News bites: October 8, 2024

Lee Je-hoon, Pyo Ye-jin, Kim Eui-sung

  • Greasing the wheels for SBS’s Taxi Driver to return to our screens with Season 3, our vigilante hero Lee Je-hoon (Chief Detective 1958) has reportedly signed on, while Pyo Ye-jin (Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale) and Kim Eui-sung (Black Knight) are reviewing their offers favorably. Production for the crime-action’s new season is currently in the planning stages. [Osen, Sports Seoul]

  • As preparations continue for The Queen Who Crowns (previously Won-kyung), the sageuk has reportedly made plans to air a TV-friendly version on tvN, while simultaneously streaming a different edit (potentially rated age 19+) on TVING. Two bonus prequel episodes will be exclusive to TVING as well, but we’ll have to wait and see how this applies to international audiences. [iZE, Newsen]
  • In the meantime, Channel A’s upcoming Marry YOU introduces the cast in new character posters, with curly locks Lee Yi-kyung (Marry My Husband) headlining the comedy romance. Also starring Jo Soo-min (Penthouse 2), iKON’s Ju-ne (a.k.a. Gu Jun-hoe) (Twinkling Watermelon), and Ji Yi-soo (Sponsor), the matchmaking shenanigans are set to begin in November. [Sports Donga]

  • A new teaser follows Nam Yoon-soo (Dog Knows Everything) in his journey through Love in the Big City, with scripts notably written by the original novelist Park Sang-young. Releasing all 8 episodes on TVING come October 21, the romance story is split between four filmmakers: Heo Jun-ho (A Normal Family), Hong Ji-young (New Year Blues), Sohn Tae-kyum (Baby Beside Me), and Kim Se-in (The Apartment with Two Women). [JTBC]
  • It’s been many, many moons since KBS’s Winter Sonata first took dramaland by storm and is said to be (still?) the number one K-drama in Japan. As such, in celebration of the melodrama’s 20th anniversary since its first screening in Japan – and the everlasting power of “Yonsama” Bae Yong-joon (Dream High) and “Ji-woo Hime” Choi Ji-woo (Shooting Stars) – production company Pan Entertainment is planning a re-mastered movie cut for 2025, together with the original PD Yoon Seok-ho (Love Rain). [Sports Donga]
  • A package of stills have dropped for Netflix’s occult-thriller Hellbound 2, giving us a glimpse into the turmoil surrounding our second season leads: Kim Hyun-joo (The Bequeathed), Kim Sung-chul (No Way Out – The Roulette), and Kim Shin-rok (Sweet Home 3), as well as Im Sung-jae (The Worst of Evil), Moon Sori (Race), and Moon Geun-young (Catch the Ghost). The horror unfolds later this month on October 25. [Dispatch]

I find it confusing that there will be two versions of The Queen Who Crowns. Not sure what I prefer though.

I also hope to see the remastered movie of Winter Sonata.

Totally agree. I was just thinking it will be really confusing to have 2 different versions. Let alone the TVING additional 2 episodes.

Reminds me of the censored & non-censored versions in Spice Up Our Love.
Another way to say it would be the China-friendly and USA-friendly versions.

I wonder what we will get. But I would be interested on what is different though. Hopefully whatever it will be will not take away too much from the story.

Number 5 Is this a remake or a touch-up for the original version?

It is a remastered version edited to movie length.

Ooh!! lots to process.

First - can you see me jumping up and down for the uri OG BAE ... Bae Yong-joon!! 🙌🏻 Although tbh I don't know how I feel about a version edited to movie length. 😅 At least it will give a chance to the newer audiences to have a sampler and who knows perhaps they may want to check out the entire buffet drama. 😂👌🏻

Taxi Driver 3 - now that multi-season K-dramas the next big thing - yay but also hope all the OG cast returns and the story/ies are good.🤞🏻

The Crowned Queen has me all dizzy.  😵‍💫 Not sure how I feel. It will be good enough to watch just *one* version but which one!? Therein lies the rub. So wait and watch policy in place. Kind souls on the internet will have had a detailed comparison laid out in time for a binge. 🙏🏻😅

Jun-hoe can bring out that mad energy to match Lee Yi-kyung. Hopefully Jun would have also had a chance to learn from his sunbae-nim on set.

I hope the movie length version of Winter Sonata is available internationally! That is exactly how I would use it - as a taste and to gauge if I would have the stamina to last through an old school melo.

I’m glad that Taxi Driver is at least a kind of procedural - those work the best for multiple seasons I think. But I hope they stop making them before the quality starts to decline…

Had Taxi Driver 2 ended with romance between Kim Dogi and Ahn Goeun, I would have been happy and wouldn't need a third season, to be honest.

Taking a leaf from their American counterparts they know a drama has OTP sizzle till they are at a - will they, won’t they - stage. Once they get together … one can safely say bye bye to the series. 😂

I think everyone would want to check out the movie at least. So even it is delayed I’m sure it will definitely be released internationally.🤞🏻Depending on the reception maybe they will also consider releasing a remastered version of the drama. 🤷‍♀️ Cannot wait to see the reactions of first time watchers. 😍

Taxi Driver 2 obviously did better, riding on the coat tails of season 1. Maintaining the quality is the real challenge. I guess till they can milk it we may keep getting seasons. 😅

1. Bring on more Taxi Driver! Hopefully the full cast returns. Also hoping for Esom to at least make a cameo or something.

2. Yeah, I'm not a fan of these "tv-friendly versions". I think if you film something with the intention of showing it, then that's how it should be shown and judged, no toning stuff down just because some guy in a suit wanted the show to be more accessible. Hopefully us international audiences get the streaming edit, unlike No Gain No Love where we were mostly stuck with the tv version.

CJ ENM is promoting the heck out of TVING with mostly failed shows. If they throw money at it like QUEEN WOO, then make it worth it. I don't have high hopes for this next sageuk either.

No. 2. TVING/tvN THE QUEEN WHO CROWNS. Based on the above information about a tvN ‘regular’ version and a TVING ‘raunchy’ version being made available, this will be a pass. By the beginning of the new year I probably will be ready for a ‘serious’ sageuk but this won’t be it.
No. 3. Channel A’s MARRY YOU. I will be there. Still a month to go before episode one airs but I remain cautiously optimistic that Viki will license MARRY YOU. Viki has licensed many Channel A dramas in the past.

2. I'm not a fan of the title change from Won-kyung to The Queen Who Crowns. It screams Won-kyung taking a backseat for the crowned as the story progresses.

I prefer "Won-kyung" too.

I don't want to watch the sanitized version of The Queen Who Crowns, so I hope the 19+ is available.

I loved Hellbound Season 1, and while I'm sad about Yoo Ah-in, I love Kim Sung-cheol, so I'm just as excited for Season 2. Since the characters can come back to life, can Park Jeong-min please come back too?

QUEEN(S) WOOHOO, let's see if they both end up as QUEEN(S) WHOOPS.

1) The second season was less interesting than the first one... I wonder if a third one is a good idea.

2) I'm surprised by the choice of the actress, I picture her more in modern drama than sageuk. But we didn't have a lot of sageuk in 2024, so I'm curious!

4) I hope it will be great, we don't have mainstream Kdrama about homosexuality.

Sounds like some good ones are coming up. Always here for a Lee Je-hoon show. Marry Me could be a hit or miss depending on the humor and if the permed hair will transform into something else. Might have to try the Winter Sonata movie due to nostalgia warm fuzzies.
