News bites: August 27, 2024

Kim Soo-hyun, Jo Boa

  • Disney+ announced that Knock Off has been slated to premiere in 2025, with Kim Soo-hyun (Queen of Tears) staking a claim in the growing market for designer fakes in 1990s South Korea. But the black comedy will have hijinks in store when ex-girlfriend and cop Jo Boa (Destined With You) starts a crackdown operation on counterfeit goods. Production is being led by the duo behind Song of the Bandits, PD Park Hyun-seok (Forest of Secrets 2) and writer Han Jung-hoon (Bad Guys, Police Unit 38). [MBC]

  • Channel A is working on a new mystery romance, with Got7’s Jinyoung (Yumi’s Cells) out to prove that the ostracized Noh Jung-eui (Hierarchy) is not The Witch. Based on the same-titled webtoon by Kangfull (Moving), the drama is aiming to release in 2025 with filmmaker Kim Tae-kyun (Dark Figure of Crime) attached to direct and scripts adapted by Jo Yoo-jin. [News1]
  • New promos have dropped for U+ Mobile TV’s upcoming Fragile, introducing the students of our story’s Joong-ang High School in a new bundle of teasers: found here, here, here, and here! Starring rookies Kim So-hee, Kim Eo-jin, and Gong Joo-han among other fresh faces, class begins for the youth series on September 9. [MBC]

Clockwise: Go Soo, Kwon Yuri, Lee Hak-joo, Baek Ji-won

  • The tvN front has been busy as well, unveiling a shortened title for their next revenge series with Go Soo (Missing: The Other Side) as our Parole Examiner Lee. Taking over the Monday-Tuesday slot following No Gain No Love, the crime story will also be bringing Kwon Yuri (Good Job), Baek Ji-won (Connection), and Lee Hak-joo (LTNS) to our screens in October. [Sports Donga]
  • According to reports, tvN will also be the home for the long-awaited sci-fi and rom-com Ask the Stars. After filming officially wrapped in April 2023, the current plan is to broadcast on weekends in early 2025. Headlined by Lee Min-ho (Pachinko) and Gong Hyo-jin (When the Camellia Blooms), production has PD Park Shin-woo (Lovestruck in the City, It’s Okay to Not Be Okay) at the helm with writing by Seo Sook-hyang (Greasy Melo, Jealousy Incarnate). [Newsen]
  • In the meantime, we can expect to soon watch tvN’s historical Jeongnyeon – The Star Is Born, where the adorable Kim Tae-ri (Revenant) starts her underdog journey, following her dream to become a performer. Set during the troubled 1950s in the aftermath of the Korean War, the historical premieres on October 12, following Love Next Door in the weekend slot. [MBC]

The witch being called a mystery romance is that finally a acknowledgement of the right description for a romance with a background stalker?

Looks like things could be interesting in 2025. Hopefully dramas will be spread out more evenly, not like this year’s barren wasteland followed by a monsoon of dramas being shoehorned into the August weekend schedule.

I second this. The weekend monsoon of dramas has to stop. I work around that by watching some of the weekend shows on Mon-Thurs. 😉

Yes, I am doing that spread across the week now especially with the ones that I am not enjoying as much as the couple of standout ones we have now. I also have a few J dramas that are live watches that fill the week day empty slots but they have an unpredictable drop schedule so I either have nothing or everything on one day😞

to be fair "The Witch" is an adaptation of a comic book by Kang Full, the producers would be called out by fans of the source material if they misrepresented the story.

If this were an original screenplay im sure they would have just tagged it as a "romance" in order to scam *cough *.... i mean, reach a broader audience

Wait wait wait wait, Kim Soo Hyun and Jo Boa in a show made by a crew returning to their forte - fun con man shows set in the present, that aren't exactly ground breaking but are easily watchable??? Pinch me.
Definitely not going to be many people's favourite combination of anything, but that's fine, because all the more for me~~~

I am very interested in the Go Soo and Kwon Yuri drama. I may be in the mood for revenge later this year.

1. If Jo Boa wasn't in it, I might be interested. Alas, she is, so it's a hard pass 😔

2. The Witch sounds good.

3. I love the cast of Parole Examiner Lee. Might check it out when it airs.

4. Ask the Stars is finally going to air after all this time. I remember hearing about it a year or two ago on Dramabeans.

5. Definitely interested in Jeungnyeon. And from those images it looks like it has a retro look to it, and I'm talking specifically about the color grading.

This project had a long time on the sidelines. "Ask The Stars" started filming in Spring, 2022 and it was going to premiere in 2023. At the time of production, "Ask The Stars" will reportedly air on a domestic channel and will also be available on the global OTT streaming platform but no details were confirmed by the production company, Studio Dragon. It had a huge budget of $40.7 million (US) without a distribution deal which was risky for a sci-fi romance drama.

It will be interesting to see if the script and production demonstrate why it took so long to be released... way back when it was announced, I was under the impression Netflix would be it's international streaming home, but I wonder if that fell through? Hopefully it will be worth the wait.

Lets hope if it crashes, it really does burn (up in the atmosphere). Otherwise innocent bystanders will be hit with space debris!

Ask the Stars took forever to find a broadcaster. I thought this wouldve been aired quickly due to the big name stars.

She has superpowers. She managed to convince me she was in her teens in 25 21 but she is already in her 30s.😉

Jo Boa as a cop!! 😍 I do think she would successfully arrest everyone except Kim Soo-hyun. 😂

Kangfull's webtoon adapted by someone else. 😳 Well fingers crossed for a good adaptation.
