How did nothing really even happen in that whole episode but I’m all depressed anyway? ugh. should have waited and binged the last 2 eps together. #RHGHR

I feel like it needs at least 2 more episodes to wrap up everything nicely… but I’m just hoping for a satisfying ending.
I still have no idea how it will end. But at least there’s a hint for a happy ending for the couple? I hope?

    1
    1

i feel the same! this is my least favorite kind of episode—a filler episode where the whole thing is just characters finding out things we, the audience, already know. it’s emotionally draining but also feels like a waste of time. the worst. and now they have SO MUCH to wrap up in the last episode that i fear it will be super rushed and unsatisfactory. ugh. i wish they had spent about 1/2 of episode 19 on all the things that took the whole episode, and used the rest of the time to start wrapping things up more solidly. i guess i can’t know for sure until i see the last episode, but it doesn’t feel like it’s going to be a smooth landing.

I have to disagree with you. More happened in ep 19 than the entire first four episodes haha. XD *kidding* But it was definitely a very eventful episode – everyone’s past/historyand plans came out in the open, the brothers turned against one another, GHR forgave her brother, the historians got one of Min’s people on their side. That’s…a lot of development. Except yes, there was nothing on the romance front. I’m sad the show is ending but LOVE this kind of political plot movement. 🙂 So I’m a happy camper.

    3
    2

I agree that the brothers turning against each other was a big development, but the rest of it just felt like motion to me — motion without action. Everyone’s plans are in the open, but none of them were surprising to us (the audience). We already knew all of it. We had to watch the characters catch up to us, which I always find frustrating. The chancellor seems to have joined the historians, but then he’s back to his usually shrivelly self when the ministers confront him. back where he started. GHR forgives JG, but that was almost less satisfying to me…like, it makes no difference to the plot, really. if it had happened earlier maybe she would have left home angrily or had some soul searching before she forgave him, but the whole resolution felt sort of gratuitously tacked on imho. Plus, we already knew his role in it. maybe if we hadn’t known that, it’d have been a bigger reveal and felt more impacting, but this just left me drained and sad.

following up, greenie 😉 — as someone who enjoyed the last episode: do you feel like we need several more episodes (not just 1) to satisfactorily wrap everything up now? i definitely do, but maybe that’s my general show-angst carrying over?

      4
      2

I feel that this episode should have happened 2/3 episodes back. And rim fighting to get back his throne and historians getting justice.

Hehe I’m with Blue on this. This episode and these developments should have happened 2 episodes ago. There’s so much left to resolve now I wonder how they’ll do it in one ep.

Also, to respond to above, I do think that a lot of movement happened (such as the historians’ decisions and their petition etc) but this episode mostly set us up for the finale. That might be why you & I can’t agree on its purpose – filler or essential to the plot. ^^ But essentially, this set up should have been established a couple of episodes ago, as you say. I agree with point.

        2
        0

I didn’t think this was a filler episode.
Prince Rim and brother – we kinda hoped the brothers won’t go against each other. But it was still sad to see how quickly the crown Prince changed his sense of justice to keep his throne.
The scene between GHR and her brother was so Heart breaking. We knew the brother did something bad, but still that he sealed the deal was very painful.
Also, we see that there are still loyal to ex-king people in the palace. So am very eager for tomorrow’s episode.

    2
    1

I also feel the same way! So many complicated feelings (and even more complicated relationships) … how are they going to resolve everything in 1 hour? Unless Netflix is going to pull another Arthdal and make a Season 2, but we all know how THAT worked. Can we petition the Drama Gods, ala historians, for an extension?

And… my poor Prince! In a few days, he got dumped by the love of his life, found out about his dad, was rejected by his brother, discovered both his Grandmother and his faithful Eunuch had been hiding the secret all his life, found out who he thought was his dad KILLED his real dead, AND voiced for the first time his feelings of being alone and set aside. Jeez that’s enough angst for a whole new drama.

Looking back they could’ve cut short some of the build-up (did we really need that much screen time romping in farflung villages and learning French phrases?) to develop the political backstory. If Prince Dowon had more time to come to terms with his roots, and confront all the people who’d been lying/hiding things from him all his life, then he wouldve stepped into Episode 19 with a plan and not just a reeling sense of betrayal.

And up to now I have NO CLUE where Sa-Hee stands.

Sorry I hijacked your post with my own thoughts. Clearly shaken by Ep 19!

      Well said.
I mean the betrayal of Seum-bo deserved screentime. I would think that is the hardest thing for Rim to handle since he spent 20 years of his life with him.

I really wish this had happened 2 episodes back. I wanted to see crown prince conflicted with his decision, Rim fighting back, Dowager and Rim joining hands etc. and of course we know nothing of Sa-Hee yet.

Two deeper, more general thoughts on Rookie Historian. No spoilers, really; these are more thematic thoughts.

1) The absence of mothers in this show is fascinating in light of the underlying plot of women being in charge of their lives. The Dowager Queen is the closest to a mother, and she is a grandmother, but we don\’t see anyone functioning primarily AS a mother. Also, a lot of these characters are without mothers (GHR? Rim? Min? Jae-kyung?). I should say more about this…I feel like I\’m just dropping it in here and then walking away…but I don\’t have any solid conclusions. Just that it makes me wonder if the writers (unconsciously perhaps) see motherhood as in conflict with a woman\’s desire to \”choose her own path\”? (super speculative I know….as I said…it\’s not a solid conclusion. just a funny ommission in the drama that i keep noticing.)

2) This is sort of a spoiler, I guess, but it\’s minor (not really related to plot): \”The Story of Ho-dam\” is technically a novel, but in episode 18 GHR asks how much of it is true; it\’s alarmingly close to the truth, we know. In this episode we also find out that those who overthrew the king were hoping to alter the royal historians\’ records. So again we come back to this idea of novels and recorded history being not as different as the beginning of the show seemed to want us to think. I like this evolution of ideas very much. I like that we are first asked to consider the contrast between novels and history, and I like that we are gradually led into comparing them more and more.

2b) I like too, the very subtle undercurrent that’s building. We’ve seen how novels aren’t real life, and how history isn’t always real life… but we’re watching A DRAMA. none of this is real life. it’s perfectly reasonable (in fact, i would argue, it’s technically more reasonable than not) for certain things to happen in this show not because they are realistic and might happen in real life…but precisely because they don’t or would not. Those things might not happen in real life; they might happen only in fairy tales…or kdramas…but guess what we’re watching 😉 <3

anyway, come on out happy ending 😉

Yes, I’ve also been thinking about the absence of biological mothers. The show is deeply ambivalent about marriage; it’s the women who sacrifice and suffer. It makes the series feel like a Disney film filled with motherless protagonists. Even the Dowager Queen is not the king’s biological mother and seems to hate him. And the poor crown princess is manipulated into a lonely, loveless union where has no opportunity to make her own family.

At the same time, we have men who stepped up to parent children who needed them. Goo Jae Kyung raised Hae Ryung and Eunuch Heo Sam Bo raised our pretty princeling. But both men have also hidden the truth from their charges.

“Even the Dowager Queen is not the king’s biological mother and seems to hate him. And the poor crown princess is manipulated into a lonely, loveless union where has no opportunity to make her own family. ”
yes to this. the DQ not being his real mom is so interesting in light of this. and then also the crown princess being unable to become a mother is interesting too. whether the writers meant to make a statement about motherhood, it seems like they are doing it after all

i like too what you say about the men who’ve stepped up to fill the maternal role. its interesting. even the DQ acting as the king’s mom all this time.

      1
      0

I felt that notion about mother’s role or lack thereof strongly too but you made it so clear..I wonder how these characters would have ended up if they each had a strong mother figure in their lives. Now when i think of it,they all seem like half orphans..some even full..for a drama that emphasize womens’ intelect it shows many facets of father figures..

    2
    1

right? exactly. a lot of half orphans, and i can’t quite tell how meaningful that is. is it just the writers couldnt be bothered? or is there a message?

      2

        0

I think including mother figures would have complicated the show. If they were going to include them, they must have some kickass mothers lined up going with their theme of strong female characters, with the risk of them outshining GHR and somewhat obscuring what they want to deliver.

Some thoughts on Rookie Historian episode 18… in comments because SPOILERS

1
5

    SO MANY SPOILERS.

Through my tears, I have these thoughts. In no particular order:

    1) To all the beanies who got that the Dowager was trying to blame Councillor Min for the ambush: hats off. Nicely noted.

    2) I love that GHR’s father and Rim’s father were BFF (and not, say, the same person)

    3) Wait, what does Sa-hee know about Councillor Min that makes her unafraid of him? Do we know? Did I miss something?

    4) I love Jin trying to pretend he remembers Rim’s birth just to comfort Rim. (I say again: give me a Prince Jin spinoff). Also, we do find out that the queen stayed with her parents for a few months when she should have been pregnant…and I get that the show is trying to explain how a royal baby could be born with no notice…but I’m still not satisfied. THAT queen wasn’t THE queen at the time. So she could live offsite etc, no biggie. But surely there would have been…A LOT… of hullabaloo months before all this drama when the actual queen was determined to be pregnant with the king’s firstborn?

    5) Did we already know that Rim had a dream wherein the King stabbed him? I am having flashbacks to Moon Lovers Ryeo. Pls do not let this show end thusly.

    6) Why doesn’t Rim just go ask the Dowager all his questions?

    7) The current king is SUCH a coward. Like. Such. I am 100% with the Dowager when she yells, “WHY IS MIN IK-PYEONG STILL ALIVE?”

    2
    2

      # 1. We told you Nicole. We told you ;).

#5. Yep. Rim had the dream after his father took away his books are writing materials when he found out he was writing romance novels.

Seriously, the tears flowed this episode. Rim, yeah, someone just LOVE that dude. Seriously, how can you not.

      3
      1

My heart’s breaking for poor Rim once again. That scene where Hae Ryung comforts him as they cried together is so sad, yet so beautiful.

I’ve always been curious about Rim’s mom, he thought that the current king’s wife is his mother right? Rim never once mentioned her even though we see her alive and well when the royal family visited Queen Dowager together.

Two eps left! Hope they can tie up all the loose ends nicely.

a propos of nothing, unrelated to anything: sometimes i out of the blue remember the moment when Kim Bum shows up with gray (silver) hair in The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry, and honestly that is one of the most underrated moments in a drama, imho.

Lately I\’ve mostly been working on my work computer and my phone, but today I opened up my personal laptop, and I found the following \”random thoughts\” in an open notepad file. It\’s my thoughts after episode 16 of Rookie Historian (so, not the latest episode), but I still thought I\’d post it. #levelmeupsoonplease

Random Thoughts I Have on Rookie Historian

There is one moment where the potential brides are all speaking in front of the Dowager Queen, and Hae-ryung looks like she\’d like to speak up, to say something, to do something–but she pauses and resumes writing; she realizes she can\’t do anything. And I got to thinking: Writers are often accused of being nothing more than dreamers, of being people who aren\’t actually \”doing\” things but who just imagine things and write about them. And Rim fits that stereotype very well—as Maehwa he writes romantic novels but he himself has literally zero experience of love. But historians share a strangely-parallel fate, this show shows us. As much as Hae-ryung would like to act, to jump into the fray, she has to sit back and simply write. Both kinds of writers are in a sphere of inaction. I dislike the truth this hints at; as a writer, I want to believe I can be both a dreamer and a doer, but I think the show does a good job of highlighting some of the tension therein. The show does a lot to contrast novelists and historians, but I think it\’s also very intent on showing the similarities between the two. I think it wants us to remember that all written record–fictional or not—isn\’t real life. Where the show will take this thread, I\’m still curious to see.

Honestly, the hopeless romantic in me hopes that the shows goes in this direction: all written records are in contrast to real life; they are not themselves real life. and because they are not themselves real life, “history” is as fanciful and biased as a novel. both are pictures of real life but not actually real life. but by that token, even the things in novels can become real life. ERGO GHR AND RIM CAN GET MARRIED *AND* HAVE LIVES THEY LOVE

Rookie Historian: also does the dowager know that GHR is who Rim loves?!? that snack time convo was very suspicious imho

3
9

It wouldn’t surprise me if she does.

Or she just thought it would be nice for Rim to have someone around that was around his age for his birthday.

    1
    1

hehehehehe so either she’s a super cunning queen whose seen it all—or a nice grandma who just loves her boy 😉

i’m betting she knows. the eunuch is probably on her payroll. remember how he staged that dream from Rim? that had to be under her order. so maybe he’s told her their connection too. (i think both eunuch and DQ genuinely love Rim tho)

      2
      1

So that means he knows about his wife as well. I was wondering all this time if she was keeping him in the dark. Naw, Seo-bo is too smart for that.

        2
        0

I think she does know, or at least have some suspicions about it. She must know that Rim doesn’t interact with many women except the court ladies and female historians. And it seems like her court lady is updating her regularly about what happens around the palace, so she probably knows he interacted the most with Hae Ryung.

    2
    1

I do not think much goes on without the dowager Queen knowing. She didn’t show any surprise when Rim told her he already had a woman in his heart.

    2
    1

Since you mentioned ‘snack time’ i’m guessing you have already watched ep 33/34. Do you also think queen dowager was the mastermind behind the attack on prince Dowon? I don’t know what she hoped to achieve but i have a feeling it’s not councillor Min but her.

    1
    1

my latest Rookie Historian theory—in comments because SPOILERS!!

4
27

    Ep 17 SPOILERS YALL.

ok so i’m thinking that the attack/ambush was planned by the dowager. i think she wanted an excuse to keep rim in that villa for long enough that he’d figure out the truth about himself.

also would not have minded if the king has just taken out a sword and beheaded councillor min right there on the spot. i’m so annoyed with him. but whyyyy does the king keep rim alive?? i mean IM SO GLAD, but why?

so ho-dam and GHR’s real father were at Seorowan together, right? and jae-kyung saved GHR? and i guess the stress of the news of her husbands death probably sent Rim’s mom into labor with him. (who is his mom then? moms don’t really figure much into this show do they)

    3
    5

I believe she planned it as well. But I think she did it to get rumors about Min to go around. We know what that man is capable of, why not murder. He has a hand in one son’s death, why not again. She has been biding her time and I also think that she has enough on the King to keep him in check and for him not to have told Min about Rim’s true linage.

But this does make for a interesting predicament when Jin finds out he is not the rightful Consort. There has been no conflict with these brothers and you just feel that it is coming.

      3
      1

But if Min doesn’t know about Rim’s true lineage, why would he plan an ambush (or why would she think that an ambush would be blamed on him)?

YES I am biting my nails related to the brotherly-conflict that is surely coming. It’s interesting to me that Jin has been the acting king all this time—so it’s going to feel like a bigger blow to him if he has to step down… and it seems like it might be hard to justify enthroning a “naive kid” who hasnt shown any interest in politics over Jin, who’s been managing quite well. (assuming Rim even wants to be king, which…does he?)

        3
        1

Min did figure it out (and was pissed that it was kept a secret from him), which is why the King went off on him (because Min was the 1st person he thought of on the ambush and things do not stay quiet inside those walls for long. Just one word from someone and dominoes fall). Min’s next course of action is to find out why the King kept it from him all this time,

“(assuming Rim even wants to be king, which…does he?)”

The Queen Dowanger isn’t giving him a choice in the manner.

          4
          6

i agree about the Queen Dowager not giving him a choice. It was SO OMINOUS the way she said “when Rim is king” (or “until Rim is king” something like that.) I was like…whoa she’s not here to play.

I don’t think they counted on Min learning Rim’s secret, but the more I think about it, I do think the Dowager must have expected Min would be blamed for the assault (I mean, who else would?) BUT I still think her true motive was to give Rim enough time to be sequestered at that villa…which has a random picture of the former king still hanging. I mean, that was kinda weird, right?

            2
            0

I would only think that picture would be weird if the Queen was not so cunning.

Add to that patience, and she is a deadly combination.

She is angry her son is gone and she wants everyone involved to pay for it. GHR’s brother does not seemed to be longed for the world by the end of the series.

            3
            0

@larelle79 he is not long for this world 😂😂😂 you are SO right. poor guy. i guess. i mean let’s hear his tragic story but i feel like it’s gonna be bad.

            2
            0

Not only his portrait, but a very tall candle burning in front of it, so someone has been keeping that candle lit in memory of the deposed king.

            0

            @lindag ohhhh! you’re so right!!!

            1
            0

@lindag Good eye on the candle.

            2
            0

Very interesting theory. But Second Councillor Min didn’t deny it when he was accused. If he didn’t do it, why wouldn’t he say so? On the other hand, wouldn’t he shoot to kill?

      0
      2

Min admitted himself that he is not a pleasant person and that is why he has no friends. The man knows what people think of him but with his eye on bigger things, he is just rolling with it, until he gets what he wants and then he will take those naysayers down.

Dude can play a mean game of poker with that face.

        2
        1

i think he didn’t deny it because he wants to see who it really is. i also thought maybe he was sort of denying it by mentioning the dowager queen. i don’t think he could outright accuse her—that’s gotta be treasonous—so he’s biding his time.

        1
        1

It is kinda amazing how much he and the Queen are alike in their thought process.

          2
          0

I’m guessing she planned it too, she didn’t seem all that surprised when the ambush happened. Maybe to later start rumors that Councillor Min is the one behind it. Or to get people suspicious about why they would target Rim, a naive prince with no political interest (and we saw the historians starting to get curious already) so they will start digging out the truth about his real identity?

Not sure if it was for Rim to discover the truth himself, since the reason he found that place with the former king’s picture is because of the dream he had, and she can’t control his dreams.

Although if it’s indeed her, how cunning is she that she would let Rim get injured like that just to achieve her goal..

      2
      3

“maybe to get people suspicious about why they’d target Rim” — i can see that. that makes a lot of sense to me. i definitely think the whole trip was designed to bring his heritage to light.

        2
        0

This makes sense and as far as Rim’s dreams go, @anothernicole theory about Seo-bo is something to consider as well. We know that he is underfoot of Rim day and night. He could be telling him all sorts of things while he is asleep.

I still think about the dream he had after the meeting with the King about the books he was writing. That dream just did not come out of nowhere. It gave a good idea of how the legitimate King died….and it was in front of the house that Rim and GHR went into to see the portrait.

        2
        0

It shows that she is ruthless. She doesn’t care much for Yi Rim as a person she cares for his identity as her precious son’s sole living heir.

        1
        1

i disagree that she doesn’t care for him as a person—but i DO agree that she sees him as a means to an end. Her love for him as a person is definitely not going to keep her from using him to the max

          1
          1

I was thinking about Rim’s mother as I was watching the episode too, but I’m guessing they’re not going to make it into a big reveal or anything.

What I’m wondering is how anyone hid the truth about Rim’s birth from Councillor Min for so long. Obviously for Rim to have been born and then believed by everyone to be the son of the current King, someone in the palace must’ve had to be pregnant at the time and directly linked to the King… right? If not, wouldn’t it be completely obvious that Rim isn’t his son? Or did they just get rid of everyone and anyone related to the deposed King? 😂

Good theory on the ambush! I thought it was weird the Queen was so calm. She was more mad during that scene with Jaekyung than she was at the thought of someone trying to assassinate Rim, whom she intends to put on the throne. By that logic, it totally makes sense that she’s the one behind the whole thing.

      1
      1

ok so i had a theory about this a while back (which has basically been disproven, like all my drama theories….how is it possible to be so consistently wrong???) — that she was the real queen’s son (the queen + someone else) and the king had adopted him to cover up the fact that his wife had an affair. obvi that’s out the window now, so I am left wondering the same thing as you.

the only conclusion i can give is that there is a LOT of secrecy in this palace and a lot of people sort of concealed — the crown princess keeps to herself, Rim is obviously hidden away, etc etc. So maybe the conspiracies lasted a while and maybe the dethroned king himself hid his pregnant wife? like maybe he knew a coup was coming and he wanted the baby to live, so he never told anyone she was pregnant? i srly doubt the show will get this in depth but…. (altho honestly if a reigning queen is pregnant with the firstborn of the king that seems like it’d be IMPOSSIBLE to hide. thats not a commonplace birth).

has anyone seen the c-drama The Rise of Phoenixes? is it any good?

It’s a REEEEEEEEAAAAAAALLY REEEEEEAAAAAAAAAALLY slow burn drama 😅😅 It’s either you have to binge it all at once to get the satisfaction you want because the burn is so slow, or just be super patient with it lol I was only 1/3 of the way through before I set it down for a break and haven’t had the time or motivation to go back to it yet 😅😅

I watched all of it and didn’t care for it. I was never a fan of the main guy and I don’t know if it was the actor or just the character. He just came off as weird through most of it. Even though it’s considered a romance, there was very little actual romance. And overall it’s just slow. And the ending was one of the biggest bullshit endings ever. I just rolled my eyes at it and said whatever and moved on.

    @bebeswtz @trinpie thank you! that’s what i was wondering. i’ll pass heh 😁

So I finished Moment of Eighteen. I did not expect to cry that much at the end. I did ok throughout the show, but the last couple episodes did me in. Also, I didn\’t expect to find the ending as satisfying as I did. It was a little ambiguous, a little strangely-timed (I thought), but also left me with just the right feeling. I will miss those kids and Kang Ki-young so much.

Also all my hats off to the boy who played Ma Hui-young. Not since Forest of Secrets\’s Lee Chang-joon have I been so torn over and invested in a villain. LCJ still ranks as my favorite villain in anything ever, but MHY is on the list, too. I didn\’t get a chance to do a write up for the theme-of-the-month on villains, but one thing I love about kdramas is how complex the villains are. I like that they are given an arc, like the protagonists, and I like that that arc includes a lot of inner moral debate. I really liked seeing that debate translated into a youth version, too.

I just watched this scene (I’m at episode 8). It’s shaping to be quite a relaxing drama, with moments of action and suspense. It’s also pretty. I love Prince Dowon’s secluded palace and garden.

What rock have I been living under???? How did I not realize that Moment of Eighteen is the same “youth JTBC drama with the-one-and-only, never-disappoints, always-worth-the-wait Kang Ki-young” that I’ve had on my to-see-list for forever??? AAHHH! starting it STAT.

@yyishere should submit a theme-of-the-month post this month about an errand boy hehehe

What is the theme of the month for September? I can’t come to DB as often as I used to, I think I miss the announcement for this month’s theme.

i had to look for it, too! it’s “hey that’s me” again (that was the august theme, too)—a particular character or scene where you saw yourself. I’m being tongue-in-cheek a bit about YY, but it still struck me as a funny juxtaposition of the timing and our “errand boy revolution” (as it were).

actual conversation i had with a person i know IN REAL LIFE:

Person who I know but not super well and DID NOT KNOW was on dramabeans: hey do you like korean dramas
Me, trying to play it cool all nonchalant-like, totally not having a panic attack or anything: ugh yes haha way too much
Person: haha! i like them way too much too. do you post on dramabeans? are you an errand boy?
Me, dead: 😬

y’all. this is the SECOND person in my real life to talk to me about dramabeans. if there are any more of you, please fess up now 😅

But in all seriousness: this person and I were not close before, but then we gushed excessively for a while about dramas and life in general, so I feel like we are totally friends now, and that is 100% worth it. ❤️❤️❤️

Seriously, how cool is that! When people ask me “so what do you now that you are retired” and I reply “watch Korean dramas”, I get this stare like “for real?” Now I say I am studying how to speak Korean… Another reason I get this “huh?” look is due to that fact I live in the SE part of the US, not near any large cities. Very few Asians or least I have not seen many, maybe they are inside watching K-dramas?

@kethysk @keiko @stpauligurl it was a weird combo of feelings, but in the end, i was relieved. in the past, when people have found out that i watch kdramas, i’ve taken a lot of flak for it. so i try to keep my kdrama life a bit secret. so i was pretty nervous at first. but it ended up well 😀

(this person doesn’t live near me, so we can’t have face-to-face kdrama bonding times, but its nice to have a friend out there who understands. (she’s actually my only real-life friend who understands–the other person who has mentioned dramabeans to me, mentioned it in passing a while back, but doesn’t watch kdramas really. she had just stumbled across the site at some point.)

Actually I know a real person who lives in a town about 30 miles away from me. We’ve met twice and both times had such fun talking/spazzing about dramas. The last time was at her daughter’s reception at their house to meet the new SIL. She was busy, but when she finally stopped and we were chatting about this and that, then all of a sudden “I’ve been seeing Watcher! OMG what a great show!!” and on and on, but unfortunately I was watching everything but that.
But it was fun how animated we both got. She was the hostess and I didn’t know anyone but her and her daughter….
Still the bonding is something else isn’t it, when we meet another ‘addict’ in real life!

my kdrama addiction is no secret but i’m totally with you about how blissful it is to ave someone who understands. I had a group of friends in school who shared my love for kdrama but in university i only have one person and he’s not the gushing type.. just enjoys the dramas i recomend..small blessings..which makes me value you guys in dramabeans even more❤️

Dear beanies who are watching Rookie Historian: Do you think Rim and Hae-ryung will end up together in the end…or no? I\’ve been assuming that they will end up together–romantic comedy, birth secrets, etc. etc. etc. BUT sometimes you do get a curveball-ending, and maybe the overall message of the story (real life vs. novels, for one) will require them to be apart? Just curious as to what beanies think will ultimately happen.

To me it always felt like a fairy tale and that they won’t get together. Due to class difference and her need to be independent (not married according to society standards).
Not sure where the show is going though.
Will Rim sacrifice his love and become a king that the country needs?

    2
    1

Yeah, I am starting to see things this way, too. It’s always been *incredibly* unrealistic, and I think I was approaching it as the suspension-of-disbelief one uses with fairy tales… but we’ve been told time and time again in this show that Hae-ryung doesn’t like fairy tales, that real life isn’t a novel, and even the comparison between history and fantasy.

      3

I can’t see it happening to be honest, I’m suprised no one hasn’t said anything about hae ryung and the prince in the court. Surely someone else has seen them together all the time.
Part of me is still rooting for historian min to have a romance with hae ryung…

    4
    4

I can see the palace overlooking it or just writing it off as an affair between a prince and a servant–those had to be super common. but if they knew how serious it was, yeah, no chance, right? but i’m with the part of you that’s still rooting for them. hope springs eternal 🙂

From what I gathered, the king himself knew. Didn’t he threaten Rim to harm the historian, including the one in that room when he confessed to helping the foreigner.
I think people know and don’t care. The prince can do anything as long as it doesn’t harm the kingdom or cause disruption to politics.

      3
      1

Yeab I guess rim has been ignored by the king so no one else respects him or cares for him.

oops just realized i misread you, ayan. you’re rooting for min/ghr. it’d be cute i agree—but i meant i was hoping for rim and ghr 😁

Rim and ghr are super cute so I do like them together as a couple. I want historian min to find happiness too 😁

I think Historian Min still hasn’t let go of his wife’s death. He’s not ready, I think…

At this point in the drama it seems unlikely but I still think the writer might find a way for their relationship to work somehow, although I can’t figure out the how right now. It’s true that the drama has been highlighting the contrast between their personalities & approach to life (real-life vs. novel) but it would be nice if they can find a way to meet in the middle somewhere and having the best of both worlds.

Also, I feel like the drama has been advocating progressiveness or breaking the norm in the Joseon era so far (females as historians, vaccines, Western influences) so if Jin or Rim ends up ruling, they might find a way for Hae Ryung to still have a career or do something for the people instead of just staying & looking pretty as the princess/queen. Maybe?

    5
    1

agree with this. will be interesting if the shoe chooses to blend real life and novels—because honestly that’s kinda what written history is. as unbiased as our historians try to be, the reality is that recorded history is as much a biased narrative as any other written work. (am i reaching desperately for a philosophical route than enables these two cuties? yes. yes i am. 😉😅)

Sort of has a WWW Search feel to it.

Historian Song made her choice, with the CP’s help. She put literally everything on the line for her choice. What GHR will do, what her choice will cost… only 4 more episodes!

    1

I hope with all my heart for them to end up together but with only one week to wrap up all story arcs i don’t see the show sparing one episode for their love to have that happy ending we are waiting for. But if they make it an open ending my rooting heart will wither up and die😭

I watched the 2008 Hong Kong version.

Or if you want something more visually up to date, there’s a movie trilogy that began 2012
