Kim Tae-ri shines as Jeongnyeon – The Star is Born

With opening night now one week away for tvN’s Jeongnyeon – The Star is Born, the final stretch of promos includes a new teaser, where we follow our underdog heroine Kim Tae-ri (Revenant) as she takes her first steps onto center stage.

The teaser begins with gukgeuk (a type of traditional Korean musical theater) stars Jung Eun-chae (Your Honor) and Kim Yoon-hye (Goodbye Earth) discovering our country girl Yoon Jeong-nyeon (Kim Tae-ri) singing in the streets. Impressed by Jeong-nyeon’s voice, Moon Ok-kyung (Jung Eun-chae) introduces her to the wondrous world of performing arts and, suffice to say, our young heroine is entranced.

Mom Moon Sori (Race) is strongly opposed, understanding the challenges that await her daughter if she continues down this path – not to mention how hard it must be for a woman to make her own way in a war-torn South Korea during the 1950s. Still, Jeong-nyeon is determined to pursue her new dream and Ok-kyung takes her under her wing in their women’s performing troupe.

Despite being naturally gifted, Jeong-nyeon does feel humbled by the other trainees who have long been practicing and honing their craft. She even awkwardly compares herself to a frog croaking next to her rival Shin Ye-eun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse). But that doesn’t mean she’s intimidated by Heo Young-seo’s (Shin Ye-eun) snooty jabs and our Jeong-nyeon confidently stands her ground.

It’s an uphill battle for Jeong-nyeon on all sides if she wants to catch up with her fellow trainees and troupe leader Ra Mi-ran (Cold Blooded Intern) takes a tough love approach, telling Jeong-nyeon that she needs to prove herself on her own. Thankfully, our spirited heroine isn’t discouraged and the teaser closes on her resolve to show the naysayers what she can accomplish.

Production for tvN’s Jeongnyeon – The Star is Born has PD Jung Ji-in (The Red Sleeve Cuff) directing with scripts by Choi Hyo-bi (A Time Called You). Airing in the weekend slot following Love Next Door, the period drama and webtoon adaptation premieres next week on October 12.

I feel so conflicted about this one. After watching an interview where KTR explains the author based Jeongnyeon on her character from Ahgassi (one of my favorite films ever), I feel like I have to watch it. I can imagine now why the author made the choices she made.
And I can't believe KTR has been training since 2021 for this.

Yes. She went straight up to training even before the rest of the roles were cast.

Kim Tae-ri is a delight to watch so I'm gonna try this and hope its good. Period dramas are not my favorite so I hope it hooks me in.

Even if the time period doesn't, Kim Tae-ri is sure to reel you in. 🤣🤣🤣

Kim Tae Ri is brave. I remember watching an interview of her where she described herself as tone deaf when singing the OST for 25-21 “With”. Now she takes on a singing role. That’s courage!
Fighting Tae-Ri!!!

I’m also worried about where this show will stream in the USA. It’s nowhere to be found in the Hulu October lineup.

I will watch this for Kim Tae-Ri and the female cast.

I have questions about that questionable hairstyle the put on her though.

And the mention of trainees makes me think of the modern-day K-Pop agencies and their horrific trainee system for churning out boy band/girl group after boy band/girl group.
