Unmasked on camera with Kim Hye-soo

It’s time for an exposé with the relentless reporters of Disney+’s crime-comedy Unmasked, presented through a sleek poster and a dryly hilarious teaser. Centering around the investigative program “Trigger” that unmasks bad guys all across the nation, this tale certainly doesn’t hesitate to throw its heroes — and us — right into the action.

“I almost died before I even reached the office today,” laments Jung Sung-il (The Glory), who plays Han Do, the newest addition to the team. Considering he braved his way through a paragliding jump, a breakneck chase, and a strangulation attempt, it’s no wonder he’s at his limit. His colleague’s response: “Seems like you met PD Oh.”

Said PD is Oh So-ryong, the leader of the Trigger team and a tenacious go-getter whose reputation precedes her. Played by the ever-charismatic Kim Hye-soo (Under the Queen’s Umbrella), So-ryong’s fiesty spirit and investigative drive simply can’t be quenched, not even when she’s in the unforgiving clutches of a rifle-wielding cult. “A team leader who lives only for today,” reads the chyron, and a voiceover points out that “backing out” simply isn’t in So-ryong’s dictionary.

“We don’t do pre-emptions,” declares So-ryong’s boss, and by the look on her face, she’s very much in agreement. That is, until the long-suffering rookie Do is brought on board, pushing her buttons with his brusque rudeness. “What happened to the flower I gave you?” asks So-ryong. Cut to Do tossing it out a taxi window. Do: “I lost it.” LOL, his neck brace gives him the perfect excuse not to look her in the eye, doesn’t it.

Backing So-ryong up is her assistant director Kang Gi-ho, played by Joo Jong-hyuk (Frankly Speaking). Alas, his fervent passion unfortunately doesn’t quite translate to reality, since he’s a little clumsy (though endearingly so). Bristling at Do like a puppy that’s all bark and no bite, Gi-ho issues So-ryong an ultimatum — “Choose now, is it me or that fox?” HAHAHA.

Petty bickering aside, Trigger is synonymous with the number one broadcast that viewers trust, and So-ryong is far from your typical reporter. “Even if you do this all day, does the law change? Does the world change?” sneers an unrepentant criminal. “It does,” answers So-ryong. “Because people’s hearts are what an investigative reporter changes.” To that end, she’ll willingly throw herself into danger time and time again — whether that’s a crumbling building, or a fiery explosion.

“This isn’t child’s play,” So-ryong warns, fearlessly staring down the barrel of a gun (much to an aghast Do’s horror). If the headline in the Trigger newsroom is anything to go by — an elderly person who burns cats’ corpses, oof — the cases they expose aren’t for the faint of heart, and So-ryong will make sure their true colors are laid bare on air.

Helmed by PD Yoo Seon-dong (The Uncanny Counter 2), with scripts by Kim Ki-ryang, Unmasked is slated for a January 15 premiere.

I was just thinking that it’s been a while since my last procedural drama, and this might be just the thing! Now we just have to hope Hulu actually has it available everywhere.

I'm excited! Is this the year of the clashing teamwork and humor? I just read the article about Oh My Ghost Clients. At least the hair here looks better. Joo Jong Hyuk could fit in with the other team though, haha.
