I’m not sure what I’m watching but I’m strangely fascinated and willing to strain my brain to make sense of it all — the plot, the characters, the pacing… Everything !

Yes!! I watched yesterday episodes 1-3 and I was like… wow… what I am watching… I love this super weird thing, whatever it is!!

I binged all 6 episodes and… Suuuuper weird. I have so many questions and I am convinced I won’t get answers to any!
But I’ll definitely watch the 2nd season when it comes out. 😁

The Beanie FanWall is a testament to how much we love our stoic Shi-Mok and hardworking Yeo-Jin. Everything that makes them happy makes us happy.

It’s ep7 that (finally!) got me hooked!
Yes! I love this feeling when all the seemingly unrelated plot lines slowly start to converge and the suspense is there!

I am sad to report that, 6 episodes into \”Forest of Secrets 2\”, I am neither intrigued nor excited. This makes me very sad, given how much I adored season 1.
☹️💔

Eun Soo…there I said it…her character bought a loose canon energy and her scenes with Shi Mok had a raw chemistry.

    0
    2

Sure, there is that. But mostly, it’s just that the plot itself doesn’t interest me. I love love love the character interactions (and I adore Beanies for posting those precious moments) but I am having a hard time caring for the actual plot. The Hanjo business issues. The police/prosecution corruption. Season 1 was genuinely interesting and exciting. There was a lot of tension, and yes, part of the tension was Eun-Soo’s meddling. I was 101% invested.

And here, I find myself simply coasting, praying the drama gods will grace our screens with more Shi-mok/Yeo-Jin interactions, but alas, those moments have been rare. Our violent crime team discovers our favourite weasel Dong-Jae’s car and my 1st thought was “isn’t there a csi team supposed to take care of this? Why are they the ones processing the scene?”. The 2nd thought was that his disappearance has (unfortunately) no impact on me, because the plot so far has failed to bring the tension, the urgency that is needed for me to truly care. Yes, I like Dong-Jae and it would suck if he died, but compared to the utter shock and sadness I felt when Eun-Soo died…

Maybe I should wait until it ends and binge-watch it?

      0
      2

think actual plot pretty much is police Vs prosecution with judiciary thrown in.. only for everyone to learn at the end of the day that collusion rocks!..

        1

There’s no feeling of being on edge this time for me. I mean Yeo Jin and Shi Mok are great but that’s just one part. I miss that whole don’t know who to trust, who is volatile enough to kill part.

        1
        1

Housemates and I were binge watching S1 (with me rewatching) and they didn’t like her for being too nosy the whole time. Had to slightly defend her without spoiling 😂 especially what happened to her then

      0
      1

Drama viewers tend to not like any other female they perceive as a threat to main female protagonists screen time subconsciously, observation on my part. She got a lot of hate because people pitted her with Yeo Jin back then which was unnecessary. She kept things interesting, her dynamic with Shi Mok had more layers to it but hey Yeo Jin made him smile so why is this girl with selfish agenda there, was everyone’s sentiment back then. I mean it made me a little mad back then. A character is allowed to exist that doesn’t strike a friendship or allyship with everyone.

        2
        1

that is a very good analysis of my feelings at the time.
On the 2nd watch of season 1, I came to appreciate her more, and yet, her meddling was truly misguided and still annoying.

          0
          0

Had the same impression on ep 1 and 2, but when episode 3 started to introduce Shi mok’s way of analysing the scene, My interest went back.Punches are subtle this season, and the writer seems to point out that what is supposedly a mundane and natural response (shimok reaching out to the chief prosecutor for help on the rental scam) can cause heavy implications. As CP Lee Chang joon pointed out, it only started with a dinner treat. I treat S1 as solving problems, while S2 is more about the theory 😂

    2
    1

Honestly, S1 plot was pretty boring for me too. The only exciting thing was who would betray, or help, whom and when. I didn’t really care about any of the characters except YJM character. I don’t know why I wanted him to turn out to be the mole from the beginning. And when they started to drop hints, that was when I started to care at last. This time around the lack of who will end up where probably takes away most of the tension.
P.s. (from a hiding place) I HATE the beginning of S1. It was just a constant replay and flashback of a murder case that I didn’t care about AT ALL. I only stuck with it because LJH made me laugh and YJM made me swoon. And I’m saying that as a person who nearly never roots for the bad guys.

    1
    1

I can understand you, but I’m still hooked.
S1 was about solving a crime, S2 is not about that.
It’s more similar to Life (the previous show by the same writer). Nothing seems to be happening but I can’t stop watching.
I guess the main point to me is how these exhausted characters can make a difference.

    1
    1

you’re right. similar to “Life” indeed. and I ended up enjoying it a lot, mostly for the character growth and development as well. and yes, our S2 characters are indeed exhausted… I wanna hug them!

      1
      1

I want to hug them and make them seat in a comfortable place and have a lovely meal together while we talk about little insignificant things that makes us happy. They need a break!!

it’s hilarious that we’re all noticing that Shi-Mok NEVER has time to eat a proper meal. ha ha ha

I have never been tempted by PPLs but these books aren’t made by some big brands selling their stuff by huge money while they are made in the same factories in Asian countries for 2 or 4 dollar wages as all those other things very cheap ( some of them are sewn in other countries, like mine in EU, where people are often not paid for 4 months and for 328€ net which doesn’t even cover living expenses they have to make hundreds of them). I am also tempted to buy them.

I think I saw it online that it’s available for global fans to buy! I think gmarket perhaps? I’m bad at remembering names and locations, but I recall going to a bookstore in Korea last year… let me try looking for it…

So I did some research and it seems gmarket global is currently selling the “The Boy Who Fed On Nightmares”, “Zombie Kid”, “The Cheerful Dog” and the 4th book which I don’t remember the English translation of. The last book that was in yesterday’s chapter is not released until the 31st Aug.

HAPPY TUESDAY, BEANIES!
I just read a delightful article on MyDramaList and felt the urge to share.
The premise: Stages of Dropping Dramas

Hi, guys! I\’m Kate, and I\’m addicted to dropping dramas.
Giving a drama a fair chance to draw me in and entertain me is not in my current nature. I just could not care less. How I went from never dropping any drama to dropping dramas on their first episode? Is such a change even possible? Yes, it is, ladies and gentlemen. Let me take you on a journey of how my dropping dramas habit evolves.

[quoted from the article]

Ha ha ha ha
This person’s system of dropping is so entertaining and definitely makes me feel better about dropping dramas 1 episode away from the end!

Have a read!

I didn’t understand how one can drop a drama with one or two episodes left but now that I’ve done it myself, i totally get it.

“Hi Bye Mama” was my 1st time dropping a drama with only 2 Eps left. Just couldn’t push through anymore.

I still haven’t watched the last episode of What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim and I have no desire whatsoever to watch it.

I actually watched that till the end, but yeah, I hear you.

My policy has always been to either watch the dramas from my actor/writer list OR look for Beanie thoughts on the show before watching. Option 1 has lead me to some mediocre dramas but never bad enough to make me drop them. Option 2 always has me thinking – why havent I watched this drama sooner??

I guess that’s a pretty longwinded way of saying, wow, I’ve been so fortunate. Or patient, any of those two. 😂

    3
    2

SAME! I look at actor and genre, writers not so much. Beanie recs have given me some amazing dramas that i would’ve never watched on my own. But sometimes i drop dramas cos of time or lost of interest which may or may not be the drama’s fault.

      2

Beanie Recommendations have almost never failed me!

Thanks for sharing! It was a great read! Really affirming my own dramas graveyard. :3
I used to feel guilty and very doubtful to drop a drama so early on, because a few do surprise me after the first few rocky episodes. but it’s so rare that that happens tho… So I learned to follow my gut reactions and try to feel no remorse/doubts when dropping a show. 😀

    1
    0

I like her bit about revisiting dropped dramas. I’ve revisited the Taiwan drama Miss Rose about six times and I just cannot finish it 😄 I think I should just let it go

    1
    1

it pained me a little but I finally had to let go of “Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung” and “Romance is a Bonus Book”, and remove both from my plan-to-finish list because, really, I do not plan to finish them at all, no matter how guilty I feel.

      1
      0

I’m still in the stage of not dropping dramas. 😛

    1
    1

I used to push myself and just finish the drama for the hours that I’ve invested in watching it but after doing it for the first time, it gets easier the second time😄

IONTBO ep 11
I really have a lot of admiration for the very consistent behaviour that the writers (and the actress) have gone with for portrayal of Ko Mun-Yeong. She\’s stayed true to the woman we met at the beginning: honest to her feelings, demanding of Gang-Tae\’s time and affection, calling out bullshit when she sees it, and treating Sang-Tae with the same shrewdness as she would anyone else — refusing to give him a pass in the name of autism. Even as she softens, it is really just that: softening but never bending into another form. She never misses an opportunity to express her defiant quirkiness and I love it!
\”Pay for my meal too!\”
I died laughing.
So when at the end, she says she wants a brother like him, watching him with a deep frown in her brow, looking legit pissed off, I believe her. I believe it all. Its not just that she\’s trying to get on his good side. She\’s genuinely not happy that he refuses her into their brotherly circle — Sang-tae\’s circle. And I love all the raw emotion on her face, the petulance even. She\’s sharp, never minces her words, not even with Sang-Tae and I\’m her for it!
Bless her consistency and the beautiful performance actress Seo Ye-Ji is gracing us with. It\’s sublime!

    Yes! Agreed!

    3

At the beginning when she was in bed and yelling at Kang-tae – he told her to count to 3 – and you could see her relax just through her subtle facial expressions.
She is truly amazing in this show.

Yep, Seo Ye-ji brought me here and I also love the rest of this wonderful cast.

I’m not sure who I love more. Ko Moon Young or Seo Ye Ji. 😅 I agree with everything that you have said. I hope the last few episodes do not jinx what I am about to say but KMY is probably one of the best written characters ever. And SYJ is simply breathtaking as KMY. She makes me feel all the different emotions that her character is going through, thanks in large part to the rawness of SYJ’s acting. Props also to the PD, writer, stylist, and makeup artist for just thinking of everything and helping give us this character.

    You expressed it beautifully. 😊

I\’m back and just on time for the July Movie Challenge, spurned by the awesome @purplesheesh !
Day 1: The Last Movie You Watched  \”A Whisker Away\” on Netflix.

I didn\’t really enjoy it, unfortunately, in spite being an anime fan.
On the other hand, “Weathering with You” was sooooo good! Other anime movie recommendations I watch recently:
Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms
The Garden of Words
Only Yesterday
The Boy and the Beast
Also, here’s a good list (with a lot that are not my type, but stil): https://jw-webmagazine.com/best-anime-movies/

Day 2: A Favorite Fantasy Movie  “The Avengers” (2012) or “Guardians of the Galaxy” (2014). I’ve honestly watched them one too many times.

I look forward to the next 29 days !!!

Hello Beanies,
It\’s been a while… Just here to rant about my KDrama blues of late…

I unofficially dropped \”Hi, Bye Mama\” weeks ago: I\’m 2 hours away from the end but I\’ve lost interest and couldn\’t be bothered. Not even for the year end Beanie Count.

Both \”Hyena\” and \”Itaewon Class\” were my weekly addictions while airing on Netflix and yet both ended in ways that were not quite what I had hoped for. The disappointment was real.

This week, I decided to binge-watch \”Find me in your memory\”, because I really liked Kim Dong-Wook in his last two projects, \”The Guest\” and \”Special Labor Inspector Jo\”. Unfortunately, the show lost its simple shine and I\’m now dragging myself through ep15, rewinding and pausing because I\’m distracted.

Which brings me to this: why is it so difficult to keep a good consistent pace till the end????? I swear it\’s like most of the shows I love to bits just crumble as soon as they hit the half-way mark. Whyyyyyyy??? 😭😭😭😭

I really don\’t know too many shows that we\’re able to pull off their 2nd half with the same powerful energy. As for giving a show the ending it deserves: that\’s almost a superhuman feat!

*sigh*

Why? 😭

*so many hours of sleep lost… For what?*

#endofRant

21

There are only a few dramas that had satisfying endings. It’s tough. Like you said, it’s almost a superhuman feat! It could also be because we like the drama so much that our expectations go real high and nothing could satisfy them. It’s a vicious cycle. Hang in there!

    10
    1

That happens to me a lot! I’m a relentless optimist, the struggle is real 😋

      5
      0

I can understand you so much.
I’m only live watching When my love blooms (I don’t count Good Casting because I’m mainly FF).
I’m watching old dramas that have been receiving beanie’s love and I’m ok with it.
But yes, I need a drama that can keep the second half as good as the first half.
    *sighs with you*

oh darn..that’s who he is.. the guy from ghost and coffee shop.. wow

    2
    0

Yup, peaking between episodes 10-12 and then going downhill happens a lot. Anyway, I still prefer kdrama to the series I used to watch that just pilled on season after season… most of the times I just ended drifting off into something new. I like finding closure in stories, saying goodbye before going into other unknown territories… and sometimes the ride is awesome!

    7
    1

I agree. There are very few shows that keep me interested past 1 season. I was genuinely surprised at how eager I was for “Kingdom 2” to come out. Then I heard that they’re making “Forest of Secrets 2” and I am eeeeven more excited!!!

      0
      0

Same. I’m the type to drop dramas even though I pnly have two eps left. A good ending is hard to find especially when they can’t bring back your wasted time 😂

    3

Ep14 of Hyena was sooooo satisfying!!! I\’m so pumped for the last 2 episodes next week!
❤️😎🤩😆😆😆😆😆

7
4

same here!! I can’t wait for them to kick Song’s ass.
I love how these two have grown on each other.. There is not a moment of lull in this drama.. I love it..
And where is the kiss scene?? Make out scene??

    3
    2

I was seriously hoping for kisses too but I also have to admit that the progression towards opening up to each other and trusting each other as lawyers and now as partner lawyers has very much compensated for the lack of kisses. And it’s definitely a natural progression to what we all hope for: for them to be romantically involved again and for good!

      3
      1

Also almost the entire team coming together to work at Choong and Guem Ja ready and actually looking forward to working with them was really heartfelt

        2
        0

I wanted them to kiss really badly but I understood that these episodes were more about Guem Ja opening up to him by trusting him and her confronting her father and moving towards closure.

Weird questions : how do actors/actresses currently filming our favourite airing shows protect themselves from COVID-19? How do they practice social distancing while filming??
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

5
4

South Korea has been much more vigilant about testing people for COVID-19 ever since it first began spreading there. They’ve been testing ~10,000 people EVERY DAY for weeks now. Some productions did take a break for a while, and I know many productions had cast and crew tested for the virus, but I’m guessing what they’re doing is making sure no one directly involved has the virus and going from there on deciding how to deal with it while filming.

From what I understand, though most of the Seoul population is self-isolating, things are still able to run more normally there in comparison to many parts of the world, because they had a much better handle on testing for the virus and tracking who spread it where.

    9
    0

I don’t know that they are doing social distancing in the same way.
    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1167376

I am worried about how scientists point out not to get too hopeful too soon as, like with the flu of 1918, they tend to bounce back when we think we have the all clear.

    4
    0

Many places in East Asia (S.Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan) have been able to react and flatten the curve in way better time and way better ways because they took early and drastic (military-like action). It sadly comes with past experience of dealing with SARS and MERS

    4
    0

My cousin’s daughter is studying a term in SK and in her IG account I can see she’s not precisely socially distancing.
It’s just like Mindy said. Their system is working better than in the rest of the world.
