Beanie level: Errand boy

Sky Castle
Ep 8
This show is such a soap opera. Are we really supposed to believe a smart kid like Hye-Na never cared to know who her father really was just because he wasn’t there? And the tutor just follows the crazy father into his car? Because? And who exactly got so close to record that conversation between Hye-Na and the other student inside the school? A drone? I want to like this show for having realistic people and the social criticism but the nice moments keep getting sabotaged by either bad logic or the plain boring characters.

Memories of Alhambra

Beanies, please put the title before the comments so we can avoid any spoiler on the fan wall if we want.
Pretty please?

Million Stars – This show was so good. Until JG turned into a lunatic. Why would he feel so guilty about the past? Why does he remain mute if JK is who she is? Why would MY leave just because Tak dropped by at the house? Did she need a coffee? Was that more important than JG telling him the truth? That was so stupid.

1

hmm.. he is convinced that JK doesn’t know the truth, he gave up on his own sister for JK..
JK is basically like his kid.. he is the father..
so yeah, more than anything he can’t let SIG know the truth and have him come back with his rightful claim on JK..

worse, it will inevitably reach JK.. JG can’t bear her thinking he is not family or that any 3rd person has a right to top this relationship

Million Stars – I’ve got to ask. The scene on the street. Does this also happens on the original?
I’ve been defending JG but I didn’t understand him in ep 11 because he had to have told her about the MiYeon murder and whatever happened in the past. That’s better than the crazy thing he did, which would only bring them closer! He knows WS sent some guys to beat him up. He knows how that went. That was crazy. I wonder if they will even try to explain this.

Yes, in the J-version he also stabbed Ryo (MY) … Jin Gook just turned seriously crazy… and scary.

Thanks. Maybe he wasn’t the nice guy he seemed to be and a lot dumber too.

I thought he already read the book before stabbing him. Turns out he didn’t. Don’t know what to think about him anymore. Actually by this point in the J-version I lost interest in everyone. I’m glad I can at least root for MooYoung and JinKang here — their love feels sooooo deep and real, every kiss pains me.

Beanies, any recommendations for nice romcoms? After TBS, Familiar Wife and MIGB ended only serious shows are left. Meteor Garden is on hold. I prefer no Cdrama but jdrama is fine.

I’ve started Your Honor and YSY is must have been high. I mean he has to right? How did he overact so much? And why no pd said anything? He makes me remember when Lee Joon tried to pretend he was a bad actor in Father is Strange. He was much better though!

like everyone has said. dont give up on first ep. you will see the difference between soo ho and kang ho soon enough that you will appreciate his acting skills.

I watched the first 2 eps, I really like him so I’ll give him a few more chances but it’s like Enrique, the crazy bunny from FBND, decided to pretend being a judge.

I’ve been chatting about this with ChinguMode a lot and we came to the conclusion that maybe the PD wanted him to be like this for comedic effect? The drama would get really dark otherwise and maybe he’s asked to be funny to counterbalance that?

But yeah, I’m not a fan of the snarl. It does get better…

Crazy pd! Kang Ho has no reason to be an energizer bunny, YSY should have refused! I’ve been kind of wanting SooHo to come back and smack him on the head even if he is a dirty judge.

I just looked back through my ‘What I’m Watching’ Saturday posts and I think I’ve ranted about this EVERY SINGLE WEEK.

This is what I wrote a couple of weeks ago:
Your Honor is still trying to decide whether it’s being serious or funny. I studied the genre of ‘one character pretending to be another character’ closely – having watched both Switch and Are You Human?- and I can tell where YSY is going wrong (sorry for YSY fans). What he seems to have missed, is that he’s supposed to play not 2 but 3 characters: Character A, Character B and Character A pretending to be Character B . Because he never does the third bit, I’m left scratching my head wondering if all his colleagues are just stupid or blind, that they don’t realise that the guy who turned up is a completely different person who acts nothing like the judge and has no knowledge of the law. And still I find myself watching it and being interested in the cases that are being tried.

Was Switch any good? I am a fan of JGS but I dislike cop stories so I dropped early.
About YH so right! The comedy is bad and the serious part doesn’t fit, but I’ll try again!

I liked Switch and JGS was awesome. Plot got a bit silly but it didn’t take itself to seriously

I don’t follow this drama but few days ago I jumped straight to recent ep where there’s a scene he’s being all emotional on judge’s seat, stopped the video because it started to get cringe-y and I was like oh, okay, so this is what they meant by over-acting. Why he did that though?

The overacting was my main complaint about this show initially. At the urging of other fellow Beanies to stick with the show, I have and things have seemed to settle down a bit more.

I love time traveling stories and I’ve started Familiar Wife, after 3 eps I’m a bit confused about how the husband travels? Can anyone explain? I hope it’s not all just a dream.

Does anyone have some recommendations for other shows like Secret, Mask and Time? I’ve already watched Money Flower and Whisper. No weekend if it’s a too long show. I’m in a melo mood I guess.

Have you watched ‘a love to kill’? A perfect melodrama I think. It has got rain oppa and shin min-a.

    Did you like Money flower?

Yes, it was good, the cast was great. The last eps maybe not as good as the rest but still a solid melo if it was a melo. Not sure about what genre it belongs.

Some thoughts on AYHT 29-30

I still like this show very much but now I think it’s safe to say they can give it a good resolution with just 18 eps because so much of the gray characters and their conflicts has been turned into a good x evil battle.

I am still pleasantly surprised by the fact that despite their interest in selling the romance the story doesn’t stop asking the tricky questions about the robot. Last week there were so many moments I felt she should be waking up to the fact he is robot, sorry, my understanding is that she loves him with the unsconscious idea that he is almost like a person. That moment he plays the piano like a machine, learning in minutes, not even feeling the music, he goes to a movie but has no interest in the story and can’t feel sad about the story, I thought she would have some doubts but guess not. Besides it’s almost as if the writing showed us him behaving like a machine but the pd took it as ordinary romantic scenes, which often happens in this drama.

This week they took these questions even further because not only his brain is not his possession, he doesn’t have free will. Even if manual mode is erased doesn’t mean anything, somebody can have access to his memory at any time.

Crazy OriShin became a villain! It would be fine if he was just lashing out at his mom, YJ and Grandpa but when he hurts weaker people, he is mean for no reason to a kid or becomes obssessed with SB just because she likes the robot, he steps over the line to plain cruelty.

I’m so bored with Grandpa I wished Shin had pushed him. Sorry. He is a robot anyway, he can’t feel guilt. Or can he? Besides, it would have been poetic justice, to be killed by the machine he liked better than his family.

A silly detail but still, RoRa is so smart, that watch is great for dramatic purposes but she would really never put his battery in such an easy place.

Also, I’m guessing people must have liked it but I found that ending of 30 super cheesy, how could he overide manual mode? Please don’t tell it’s the power of love show! If he had some kind of rule against hurting humans in a bad way this should have kicked him with grampa, I’m thinking they should say something like he is uncapable of really hurting his Priority Human even in manual mode. It’s not a perfect explanation but it’s the best I could come up so far. If anyone has any others before next please share! 🙂

    Asimov’s 3 Laws of Robotics?

I’m not watching this show so I don’t know if this applies, just been following comments and fan wall posts.

If he couldn’t harm humans he couldn’t have attacked SB or the granfather.

Thank you for this. Some really interesting (& great) points!! Points which I honestly try very hard not to think about lest it gets in the way of my viewing pleasure, lol.

I do think the love between human and robot is at times an odd equation, but when looking at the universality of the themes show is looking to explore, then the love is no longer bound by the impossible, rather it’s about the existing intricacies which surround human emotions and how it evolves (to varying degrees) in all aspects of life, no matter the relationship. So-bong’s love for shinrobot feels very human and gives it a believable and almost measurable quality. But that’s not to say shin-robot’s love is any less. It perhaps doesn’t channel itself like human emotions do, but the essence is still very much the same. He cares, protects, offers comfort all within the realms of what’s possible for him. And that for me is the sole reason for wanting to root for them.

    1
    1

I understand, I’m still not sold that he has true emotions because the story hasn’t shown me that much but her love is very believable.

The other explanation for overriding the manual mode could of course be that RoboShin had some help? The scene never switched back to DogShin, and stayed on the rooftop. But what if someone interfered when they realised DogShin wasn’t going to stop until So Bong was dead?

The first five minutes of ep 16 will prob. prove me totally wrong lol

    2
    1

Right, this could explain it but I doubt they will pass up the more romantic explanation of him being able to take control. This show sometimes has good surprises though!

      1

I find it entirely plausible that a learning AI, who has been attempting to thwart a device, would find a way around a hurriedly created code for a manual mode. And that the trigger for the switch would be the tears (note: Grandpa had none) that was its first and strongest rule. Then the priority human rule would have come out and the codes battling each other would have given it the loophole. Just a guess though. AI is well beyond my reality capabilities.
I do find it intriguing how SoBong never really forgets that he is a robot and likes him for what he is anyway. How is that different from someone who falls for a person, with say ALS? Or a seizure disorder? It does bring up questions of personhood, but loving someone in spite of their shortfalls is pretty powerful stuff.

    2
    2

I completely agree about So Bong’s love! She doesn’t see him for anything that he isn’t – or wants what he cannot give – and that’s what’s so amazing about her.

I had not thought that hugging rule might come in handy here, thanks for another explanation. 🙂

About SB not forgetting he is a robot I agree but like I said I just have a feeling she believes he has a personality, she has said herself that he is his own person. The show itself however has not yet convinced me he has one. A person with any kind of mental problem is still a person, has a past, has an identity. I’m never sure with Shin3 how much of his behavior comes from a program, from the nicest things he does to the worst, he can’t really take all the responsabillity. He’s able to make logical choices but where are his unique personality traits?

      0
      1

To play devil’s advocate: I think that’s where the learning AI comes in. If learning AI can write its own programming (and he has), then isn’t his personality stemming from the programming choices he is making?
I could also argue that we are all shaped by “programming” by our parents/village from an early age, and it isn’t until we are older that we start to choose which of the programs we keep and which we follow.
It’s a very interesting dilemma that the writer has presented, because it can be terrifying, and it’s something really close technologically speaking. It also really brings into question what really makes us human, because our DNA could be seen as a program of sorts.

        0
        1

I think it’s not very easy to explain but one more reason that leads me to believe he isn’t “his own person” is something we already knew and he keeps saying it. He has no ambition, which I guess also means he has no desire, for anything. Isn’t this at the very core of being human? From food to having purpose we want something, big or small, always. He doesn’t. Except when it’s convenient to make him miss his mom or SB, which is why this seems more like the result of a program than Shin3 actually having feelings.

I don’t quite understand why the fact that he is capable of evolving would necessarily give him the capacity or the reason to create something like a personality. Did he make any illogical choices like we so commonly do? Did he become contradictory like we do sometimes? If he did I would start believing he has some true emotions.

I know it’s a silly question, but I wonder why so many of these korean rooftops have green floors. Is it a rubber carpet? Paint? Tiles? Is it a tradition? Why?

I’ve wondered the same thing. My theory is to make it look like grass.

I once read that it was a type of paint intended to waterproof the cement roofs, and that green initially was the cheapest color to make it, and see that it had been applied properly. (I cannot even remember where I read this, so maybe it is wrong, but it sounded plausible)

It might be what the Japanese do: they literally build their buildings in a way that is sustainable and can grow and keep grass, among other flowers if desired, on its own… Apparently, that’s a thing

Come Hug Me – I’m still on the first eps but the teenage actors are really bad, the dialogue is corny, the music is even more corny. Show, I want to like you, get better! The psycho is great though.

The Best Moment to quit your job.

Has anyone here liked this? I gave ep1 a chance but found the first girl too passive and the bosses abusive. I don’t want 8 eps telling me bullying is fine.
