Decided to watch a drama for the first time in a long time. So I picked up Police University and I can’t even finish the first episode.
Why is it so bad?!?
Cha Tae Hyun can act. He basically acts the same character every time but he can act… usually. So why is he terrible in Police University?!? I just can’t believe he’s a cop. I don’t think he believes he’s a cop. So how does he expect me to believe he’s a police officer?
And Jinyoung? I didn’t have an opinion on cause I’d never watched him in anything but I’d thought he was capable of pulling his weight. Well, he didn’t! He, too, is terrible in this. His face emotes weirdly. He’s stiff and I also don’t think he’s immersed in his character. Just terrible!
Krystal didn’t have much of an appearance in the first episode so I have no opinion.
The writing of the show is just as terrible but lazy writing isn’t a new thing. Law/medicine/tech dramas tend to be cringy due to the clear lack of research about the field. In fact, almost every profession is misrepresented on T.V. But the characters and human stories make up for the lack of technical depth. It was supposed to be like that but the actors are awkward! The writing is awkward, too. Everything is a mess! One of the worst things I’ve watched in a while especially because it’s a drama that’s taking itself seriously and expects me to do the same. Had it been comedy, it would have been less cringy. Or is it supposed to be comedy? But it isn’t funny, at all.
The police station scene where Jinyoung gets caught and Cha Tae Hyun is berating him, and Jinyoung’s adoptive father is on his knees – that whole scene is a cringefest. Couldn’t get through it.
Thank God for Gaus Electronics! Now this drama, I’m enjoying. I binged all episodes. I was too mad at Police University and had to come rant here.
Reading your post reminded me of Soundtrack #1. I loved Kang So-hee (is that her name? Forgot the actors’ names sometimes) so I thought this would be another good project. So looked forward to it. But I was beyond disappointed watching the first ep. The ML is also a well-known name, I think. But everything in it was so unbelievably bland I forgot how great of an actor the FL was in her previous roles. So I think it might be because of the production team who made it look like that for you if the actors were good in their previous projects.
I had fun for like 5 episodes then everything was stupid and obvious and I there was not enough material for 16 episodes (not even for 10). To start with does anyone believe Krystal is 18 for most part of the series? Please, one thing is a flashback, and other thing is… this mess.
I had almost forgotten I actually watched some episodes, although I don’t remember anything that happened.
I completely agree! Police University is a disaster. I watched three episodes and couldn’t get enough of more. Cha Tae Hyun is usually quite good, so I think in this case it’s the director. It is his job to tell the actor what to do. I once did research papers in college about the influence of directing on the quality of acting. Then I found https://edubirdie.com/pay-for-research-papers for this. And here everything is obvious – there is no directing! Here’s the result: good actors, but impossible to watch. The script is a separate pain. It feels like it was written on my knee. Everything looks so awkward and ridiculous that it’s simply impossible to watch

It is good that you stoppee because it got better in second episode only to derail in the second half.

I didn’t really like this drama. They always chose to focus on a big mystery instead on the characters becoming police officers….
