I had a busy Saturday and was then glad that ep.3 was waiting for me when I went to bed. I'm still tremendously enjoying this drama, it understands that a family weekender needs to follow ALL of the various story lines... and it manages to inject its special humour even in not so humorous situations (oh, Chaebol, you and your awareness of your pathetic conversation. 😄 Kim Junghyun is excellent here! 🙂).
We are still settling up the stage, but I have no urge to speed up through it, if anything, I can't wait for the next episode to know MORE and be more with the characters, all of them.

I'm confused about the DB protocol for this drama. Is it a hangout every week? Every 10 episodes??

I've been burned twice (Hyo Sim and The Real Has Come) by weekenders but Iron Family "appears" to be an outlier. Anyway, I'll keep checking back before I decide whether or not to invest my Sat/Sun time now that Love Next Door is ending.

😊

This is the fourth experiment that DB has done when it comes to weekenders. It appears that this time we will get a hangout for each weekend.

I think that it will have to stay really good to tempt them. So far, this show has avoided the obvious stumbles that would prevent that from happening.

Seven minutes into the third ep, why do they release so late, and if they want me to root for this ML he is going to have to do some sincere groveling. That was horrible, I don't care about the why, it was so hurtful.

After finishing the ep I am leaning toward her dry cleaning Oppa. I know he seems meant for the sister, but right now ibwouldnt mind if they mixed that up. Hopefully I'll end up liking the ML as much as I did in the scenes from the past.

I love that I like all of the parents and grandparents. I really hope that the Oron Family's mom ends up happy and able to have hope again by the end.

If our FL were to end up with dry cleaning Oppa the fact that her eyesight was restored because of money originally stolen from out ML's mom would not cause much of a relationship problem.

Said Oppa's emergency run to the design company to 'rescue' her Unni tells you something- as does his denial that Unni can ever have him- but this is in response to the fact that she is standing in front of him half undressed. The fact that she is effectively displaying her chest to him in that scene tells us where she stands as well. The two of them are already under each other's skin even if our laundry Oppa thinks he is in love with our FL: That is just a fantasy. Unni is his reality just as he is hers even as they both claim otherwise.

Why are they denying these things? Their traumas: He is an orphan, and she has grown up poor. Yet their actions tell us what the real score is and, of course, set us up for their journey, which is classic weekender stuff.

The preview for next week said it all. What stops Unni to go further (or openly) with the dry cleaning oppa is “you are poor”. They are the destined couple without doubt but it’s a ‘what journey’ story ahead.

Oh, he seems to be always flustered in her company... and has no mouth-checker. 😆
Dry Cleaning Oppa is currently definitely winning.
(Though Chaebol's gestures do speak differently than his mouth 😁 and I believe that he actually DOES care, and maybe even more than he thinks. 🙂)

He has his good moments and is definitely socially awkward.
I think it was so hard to watch h because we don't often get heroine's who let themselves be so honest and vulnerable in their wants and brave enough to go after them. Plus, she tried to set up no expectations between them.
But I do think this actor is strong enough to give this ML a nice arc.

I think that we do not yet see that he is really insecure because he is not really a Chaebol at all: he is a step-chaebol. His stepfather married his mom fifteen years ago and that is how he acquired a status that he did not previously have. He is doing his best to prove himself because his stepfather could make him the heir as stepdad is childless- but this just adds to his anxiety.

I do have to say , I do like the relationship with the step father. I'd like to see them be more comfortable with each other, but it feels rare to see the chaebol step parent being a caring parent. I hope they explore that relationship more.

1

So we have had our burglary and tomorrow, with episode 4, we should be completing our setup.

Among the relationships we saw was our FL's "Oppa" who works in her family laundry being summoned late night by her (actual real) Unni to handle a 'stain emergency' on the sample that she has created during her off hours. Unni is apparently quite comfortable standing in front of our (apparent) 2ML in her camisole. He assures her that Unni cannot have him. There is obviously something going on between the two of them- and a story line to come.

Missing from episode three was our FL's actual Oppa and his bride- but now that we have heard the sirens, I trust that they will appear tomorrow.

Our grandparents have made their way to the mountain- lets see what happens tomorrow.

I loved Stocks and Building Owner Oppa in his Special Hero rescue mode, packing his special stuff and so. 🙂

Btw, it seems instead of a thriller end of the chaebol parents relationship we will get the ordinary divorce. What on one hand is a pity as it seems the genuinely like each other (but the money trust issue), on the other hand it opens way to the story line of Chaebol Dad and Mom. Just it will be interesting to see the evolution of the relationship of Mom and Chaebol Mom, they seemed to hit it well together in the car.

Tbh what I want for mom is money. LOL so she can do whatever she wants, and feel more confident and free.
I don't even know if she ever got the time to feel lonely or think in what she wants for herself.
Even if a love interest appears, she doesn't have the energy/time to deal with him, imo. She's too worried about her family (money). So I just want her to be free of that first.

I think I wouldn't care if she ends up alone as long as de finds herself again. It would be nice if she gets to do what she study (I'm assuming that's her dream). It was literature, right?

But if a cute ahjussi is added to the mix and she ends up getting all the love she deserves, I'm not complaining either.
I think there's the possibility of that after things get more stable with the family (maybe after uri Da Rim's surgery). But there's too much going on for now.

2

Money would be certainly good, @enriquequierecagar , but I also want someone who would shower Mom with love and care. ❤️

1

Unlike the manipulative, whining and predatory moms of the previous two weekenders this mom is actually a hero, but not a Candy because she is strong. She deserves a very happy outcome.

1

I thought the mom is the actual FL of this drama as so far she has the most scenes in these four episodes than any characters. I just felt her exhaustion in having to care for everyone and the shop. The camera lingered on how she thoughtfully chose the purple cardigan for her mother-in-law and her setting up the beddings immediately after the in-laws returned home - all made me on the verge of tears. (And I myself would never be able to do such things and be so attentive to each and everyone in the family.)

It’ll be heartbreaking to see her go to a loanshark. Just wish her all the happiness in the end.

Now that Love Next Door is over, I can settle into Park Ji-young as the self-sacrificing mom here in Iron Family (and not the dragon lady in LND), haha.

EPISODE 3
1. Haraboji and halmoni are THE CUTEST. I love them so much.
2. I don't know what's happening with Cha Rim and (secretly rich) oppa, but I'm already invested in their story.
3. Is mom going to make me cry in every single episode?
4. I find the ML's parents adorable.
5. I can't wait for tomorrow.

Episode 4 was a delight again. We had perhaps less of other story lines, but we quite advanced with the money theft and now my question is whether Halmoni and Haraboji secretly stashed something in their backpacks (they didn’t, but I wish they did). They were adorable giggling in the bed after their adventurous trip. 😊

Mom is trying to gather money for the treatment... and it shows how burdening it can be for the siblings.
And this again shows a good writing - the possible conflicts we see coming are (1) integral to the story (2) internal to the characters, coming from their situation and as a consequence of their doing. Like being pushed to give up on an apartment (and independence) for a sick sister... being tempted to use money from the in-laws... or keeping hidden money from the husband and lying.
(This is something Hyoshim wasted so terribly, it was there, we could see it, but instead the show had us frustratingly watching Mom moping on the sofa and Hyoshim cooking curry 🙄.) Anyway, so far, knock, knock, the story unfolds well and I hope also the humour stays good till the end. 🤞

Truly Hyoshim wasted time on those things and missed some truly golden opportunities.

Yes, we are being set up with some significant conflicts- like the coming need to hide where the money came from our FL's police officer Oppa and sister in law.

Required fields are marked *

Hyoshim also missed out on having two love lines with the Tae brothers. They could have made Taemin and his wife a true couple instead of inserting him in a love triangle with Hyo-shim.
Hopefully, Iron Family doesn't do the same with Secretly Rich oppa and Da-rim.

True, police officer oppa doesn't look like he'll let go of that theft case anytime soon. We can expect him to probe until he sniffs out something.

Required fields are marked *

If there was a true K-drama felony- one of the greatest of all time- it was in setting up Taemin and his wife to be one of the greatest enemies to lovers stories ever- and then throwing it away.

"Secretly Rich Oppa" already has an unconscious thing for our FL's Unni- and she for him. But neither of them would admit it or even think about it at this stage of the drama. Given that our writer has specialized in good romcoms until now it would be inconceivable for her to mess this up. "Secretly rich Oppa" is fixated for the moment on our FL because he does not think that he is worthy of Unni.

2

Oh, what could have been!
Smexy Taemin in suit with his fierce Reporter Wifey.

Grandpa and grandma’s giggling in the bed is my favorite scene in Ep 4. I wish they had pinched some of those shining notes too!

I liked episode 3. As before, I enjoy the way the story is free of annoying, screeching characters, and that the plot moves quickly from point to point without too many secrets or misunderstandings. I also like that the ML is not already in love with the FL (although he clearly feels more of a pull towards her than I think he lets himself admit), and that he is absolutely not perfect. And yet, he's very endearing. His inner monologue is hilarious, too.

I keep wondering if there isn't some kind of medical fund that Mom could apply for on behalf of her daughter. I also wanted the doctor to contradict Mom when she was blaming herself for the fact that her daughter can't have the operation. It's not her fault medical costs are out of control!

I hope when I'm 90 that I have the energy to dig for bracken in the mountains.

Honestly, that astronomical price for that miraculous injection (and no possibility to get at least partial funding somewhere) is where I have to use my suspension of disbelief the most.

2
7
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes, suspension of disbelief indeed. Even if this is in the very early stages for this medication that did seem high. If it is in the early stages, then the funds are coming from the companies R&D budget and not the patient. But the doctor is armed with a full color printed brochure so that is not the case.

So here is my hypothesis: This treatment is being manufactured in near Earth orbit space. Thanks to Elon Musk the costs of launching into near Earth orbit have orbit have been cut by 98% and there is now a very small amount of manufacturing happening there as a result- including pharmaceuticals- for which the absence of gravity makes a huge difference. But even though this is now possible there is still a real cost- and add that to the fact that 'designer medications' for relatively rare medical conditions by the very nature of the situation are very low production volume and therefore higher unit cost and you could see a very high cost product. But that such treatment would be completely uncovered does seem excessive. "Life-threatening" is not the only criteria and blindness carries a significant cost to not just the individual but to society as well.

One beanie checked that medicine out and reported the US price is in par with what’s described in the drama. Can’t remember in which thread this finding was reported.

I have issue with that doctor too - all factual but not helpful.

1
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I am wondering if I am right about the manufacturing process. Please note that only the part of the process that needs zero gravity would happen in space.

But it is certainly also true that in any case such very specialized medications for relatively uncommon diseases have to cost much more per dose in any case.

And yes, the doctor is being intentionally dismissive of the cost. Surely the doctor should have asked the hospital's social worker to check into funding. I get the distinct impression that the doctor did not bother.

I am going to hypothesize that the doctor is simply engaged in CYA: I advised my patient that there was a treatment, and my patient ignored my recommendation, so I am not liable for malpractice.

0

At this point, I'm trying to guess what would be the most morally satisfactory source of funds for the 'miracle cure'. Assuming it is someone's largesse, would ML fund it or SBO Oppa, or will FL mom come into an inheritance miraculously? Or will ML mom receive a tax (and prosecution) waiver if she 'gifts' some of the money away for a good cause? So many possibilities!

I'm not even thinking about grandparents and the loot as yet. Or the *Rim siblings trying to be resourceful - and nice - and do something for their sister.

Also, is the ML’s maternal grandfather a loanshark or something with that much cash to pass onto the ML’s mom?

3

reply

Required fields are marked *

I believe that he was indeed a loan shark. But that is the part which gets me: He is absolutely as aware of the time value of money as anyone else and more so than most. His demand that his daughter sit on the money was a selfish emotional one. Had he been thinking rationally he would have simply had her pay the inheritance tax and made sure that his son-in-law was in charge of the rest of it.

2

1. I LOVE HARABOJI AND HALMONI.
2. Yes, mom decided she's going to make me cry every single episode.
3. I thought we had avoid the love triangle/square, but nope.
4. I'm already invested in mom x Cha Rim's (and maybe Cha Rim x Da Rim?) healing story. I smell the older daughter trauma/resentment storyline from here.
5. I love the ML's family even if mom's greed is a problem. But I also feel like her lawyer didn't do his job?? Why didn't he tell her how bad it could get for her and her family?
6. Why are all the characters so charming/likeable/relatable/fun?

Wow, what a great opening two weeks! I haven't consistently enjoyed a show and ALL its characters THIS much in a while. It wasn't boring or distracting for a second. The writing feels very confident, like an old hand showing you how it should be done. Let's hope it stays this way.

Of course, KJH is such a natural comedian, he's a joy to watch. And GSR was charming in whatever I've watched her in before, she's got micro expressions that are absolutely killing - like that sly smile she gave for half a second after ML was dragged in by SBOO (Stocks and Building Owner Oppa - yeah I'm borrowing that too @dorotka :D ) - I rewatched that moment a few times!

I have been excited about this drama for months, and I'm so happy it's had a great opening. Besides the FL and ML actually finding their OTP, everyone else has equally compelling stories to tell: the moms, the kids, the grandparents, their daughter, the cop mom-in-law-to-be, the ML and family, even the bumbling thieves... I'm deeply invested already in everyone's storylines. Fingers crossed for a fun ride ahead!

"I haven't consistently enjoyed a show and ALL its characters THIS much in a while." Yes!!!!

Something that I completely adored this week was mom's scenes with her future in law and her current in law.

It was wonderful to just watch to grown women talk to each other like normal people for once. There was no "I secretly hate this woman because "rich"/"poor"", and there was no "my son/daughter is better than yours" either. We didn't have any passive-aggressive exchange, and we didn't have any mean comment being thrown the second one of them turn their back. They all seem like decent people (I already can picture the future in laws as future besties too).

Even when aunt's cheating husband appeared I had no problem with it because I know aunt will end up with Bom's dad, who seems like a lovely person.

I was also surprised at how excited Cha Rim seemed of having her mom visit her at work, and felt bad watching the disappoinment on her face when mom didn't even bother to properly say hi to her. I thought her character would annoy me, but no. Her story just gained my interest (the flirting scene with SBOO helped a bit, NGL).

“I was also surprised at how excited Cha Rim seemed of having her mom visit her at work, and felt bad watching the disappoinment on her face when mom didn't even bother to properly say hi to her.”

This is good writing 101. That scene hit me too and I’m left with the comfort that the writer - my beloved SSH - does care about the characters she creates. No one is totally bad or misbehave for no reason.

Exactly.
I'm wondering how many times mom has told her to give up on something or how little attention she has paid her.
Because Cha Rim seemed very happy to have her mom there and very angry at her request.

Even at work people are taking her things, so no wonder girl has anger issues...

3

Required fields are marked *

That scene really got to me too. Cha-rim is selfish and conceited because she needed to be to survive emotionally. She is constantly fighting to even keep what she has, and her mother seems to want to take that away- not for selfish reasons to be sure and out of desperation but even so Cha-rim has reason to feel shortchanged by all of this and that explains her callous attitude towards her sister. She refuses to be like Hyo-shim from LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE and no one is going to force her to change either. If she comes across as mean that is simply how she feels that she has to be: It is a defensive stance reflecting the trauma of her childhood. She is motivated by fear.

But all of this also means that she is redeemable and can change given a persuasive reason to do so. It might just begin with her lust for our 2ML.

1

I like how the story is going - it's quite different from the previous weekenders that I have seen. The mother's worries are very realistic and her actions to find the solution is what other mothers would do.

Kim Hye-eun and Park Ji-young are so cute. Too very different characters, and I can see Ji-yeon annoying a lot of people, but flighty, shameless rich women really are so fun to me. I hope we see Ji-yeon and Bong-hee interact more.

Funnily enough, this drama doesn't seem all that concerned with our lead couple yet, which im okay with. ML is clearly a bone head, and I'd rather he learn a little before getting with our FL (I'm not having another Fork-gyu situation). There's a lot of interesting possibilities here - looking forward to Aunt and Bom's dad, Bong-hee's relationship with her eldest daughter, even the ML's dad and his wife are cute (and so funny loll). So far, so good!

Maybe part of the problem with the past several weekenders was that far too much attention was paid to the 'central couple' in the beginning which setup a dramatic momentum from which they all never really recovered- and which required even recycling/repeating plot elements in order to continue.

This writer seems to have grasped the idea that a weekender is really an ensemble show where the central couple is simply the common thread which ties the multiple stories together. As a result, we are getting a lot more exposure in these episodes to the other characters.

2
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Now that you mention it, that's actually really true. Father is Strange & Once Again worked really well because they were very strong ensemble pieces, and you got a sense of the "family". The recent weekenders I followed were very romance heavy, and put so little effort in the ensemble that there was nothing to catch the story when the main couple story started to flop.

A mother desperate to help her daughter instead of exploit her is such a welcome change from recent weekenders. It’s also lovely to see real affection between family members and neighbors. Of course there’s going to be drama, but already the characters feel like people who could be deserving of whatever happiness they’ve earned by the end.

After four episodes the setup of this show is complete. Our heroic mom is desperately raising cash to save her daughter’s eyes while Grandma and Grandpa have come across the stolen loot. FL’s beautiful aunt is being dumped by her husband for a younger woman (Unfortunately, it appears that Central Casting in Kdramaland seems to have an inexhaustible supply of these jerks.

We have finally met the bad guys- the loan sharks and the thieves. Our ML’s mom should definitely not have listened to her dad fifteen years ago. Even if the ten billion won was cut in half by inheritance taxes after fifteen years and in her husband’s capable hands it would be worth more than ten billion now even if taxes had been paid on the gains along the way. He is hoping that her husband can find a way to forgive her. And, as I expected, we got to see more of her Oppa, her sister-in-law and her Oppa’s mother-in-law as well.

Is it OK if I really dislike her Unni right now? She is not evil but definitely selfish (and obviously scarred to the point of irrationality by the grind of the poverty she experienced). She is going to have to change a lot if she is going to be worthy of our 2ML.

Observation: This is shaping up to be a good weekender- yes there is suspense and crime- and there are some dislikeable people as well but the likeable and reformable ones way outnumber them.

Second observation: Not all weekender stories are romances- the birth of strong friendships are significant stories also.

That being said we do have some love lines being laid out in addition to the story of our FL and ML:

I actually went back to look at that scene at the design company where our (secretly rich) Stocks and Building Owner Oppa has made his emergency call in episode three and watching it a second time I saw even more than before: The way that Unni embraces our 2ML after he removes the stain, even putting her head on his shoulder, then takes of her blouse (she is down to her camisole) and then shows 2ML the lines by taking his hands and running them down her flanks in what has to be an unusually suggestive, if not actually erotic, gesture for a Kdrama and follows this up with a kiss to his cheek: If pressed she would, I am sure, claim that she was just showing her appreciation but our 2ML gets the real message and responds to all this by reminding her that she cannot have him. I am hoping that Unni will finally get over her selfishness, find her heart- and get her guy- but only after some serious redemption. His protestations notwithstanding the very fact that he is even there for her tells us what we need to know about his feelings- because he is literally there for her.

I was thinking the same thing about ML mom's financial planning - post-tax, inflation adjusted returns would have helped her recover her inheritance and more after 15 years. She is not the brightest money manager out there....

While you say the loan sharks and the thieves really outright bad guys, they came across more as comic relief than anything else right now. Pretty dumb and not really malicious. Just out to make a quick buck.

Actually, there is no one in the show I really dislike right now - even Unni. She has her reasons, perhaps. The family may have spent a greater amount of time and energy looking after FL and she may not have got her due attention.

I'm also curious to know SBO Oppa's backstory - how did he 'find' this family, and what made him stick, and why has he not told anyone about his estate yet.

The previous weekender gave us truly evil people in the form of the FL's twisted mother, the equally twisted 2ML and even the 2ML's baby daddy.

In this show we have bad guys who are just bad enough but, as you said, are really just greedy. They can still be dangerous, but it will be desperation and not malice that drives them.

As for our Stocks and Building Owner Oppa- he thinks he is sticking around for our FL but really, he is there for her Unni which is the real reason he wants her to move back home. He cannot admit even to himself that he is powerfully attracted to her even as he genuinely dislikes her selfishness. When he says that she cannot have him he means it- and remember that this is in response to her obvious attraction to him. They are being pulled together by a powerful attraction but both of them, at this point, would say that they are wrong for each other and, until Unni changes, they are both right.

I hope we get more of his backstory too- how did he come to be with them?

These four episodes are certainly delightful and have turned me into a fan. It’s equally delightful to read all the beanies’ comments - the family around Iron Family!

I know I'm late but is the translation for the surgery amout right?? 800 mil won to save Da Rim's sight and the doctor is asking if they can come up with the money in a short window of time? Other than the ML mom and Tae Woong who has 800 mil laying around?
