Premiere Watch: Face Me

Time slot: Wednesday-Thursday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Medical, crime, mystery
Episode count: 12
Global streamer: Viki/Viu

Reasons to watch: In Face Me, the wonderful Lee Min-ki takes on a K-drama archetype we all know and love (?): the cold-hearted doctor whose empathy is as low as his surgical skills are high. Here’s hoping Lee Min-ki puts a fresh touch on this, because the premise isn’t exactly interesting: his character teams up with a detective as he lends his plastic surgeon insights to help solve cases.

While this’ll likely be a bit episodic in nature, K-dramas are usually deft at adding overarching storylines that make a cohesive drama. It’s also exciting to see Han Ji-hyun here as the female lead — oh, and the double dose of Lee Yi-kyung (who’s also starring in Marry YOU, premiering in the middle of the month) is always welcome.

TL;DR: Lee Min-ki is a cold-hearted genius surgeon who helps solve crimes. Probably has a childhood trauma tucked away in there too.

That character archetype is about as old and tired as it gets, but the cast and genres do make for a pretty compelling argument. Who knows, maybe this'll be an entertaining surprise, or at the very least an entertaining trainwreck. I'm giving it a chance.

Irises and what they symbolize make me hopeful. How and when they were painted gives me dread.

I will never understand why the showrunners choose Lee Min Ki for the role of cold-hearted genius. He is barely decent in those roles, always stiff and with two expression in total. Meanwhile, he absolutely shines playing any type of weirdo (E.g: Shut Up: Flower Boy Band, My Liberation Notes).

I'm really excited to see Lee Min-ki again so soon on my screen. He's one of my most favorite actors (he had me at Dalja's Spring) and I can handle most medical dramas so bring it on!

Re. Channel A’s MARRY YOU. I have no information yet on a legal stream for the US. I am cautiously optimistic that MARRY YOU will be available on Viki US because Viki US has licensed many Channel A dramas in the past.
