News bites: July 21, 2024

  • Jung Hae-in (D.P. 2) and Jung So-min (Alchemy of Souls) are the picture of a perfect summer in the latest posters, finding Love Next Door in tvN’s childhood friends-to-lovers rom-com. Coming to our screens on August 17 in the weekend slot, production has PD Yoo Je-won (Crash Course in Romance) at the helm, working again with his Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha partner, writer Shin Ha-eun. [MBC]

  • SBS announced a new historical fantasy called Return to the Palace (roughly translated), lining up Yook Sung-jae (The Golden Spoon), Bona (Pyramid Game), and Kim Ji-hoon (Death’s Game) – in addition to a special cameo by Kim Young-kwang (Evilive), reportedly. Aiming to broadcast in 2025, PD Yoon Sung-shik (Cleaning Up, Mr. Queen) is attached to direct with scripts by Yoon Soo-jung (Sassy Go Go, King’s Face). [Osen, SBS]

  • New stills have come out for JTBC’s upcoming A Prefabricated Family, along with the update that filming has wrapped and the coming-of-age romance is now discussing a fall premiere. Based on the hit Chinese drama Go Ahead, the Korean remake stars Hwang In-yub (Why Her), Jung Chae-yeon (The Golden Spoon), and Bae Hyun-sung (Miraculous Brothers), as well as our two dads, Choi Won-young (Twinkling Watermelon) and Choi Moo-sung (Like Flowers in Sand). [Sports Chosun]
  • KBS’s Perfect Family has a gallery of photos for us as well, taking a peek into the (for now) ordinary student life of our title family’s daughter Park Joo-hyun (The Forbidden Marriage), attending school with Kim Young-dae (Moon in the Day), Choi Ye-bin (Night Has Come), and Lee Shi-woo (Boyhood). Also starring Kim Byung-chul (Doctor Cha) and Yoon Se-ah (Sweet Home 2), the mystery series premieres on August 14 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot. [Osen]

  • The ever-riveting Sohn Hyun-joo (Captivating the King) and Kim Myung-min (Law School) dominate the screen in new character teasers for ENA’s upcoming Your Honor: found here and here. In a twisted game of cat-and-mouse with the former’s son Kim Do-hoon (7 Escape – Resurrection) being the accidental killer of the latter’s son Heo Nam-joon (The Impossible Heir), the suspense-thriller unfolds on August 12 next month. [MBC]
  • Also coming this summer, TV Chosun’s DNA Lover released a new group poster, setting down the confusing path to find our destined-but-also-science-certified soul mate. With Choi Siwon (Death’s Game), Jung In-sun (Grand Shining Hotel), Lee Tae-hwan (Thirty-Nine), and Jung Yoo-jin (Celebrity) leading the way, the rom-com will be airing weekends starting August 17. Okay, Jung Hae In & Jung So Min!!! 🫰👏🫰 So looking forward to this, also like the poster vibe (which, granted, reminds me a bit of the DR SLUMP poster, which mustn’t be bad thing. Though my inner ahjumma is sighing again due to the sitting-on-the-floor in white trousers 😂)

Both FAMILY dramas sound interesting. Though… 🤔 Actually I never get why things get remade (a reason why I did not watch SUITS since I’ve seen the original, and so… what’s the point?*)… Or, I do get it: obviously the show is well received regionally if it features known actors. And depending on airing date of the original, the remake can be “dusted up” or made more modern. But here, the drama is only from 2020, so not really that old. Did anyone watch the original GO AHEAD? What did you think?

*Other than PHS, obviously! 😂

Go Ahead was really good. The fathers are important and I'm really happy with the choice of the actors for them. Not sure about the actors for the young characters.

Go ahead is in my top 3 Chinese dramas and I am looking forward to this remake. I expect it will have some broad similarities and then have some K-drama elements to add to the storytelling. I will view them as separate entities.

With Boys over flowers, meteor garden, BOF Thai, I could view each drama for itself. But this time, I think I will need to work hard on this.

@bunnysonaki and me have been talking about Go Ahead lately.
And we agree.
I think it was a beautiful, very moving show in its first third, and then... some unlikeable or incomprehensible things happen (at least from my point of view).
But this drama made me know Zhang Xincheng, which was the real star of the show, imo.

Thanks for the mention. I was just thinking that Bae Hyun-sung has his work cut out for him having as I don't think anyone could give the role justice like Zhang Xincheng did. I am an anti-fan of comparisons but I can't help but think of it.

I like Bae Hyun-sung, and I think he has been rewarded with the best character in the show (at least in Go Ahead) but as you said, Zhang Xincheng set the bar high.

Okay, then here’s to hoping those things might not happen or will be handled better in the remake…? 😆
How intriguing. I was wondering whether to watch the original rather, but now you have me convinced to wait for the Korean version. (Looking at the number of episodes, that might be a good idea… 👀)

I don’t think I could watch both. 🤔

I think at least you should watch it until the main characters go to college. It won't take you a lot of time and that was the best part.

Correction: "This drama made me know Zhang Xincheng, WHO was the real star of the show".

The three I was interested in from first mention are still ticking all the right boxes to stay on the must watch list so I am happy rom com season is back.

I am moat interested in #2 and #5. I like the saguek storyline with horror bits. And I may be in the mood for a susoense thriller.

1. Excited for Mom’s Friend’s Son! Posters look cute!

2. Nearly always willing to give an historical fantasy a chance. I wonder if this is the world-building kind or the supernatural-main-character kind?

3. This could be fun, and no matter what Choi Moo-sung as a dad is always worth watching!

I'm exited for LOVE NEXT DOOR
poster reminds me of DOCTOR SLUMP and it's friends to lovers trope. From the trailer they seemed chaotic 😍

Joining "seen that before" crowd over a poster.

Also, just how many dramas with FAMILY in the title do we need realistically speaking?

Has there been a show titled "Realistic Family" yet? Or "Family Realistically Speaking?" If not, there's always room for 2 more!

1. Mother's Friend's Son seems like a sweet deal. 🍭

2. A historical fantasy seems fun. I like the boys though not too excited about the FL but let's see.

3. Good news. 🙌 I hope it is as good as we all hope. 🤞

4. How come Kim Young-dae is looking like he just time traveled to the future from the sets of Extraordinary You!

5. Unmissable.

6. Worth a look. 😂👌
