Two dads and three siblings in Family By Choice
by solstices
Bringing with it the warmth of a home-cooked meal, JTBC’s upcoming drama Family By Choice has released its second teaser. An adaptation of the Chinese drama Go Ahead, the tale promises a heartwarming journey of youth, healing, and growing up.
A voiceover narration introduces us to our unconventional family unit. The doting dad Yoon Jung-jae — played by Choi Won-young (Hierarchy) — cooks for his beloved children, all of whom have different surnames. Bae Hyun-sung (Miraculous Brothers) plays the energetic Kang Hae-joon, who cheerfully bangs a stick (labelled “Come down,” ha) on the ceiling to call his siblings to the dining table.
With just five minutes left before they need to leave for school, Jung-jae affectionately feeds his children. Next to Hae-joon is the stoic Kim San-ha, played by Hwang In-yub (Why Her). Both boys are the same age at 19, but Hae-joon’s antics means he winds up getting his ear pulled by “eldest son” San-ha, LOL.
Rounding out our sibling trio is Jung Chae-yeon (The Golden Spoon) as the maknae Yoon Joo-won, who’s two years younger than the boys. With her bright smile and effervescent personality, she basks in the affection and protection of her brothers, despite their different surnames earning them questioning gazes.
While the kids are at school, the noodle restaurant owner Jung-jae sits down for a simple dinner with their other parent — Choi Moo-sung (Your Honor) as the police officer Kim Dae-wook. Turns out Jung-jae is Dad #2, while Dae-wook is Dad #1 presumably because he’s a year older. Though he still ends up on the receiving end of Jung-jae’s nagging, hee.
Our family quintet may not share the same blood, but a deep and sincere love forges their bond. Whether it’s placing food in their sibling’s bowl, or running through the rain together, they’re there for each other through thick and thin. And when San-ha locks himself in his room to sulk, Hae-joon and Joo-won are waiting on the other side, coaxing him out with reassuring smiles. No matter what others say, they’re a family all the same — they’re just special in their own way.
Helmed by PD Kim Seung-ho (Joseon Attorney) and written by Hong Shi-young, Family by Choice is slated for an October 9 premiere.

I'm planning on trying this one. I haven't seen the original, so I'll be (*hopefully*) enjoying this on its own merits. I know it will probably become more of a melodrama as it goes, but gosh the trailer looks sweet! It's giving me Twinkling Watermelon vibes. And it's on Viki's coming soon list in the US!

Come to think of it, the Twinkling Watermelon vibes are probably thanks to the dad 😊

This looks fun and heartwarming.
So, how likely is it that this is going to be ruined by a love triangle?

US availability: Pleased to report JTBC’s FAMILY BY CHOICE is on Viki US’s “Coming Soon” list.
For once no availability angst.
I will be here for Choi Moo-sung who was recently so good as dad in ENA’s LIKE FLOWERS IN SAND (Netflix).

I have yet to finish Go Ahead because Song Wei Long is sooo bland. And the otp romance sometimes feels like grooming, though it is not because their age are not that different (2 years apart?). Or it is not feel natural since older bro seems to force his feeling toward little sis? I don't know something isn't right lol

I had the same gripe while watching Go Ahead, so I can understand you. Also, I agree that the actor playing Ling Xiao was too bland, unlike the one playing Ziqui (Zhang Xincheng), who stole the show with his charisma.

Watching it right now, and I couldn't agree more. I so don't like Ling Xiao. Ugh. But I'm half way through it. Just love the dads <3

Loved the OG CDrama. the warmth, the love it exudes was just on the right note. it also made me cry a number of times. i was hooked on the family drama more than the love triangle, or whatever anybody would call it.
i hope family of choice can be at par [would love it if they surpass] the OG drama.
when i say surpass, its just that at times, a second look at the drama can give it a better twist or the storyline can be readjusted for a seamless and effortless delivery.
take the more substantial character development of Kdrama 18 Again vs the OG film 17 again.
Though both Chineses BL dramas Addicted (2016) and Stay with Me (2023) are grounded and well made, they adjusted the script to make the latter more grounded and updated.

The cast are all perfect for their roles so I hope that and the interesting story in a more condensed version will make this a very good standalone drama.

Choi Won-young and Choi Moo Sung as the dads has got me excited! Go Ahead has been on my list forever, so I'm going to have to move it up the list.

I have cautious hopes for this one. While the original certainly had its’ problems, it also did a fantastic job pulling me in emotionally, portraying the found family relationships and even the girls friendship when they become adults. I wouldn’t mind seeing the evil mom role toned down a bit.

I would've preferred Choi Moo sung and Choi Won young's toles to be switched. The former is a versatile actor and the Chinese counterpart Tu Song Yan is a chameleon. CWY imo is a limited actor, he has too big shoes to fill. Nonetheless, if the show is able to replicate the wonderful intro episodes of Go Ahead, it may already become a favorite.

I watched the C-drama! I can't believe it because I so rarely watch Chinese TV. It was great. (Yes of course there was a love triangle, what do you think, come on. 😔) Sometimes Korean takes on other source material are amazing and sometimes they get incredibly crazy and overblown. (Ah, Today's Webtoon, you flew too near the sun.) I hope this will be one of the ones that warms your heart EVEN MORE than the original. And does justice to Hwang In-yub!

So, this is going to be 16 episodes? I am worried it will focus too much on romance and drop a lot of the family theme that made the original special.
Also for people who have seen the Chinese drama and who are from China, can you explain the romance part to me? I understand it a little, but not really.
