Premiere Watch: DNA Lover

Time slot: Saturday-Sunday
Broadcaster: TV Chosun
Genre: Rom-com, melo
Episode count: 16
Global Streamer: Viki

Reasons to watch: They won me over with the total goofiness of the premise — I mean, doesn’t a K-drama geneticist heroine (Jung In-sun) searching for the Perfect Science of Love scream OG K-drama? I’m hoping TV Chosun offers us a delightful bit of drama candy here. And if not, we still have another kind of candy with Choi Siwon and Lee Tae-hwan as our heroine’s two possible DNA lovers. But if I’m really being honest, it’s Jung Yoo-jin, our second lead female, who’s my favorite actor here. May the love chips fall in a genetically favorable way!

Worth noting: Airing opposite Love Next Door in premiere date and time slot, this will likely be the landing pad for viewers who don’t jive with that drama, or are in the mood for something a little more goofy.

TL;DR: Jung In-sun is convinced there’s a perfect DNA match for her, but either of her options look just fine to me

There are so many new dramas and not enough time to watch it all.

But we can try.

Seriously. we obviously have to choose. If there is a good one that we have to set aside then we can save it for later, when there is a Kdrama drought.

The same premiere day is one thing but the same slot is one risky decision.

I first saw her in WELCOME TO WAIKIKI (she was great) and you can also see her in MY SECRET TERRIUS (a really good show).

In this photo it does, but it isn't in reality. Jung In Sun is unfortunately always dressed as someone older. She really needs to change her stylist. The hair and the clothes both don't help.

Wacky premise which if done right should make for a great show.

Struggling a bit with this one. The wackiness is there but interspersed with more serious scenes in such a way that I find jarring.

In the first scene, Jung In-sun's boyfriend is breaking up with her telling her he is sick of hearing about DNA DNA DNA. I'm starting to feel the same way. It wouldn't be so bad if the science was somewhat accurate, but it's all made up. Mapping out your DNA cannot predict the exact age at which you will die, never mind the rest. I prefer Yumi's cells, which were represented by little animations that no one would confuse with reality. I like (more or less) realistic scenarios or fantasy situations which are used to advance the plot. Like going back in time, or having unexplained powers like talking to ghosts. Not sure about techno-babble that pretends to be real science.

And I was really annoyed with the 2ML who gave his personal number to a woman suffering from depression instead of a suicide hotline. Not only is that dumb, but probably against the rules.

And OMG, that scene where they are trying to clear the parked cars, by calling each person to come move them? I felt like tearing my hair out.
