[Beanie Recs] Dramas to cure second lead syndrome
by DB Staff
Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. We’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short.
I’ve had second leads on the brain since Lovely Runner ended earlier this year. But now that I’m dabbling into some episodes of DNA Lover, I’m really dying to know of any romance dramas where the second lead prevails. I know, I know, it’s a terrible spoiler! But truthfully, I go into dramas assuming I know the conclusion anyway (spoiler: the OTP ends up together). So, I won’t be disappointed, I just need an SLS cure. Male or female, are there any dramas where a second lead actually wins?
Have a very particular drama itch that needs scratching? In need of a Beanie Rec? Email us at hello @ dramabeans.com and we’ll feature your topic in a future post.

I'm confused by the prompt: A drama where the OTP ends up together but a second lead wins? 🤔

I think they mean they usually know the (spoiler-y) conclusion of dramas they watch - that the OTP will end up together. So they are okay with knowing the ending in advance and would like recs for shows that end with the SL (male or female) winning.

I think I must avoid this discussion because I prefer not to know spoilers about love triangles 😅, but I can give some ideas. Of course, spoilers ahead:
_ Queen Seon Deok. (Even though there is tragedy too).
_ Love Alarm 2.
_ King of Baking. (Fortunately, FL and SML ended up together, because I didn't like her at all).
_ Yumi's cells. Kind of.

Love Alarm 2:
This must be the single MOST triggering example for me ever -- to the point that I used to wake up crying for a few consecutive days after I watched the ending (one I consider absolutely appalling and dystopic).
It's a very good story, but I cannot watch it again for the sake of my sanity and worldview. It makes me too sad (*whispers* and yes, the 2ML gets the girl)

I'm not a fan of that drama. I watched Seasons 1 and 2 in a row (one of the first ten k-dramas I watched).
I had no idea that SML Syndrome existed but I liked the second male lead (Jung Ga Ram) and the ending. Later I knew that many people were disappointed, and I understand it. It was very unusual.
That was the first time I saw Kim So Hyun and Song Kang.

I think Reply 1988 would be the most obvious example. Though it's slightly hard to define first lead or second lead in the show but if we go purely by star billing, the not-ML gets the girl.

Reply 1988 is not valid. the jung whatever was never the lead. he never had any background story, it was always Taek that had a strong background story

This happened in the past, eg Bae Yong-joon was supposedly the 2ML but winning the girl over 1ML Kim Seung-woo in Hotelier (2001) plus a few other examples. That was however in the era of live production when the broadcaster would be able to change the script according to audience reaction.
With everything now fully produced before airing, the chance of changing the course is null unless it’s a deliberate script for ML swing.

Oh yes, I know I had a major omission!
Beautiful Days is a favorite of mine from the early years. Lee Byun-hun is so charismatic that his getting the girl instead of Ryu Si-won made every dramatic sense and more importantly, the fans happy. That’s the magic of live production in those days.

Yes! Lee Byun-hun was such a brooding smoldering Byronic male lead, I had a major crush on him because of BD. If he didn't get the gal, I would riot lol.
And a very young Shin Min Nah played his lil sister then. Wow, time flies

It was amazing how the fans had so much pull that writernim was forced to change the OTP.
LBH was allegedly not happy with the changes. I think he wanted to play the character as he wasnoriginally intendes.
He was charismatic so I do blame the fans at the time to favor his Min Chul over the boring Sun Jae.

OK, we all know that these recommendations have to be major spoilers now, yes?
They say this is true about Start Up, but that has a lot to do with how they decided to focus the audience's attention in the first few episodes--and the fact that Kim Seon-ho and, especially, Nam Da-reum, are scene stealers. But this is the best match I know of.
Another example that's not really a good example is Check Out the Event. I don't even know I'd recommend this short drama, but the long of the short of it is, you think the FL is going to heal and pick the new, sweet, ML (at least he has more screentime than her ex), but she doesn't pick him. She goes back to the jerkwad.

Start-Up may have ignited one of the most intense shipping wars in recent years.
All I know is I had to stop mid-show because it is too morally revolting to witness a ML, who is egregiously and shamelessly committing identity fraud with nary a prick on his conscience, get the girl.

I have gotten SLS only twice (three if you count Doctor Cha, which I do not because it was not a traditionally structured romance). Start Up was one of them. I dropped it early on when I found out that he was not the ML but the 2ML.
I think it's even bigger when the story isn't clear who the ML is. Castaway Diva had pretty furious shipping wars because the ML's identity was kept secret and the viewers were thrown multiple red herrings. Heck, even when the ML's identity was revealed some people still were convinced the 2ML was the ML. My Sweet Mobster tried to do the same thing, but none of us were fooled, lol.

I rarely get the sls too.
Once was Reply 1988 which was a arguable case because none of the leads felt more prominent or "first".
The one that I clearly got sls was I Can Hear Your Voice. I was extremely dissatisfied with the noona romance. It was very badly done imho, especially when the sml was such a lovely man.
Just Between Lovers was the only other one, (second female lead syndrome)
The Spies Who Loved Me and Blood Free are dramas that I would have been ok with either pairing.

Actually, if you think about it, the grandmother and 2nd Lead stole the male lead´s identity. The male lead was the kid who won the contest in the newspaper. That was why the 2nd lead was beggin the male lead to pretend to me the one that really wrote the letters. But, whatever, I was very happy that Dal-mi ended up with Do-san, the male lead.

Jepp, exactly :) Do-san also declared without hesitation after meeting her once he liked her, his feelings were always real and very clear. Dimples on the other hand said no and took much longer than the average viewer to find out he actually likes her, too.
Plus, Do-san is a guy who stress knits, he'll always win in my book ;)

Love Alarm. Heck, this show is rather hated online in big part because of the SML winning (even though he was by far the better person, and the right person for her). The show is by no means perfect, but I stand by my point that the show is far better than the online reception makes it seem like. Set your expectations right, keep an open mind, and you might actually really enjoy it.
The only other example I know of is Reply 1988, but I'm not sure if that counts because I don't think that show has a clearly defined male lead.

You're right! I take it back!
On a more serious note, for me, second male lead means the male lead secondary to the first in screen time, so I often miss the connotation, and it takes me a bit to realize that many people see it strictly as the other man wooing the female lead.

September 26, 2024 at 11:52 AM
I don’t see it strictly that way, but it certainly works out that way a lot! I love definitions, so I’ve been thinking about this today, and what I’ve settled on is the SML is (to me) the male character with the most story apart from the ML. In a love triangle situation this often ends up being the loser in the triangle, but not necessarily always. So in a drama like My Sweet Mobster, the SML is probably the prosecutor (unfortunately) but could also be the general manager who has his own growth and romantic arc (such as it is). Does that agree with your definition? Obviously all this goes out the window with a truly ensemble cast!

Yes!
This is exactly what makes me struggle in a story where for example we have:
A, the main lead wooing the female lead.
B, a male character having the most screentime/story/arc after A, BUT he has his own love interest
C, another male character wooing the fl, but having significantly less screen time than B!
Who is the second male lead?
Or do we not have a sml in this scenario?
This happens a lot too. Like in King the Land. Who is the sml? With the amount of time and story Sangshik and Rowoon have, neither can be called a side character. To me, they are the second leads. But Sarang's boyfriend is the one who was trying to win her... who has very little screentime and is quickly removed from the story...
It's the same in reverse too, with PH and DE, and Won's fiance.
Unaspirated
September 26, 2024 at 1:33 PM
Love Next Door is like that right now too. The SML is definitely the reporter, but he has his own love story going on, and the one who was vying for the FL’s attention was only in the drama for like 3.5 episodes. I think in those cases it’s pretty clear that the third corner of the love triangle shouldn’t count as the SML, but sometimes it’s a lot less clear cut, either because they are more even (like in My Sweet Mobster) or because there are a lot of them that could conceivably claim the title. But I also think that what the Beanie who wrote in meant was a male or female character in a pretty prominent love triangle (like, a major plot point threaded through a majority of episodes) who ends up with the male or female lead instead of the other lead. And since I’m just not confident that happens in dramas in the last few years, I welcome all the other interpretations!

September 26, 2024 at 1:37 PM
I was all, Rowoon? Rowoon was in KtL? And then I remembered--but he'll always be Prince Flight Attendant to me. ☺
In an uninteresting irony the guy who played Sarang's lame ex-boyfriend is the same actor (Ahn Woo-yeon) that I mention above in my own post: the one who was the very sympathetic ML in Check out the Event who did NOT win the girl because she went back to her WAY more immature ex. So frustrating.

If that were true, this prompt would have no answers because all the "male leads" would've gotten the girl.
I disagree, the ML is whoever the production team says it is because they decide which actor gets top billing. The 2ML getting the girl doesn't automatically make him the ML.

I was all excited clicking on this thinking we were all going to get to list our least favorite SMLs! If that doesn't cure you of SLS, I don't know what can! 😂
But now that I understand the request better, I'm a bit more confused. I sort of thought part of the definition of the SML was that he wasn't part of the OTP? This is why dramaland love triangles can be a bit tiresome - there generally isn't any actual suspense. Maybe DNA Lover (which I'm following through recaps) will prove me wrong, but the poor SML isn't even in the poster... Regardless I'm excited to draw on the Beanies' collective knowledge to have to revise my definition!

I think that the trick here is that the "ML" is the one you perceive during the show to be the one who'll succeed, not the biggest name or the one listed first on cast lists. So, then, by analogy the "2ML" would be the underdog who prevails in the end.

Yeah. One of the reasons I ended up with a lot of SLS because I didn’t know any of the actors so couldn’t draw the conclusion as to who the ML is. So you go by what you see and who you think is the best guy out there and end up getting a severe SLS when you realise you were wrong all along.
These days it doesn’t happen anymore.

Thanks, both of you!
It's really hard for me to go into a show without preconceptions about who will succeed given a love triangle - even if you are someone who stays away from promos, the poster at the top of recaps would tell you a lot. I'm curious to know which older dramas were more ambiguous, Blue!
I also think if a show is structured around a love triangle in a big way, the marketing team does more to make it unclear, but I haven't watched many of those.

I just generally dislike Second Male Leads, find that even if they are perfect, they are annoying in their perfection, and never root for them to win. So I am happy that the only one of the shows mentioned that I've seen is Reply 1988, which I regarded more as a kind of group coming of age drama, and never bought into the romance in the first place. I will go out of my way to avoid Love Alarm.
But, at the risk of going off topic (and this would be the first time for me to do so) what about Second FEMALE leads? Has there ever been one of those who was successful? Because almost every show, the Second Female Lead is stunningly beautiful, more talented than the FL, and a better choice for the ML and his flaws.
Look no further than the ongoing show, Love Next Door (although I have to admit, I dropped that one a few episodes ago, partly because I thought the male lead deserved neither woman, so I don't know if something developed with the 2FL to make her less desirable.)

If you're open to other modalities of Korean romance stories, there is a whole SLEW of Korean comics and webnovels where the second male lead turns into the male lead and wins the female lead, although she is not the same female lead who rejected him in the original story. The premise often seems to be a Korean girl who preferred the 2ML and had SLS getting transmigrated into the body of a side character in the story, and then the original 2ML, now the ML of this new story, falls for her. Warning, though, usually the original FL turns out to be a "white lotus," meaning she is not as good as the original story made her seem.
Some specific titles:

For My Derelict Favorite
Long After the Ending

While they had a separate love line, Lee Dong-wook and Yoo In-na were so popular as the secondary couple in Goblin that they got their own show as the OTP in Reach of Sincerity (also known as Touch Your Heart).
Talking of secondary couples, the 2nd leads in Descendants of the Sun (Kim Ji-won and Jim Goo), Crash Landing On You (Seo Ji-hye and Kim Jung-hyun) and Business Proposal (Kim Min-kyu and Seol In-ah) had their own fanbase.
The love triangle of the secondary leads (Lee Soo-hyuk, Shin Do-hyun and Kang Tae-oh) in Doom At Your Service is one of my favorites.
I also liked Kang Tae-oh with Choi Ri as the secondary couple in My First First Love and Kim Seon-ho with Go Won-hee in Strongest Deliveryman.

Lee Dong-wook and Yoo In-na in Goblin is a very good example of a 2nd leads CP that arguably upstaged even the 1st leads CP (I am in this camp!)
So one way we can argue for the manifestation of SLS is:
when we as fans would rather have more love screen-time of the 2nd leads CP than that of the 1st leads CP (not that we want our FL to end up with the 2ML cos their lines don't cross)
In current live watch, we see that in NGNL for e.g.-- where some viewers do express they like the 2nd leads CP more than the 1st leads CP and would like more screen-time of the 2nd pair (I am NOT in this camp!)

Fortunately, I wasn't on any discussion sites when I watched Start Up and Love Alarm, so I didn't know people were mad that the supposed second lead was promoted to true love in those shows. I thought it was great! Especially the weirdness of Start Up, where each ML pretended to be the other to woo the FL--years apart though.
I just approve of dramas where people do not wind up with their first love.

There was a drama chat about dramas we wish didn’t have romance a few years ago! https://www.dramabeans.com/2022/08/drama-chat-everything-but-the-romance/
And I seem to remember something about dramas that we wish had a more fleshed out or explicit romance, but it must have been a different kind of post because I’m not finding it!

There's another article about if the story really needs romance here https://www.dramabeans.com/2019/10/i-need-romance/.
I couldn't find anything related to "we wish there was romance", but there was an interesting chat about which OTP wouldn't last 😅

I have a memory of a picture from the drama Law School and people lamenting that they never got to see a romance between two of those characters, but I don’t remember what format the post was. Or maybe I dreamed it?

I remember seeing a DB instagram post saying we need romance for Isoo and Kanghyun in Flex X Cop. Perhaps you could have seen that one on IG too?

That article features a picture from Mad Dog, one of the dramas I've sincerely felt cheated out of the romance that should have been. And it would have been so good.

Queen of Reversals is a fantastic example!
Also, one of the few k-dramas, where an arrogant and immature chaebol grows and matures under the guidance of the woman he clearly loves and respects.

Haha, I think a Beanie calls this trope "the reverse taming of the shrew"!

I'm still not sure if I'm getting this right, but anyways I take any opportunity to bemoan the fact that the writers of Let's Eat and Flower Boys Next Door broke my heart with the bait and switch: the sweet and handsome guy who's always been secretly in love with us that we meet first gets left behind in the dust when the real ML shows up later on. In both dramas I found the original sweet guy more attractive than the ML. So do these two dramas qualify for this prompt?

I'm afraid I'm super useless here because on a rare occasion I do get SLS in full force, I usually do not ship the poor guy with FL because clearly the girl has a serious lack of taste to prefer ML over him, meaning my fave deserves better^^ The only problem with this kind of situation is that dramas rarely let rejected SMLs to move on and find happiness elsewhere and sometimes even kill them to ensure they never will... None of this seems even remotely fun to me.

Any prime examples of when the drama heartlessly kills off our rejected SMLs to ensure they never find happiness since they cannot be end-game with FL?
This will be PSA.
Tell us so we can avoid the heartache too lol

Sorry, my memory decided to fail me exactly the moment I needed it the most((( But first and foremost, sageuks! Even fluffy fusion youth ones were once notorious for this - I think MOONLIGHT DRAWN BY CLOUDS even had a huge controversy since it offed purely fictional SML yet let historically perished young ML have HE? I may recall it wrong, though. But in the days of yore it wasn't unusual at all - heck, sometimes even MLs weren't spared from "murder the hypotenuse" trope as long as FL choose another! Yunno, CHUNO... Modern shows have a better survival rate for everyone, but you can never be sure.

Depending on your perspective, one could argue that Rowoon's character in Extraordinary You qualifies. For plot purposes, he's such a minor character initially that he doesn't even have a name (or a face) for a while and the heroine is already has a long term (jerk of a) boyfriend.

This is a very intriguing use case cited.
Ostensibly - in the universe of the comic - Haru is an extra, and Danoh is a minor character.
But in the universe of the drama, they are actually the leads. It's not even SLS, it's "Extra" Syndrome🤣🤣
For added comic irony, Kim Young-dae (who plays the romantic male lead in the comic universe) is called Nam-joo (literally, "Male Lead")

Cheese in the Trap.
I'm glad our FL *unequivocally* chose to end up with a magnificent polished yet comforting piano.
