Kim Tae-ri meets her mentor, teacher, and rival in Jeongnyeon

Promotions are rolling in for tvN’s upcoming period drama Jeongnyeon — The Star Is Born, highlighting its all-female lead cast. Playing the role of the titular heroine Yoon Jeong-nyeon is Kim Tae-ri (Revenant), and around her are the women who propel her towards a new life on stage.

The first teaser shows Jeong-nyeon’s future mentor Moon Ok-gyung, played by Jung Eun-chae (Your Honor), taking the stage as a prince in a play. Capturing the hearts of her adoring audience, Ok-gyung has carved her name in the women’s theater scene, yet even under the bright lights and cheers, she feels listless. Ok-gyung says that nothing is fun anymore, but that all changes when Jeong-nyeon literally bursts through her doors, demanding to be her student.

As Ok-gyung watches Jeong-nyeon entrance a crowd, she asks how she learned to “sing” like that, and Jeong-nyeon explains that she simply listened and picked it up. Ok-gyung recognizes her natural talent for the craft and chooses Jeong-nyeon as her successor, confident that she will soar faster and further than anyone else.

Next in Jeong-nyeon’s journey to the stage is Ra Mi-ran (Cold Blooded Intern) as troupe leader Kang So-bok. Right before the doors close, Jeong-nyeon runs in, arms flapping, and announces her desires to try out for the troupe. However, after she passes the test, it seems Jeong-nyeon has caught So-bok’s attention as she calls her names multiple times — though often not positively.

Once Jeong-nyeon sings, So-bok cannot deny the fact that she is skilled, and her hands tremble as she watches the new face who popped out from nowhere. For a student who wishes to be the best, there is only one thing a troupe leader expects from them: follow your own path to the very end.

Last but not least is Jeong-nyeon’s rival Heo Young-seo played by Shin Ye-eun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse). Talented and connected, Young-seo is the star trainee amongst the students, and even Jeong-nyeon acknowledges her abilities. While our lead looks forward to challenging herself against her new rival, Young-seo scoffs at her arrogance, believing Jeong-nyeon to be beneath her.

Young-seo’s antagonisms fuels Jeong-nyeon to be better since they won’t know who will come up on top until they try, and the battle between the born-genius with no ties and the elite among the elite begins. While Young-seo vows to make her know her place, Jeong-nyeon stares her down and warns her that one day she may stand before her.

Directed by PD Jung Ji-in (The Red Sleeve Cuff) with scripts penned by Choi Hyo-bi (A Time Called You), the webtoon adaptation Jeongnyeon — The Star is Born is slated for twelve episodes and premieres October 12.

I don't really know what this drama is about (I only see the pictures to avoid spoilers), but of course a Kim Tae Ri drama is giving massive GL energy.
That last poster... Tell me that's a confirmed OTP. 😏

The character that was supposed to be her love interest supposedly got written out of the drama version. 🤷‍♀️ I dunno what is going on. It would be a good thing if they explore that part of the story though

Wait, so this really was a GL???
I was just saying wtv because Kim Tae Ri, and because of that poster with Jung Eun Chae and Kim Yoon Hye (they look great together). But now I'm annoyed. They need to stop doing this.

As far as I know, the pairing on the last poster was confirmed to be canon (in the webtoon) by the author. I didn't read the webtoon, so I don't know how much of a thing it is there, but I hope the drama plays into this (the poster certainly does).

I just read a few comments on reddit and apparently the webtoon has multiple couples, so I guess they're one of them. But they literally erased one of the main characters of the story to not make it queer, so I don't know what to expect from them. The poster could be bait.

Yeah, my expectations are low in that regard. It's already bad enough they removed the main love interest, so the least they can do is not make it worse than it already is.

They have erased all on the lovelines but some subtle attraction and tension might still exist.

Yikes. I hope this drama flops so bad.
This is even worse than Return of Gangster, which already was a success and proved they can do wtv they want with queer stories.

I don't think they ever said anything about other lovelines though. I think the most they said was that elements of the removed character would be given to other characters, and that's really all we know.

I am so excited for this!!

The show is already in litigation.

MBC accused the production companies of 'Jeongnyeon' of stealing its project and interfering in contract negotiations, claiming that Studio N and Management mmm violated the Unfair Competition Prevention Act. Originally, 'Jeongnyeon' began its production at MBC, with the broadcasting station participating in preliminary research, filming location scouting, and casting. During the negotiation, MBC offered the drama production companies 2 billion KRW per episode in production funds to secure 'Jeongnyeon' for its broadcasting lineup.

However, shortly before filming began, Studio N accepted another offer from tvN for 2.8 billion KRW in production funds per episode. Then, once tvN picked up the production of 'Jeongnyeon', several of MBC's drama production crew members including Jung Ji In PD left the broadcasting station, relocating to tvN. As a result, MBC is demanding damages from the production companies.

If the two sides fail to reach a settlement mediated by the court, it is likely that the case will proceed as a formal lawsuit. This would mean the airing of 'Jeongnyeon' would be postponed indefinitely until the lawsuit's conclusion.

The negotiation between the two parties began in 2022, following the production companies' proposal to MBC on the series’ broadcast and production budget in November of the same year. However, the three companies and MBC failed to reach an agreement on the production cost, leading the studios to broadcast the series on another TV channel, tvN. The producers said, "MBC delayed negotiations on production costs despite repeated requests from the producers until the point where filming was imminent, creating a situation in which the producers were forced to comply with unreasonable MBC conditions. In the end, the producers never reached an agreement with MBC on production costs, and MBC told them to go to other channels if they could go to other channels until 20 days before filming began, so the producers took more than a month's delay in filming and moved to other platforms."

The producers also claim that they acquired their own investors to make the project after MBC refused to come to an agreement on payments for production costs.

I hope this does meet the current release schedule as it looks like a great drama and a story that needs to be told.
If as @welh640 updates suggest there is no real progress in the negotiations we could see another last minute removal from the schedule like they did with Resident playbook😬
