won’t give me blue balls. I need a Marry Me-like drama sans the makjang that happened at the end. And that’s when I’ll come back to you. You look very beautiful tho.

Alright. I finally cleared Hymn of Death from my watchlist. I loved it from the start till the end. The BGM fits perfectly and I absolutely loved the OST in this post. I do think the OST while they were on the beach is a little off tho. But it was just a short while so it’s okay.

Ethics aside ahem infidelity cough. The filial piety message is very strong here. The Asian culture is very evident in this. Getting married, taking over the company, feeding your family as the eldest child, just for the sake of your parents. No wonder both were sooo burdened by it. My heart got heavier in the last episode. We could clearly saw the bitter smiles the leads had and why it ended that way.

Onto the heavier topic. Not that I am trying to normalise it. Infidelity these days are a huge no. But keeping in mind that it’s the 1920s, Asian culture. Women are still considered as “things” they get married for the sake of serving their husbands. Not for love. Hence I could see why Woojin did that. However, if it’s set in the current time, then it’s a big nono in my books.

I seldom start on something so heavy but like I’ve said, I absolutely loved this work. More so probably due to the real-life events and history behind it.

I had a hard time with it too, as in that it was soo sad. But they were so great in their roles that I guess it hit harder because of both of them.

Watching snippets of Shin Hyesun’s video and I came across the one where she promoted 30B17. Aaaaaah I forgot how much I loved the drama and Yang Sejong 😍🥰

I am actually satisfied with Mr Queen’s ending! I think because I was applying the same principles as SD1D. I thought So Yong was stuck in a room just like Chen Yun Ru is just that unlike SD1D, we don’t see or hear them. So I thought SY knows what’s going on in real life just that she has no control of. But I can also see why people might be unsatisfied with the ending. It was expected. But I actually also hoped that we get to see more BH in SY’s comedy. I was anticipating to see the childbirth etc. Oh and I think since BH is in SY’s body, I thought of it as female hormones will apply to him too. Everything in a female’s body is unchanged just that the mindset and thoughts are a male’s. Which is why we saw her having periods, getting pregnant and falling for Cheoljong.

Next. Wow. SHS’s acting! I could immediately catch the difference between SY and BH! She has done soooo well in this!

Also, did anyone notice how the King was referred to as Cheoljung in the eps before and in the last ep, he’s referred to as Cheoljo?

7
2

I see the Viu gif so I’m guessing you didn’t watch it on Viki. In Viki they explained that “Jo” is attached to any king’s name who has done some honorable deeds and has accomplishments. Lol I don’t remember the exact description but that hinted that Cheoljong did not die as a womanizer but was able to make the Joseon he wanted.

    1
    1

It was explained very early on when they were doing CJ’s portrait when BH/SY thought Jo and Jung thingy sounded familiar and it was explained. A pity how Viu didn’t bring that explanation back in the last ep

Not reaaaaally. It’s planned for 80 eps, so I wouldn’t really recommend unless you:
      1. got lots of time to kill
      2. can understand Chinese (because I don’t think this is subbed) and need something to be played in the background

He’s looking like such a goofball! So different (and so much older) compared with his IAGW days.

It’s a currently airing Taiwanese show called The Arc of Life, which some of us are watching. I’m personally really enjoying it! Stellar cast, and a story that’s moving at bullet train speed!!

      2
      1

Is that a good sign or bad? I believe good shows make it seem like there were never enough episodes. I wanted to continue it but haven’t still. Should I?

    1
    1

I don’t know if it’s good or bad, but the pace for me is a little exhausting. It’s moving sooo quickly! And making my brain tired!!

      0
      2

Yeah, I know. I wonder if we are breezing through the tropes right now so that we can get to the desired set-up mid-way and from there, it slows down. Right now, I am not feeling some plots. Like the one in ep 9.

        1
        1

So true! They’re lumping all imaginable tropes all at once. It’s been like a trope encyclopaedia so far 😂 And you’re also right in that the speed affects how the audience connects with the characters. Right now, I’m watching it for the pretty, and Mei Ji.

          1
          1

I am still holding out for Roy and Ivy. i can’t help but make parallels to More Than Blue in ep 9!

Yes yes yes. Still liking it. I would recommend watching the 10 eps I’ve watched so far.

Eps 9 and 10 were a little random, I thought. There was a Roy-in-white-shirt fan service montage, which had me laughing for a bit. The business still doesn’t make sense. But it’s all soooo pretty!!! So much light and green and joy even in the sadness!!

Mei Ji is still my favouritest. I love Mei Ji. I hope she becomes the kickass rich businesswoman she wants to be.

    1
    1

wait which part on the white shirt :scarycry:

Business will get explained in ep 10, briefly. Xiao Niao explained that. So lmk if you are still confused once you are done!

      0
      1

Oh I caught up with ep10!! There’s a brief montage with Roy in the white shirt in between when he’s drinking and later in the company office. It suddenly went slo-mo with music in the background. It was so obvious it was just fanservice 😂 There was no reason for the slo-mo otherwise.

I heard the business explanation XN gives in ep10, but it still seems kind of random. “Brand promotion” for brands that are about the good life / the happy life, etc. Neither XZ nor MJ seem to have known about this plan until she gave that interview to the reporters. Also, there’s never been any real discussion of a business plan or business models, other than the storefront and the tableware, so I found it all a little strange.

        0
        1

the white shirt should be wet. just saying.

yeaah, i am not sure how it was translated, but XN said “people, events, things that are related to good life/happy living” i hope we get a clearer sense of their business model. seemed really vague at the moment. especially since they are launching a concept store, seems like it’s tablewares and artiste for now.

Uncanny Counter – I loved the friendship and the “built” family so much! What I really enjoyed was the acting for Jo Byung Gyu and Kim Sejong. I’ve never watched KSJ in anything before, but her emotions in the drama pulls my heart every time! What felt unsatisfactory was (other than the Son Ho Joon cameo – I was happy and that upset about it) how the plot dragged on in the second half. I thought the drama finished nicely and wouldn’t need a second season… but knowing myself, I would still watch anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

6
4

My exact thoughts. All the things I liked about the drama in the first half (specially Mun relation with his grandparents and friends) disappeared in the second half.

    1

I know! I really hoped that his friends could help in solving the crimes or catching the criminals, while remaining unaware that Mun is a Counter!

I recently watched Kim Sejong in School 2017 and was surprised when I read that it was her first drama. She acted really well there even though it was just her first drama

2017 is the only one I didn’t watch since it didn’t appeal to me. But she did really well in the crying scenes in Uncanny!

A little update on what I’ve been watching! Completed Run On, while I understand the ending, I don’t feel satisfied with DanAh and Yeonghwa’s 🙁 Magic Moment is sooooo good till the end! That slow burn was satisfying and enjoyable! The Arc of Life has my attention these days! Been wanting to start on Mr Queen and a couple of kdramas, but I don’t have the time just yetttt because of the Lunar New Year holidays 😪
