Premiere Watch: Dear Hyeri

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: ENA
Genre: Romance, melodrama, office
Episode count: 12
Global streamer: Viki

Reasons to watch: Shin Hye-sun is always a reason to watch, and her performance here playing a woman with two different identities is sure to be one for the books. Add in Lee Jin-wook and Kang Hoon and Jeon Bae-soo. Then add in PD Jung Ji-hyun of Lies Hidden in My Garden and Twenty Five Twenty One, and I’m thinking this has a lot of potential. Now, dramaland doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to portraying mental health, but that doesn’t mean that can’t change, right? Plus, the screenwriter of I’ll Find You on a Beautiful Day penned our scripts, so I’m hoping for something introspective and well-told.

TL;DR: Get ready for Shin Hye-sun to knock your socks off twice

I like Shin Hye-sun and Kang Hoon, and I'm even interested in the story. But honestly, I don't think I can do this.

Shin Hye-sun, always delivers in terms of performance, regardless of the quality of the drama itself.

Lee Jin-wook can't pick a decent script to save his life, which is a shame because he is talented.

Ill give this a probation period of 4 episodes

Judging by the trailer, the cliché-laden portrayal of mental health issues will continue.

I will watch the first two episodes, bc I like the leads, but honestly, this feels like a drop already.

I hate the mental healt depiction even from just watching a glimpse the trailer, but I will watch it like I watch soul-swapping and time-travel dramas.

I am looking forward to this as we are gradually seeing more high profile actors starring in films and dramas that have mental health portrayed front and centre; Kim Jiyoung born 1982, Dr Slump and Daily Dose of sunshine got some elements right. The more the subject matter is out there and people are talking about it hopefully that will raise the profile and we will see mental health mainstreamed without the love cures all or Dr/patient inappropriate relationships being portrayed as the best ways to approach to symptom management.

I can't handle fictional depictions of DID, whether Korean or western.

You're telling me that the classic "Three Faces of Eve" wasn't accurate? I'm devastated. Eve Black was such a perfect complement to Eve White!

IIRC Eve turned out to be an iatrogenic case, just like Sybil

I haven't seen that movie but is sounds so unproblematic! Taking up mental health issues and dealing with race in a positive way, too?

Uhm, I know that in writing, it's easy to be misunderstood, so just to make sure; I didn't mean that, I was being sarcastic.

If it helps, Eve White and Eve Black are just the names of the personas!

But, yeah, DID is an incredibly controversial diagnosis in the field for a reason.

It definitely makes it less horrible.

I started watching ep. 1. This is not a drama about a person with DID, it is a drama about some rude, narcissistic brat who does not stop talking.

FL is so full of herself, so massively annoying and painful to watch that I stopped watching after 20 long minutes.

DROPPED

Thanks for the heads up. I must have a gene in my Drama DNA that makes me immune to Shin Hye Sun's charms as an actress. She's done rude and narcisistic before, so I'm passing.

I'm 26 minutes into ep1 and barely hanging on so I came here to see what beanies think. Opinions are mixed but mostly negative, in this small sampling at least. Maybe I'll ff until Kang Hoon appears.

Is it is so hard for them to find an actor who has committed 0 sexual assaults? I like the actress and even the story sounds interesting but once I found out about that predator, I can't stomach watching this.

Unfortunately the industry only chooses to blacklist those who are involved in financial crimes, traffic crimes or minor drug offences. Or harass actors who have very tangential relation to someone, relative or staff, who has any scandal and drag their brand reputation into the gutter with zero involvement and ruin their personal lives over nothing. Very few bullying incident accused actors get blacklisted too but the assault actors mainly get a clean chit because they win a not guilty verdict and at once paint any victims who came forward as a faker who retracted and apologized in the media uniformly as if it's a standard PR statement. But then theres those who make comebacks even when they are found guilty(mainly the old actors who got free passes) of assault both physical and secual.

I love watching this, even if Hye-ri seems very ... like someone is acting out their idea of a person with very low IQ, I mean "can-only-just-manage-in-the-world"-level IQ.
And as I've said before, I consider the split personality to be as realistic as WandaVision (that I'm also watching and which is sooooo spacey, now I'm at the third episode) or any soul-swapping, timetravelling, doppelganger fantasy I have seen, and then it is exciting. But it's a very guilty pleasure because fantasy depictions of actual mental health issues are harmful.

What a strange story so far! It is so unusual that I do not know how to take it. But, I am intrigued. So, I will give it another week. This could be spectacular or a spectacular failure.
