Kim Yoon-seok’s Frog croaks but no one is here to hear

Netflix’s new mystery-suspense The Frog has come creeping in with their first teaser, returning Kim Yoon-seok (Noryang: Deadly Sea) to dramaland after almost 20 (!) years. But his quiet life in the woods is about to be upturned when an unhinged Go Min-shi (Sweet Home 3) arrives as a guest at his cottage.

Opening the teaser on that fateful day, the scene is already tense as we watch a wary Jeon Young-ha (Kim Yoon-seok) greet the unexpected Yoo Sung-ah (Go Min-shi). Although Young-ha tries his best to stay calm, he’s perturbed by Sung-ah’s erratic behavior, which then quickly escalates to red alert. Seriously lady, who are you, what have you done with Jinny’s Kitchen’s Go Min-shi, and I hold you responsible for my insomnia tonight.

This leads Young-ha to start investigating on his own and when he faces Sung-ah again, he’s no longer using honorifics. We don’t yet know, of course, what the back story is. But whatever is happening also involves the shocked motel owner Yoon Kye-sang (The Kidnapping Day) and tenacious police chief Lee Jung-eun (Miss Night and Day).

With all our invested parties upping their game in the closing sequence, Young-ha arms himself in preparation as the croak count ticks higher. We then end the teaser on Young-ha’s reflection as he thinks about the well-known philosophical question of whether a tree makes a sound if it falls in a forest with no one around to hear it.

Written by Sohn Ho-young with PD Mo Wan-il (A Couple’s World) at the helm, Netflix’s 8-episode series The Frog will be launching on August 23.

I like getting exposed to the work of film actors! I wonder if Korean film actors in Korea like their western counterparts have recognised that nowadays TV acting doesn’t have to be prestige lowering and in fact could be prestige TV as well as being well paid for some.

It's a shock to me that film actors get more than TV actors even in the prestige department. We glorify films a lot and they're not necessarily the best format for every story but then no is it necessary to drag it out (looking at you soap operas 🙄)

It's weird to see them on the same project weekly. At least it's less brutal on TV.

She looks more and more like Kim So Yeon with age, wow. They could play as blood relatives someday.

I thought she kind of looked like a young Kim Min-hee when I first saw her. Now, if she could be as successful in Chungmuro, that would be great. It's too bad Min-hee's personal life ruined her career.

Now that you've said it... KSY vibes are still stronger, imo - perhaps because I'm more familiar with her.

Idk about Chungmuro, but GMS's career seems doing fine in terms of dramas, no? Not super great, but I've only heard good things about her acting and she doesn't seem being typecasted either...

I haven't seen much of her work, but I agree. She should establish herself in dramaland first.

Not sure I want to delve into the crazy life of a female nutcase. If it's too scary I can't sleep at night. I might have to see if fellow beanies live through it first. Brave ones-live to tell me your story!

You certainly have my attention with a delightfully unhinged Go Min-si.

Gosh that's how you do a thriller. Delightfully unhinged. If it's on Netflix it could very well be a single drop. Huh!?
