News bites: August 28, 2024

  • The promo campaign is now out the gate for tvN’s upcoming Parole Examiner Lee, kicking things off with stills from the revenge drama’s first script reading. Starring Go Soo (Missing: The Other Side), Kwon Yuri (Good Job), Baek Ji-won (Connection), and Lee Hak-joo (LTNS), the series is slated to premiere in October with production led by PD Yoon Sang-ho (Curtain Call, River Where the Moon Rises) and writer Park Chi-hyung. • TVING announced that the new romance Love in the Big City will be launching on October 21, showcasing our story’s lead Nam Yoon-soo (Today’s Webtoon) in the first posters. Based on a bestselling novel (which also has an English translation), the drama’s scripts were penned by the original author Park Sang-young, splitting the episodes between four filmmakers to give each segment its own flavor. Notably, a part of the novel has also been adapted into a movie – starring Kim Go-eun (Little Women) and Noh Sang-hyun (Soundtrack #2) – which will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival before its wider release on October 2. • In a double whammy of Nam Yoon-soo this fall, we’ll also be seeing him in KBS’s new sitcom Dog Knows Everything (previously Nonsense). With Lee Soon-jae (Family: The Unbreakable Bond) as our hero and actor-turned-amateur detective, the new poster and teaser sees him teaming up with dog Sophie to tackle the unsolved mysteries in town. The series premieres on September 25 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot. [KBS, MBC]
  • The script reading stills have also been released for the fantasy romance My Girlfriend Is a Tough Guy. Headlined by Yoon San-ha (Romance in the House), Arin (Alchemy of Souls), Yoo Jung-hoo (Durian’s Affair), and Chuu (Dating Class), the webtoon adaptation has now entered filming and is aiming to broadcast early next year. [Newsen]

  • The Busan International Film Festival unveiled their “On Screen” section list, lining up six dramas to screen at the festival this October. Two are international: Netflix’s Japanese drama Beyond Goodbye and Netflix’s Taiwanese series Born for the Spotlight. The remaining four then come from Korea’s side, including: TVING’s Dongjae, the Good or the Bastard (previously Good or Bad Dong-jae), Disney+’s Gangnam B-Side, Netflix’s Hellbound 2, and TVING’s Way Back Love (previously A Week Before I Die). [SBS]
  • In the meantime, promos continue on SBS with new stills of Park Shin-hye (Doctor Slump) as our title’s The Judge from Hell. Here to bring judgment on those most deserving, her time in the mortal realm will also entangle Kim Jae-young (Love in Contract), Kim Ah-young (Miss Night and Day), and Kim In-kwon (Parasyte: The Grey). The fantasy romance will be airing weekends, beginning on September 21. [SBS]

I read Love in the Big City last year and it's really good. I hope the movie and drama do it justice.

I'm curious about Parole Examiner Lee. Go Soo's last dramas, Money Game and Missing the Other Side 1 and 2, were pretty good. He makes good choices.

I thought Love in the Big City was a movie, not a TV show.

It's confusing, the movie and drama seem to be separate projects - though they're releasing around the same time. 😵‍💫

I don't know if the drama version will keep the English title, though? We might not have enough Lovely titles yet so maybe we'll get a Lovely City or something lol

Oh, thank you.

It's kinda weird. Do we need to watch the movie first to understand the TV show? Or the opposite? There are separated stories?

The movie is based on a section of the novel about the character Jae-hee. The drama, I think, is doing the whole story, which I'm guessing is 4 sections? 1 for each director? But I haven't read the novel... maybe I'll read the novel this weekend lol...

Quick update: I bought the e-book lol. There are four sections/chapters and Jae-hee is the first one, so it may be safe to watch the movie first without too many plot spoils for the end.

Thank you!

It's quite weird to adapt one novel in different formats.

Wait, "The Judge from Hell" has romance? huh.

Go Soo is so handsome. His acting is so-so, to be honest. But his previous dramas Missing: The Other Side 1 & 2 were SO GOOD. And so I want to recommend them here to anyone looking for a good drama to watch. Better than the dramas playing right now, dare I say.

Parole Examiner Lee is a revenge drama!? Hmm.

I'm all for the original author writing drama scripts and hopefully improving them but then handing them over to five different people!? Well there is a reason why the fingers of a hand are different. Interesting to have four directors for a drama and (I think) another one for the movie. Seems like a strange choice but it just may be the next big thing. 😂

Yoon San-ha 😍❤ well I am crazily in love with him so *fingers crossed* for this to be his big break to catapult him into the major leagues.
