Rewatching has been on my mind lately and I was wondering about everyone else’s habits. I have made a numbered list of investigative questions for K-drama Science:
1) Do you rewatch dramas? Why/why not?
2) Are there any shows you find yourself *constantly* rewatching?
3) Which shows?
4) This isn’t a question. I am just considering the logistics of stockpiling comfort-watches. That’s a thing right?
5) Anyone else done nanowrimo? How has it gone? Do you have a novel? (is it a secret identity/epistolary romance? Can someone please write one or rec me one I haven’t already read/watched? At a loose end since Dash and Lily reminded me how much I love that genre) ps I don’t think this is a question anymore oops
Here is some coffee humour wrapped in Foil, Arms and Hog (in case you haven’t discovered them yet):
1. Yes, because just like rereading a favorite book it’s like visiting a good friend.
2. I used to rewatch Goblin, but nowadays it’s Because This Life is Our First. Se-hee is the best.
3. Oops, I already answered this one. See #2.
4. Yes, yes it is. Also, please publish this stockpile because comfort watches are much needed.
5. Umm, no. Writing? Uhhh, sure I meant to do that. I do love a good epistolary novel. Have you read The Flatshare? Roommates who’ve never seen each other and communicate via sticky notes (oh hey, BTIOFL might have that too…). Umm, not fiction, and I’m sure you’ve probably read it, but 84 Charing Cross Road is a delight, both the book and the film.
Coffee humor always welcome, and no I had not discovered Foil, Arms and Hog yet. Thanks!
Love this! Sorry for my laaaaate reply. RL has been keeping me away 😭
I looked up The Flatshare and have it ready to read on my ereader now, very looking forward to it! And also put 84 Charing Cross Road on the list! I’m not as widely read as I think XD I have a tendency to stay in YA, but even then, within very specific niches. It’s a wonder I ever fell into kdrama, frankly! Thank you so much for the recommendations (and feel free to push more anytime – are you on goodreads? Did I already ask you that? My brain is a sieve right now.)
1. Yes, because sometimes you just really miss a drama in your life. Especially if you’re feeling down and need something to comfort you. Something familiar. There are a select few dramas I do this for, though, and some of them involve, um, a certain actor…
2. YES.
3. I think I’ve rewatched Because This Life is Our First… 6 times? Plus all the random scenes I’ve watched a ton. While it was airing and for months after I think I watched some scenes over 20 times. 🤭 Other ones I’ve rewatched in the past few years in part or full are Dal-ja’s Spring (again….. Certain actor….), My Ajusshi, and I’m Not a Robot. I’m planning an Into the Ring rewatch next month!
Clearly there are certain things I go to for comfort, LOL.
1) I used to, but not in these last few years. Apparently I was too easily distracted watching something I’ve watched before, my fingers just itched to constantly press the fast-forward button. I do re-read recaps and my comments on shows I loved though, just to get nostalgic on a good story telling when I was in a drama slump.
2&3) Once upon a time, it used to be fun romcom like Reply 1997, Queen In-hyun’s Man, or Jealousy Incarnate.
4) Even though I’m not doing that anymore, it makes perfect sense to stockpiled comfort-watches. Sometimes we just need a familiarity of a story that we know would end well. I think this is exactly why I gravitated towards C-drama these days. They have several popular stories that got adapted into several different format (from novel to manga, anime, drama, and audio drama). And while it’s not exactly a rewatching experience, I think it provided the same level of comfort.
1: I rewatch a few favorite shows, usually when I’m showing them to a friend who hasn’t seen them. But I OFTEN re-watch favorite parts of certain episodes, whether or not the rest of the show is worth a rewatch. I have a folder in my PC of just favorite episodes, mostly with the time where the good stuff starts as the tail-end of the file name.
2: No. Just bits of them.
3: Past total rewatches (in no special order)
You From Another Star
Queen In-hyun’s Man
Masters Sun
School 2015
Bring It On Ghost
Girl K
Splash Splash Love (an easy rewatch because it’s so short)
Signal
I’m Not a Robot
Queen’s Classroom
Voice (season 1 only!!!!!!!!!!!)
Mystery Queen (season 1)
Faith
Partial episodes (most favorite and/or most-recent rewatches first):
Mother ep 14 – the kid’s testimony at the trial starting 44 min
Pegasus Market ep 1 – the singing/dancing about a hour in
Girl’s Generation ep 1 – the ABBA bit at the start
Strong Woman Do Bong-soon – end of ep 8 & start of 9
Big ep 3 – 24 min 25 sec – phone getting fixed thru Suzy’s trip from LA
My Fellow Citizens ep 2 – 7 min (U-turn) & ep 3 25 min (fight where FL kicks a**)
Amnesia of the Alhambra ep 1 – Hyun Bin marching back & forth trying to start the game
Girl K ep 2 – training montage near the start
Miss Korea ep 20 – 48 min 35 sec – at the gas station
Surplus Princess ep 1, 2 & especially 10 – arrivals & anything with Terminator music.
While You Were Sleeping ep 20 2 min – Suzy’s scarf handover
Faith – the ML’s visit to “heaven” in ep 1 and the FL’s visit in the finale
Mask ep 1 – deer in headlights & cliffhanger at the start
I’m impressed by the level of detail here! I recognise a few scenes that are my own favourites! I also do this. I keep detailed notes and timestamps so I can come back to the exact moment that gave me most joy!
1. Yes, I rewatched dramas all the times. There are certain shows that make me want to watch over and over again. A lot of those shows are what people would call sad or depressing (which they are), but I find them strangely comforting. Sometimes I just put them on in the background while I do something else.
2. Yes. There are shows I routinely rewatch every year.
3. A few ones on the top of my head:
– Life is Beautiful is currently holding the record for most rewatched. I’m pretty sure I have rewatched all 63 episodes at least 6 times ever since I discovered it 7 years ago.
– Another OHY, Forest of Secret 1 and My Mister each has 4 rewatches under its name.
– Seven Day Queen and Marriage not Dating each has 3 rewatches. Oh, how I wish Yeon Woo Jin would appear in a good drama which is on par with his talent like these two?!? All of his recent dramas sucked.
5. I’ve never done nanowrimo, but shout out to Dash and Lily! It was a cute show.
Wow, that’s a truly impressive schedule, and I love your choices! Do you have any new dramas that have found their way into your rewatch rotation? Plus, I always find depressing things are easier on the emotions in a rewatch.
1. Yes, if the drama was either excellent (My Ahjussi), an enthralling escape for me (Hotel del Luna) or just plain silly fun (Mary Stayed Out All Night, yes, I know I’m strange).
2. Yes. Mary Stayed Out All Night and parts of Healer and Chicago Typewriter.
3. Mary Stayed Out All Night, Healer and Chicago Typewriter (I don’t often rewatch the entire series because I fast forward the characters that annoy me).
5. Not Start Up.
I love that Mary Stayed Out All Night is on your list! I haven’t watched it myself, though I know it’s got an iffy reputation – I’m all for liking what you like and not being sorry!
(I mean, unless it’s racist or something, obviously)
1. I do. Probably for the same reason I re-read books I enjoy – because I enjoyed them 😂 plus you often see different things on rewatches. Also if I’m showing them to someone else.
2. Yes
3. The Greatest Love (I have lost count of how many times I’ve seen this)
Oh My Venus (also this)
My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (I have watched this twice this year alone)
….many others. Basically if I liked it the first time I’m going to rewatch at very least bits of it.
4. Totally a thing! But then I find I don’t actually want to watch any of them because I’m too mopey to make up my mind.
5. I have done it in this past but not this year because I have three children under the age of six and a job and kdramas to watch 😅 I officially finished once. There was much (much) padding of a very silly fairy tale. I was pleased with myself though. I cannot think of any romances to recommend.
5. Awww!! But still, dramas wait and children grow! The good thing about a show you’ve watched already is that that story has made its way inside you, it’s not like one of those you keep meaning to get to, so you have that constant niggling feeling of missing out on something. I hope you get the time to rewatch to your heart’s content again, and thank you for sharing!
PS Yes a FA&H fan! If you haven’t already, you should also check out Michael Spicer (MrMichaelSpicer) who is GREAT.
1. Yes. For so many reasons, rewatching a drama is the best part of watching dramas. Revisiting an old favorite is like getting a nice warm hug from a good friend. It’s so comforting. There’s also the fun of poking holes in a not-so-great drama as well.
2 & 3. Yes, there are several Healer, Coffee Prince, Girl Who Sees Smells, Goong, there’s a several more but theses are a few that pop-up to mind.
4. Comfort watches are what I’m here for. I watch new dramas just to supplement my running list of comfort watches.
1. Yes. Constantly. A show you love will remain good no matter how many times you see it, and you might see it differently every time.
2. Oh God, yes. Gokusen. Hana Kimi. Buzzer Beat. Thirty but Seventeen. Shining Inheritance. Age of Youth 2. I Hear Your Voice.
1) Do you rewatch dramas? Why/why not?
I used to. I rewatched HEALER like 3 times in a row after it aired to fight withdrawal (that didn’t work). Now I don’t have enough time, or am so disappointed/feeling meh by the time they end that I don’t care to watch them again.
2) Are there any shows you find yourself *constantly* rewatching?
Nope, mainly scenes here and there. Like 15 minutes of Episode 21 of JUMONG. I will constantly listen to OSTs though!
3) Which shows?
I never pass on a chance to recommend MISAENG to a family member and end up rewatching with them.
4) This isn’t a question. I am just considering the logistics of stockpiling comfort-watches. That’s a thing right?
I haven’t tried it, but a ready-made list of comfort watches sounds wonderful!
I did exactly the same with Healer. I think it’s my most rewatched show 3x while airing (raw, viki subs, DF subs…considered watching it again with NF subs but that is very unappealing! Then again, I rely on them way less now than I did then, so it might not be the worst!)
Now we’re covering dramas weekly on the website, it’s getting hard to keep track of just how much stuff is going up. This week, I abandoned Record of Youth (sorry, show, but you were becoming a chore), but 18 Again is still absolutely killing me with its perfection. KILLING ME.
We’ve dropped two new podcast episodes (sorry, we’re behind but we’re catching up!), so don’t miss them! I particularly recommend the latest What’s Up in Dramaland? where Anisa and Paroma talk about female-led variety (which is incredibly lucid despite the heightened hilarity born of a too-late night and a too-early morning!)
I don’t know why I’m watching at this point. Although it’s objectively not a terrible drama (although it’s not great either), my subjective experience of watching this drama is roughly akin to what I felt while watching Was It Love?
Yeah, I sort of go through each episode feeling nothing. Sometimes I scoff or roll my eyes. Occasionally, I find a particular scene touching or cute. After I finish each episode, I wonder why Park Bo-gum chose this project. After both Encounter and this, I get the sense that PBG needs to choose dramas more carefully (put him in a group with Ji Chang-wook and Lee Joon-gi, IMO).
I\’m keeping a running tally of how many screencaps I can stuff into these, like an overflowing emotion sandwich. Such a glutton for these eps which bring squishy joy together with the crunch of regret, wrapped around the burger of all the things we wish we\’d done differently 😭
Thank you so much for this beautiful review. You articulated my exact thoughts as I was watching these episodes. The unfolding of Dae-young’s story, his unseen sacrifices for his family and realization he turned into a version of his father he never wanted to be, is so impeccably done. I am so glad him and his father had the chance to forgive each other. The basketball court scene left me a blubbering mess.
You picked up on all the little moments I loved in these episodes: the conversation between Da-jung and her mom, Dae-young and Ja-sung. UGH. This show is such a gem!!
I thought I was the only one who watched it this week! I did like the seemingly throw away scene with Grandpa and dad in the van when they went to the senior modeling center. It looks like they were taking the first steps to healing. Then the whole awkward situation at the center in front of the trainer. I didn’t get the conversation except to know that the son was back to disrespectful conversation in front of his dad in front of the trainer. Was it really translated, “now she will think our family is a hot mess!?” Something like that! I 😂 at that line!
I was disgruntled enough by then that I didn’t even pay as much attention XD But it most likely wasn’t literally ‘hot mess’, ha. I have reached the point where I resent having to write about the show, which makes watching it a chore – now there’s a feeling I didn’t think I’d have again in the post-recapper life 😂
I didn’t know it was because of COVID. I thought it was because of the KOCOWA approach the anime studios were taking, albeit it this was is YouTube and free.
that’s really interesting, thanks for the link! I haven’t kept up with anime much since I got into kdrama, but there were a couple of things I was staying up to date with. I think part of the fansubbers’ function is a lot like drama fansubbers – they provide something that isn’t otherwise available, or more quickly than something is officially licensed and translated. I’ve seen other groups shut down over the years (manga scanlation as well as anime fansubs) for legal reasons, but this seems somewhat different for *not* being that.
I wouldn’t be averse to the kocowa-style youtube channel if it had good content!
Record of Youth: Episodes 9-10 Review, in which:
– Hye-joon is KING OF THE WORLD
– Hyung is dethroned
– Hae-hyo stops being a paper cutout
& Hae-hyo\’s mom meets her match
Plus: I do my level best to stuff every single screencap ever into one review bc economy and restraint is for smart people.
and I am not smart people 😂
(*real reason is that FT weekday job means I tend not to catch up to the week in drama until the weekend. I tried harder this week, but it\’s probably not sustainable because apparently the older you get, the more your body hates you if you don\’t let it sleep 😭)
Bonus: look out for an 18 Again review (1-6) coming hopefully tomorrow and I\’m so excited about who I\’m doing it with! KEEP PEELETHED YOUR EYE BOLLS.
We\’ve finally sorta (haphazardly) committed to the show, so this week\’s should definitely be more timely. Though I\’ve already watched ep9 and dread the Angst Train coming in on Platform 10.
Thank you for this! I just finished and now have to revisit every beautiful and perfect moment. Going about my day now saying AAAAAAAAAAAAA and clasping my hands over my heart every five minutes as something else pops into my brain….
Please send me the link for your review. I need to squeal. I need to vent. I need to mourn. What a glorious finale, and yet, alas, it IS a finale… What am I to do with my life without Yeo-Jin & Shi-mok???
I am 3/4 way reading through the review and… cronyism… I have learned a new word today. thanks!
I love love love this review!!! (and the previous ones too)
And a rather belated podcast episode (finally!) of What’s up in Dramaland?, which I hope is still enjoyable (not only because of my fancy new mic which makes me sound like A PERSON!)
If you\’ve missed my recaps, imagine that if I\’d been working that show, this is sort of how it would look, minus the most laborious actual recap part 😂

Just popping in to invite you to an impromptu online tea party (it’s called Yak Tea!) Christmas day, especially if you are in need of some company and laughs. You can wear your jammies, but come armed with hot victuals!
We’ll play some silly games, and Anisa’s mom has really generously agreed to give us a special session of Ask Ammi, if you have any real-life need for counselling (questions can be submitted anonymously). RSVP here: https://dramasoverflowers.net/2020/12/20/join-us-in-the-year-end-yak-yak-tea/
Also, if you’d like to share what got you through 2020, we’d love to feature your audio clips on our showpiece episode of the year, the Year-End Yak. 1.

November 27, 2020 at 10:32 AM
1. Yes. Constantly. A show you love will remain good no matter how many times you see it, and you might see it differently every time.
2. Oh God, yes. Gokusen. Hana Kimi. Buzzer Beat. Thirty but Seventeen. Shining Inheritance. Age of Youth 2. I Hear Your Voice.

Yes!!
IHYV is also one of mine (I mean, I’ve rewatched it before – these days, there isn’t even much time for normal watching 😭)

Thank you for sharing!!
I did exactly the same with Healer. I think it’s my most rewatched show 3x while airing (raw, viki subs, DF subs…considered watching it again with NF subs but that is very unappealing! Then again, I rely on them way less now than I did then, so it might not be the worst!)

Dramas Over Flowers updates!
Now we’re covering dramas weekly on the website, it’s getting hard to keep track of just how much stuff is going up. This week, I abandoned Record of Youth (sorry, show, but you were becoming a chore), but 18 Again is still absolutely killing me with its perfection. KILLING ME.
Stuff we wrote:
– 18 Again: Episodes 9-10 Review with me, @Saner and Anisa (@laica).
– Anisa just wrote Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol: Episodes 1-4 Review.
– We are excited to welcome our first solo guest-post from @JustMe: Drama Addict Diary: More Than Friends, Episodes 1-4 Overview.
—
Stuff we recorded:
We’ve dropped two new podcast episodes (sorry, we’re behind but we’re catching up!), so don’t miss them! I particularly recommend the latest What’s Up in Dramaland? where Anisa and Paroma talk about female-led variety (which is incredibly lucid despite the heightened hilarity born of a too-late night and a too-early morning!)
There’s also a new Little Yak on The Tale of the Nine-tailed, which was born of an Instagram Live with our pal and Seoulbeats writer, Rimi (@greenfields)
Whew, okay, that’s everything, I think.
I don’t even know if you guys are interested in my random updates. Should I stop, or carry on?

I don’t know why I’m watching at this point. Although it’s objectively not a terrible drama (although it’s not great either), my subjective experience of watching this drama is roughly akin to what I felt while watching Was It Love?
Maq
October 24, 2020 at 9:43 PM
Okay, maybe not Was It Love? That’s extreme of me. But maybe TKEM?

TKEM at least had Woo Do Hwan. This one is more mindless viewing for me, and TKEM was a struggle.

I am loving 18 Again so, so much. Back this week with @Saner on a review of 7-8, here: 18 Again: Episodes 7-8 Review

Saya
October 17, 2020 at 3:42 PM
I was disgruntled enough by then that I didn’t even pay as much attention XD But it most likely wasn’t literally ‘hot mess’, ha. I have reached the point where I resent having to write about the show, which makes watching it a chore – now there’s a feeling I didn’t think I’d have again in the post-recapper life 😂

I didn’t know it was because of COVID. I thought it was because of the KOCOWA approach the anime studios were taking, albeit it this was is YouTube and free.

October 12, 2020 at 3:58 PM
that’s really interesting, thanks for the link!

HI WE ARE EARLY THIS WEEK
by which I mean we are not a week late* 😅
