Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (June 15, 2024)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

Dare to Love Me: Fish kiss and face squeeze were a bit much this week — even for me! — but I’ll take it in exchange for L’s dimpley smile. My favorite thing about this show is our hero’s criticisms of people’s manners. This was really prevalent the first few weeks but has slipped a bit. I wish they leaned into it more, because having L school people on rudeness is great fun. That said, there was a great scene of that this week, where he told a bad dude he had a rude mouth LOL.

Connection: Started this after hearing good things, and wow the first ep really does chuck you right into the heat of things. I’m only one episode in, but I really like the way this drama is shot and directed and, you know, Ji Sung is always great to watch.

Crash: AWWWWWW we are almost at the end. I am glad her dad survived, phew. I like how our little team is their own little family now. And their stray stiff puppy is now a good big dog, lol.

Player 2: We are still hijinking away and that is fun. Let us continue on in this vein.

My Sweet Mobster: It was fine, not as funny as it could have been. Uhm Tae Goo has a voice that can melt diamonds though, my God what a beautiful voice. I am enjoying his reformed gangster character. The chemistry is okay and Kwon Yul is the same, unfortunately he often plays similar roles. It is when he goes against type that I like him the most, and this isn’t against type. I shall continue on though.

Uncle Samsik: So MANY players lol. So Ahn Ki Chul might be behind it all or not. It could still be Uncle Samsik or hell even Tae Min. Who knows, but we are in the home stretch, so will find out.

Dreaming of a freaking Fairytale: This continues to be the winner in my weekly dramas. It just has so much HEART and the funnies, but HEART. The episodes zip by and I just want more. Plot twist of a BL author, unexpected, and they are handling pretty well. Initially, I thought oh maybe Baek Dong(hehehe) is gay, but they cleared that quickly, but listen if he writes a good book, we love it.

The Midnight Romance in hagwon: SWOON for our current romance and would be romance. They are hitting all the right notes here. I am curious our they are going to end this standoff with the two hagwons now. I think the discussions they are having about the system in SK are really important.

Miss Night and Day: Please please please be good. I am rooting for you

‘It could still be Uncle Samsik or hell even Tae Min’👈🏾🤣 exactly! I am still suspicious of Mr Park🧐 I am behind because of the delay with me accessing this weeks episodes so something may have been revealed about him this week.

I looked up Uhm Tae-Goo on iMDb. A lot of his credits were missing, and he didn’t appear in the cast of My Lovely Mobster because his name was misspelled. I submitted additions and corrections; hopefully, they will appear soon.

IMDb is a pain when it comes to Korean films and tv shows. Some are listed by their English titles, while others appear under a transliteration of their Korean titles. There doesn’t seem to be any logic behind it.

Asianwiki is my go-to source as well. It was my reference source for making the additions and corrections on IMDb. Since IMDb has such a large group of users, I’d like to see it do a better job of representing Korean shows and artists.

COMPLETED
The Atypical Family - It was a happy ending but I'm not sure if it was a good ending. Just left with a vague sense of dissatisfaction. Still maintain I-na was the best thing about this show (along with Joon-woo).

ONGOING
Dare to Love Me - Realised this week that this show has 16 episodes 😑.

Crash - The way the entire team worked together smoothly to apprehend Jung-wook was admirable. Love how Yeon-ho is beginning to blend into the team with his clothes - going from suits and ties to jackets and sweater vests 🥰.

Uncle Samsik - Saw the preview and decided I'll watch the last 5 episodes together next week. I think the entire arc starting with the actual coup attempt would work better at one go.

High School Return of a Gangster - Love how Deuk-heon is helping Se-kyung. The bullies framing Deuk-heon made me so mad. Also feel bad for Dong-soo and Co, who've been left adrift since Deuk-pal's passing.

Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale - Gosh how cute are these two! Although Cha-min is pretty well-sorted for a chaebol. I love watching him flail - I think my favourite bit was when he started singing a hymn to drive away 'dirty' thoughts 🤣.

STARTED
My Sweet Mobster - TBH I found the self-righteousness of the FL super grating in Ep. 1 but Uhm Tae-goo's voice got me through to Ep. 2, when she toned it down a bit. In it for the Thirsty Deer folks, who are all ADORABLE.

WATCHLIST
Planning to try out Miss Night and Day

C-DRAMAS
Up to Ep. 20 in The Double and it's still enjoyable in a 'don't think too much' way.

I'm curious about The Tale of Rose. Genre-wise, it doesn't seem to be my thing but the reviews have been good, I think?

Saw news that Follow Your Heart and The Grand Princess might both premiere next week 🤞.

The bullies in High School Return are just so immature and truly dumb kids. They are just about instant interests and no foresight.

"Could this backfire on us since we're, ya know, dealing with gangsters? Meh, a problem for another day"

Currently Watching
Dare to Love Me: 🎭🪡 Yoon-bok is so sweet, and now he knows what he really wants for the first time. And the squeeeees as Yoon-bok respectfully, but purposefully, makes sure the FL knows he like-likes her. That huge bag of supplies he packed for their date!! 😂🥰

My Sweet Mobster: 🍭🦞 Oh my gosh... I'm in love!! Silliness, sweetness, and redemption with a side of heart... I really hope they follow through with the themes and messages they introduced in ep. 1! I also hope we'll get a juicy mix of bubblegum-sweet romantic (mis)adventures and angsty backstory (I betcha some ghosts of the past will come back to haunt our ML). Also - the cat gang has cat-carrier-toting mobsters; I can't even 😂 And what a cast!! So many familiar faces and fun cameos (plus, our ML is GORGEOUS and funny, too!). #ThirstyLobsterClub

River Where The Moon Rises: 🏞🌛 (10-12) The midway point set up the dramatic arc for Act II, and things really kicked into high gear! I love the high drama, the music, the ill-fated relationships, the inevitable sense of tragedy, and the mystical epic-ness from its folktale origin. Also nice to see Na In-woo's swordsmanship training from Mr. Queen kick in. Ga-jin has successfully shaped On-dal into a warrior, and now they both have to live with the consequences of that choice. His turmoil over what he did (and now knows he is willing to do) to save his loved ones was well done. Which also leads to my other observation: there's a lot more blood in this than in some sageuks. 🫣 But now my watch will be slowed down due to three currently-airing dramas... 🐌

Finished
The Spies Who Loved Me: 👰‍♀️🕵️‍♂️ (14-16) The end was nice, but not "great." The last three episodes didn't implode, explode, or fizzle; but they did lose their fizz, like pop that's been left open on the counter too long. Still, it was a mostly fun romp about trust in relationships as told through the lens of spycraft. AND it's now my favorite Yoo Inna role!!

In other news... I'm very fickle when it comes to C-dramas and lose interest, drop, and jump ship for greener pastures with abandon... but after seeing y'all talk about it, I tried the first episode of The Double and it was WILD! It's makjang squared with... (*Continued below*)

...betrayal, attempted murder, injustice, revenge, and backflips over chairs and carriages, and that's just the first 20 minutes! I mean, the very fact that the first 18 minutes take place during a thunderstorm... ⚡️⚡️⚡️The draaaamaaaaaa, you guys... It's also filmed beautifully. It reminds me of web dramas like Provoke, and that's a good thing. Thinking about the visuals of this one and my beloved Kdramas, the last couple of new shows I've tried on Disney+ just look so utilitarian and uninspired in comparison. 😅
Mom is watching Kkondae Intern and says it's good but sad. Dad is watching The Acolyte, so my Kdrama persuasion is on pause for the moment. ALSO, one of my (irl) friends watched Mr. Queen after I recommended it, loved it, and is now enjoying Like Flowers in Sand!!!!!! All my loved ones had better watch out; I'm coming for you with my Kdrama persuasion skills 😂

My wife is eagerly consuming each episode of THE DOUBLE as it becomes available on Viki. It looks like you get what she means when she describes it as a wonderful mess of a show- it is wild and from what I have seen of it very beautifully shot indeed. Even though we have only seen a portion of the show it seems to be a truly superior Chinese Costume drama.

Yoo Inna was truly fabulous in THE SPIES WHO LOVED ME.

Live watches

Lovely Mobster
This is very similar to Dreaming of a freaking fairytale in the cartoon style actions to add humour, however I think I prefer this one as the characters have more substance. The ex gangster has such a husky quiet voice I thought it was because of the random sweet in his throat incident but it maintained for the two episodes so I guess that’s his normal voice. It’s so quiet and calming I wonder if it’s natural or cultivated as a standout feature.

Did anyone else think of Healer when he said she should close her eyes and count to ten.

Crash
I am so glad my theory was right for once re the killer. I also can’t believe the commissioners son is beyond cruel when it comes to self preservation just locking him up is not going to restore him to being human.

I liked the fact the crew finally had the chance to one up Taejoo, he was so smug when he opened the car door ready to make the arrest and take the glory.

Uncle Samsik
Still have this weeks episodes to watch. They came out a few days later than expected prior to them finally dropping I wondered if they had not been on this week due to some sports event.

High school return of a gangster
I am really enjoying this drama but it is so sad that the kids are all fending for themselves and the one teacher who is trying to be helpful really isn’t do a good job. The gangster’s following the boys on the trip to the beach and celebrating the successful learning to ride a bike was so funny. Another example of a boy not being taught to ride a bike as it was not seen as an important skill (Queen of Tears)

Dreaming of a freaking fairytale
Interesting to get some more background on all the characters. Not sure if I will stick with this one for the duration but we will see.

Binge watch
Yumi’s cells rewatch prompted by the first episode post I had to go back watch and that was it sucked in again and loving every moment.

The Atypical Family (Series review) - Mood progression: D+ / D+ / D+ / D+ / D+ / D
So the villain mommy gets a brain transplant and suddenly decides to mend her ways. And we suddenly learn that the ML’s not immune to danger in the past (come on, he didn’t find out about that previously?) and noble idiocy strikes again. Then I watch as the fantasy rules change at a whim. Of course it ends on a deus ex machina and an extremely rushed one at that.

My Sweet Mobster (Episode 1-2) - Mood: C-
While I like the angle the writer is going for with the whole ‘ex-convicts deserve another chance’ narrative, it’s kinda hard to overlook the inevitable love triangle and childhood connection cliches dumped in our faces. The story would have just been as well if not better without the FL, but maybe I can give the show another week to see if she gets any good developments?

Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale (Episode 3-4) - Mood: D
Please tell me that the tsundere ML isn’t attracted to the FL because she reminds him of his mother, please no. But this is a show where character motivations aren’t particularly great: watching the 2FL is like seeing paint dry, while the 2ML is what a writer includes in when they have terrible ideas on how to develop an OTP. He’s mysterious, sure, but I’m not that curious.

High School Return of a Gangster (Episode 5-6) - Mood: D
It’s kind of amusing that a DNA test wasn’t performed by the gangsters when Yi Heon fibbed about his relationship to, well, himself when Se Kyung did exactly just that despite Yi Heon insisting he was himself. As the show heads into finale, the real Yi Heon’s nowhere to be seen which is equal parts troubling and concerning, but regardless I doubt the story can be saved.

Crash (Episode 9-10) - Mood: D
There were many lame scenes that happened this week alongside multiple attempts to manufacture fake tension with all of the flashbacks, but nothing really beats the awful humour the writer tried to pull with the ‘he’s not a police officer’ skit. And I guess we’re well into makjang territory with the ‘coming back from the dead with a new identity for revenge’ stuff. Oh well.

Bad Prosecutor

I'm so glad I stuck around with this. That last episode was so so good! Even though completely unearned. The actors delivered all the sudden punches that the writer forgot to lead up to in the previous episodes! Felt so so good! Funny what a positive impression a great last episode can leave even though I was basically ff'ing eps 7-11. Although eps 10 and 11 did start to get better.
The first 3 eps had been sooo much nonsensical fun. Then it suddenly turned serious which wasn't bad per se, just startling and too illogical, but ended up being satisfying, because how else were they supposed to bring down the ultimate powers by sticking to logic and reason?? (or law for that matter)

Rewatched Kiss Goblin
It's so sweet and so complete despite being only 120 minutes.

Please Don't Date Him

A drama I had never heard of. (A quick dig into past WWW posts tells me that 3 Beanies did in fact watch it)

First the short version: this show was the sweetes lovely surprise I could ever wish for.

The long version: for a show that has a friggin talking fridge and an NIS microchip in its synopsis, the characters and their feelings were incredibly real. I hadn't even finished ep 1 when I felt like I have known these people my whole life. I'm even living with some of them. I know exactly how they move, how they talk, how they think... Amazing, simply amazing. Don't give any thought to the fridge and the chip, don't even read any synopsis. This show is about very normal people being very believably normal, and so sweet!

It's mind-blowing that the director and the team of the writers have so few credits to their names. They are some of the best i have ever seen in kdramaland.

I only clicked on this because I was searching in all Dramawiki pages of "List of dramas aired by networks" from 2019 to date, looking for something sweet. I clicked, saw Jun and Song Ha Yoon, and decided that it's a sign, because I had been struggling to wait for Freaking Cinderella to end to watch Jun in a non-evil role.

Him and Song ha yoon have quite an age gap here, but both of them are so so so good in their roles. Jun's acting is incredibly natural, better than any show I have seen of him. He was perfect.
Song ha yoon is also so natural that it feels like she is acting as herself.
Actually everybody feels like they're just being themselves.
The show has a bit of an ensemble cast, or at least many prominent roles, which are all so well done, nobody feels out of place. Even one of Jun's coworkers who is in only one scene feels like he naturally belongs in there.

The show is amazing in constantly flipping our perception towards the characters. Someone is depicted as not very nice, then suddenly you find yourself completely understanding their point of view, or at least how their mind ticks. Another person might be a bit of a jerk but if they says...

Continued:

Another person might be a bit of a jerk but if they says something nice it doesn't feel out of place at all. Because people aren't black and white.

After finishing Please Don't Date Him, I checked the 1st and/or 2nd episodes of Private Lives, Law Cafe, and Chef Mun, dropped them all, and landed on? Dinner Mate
I did my best to hold on to it because I loved SSH's character, but I finally dropped it at ep 7 because I disliked every single character apart from him.
It was frustrating after the immense joy that PDDH gave me. But even fast forwarding couldn't save it for me.

I'm still craving sweet dramas. Back to rewatch list it is.

Lol, I have a short list AND a long list! 😂

My short list I keep at 12 each for k- and c-dramas. My long list combined for both is probably close to 200 as well. This is why I adopted the "too many dramas, too little time" mantra earlier this year. It's also when I went to the short list/long list method. I actually rarely look at the long list anymore... just when I'm adding/dropping to the short list. I have to say, it's been a bit of a relief!

CONNECTION (Ep. 5-6) Suddenly, we week of both Jae-Kyeong and Yoon-Jin acting true professional investigators. More secrets are slowly being uncovered especially how powerful Tae-In was within the high school group. A new theme is bubbling to the surface: addiction. Tae-In is addicted to power, control and money. Jong-Soo has the chabeol family but not its respect so he is addicted to pills to overcome his inadequacies. Likewise, the late Jae-Seo seems to have led this own secret life intertwined with Tae-In’s group, including testing the drug on innocent patients with deadly consequences. The drug deal does give Jae-Kyeong the golden opportunity to get medical withdrawal treatment since he was injected with the weakened form of the drug. Will he take that opportunity or continue to be a rogue? I predict the latter.

BITTERSWEET HELL (Ep 5-6) In episode 5, we see flashbacks of No and her future husband, the prank engagement event, and their cute romantic moments. Again, the theme is not knowing a person’s real secrets. No finds out that her husband was an OR wreck, unable to cope with surgeries. Oh covered for him. No finds out that her husband drained their investment account to run away with Se-Na before faking his suicide. Episode 6 fills in the portrait of Se-Na’s life. She is a quick witted liar who is not hiding her evil intentions to destroy the Choi family. The presence of Tutor Moon in son’s after school life (now including his girl crush) is another screaming red flag as well as summarily dismissed Oh as another scorned person to the bad actort list. We get a big cliffhanger ending . . . how good is the PPL car brakes?

HOKUSAI TRUTH (NHK) A short documentary on the life Japan's iconic ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai who created the famous print, “The Great Wave.” He was an artist who made more than 30,000 works during his lifetime. He gained global fame later in life.

CONNECTION: "@welh640" Thanks for your great take on the addiction parallels. I think Connection is a hard watch for many viewers, but WOW it's a tense, mind-blowing story when you consider the quagmire Jae-Kyeong is in...where one of his worse enemies in the fight against drugs... is now himself. He's hot-temoered and desperate to get himself clean and trying hard to do it while 'managing' his addiction in order to stay undercover and not lose his job...which would take away his best chance of freeing himself from those who have kidnapped his free will. Riveting filming in those close-ups and the writing has been taut & mysterious enough to keep us guessing who's behind this all... yet flooding us with details as to what it's like on the streets and behind big business doors. I'm loving the addition of the 'quasi- honest' female reporter who's there to help him with the case, for her own reward as well of course, but she also sits there with him when the addiction keeps trying to break him. A 'good connection between these two, no matter what happens. The same with their funny college friend who adds some comic relief every once an a while when everything gets too tense for the viewer. Wish I had waited to binge-watch this. I feel definite signs of withdrawal when Viki tells me I have to wait four days to see the next episode...

The Atypical Family: 8.5 Don't spend so much time talking in the middle of a fire! How much money can the kid make finding lost treasures? Like the script for the lost good ending of Heartbeat.

Missing Crown Prince: 6.5

Crash: 6.5

Player 2 - Master of Swindlers: 6.0

High School Gangster: 7.5

My Sweet Mobster: 8.5 One of the worst titles ever, not the worst start ever.

Dreaming of a F***king Fairy Tale: 8.0 I wouldn't have believed this a week ago, but possibly not the funniest show I'm watching now.

Some Beanies have commented that since the new kid in the Atypical Family finale can summon things from the past, better not get him interested in dinosaurs. Actually, I think that would make one heck of a 2nd season :) Imagine dinos godzilla-stomping suburbs while the authorities and scientists try to figure out where they are coming from and the family tries to hide their involvement while getting the kid interested in something less messy, like stamp collecting or North Korean state secrets. I don't have any proper dino-destroying-city music to accompany this fantasy, but here's something to set the mood

Dickens almost made that happen:

As much mud in the streets as if the waters had but newly retired from the face of the earth, and it would not be wonderful to meet a Megalosaurus, forty feet long or so, waddling like an elephantine lizard up Holborn Hill."

I'm only watching shows I like so now I feel light and positive coming here. LOL

Dare to Love Me: Yoon Bok being the clingy one? 😆☺️
Yoon Ah the jealous one? 🤭😆

Openly yada yada Cinderella: "It has no nutricional value" HAHAAHAHAHHAHA.

Oh, and I clapped so hard when our Cinderella was like "who's a toy, girl? Not me. I enjoyed it too! Your fiance is good kisser. Oh, wait. You wouldn't know" 👏

Also, the sis feeding Cinderella just to smoothly steal her food is so relatable. LMAO she's my fave.

The Woman Who Plays With a Lobster: the ML is super cute. And all the characters are hilarious.

I'm glad this show isn't pretending to be something it isn't. It's cute and simple. Nothing more.

I-can't-see-anything-in-Hagwon: Joon Ho needs to start paying for Cheong Mi's meals/taxi fare. She can't keep giving him the answers for free.

Painter of the Wind (EP2): this show is so beautiful and interesting.
The dialogue and messages in the drama are all on point. And all the other aspects like acting, cinematography, etc. are great too.

Also, I finally found a believable gender bender that isn't Coffee Prince. Moon Geun Young unnie is so cute, I thought it wasn't going to work. But it did. I believe it.

Oh, and I need a MoonxMoon couple reunion now. I wouldn't mind in another sageuk.

BONUS
Interview with the Vampire (S02E05): I want to hate one character and defend another and move on, but I can't. People weren't joking when they said this was all grey.

My Siblings Romance (finale): this was my replacement for weekend/daily dramas. What am I supposed to watch now.

Girls on Fire: they should make two groups. 🥺

Pretty gutted that My siblings romance has finished but so happy for my Jungse couple, the stress they have with misunderstandings is well balanced to the heart fluttering moments.
Looking for another Korean reality show to fill the void

In the battle between our two under-budget and over-the-top comedies (time and palate constraints), I think I'm going with My Sweet Mobster. First, it's on the right side of legal. Second, it lands in the barren midweek stretch. Thirdly, Umm, Umm, Uhm Tae-goo. 😂 But, yeah, expectations remain low here.

I wasn't The Atypical Family early episodes, but at the urging of @hacja kept going and discovered a wonderful twisty, dark-humored most atypical tale that unfortunately ended not with bang, nor with a crash, but a meh. Yes, we got some glorious moments and a happy ending that didn't violate the show's time-traveling logic (tho in guise of a deus ex machina child). But if I'd my druthers, it would have ended more atypically. An awful mother wouldn't get her un-earned redemption. An "adopted" mum might find her loving side, but not forget her lethal one. A romance wouldn't be shoehorned in, but friendship elevated. And just one day I'd like a happy ending that doesn't require a model-thin shape. Still, it was great for a long spell, and the editing, cinematography and the music, especially the music, was top notch.

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon continues to give me as much stress as it gives me squees. How could you not love those two falling all over each other (literally too)? But they both have a lot of growing and maturing to do, both individually and together. I liked how Hye-jin and Joon-ho overcome their first roadblock with an assist Cheong-mi (the best). So there's hope we won't have a relationship mess like SITR. But while Hye-jin's character and her arc feels fully fleshed out, I wished Joon-ho would also have a bit more depth. And as someone from as academically cutthroat a society as SK, the workplace conflict feels uncomfortably too real (tho it would be just as impactful with less overwrought music and dialogue). Keeping fingers crossed for the second half of this one.

As for weight ideals, it was nice that this show featured three persons, no less, who needed help to get an appetite and dare eat rather than to starve themselves. Even if she ended up model thin, it was demonstratively NOT the solutions to all her problems. And "not eating" was definitely also not the solution. So that's nice.

I hear you on the partial win. After Dong-hee’s cruel depiction in the early episodes, it was a welcome surprise to see her develop into such a smart, layered character. I think all of us were rooting for her. And I do appreciate they didn’t tie the loss of her superpower to her weight and she returned to somewhat healthy eating. But this is me asking for even more. If a drama might have dared shown someone less than model thin and happy, it might have been this one.

Apart from the whining and the idiotic loss of brain power when she was eating (not being able to put the food into the mouth, she was actually pretty smart from the start and saw through the scammers right away.

I also liked that Dong-hee was stylish from episode one. I loved seeing her colourful clothing (and I wanted a few for myself) especially since most if not all kdramas show fat/ plus sized characters wearing dowdy clothes

1

@linarrick She was wearing some great clothes while the camera lingered long on her head first in a bag of chips or mouth stuffed with chocolate.

I mean we can focus on only the positive of the rep, or the negative. For me, it was a mixed bag over the course of the show.

4

@indyfan I actually agree with your points, I did wish Dong-hee wasn’t model thin at the end, even if her superpower wasn’t tied to her weight and rather happiness, it still feels superficial. It’s why I liked those flashbacks as her as a child, she was happy and ate well. Obviously mama Bok contributed to her ED and later her fiancé, however I didn’t like how the drama portrayed ED at all. So yeah I agree with your criticisms, that in terms of representation it was a mixed bag. Honestly I’d love a kdrama with a plus-sized main character that didn’t focus on her weight or eating habits (as if being plus-sized is a personality trait), especially cause we rarely see that with thin characters *sigh*

2

@linnarick Well said.

And I also loved that flashback, and for a minute I had this wild hope, but no…

3

@linarrick Sorry. Didn’t tag you correctly above.

I love comedy and particularly one that refuses to take itself seriously. Thank you, fellow Beanies, for recommending DREAMING OF A FREAKING FAIRY TALE. I have not laughed this much since GAUS ELECTRONICS. This show just keeps a smile on my face.

Speaking of comedies, we have a nice new one in the form of MY SWEET MOBSTER. I was really looking forward to this one and so far it has not disappointed.

Thanks to more than one Beanie recommendation (again, thank you Beanies) I started watching EYE LOVE YOU. This is definitely one of the better Japanese rom-coms.

My wife has loved MISSING CROWN PRINCE.

My wife really liked the Chinese Costume drama WONDERLAND OF LOVE- it was very well done. After which she watched THE LAST IMMORTAL which kept her glued to the TV- a genuine binge watch in every sense. Then she started a new one entitled THE DOUBLE which she finds to be both good and a mess at the same time. When episodes for that show ran out she turned to LADY REVENGER RETURNS FROM THE FIRE. Her question: “Where do they get these titles?” She almost did not continue with this one- she found some elements of it to be kind of stupid but now the show is moving right along.

The parade of Chinese Costume dramas was abruptly interrupted by the arrival of the second half of the third season of BRIDGERTON. My wife definitely enjoyed Season 3.

The third chapter of our weekender BEAUTY AND MR. ROMANTIC is clicking right along. Pilseung’s birth secret has been revealed to the person who needed most to hear it. Our secondary couple no sooner got together than they ran into trouble with their families. Our female villain still cannot curb her temper and our male villain is still a scoundrel- but at least neither are tiresome. I wish I could say the same for our ML’s aunt- the show has that one fly in the ointment: It would be too much to expect a fifty episode show to be perfect so I just accept it- and remember to use the FF button when she appears. It subtracts nothing from the story to do so- she really adds nothing of value but the good news is that she does not take up that much airtime either. On the positive side of the ledger: The first actually positive use of the amnesia trope, which has given our FL a happier life and allowed her to discover her passion for acting. Unfortunately, the logic of drama demands that at some point her memories will return and a load of angst with it – and then the past will need to be addressed: It is a good thing that we still have 26 episodes to go because we are going to need them all to do justice to the stories which have developed this far.

This was a tough assignment- she has truly loved so many but here goes.

Chinese costume fantasies:

NIRVANA IN FIRE (and she adds NIRVANA IN FIRE 2.

The LEGEND OF FUYAO

LOVE BETWEEN FAIRY AND DEVIL

TILL THE END OF THE MOON

‘Historicals’ (no fantasy element):

THE STORY OF MINGLAN and from the same writer the fabulous LOVE LIKE A GALAXY.

WEAVING A TALE OF LOVE – there is a currently airing sequel WEAVING A TALE OF LOVE 2 for a reason- it is just that good.

JOY OF LIFE- and yes there is now a currently airing JOL 2 for the same reason as WEAVING A TALE OF LOVE. A JOL 3 is planned for next year.

NEW LIFE BEGINS which I also enjoyed: It is a gentle masterpiece. There is rumor of a second season coming.

Mystery costume dramas:

IMPERIAL CORONER

JUDGE DEE’S MYSTERY is a really unique drama based upon an actual statesman of the Tang Dynasty yet all but the first of the many Judge Dee novels were written in the West by Dutch, French and Chinese-American authors- and then recently adapted to the screen by the Chinese, making this drama a unique product of both the East and West. The same sort of East-West collaboration was behind the recently completed SHOGUN.

Comedy:

WRONG CARRIAGE, RIGHT GROOM- a story sorry good that it has been remade twice.

OK, that is more than ten (even not counting second seasons). As I said- this was a tough assignment. We just could not get it down to ten.

From that list I have already watched Love between Fairy and Devil (but for a xianxia, I largely prefer The legend of Shen Li), New Life Begins, Joy of Life 1 (currently watching season 2) and a third part of The story of Minglan (it's on hold until I finished Joy of Life 2).

I'll try to watch all these shows. I'm looking forward to starting some of them. Thank you again!

Same same. Now if he was talking sedimentary rocks I'd pay more attention.
Respect, eh?

2

Crash The plot of the past shouldn't have lasted so long because it's the most boring villains. I like the team and they deserve better investigations!

Dare to Love Me I don't really care about it. I watch it, it's fun and kinda forget after.

My Sweet Mobster Uhm Tae-Goo is really good in this role and looks handsome in his dark suits. I wished they chose an another actress, one he didn't already act with. I hope Prosecutor Kwon Yul will change his opinion about people who can't change and have another chance...

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon It's so good! The romance and the work setting. I wish they show more teaching by the characters.

Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale The characters are too childish.

Bridgerton 3> What a weird season. But there were good moments, Benedict and Eloise are the best duo for me. I'm just disapointed for the change in Francesca's story.

Regarding Francesca, I feel the same way. Although I love the way the show is telling--or potentially telling--queer stories, and I'm sure I'll end up liking Francesca's arc, Michael was my favorite ML in all of the books and I was very much looking forward to who they cast and how it played out on-screen. So I'm a little bummed he won't exist at all in this universe. Agree about Benedict and Eloise--they have the best dialogue.

I'm not against a queer couple (it's not like I was expecting veracity in this show) but not with this character.

Pretty much all the love stories have the same young woman living her first love, with no experience, marrying a man "higher" in rang.

Francesca's story was different. She was a widow, she already loved, had experience and Michael inherited his title later and was in love with her first. So for once, the dynamic was different of the rest of the stories. So I didn't understand why they chose this one when Eloise or Hyacinth could work better.

Bloody Luck Day. I was looking forward to this because of Lee Sung Min's performance in Reborn Rich but then I couldn't find it anywhere and forgot about it. I happened to come across it on Paramount+ and after watching Beyond Evil, I thought why not try this as a comparison. I don't even know how it compares because I kinda ended up feeling the same way about both: kinda underwhelmed and more curious about the missing parts. Both also featured good performances & both had back halves that made me go🤔🫤. I did like that it was short (only 10 episodes).

Crash. As always I've learned so much with this show and now that includes how seatbeat usage is actually recorded (or is this a work of fiction?). I would've never thought about that. Also, while watching a cast interview for BLOODY LUCKY DAY, they said in order for dramas to air/not be censored on tv seatbeats must be worn. Learning this tidbit makes the fact that a seatbeat was not being worn AND how it was used as evidence stand out even more.

High School of a Gangster. I am so enjoying this show. Deuk Pal is such a caring guy and I love how he's just genuinely trying help all these young boys (which sometimes involves having to smack them up). I've said it before and I'll say it again: this show is surprisingly wholesome for a show that features violence and gangsters. The thing is Deuk Pal is the heart of the show so I feel like when he leaves to let Yi Yeon live, it's gonna feel kinda unsatisfying. Maybe I'll be wrong. After next week, I'll have nothing to watch on Wednesdays.

High Society. I didn't watch much of this but it just reinforced for me that I'm not into melodrama haha. Oh, just so much was so... baffling and frustrating. A lead who is like "I'm independent! Hear me roar!" As she plans on using her family's resources. A guy who is painted a backstabber and betrayer for using chaebols for upward mobility and financial security meanwhile the parents are trying to marry their kids to each other to maintain their social status and financial security. The elements I liked was the second lead couple and how they were just constantly acknowledging tropes and reality and even having actual communication. So I just watched their clips on youtube haha.

Midnight Romance in Hagwon (through Ep. 9): Will be putting in some hagwon-style hours this weekend to catch up! I love Chung-mi so much. She's my favorite type of SFL -- the kind who has her own story and isn't there to serve as anyone's thinly characterized foil for the sake of a love triangle. I am feeling anxious waiting for more angst to drop for Hye-jin and Jun-ho, especially as they don't seem very skilled at being covert with their relationship.

Dare to Love Me (through Ep. 10): It has a cute OTP and airs on Monday-Tuesday. 'Nuff said.

Beauty and Mr. Romantic (through Ep. 22): What a relief that Pil-seung has learned his lesson and is standing up to his family in order to support Dora. HIs grandma is just awful. She might have as good a chance as Jin-dan at being unredeemable, even with 50 episodes.

Missing Crown Prince (through Ep. 18): The dowager's expression as she spied on the OTP's secret rendezvous reinforced that she's not a one-dimensional antagonist. A love with a body count as high as hers isn't likely to end well, though. Hopefully history doesn't repeat with the younger generation.

The Player 2 (through Ep. 4): It's not deep, but it's fun. The drama equivalent of a summer action flick.

Crash (through Ep. 4): Gave it a try thanks to the positive Beanie reviews. The team has an entertaining mix of characters and I like how they're opening up to the newbie. I'm realizing procedurals can make for a relatively stress-free watch.

Also, restarted Joy of Life 2 and felt the show's magic return after the second episode. Will now have to pace myself or risk falling behind with everything. And in non-drama watching, I spent more than four hours absorbed by a riveting YouTube video on the failure of Disney's Star Wars-themed hotel. The creator, Jenny Nicholson, had some great insights about the relationship between profit-driven companies and fandom that apply to the entertainment industry as a whole. Is the system sustainable long-term when corporations maximize profits to appease shareholders/investors but offer their most loyal supporters less and less in return, so that fans literally pay a price for their loyalty and feel progressively worse about it?

Having just jotted down several dramas from Old Lawyer & Wife's recommends, I plan to see if they are on her lists as well (there are three: A, B, and Dropped).

1

Crash (9-10): Great episodes this week, with lots of great action as well, and I love how the show involves all of our characters into the action, and nobody gets left out. Great teamwork!

Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale (5-6): This stupid and ridiculous show got even more stupid and ridiculous this week, but it's still an absolute blast to watch, even if some of the jokes are questionable at best. The Taxi Driver cameo was hilarious. 50 bonus points for establishing consent before the first kiss, because that made the whole thing 20 times better.

Midnight Romance in Hagwon (9-10): I'm expecting lots of drama ahead, but I'm counting on our second couple to deliver the fun.

Player (8-14): Really enjoyed this, but the finale was pretty disappointing, with an absolutely infuriating act of noble idiocy. Like, they leave Ah-ryung behind, when she explicitly says she was fine with going to jail. Even worse is when it gets spinned in a "live the life you want" way, but she literally told them how she wanted to live 30 seconds before they abandoned her. Was nobody listening?

Player 2 (1-4): Had a feeling as to what was coming, but her death still broke my heart. It's kinda frustrating how the show quickly and seemingly moves on from that though, but luckily future scenes lessened that frustration. The epilogue from episode 4 is a highlight to that, even if I still have no idea where Ah-ryung's sister came from (I really like her though). Other than that, the show is still as fun and ridiculous as ever.

My Perfect Stranger (1-2): Has been on my list for a while, so I'm finally watching this. So far so good, even if I liked episode 2 a lot more than episode 1. Already like the FL and her young parents, though I do really wonder how her dad went from breaking heads to being an absent and drunk father/ husband.

In this year of mostly cookie cutter k-dramas, TAF really stands out. To say nothing of the crazy good soundtrack. I loved it from start to finish. 🦸🏻🧡

WATCHING
Missing Crown Prince eps 17-18
I'm hoping this underdog sageuk stays consistent and wraps up well this weekend. Maybe I'll post some final final thoughts.

Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale
Oh my gawd this is so amusing 👸🏻🤴🏻😂

The Double c-drama eps 6-14
This fantasy historical romance makjang is seriously addictive. It's got a magical combination of highly entertaining story with appealing OTP, gorgeous costumes, and beautiful music. It may be walking a fine line between fun and ridiculous but I'm loving every minute of it. 😜 Youku's Youtube channel is parsing it out one episode a day and it's nearly killing me, but I'm still a week ahead of Viki's release schedule, which is also inexplicably like molasses.

Fake It Til You Make It c-drama
If you heard raves last year about this short (for a c-drama) modern romance, I can confirm they were valid. I'm loving it. This is a story about the many ways people consciously and unconsciously end up "faking" it (whatever "it" is in their lives). The 30-something lead actors' chemistry is sizzling 🔥

Have a fun week beanies!

COMPLETED:

A Shop for Killers - This drama was consistently absorbing from start to finish—a solid premise executed with skill and imagination. Along with When My Love Blooms, the show was a textbook example of how to intercut flashbacks with present day, slowly revealing pieces of the puzzle until a complete picture emerges. (This narrative style isn’t for everybody; much of the negative criticism I read came from people who found the flashbacks and repeated scenes confusing and/or boring.)

I’ve never particularly liked Lee Dong-Wook, but I was pleasantly surprised by his strong performance here. I thought Kim Hye-Jun was perfectly adequate as the FL, though I think there are other actresses out there who could have brought more punch 🤣 to the role. Park Ji-Bin seemed to be playing the same psycho-in-nerd’s-clothing character as the one he played in Blind. He does it well.

From the way the show ended, it would seem a season 2 is in the works. 🙏🏻 There’s so much I want to know about Jin-Man’s backstory!

Doctor Lawyer - You know a drama's in trouble when you find So Ji-Sub boring. This was a flat, paint-by-numbers, entirely predictable show, where the writer’s and director’s imaginations limited to a dull gray. The weak story, based on a cockamamie premise, had no clear dramatic arc. Potentially interesting characters and relationships were left largely unexplored. (Shin Sung-Rok’s demonic smile added a little bit of color, until I realized that was pretty much his only expression.) There were so many head-scratching moments, I won’t even attempt to list them.

BTW - So Ji-Sub would have been truly awesome in the lead role of A Shop for Killers…don’t you agree?

DROPPED: -

Lost Happiness (Taiwan) - Super-cheesy. Dropped about midway through episode 1. I wanted to strangle the FL about 20 seconds after she first opened her mouth.

Hi, beanies! I hope you are having a good weekend.

What I am watching:

_ Sweet Mobster (2/16). As I said in the recap, the first episode left me cold, but the second one was better and the characters started to be more interesting, so I'll watch episodes 3 and 4.

_ My Ahjusshi (11 out of 16). I can't say I love these characters, but I'm enjoying the experience. This is a very special drama. The OST is wonderful.

_ I watched two Drama Specials in Kocowa.

2021. Do you know Ashtanga?, starred by Joo Jong Hyuk (SML in Frankly Speaking) and Bae Yoon Kyung (SFL in Wedding Impossible). I liked watching them together, but the plot is too simple. This could have been a good short drama (around 8 episodes).

2023. Dog days of Summer. One of my favorite Drama Specials so far. This is a cute movie starred by uri Moon Woo-Jin (Castaway Diva, Atypical Family). A story about a teenager who has to move temporarily from Seoul to Daegu in the summer of 2002. Highly recommended if you like slice-of-life kind of shows.

_ C-drama Joy of Life 2 (5 out of 36). So far so good. It's simply great spending time with these fabulous characters.

What I finished:

_ Atypical Family. This is my favorite k-drama released in this first half of 2024.

Bitter Sweet Hell Episode 3 - I can see the alliance between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law forming. There are some rough patch to be taken though. MIL already knows what sort of men she has in her family. I'm guessing what's remaining is for the wool to fall off her DIL's eyes.

Uncle Samsik - I wasn't able to get to this one this week.

Player 2 - The likelihood of dropping this is high. I'm yet to watch episodes 3&4 but while 1&2 was quite a ride, I don't think it will be enough to make me stay.

Missing Crown Prince - I skipped episodes 7-9 and mindlessly clicked play on episode 10. I learnt two things - Choi Sang-rok was shot and, the King might likely meet his end in Choi's hand. QD taking charge of the royal court once again had me cheering. I know she's a baddie but I'm glad that a woman of the Internal Court in this drama rose up to the occasion. I am of the opinion that some dramas that occured in Korean history would have been averted if the women of the Internal Court took the reins at the demise or absence of their husbands. All those coups could have been prevented if one of them rose up.

Connection Episode 3-6 - I'm not a fan of any of the main characters and supporting, save for the Jae-gyung's Unit Chief.

But the competence of the leads in pursuing the story has me on my seat through each watch.

A marvelous week of drama watching!

MY SWEET MOBSTER was my happy watch of the week. This is basically a scrambled BALL OF FIRE (classic, 1941) wherein the fabulous Uhm Tae-goo mobster boss is gangster moll Sugarpuss O'Shea/Barbara Stanwyck and Han Sunhwa is the hilarious innocent Prof. Bertram Potts/Gary Cooper. Throw in the terrific crew of reformed mobsters and the handsome, intense prosecutor Kwon Yul, and you've got a gold-standard screwball comedy. Anytime drama land wants to gift me a laugh-riot screwball comedy, I'm in!

After 27 episodes of c-drama NIRVANA IN FIRE, I had to step away and think about what I was seeing. This is maybe more than a drama series. It's maybe a masterpiece. Following my own rule, it has hold up for at least a decade before I can put it in that rarefied category. I'm so grateful to Alluvial_Fan for helping me enter this dense world so full of heart, it's almost unbearable.

And another grateful thanks to Old Lawyer and Mrs. Old Lawyer, I haven't forgotten your treasured list of 5 great c-dramas! I'm half-way through THE STORY OF MINGLAN. It's wonderful. I love this wise grandmother, this troubled granddaughter, this flawed and reckless hero, all of it. Thank you!

Nirvana in Fire (2015) IS a masterpiece. Nothing comes close to it. If I may suggest, find Chinese drama Sound of Desert (2014). You might like it. Nirvana’s ML, Hu Ge, plays pretty similar role there.

I'm now on summer reset, wherein I throw in the towel on staying current with flavor-of-the-week dramas. I'll come back to those when the weather isn't fine. I thought that the comparison to BALL OF FIRE was very apt- this would make the former felons at our ML's company the stand ins for the older professors that Gary Cooper's character lives with.

100% right. The only drawback so far ... no gangster boss Dana Andrews (at least, so far). There's so many wunnerful scenes to reinterpret, what a goldmine for this k-dramas screenwriters.

Is Ball of Fire the one where Gary Cooper is compiling a slang dictionary?

1

Alluvial_Fan,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_of_Fire

The "seven dwarf" profs are compiling an encyclopedia of human knowledge. Sugarpuss O'Shea is their gateway into slang. She's both a gangster moll and a nightclub singer. Gary Cooper plays against type here, as the genius naif Prof. Potts. Honestly, this clever movie is still so fresh, it just tickles me to think about it.

3

This is where I put in a plug for watching BALL OF FIRE. Alluvial Fan and Clio's Servant have obviously seen it. Anyone who has not is seriously missing out. It is one of the great classic screwball comedies.

1

To add a plug for another great Barbara Stanwyck screwball comedy, watch The Lady Eve. This time it's Henry Fonda playing the naif against her swindler.

b>Starting:
Zombie Detective: Really sweet, or at least the zombie attempting to live inconspicuously was hilarious and touching at the same time, and I think the FL is maybe the *only one* I can like with aegyo. Or maybe her and Bong Soon – I loved the mixture of brutality and aegyo that was a main feature of hers.
Soundtrack #1: Lovely mini-series, with a impeccable representation of a kind of relationship that is often seen in creative professions, and which made me so angry I had smoke coming out of my ears.
This was definitely not lessened by the documentary described under “Not a K-drama”. If I didn’t recognize what happened by myself, I certainly had it confirmed by that documentary. I will be giffing profusely about it in the week to come.
Finished:
Atypical Family: First and foremost my hope for Grace and Dong-hee came true, even if the writers just had to spoil it afterwards. Or half spoil it – it was obvious where the chemistry was and stayed.
As for the main couple, I was super disappointed with how the dilemma was solved, it could have been so much more fun and with not time skip. I had excellent ideas for it.
Could be worse, though. No corpse. I will not let my ideas about how much better it could have been spoil a whole show that I actually loved for me.
Links for Gifs will appear in the comment section when the DB staff has seen and approved of them.
Not a K-drama:
Sexisme I Musikbranchen (Sexism in the Music Industry): A Danish documentary about the habitual condescending treatment of women and the extra thick glass ceiling of a business that often believes itself to be neutral and just hire “the best”. Oh, and the harassment … so much harassment.
Inside Out 2: Didn’t cry buckets like with the first one, but did need to hug a certain person afterwards, who laughingly said: But it was only like, 24 hours in that movie, not five years!

TWINKLING WATERMELON: Finished. Sweet story, engaging young cast.

WORLD OF THE MARRIED Thanks to the DB’s post about good first episodes, I started this. First episodes are a hurdle for me, so that was a great post that I’ve bookmarked. This is just my kind of show so far (episode 5). The actress (Kim Hee-Ae) is incredible, as she was in SECRET LOVE AFFAIR.

EXTREMELY INAPPROPRIATE (Japan): I was told that it was extremely popular in Japan, so I thought I would give it a try. Extremely confused. I really don’t know what to say. I will continue to watch this, but it sure is weird.

Atypical Family: Bought the instrumental - Journey through time- on apple music. Woohoo! Overall, I was satisfied enough with the ending even though originally I was like "that's it?". I think the finale week could have used an extra half hour to flesh things out. I'm so glad I picked it up. It has been such a lovely journey with beautiful music.

Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale: Caught all aired episodes this week. It has such a fun, purposeful absurdity, and it reminds me of Gaus Electronics. There is humor and twists at almost every corner! And the show also knows to bring the flashes of emotion so it's not just characters doing wacky things. I also love the
chemistry between the leads. And that party kiss was exhilarating.

Joy of Life 2 Up to episode 31. Only 6 more episodes before the long wait for season 3. The emperor's maneuvering is truly incredible and fearsome. The guy can't bother to tidy his robe, but he's playing a meticulous game of 4D chess with all the characters.

Current/recent:
The Atypical Family: Best drama of the year so far for me. Quirky, unpredictable, hilarious, sometimes frustrating, with terrific sly performances especially by the women. Was the ending real? Or an illusion? Works either way.
Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale: I expected the show to throw in a little genuine sentiment and a light moral or two, but fortunately it got those out of the way quickly and returned to the self-aware absurdity that it does so well. The umbrella is really coming into its own.
High School Return of a Gangster: This is a surprisingly good mix of comedy, action, and HS rebellion, and the two younger MLs are doing an outstanding job. Can’t wait to see them fall in love.
My Lovely Mobster: Very mixed start. The ML is well-established as a character already (his voice does a LOT of the work) and we even know more about the 2ML after his few minutes of screen time than we do about the FL, who is a bright, bubbly blank. The turn from farce to sentimentality at the end of episode 2 doesn’t bode well. Not sure I’ll continue.

Older shows:
Crazy Love (2022): Crazy fun for 13 episodes or so. Then not as crazy, and not as fun. It was an enjoyable ride that petered out about 90 minutes before the end.
Mission: Possible (2021 movie): How can something with such a high body count be such a silly, sweet, ridiculous romp? And ToD was OUTSTANDING in this - truly a bravura performance.

Happy Saturday and Dragon Boat Festival, Beanies!

THE DEBATE CLUB DOUBLE: Continues to be THE outrageous makjang, for better or worse. Not more xianxia tho))) Instead show went even harder on visual storytelling and barely-subtle erotic metaphors – fooling around in rose buds bath AND shirtless rain swordplay, really, show? Well, whatever helps you deliver the message loud and clear without triggering censors. As long as there's no kissing parrots or soaring phoenixes once we'll get to the wedding night...

Theme-wise drama is still more of a spectacle than anything deep. Those big words about justice and whatnot in court were great, but not delivered in a serious enough fashion. The only wisdom that properly sticks the landing is “choose carefully who you trust, esp in important matters like love/marriage”, with all the possible scenarios of that going horribly wrong played out in front of our eyes. And it's not limited to feminine rage only - dudes also get scorned repeatedly here, starting with ex-hubby, who now looks fully ready to not only commit regicide to Princess Crazy, but also burn his whole household with mom and sister locked inside, not that anyone would miss them...

But the best thing is generous use of sophistry – this is almost as guilty pleasure good as harem dramas at verbal stabs and smoothly talking one's opponent into hanging themselves. FL's identity trial was a riot, pls debate more, it was really fun!

I am not live watching as nothing has pulled me in. Although I am contemplating watching a live music performance by PHS and KDJ which requires me to wake up at 3am of a work day versus just praying that some fans record and post adequate clips.

As for dramas.
Kdrama: Lovely Runner 1/16. Slow start and not fully engaging yet after episode 1 took almost 2 weeks to watch. Will give it a few more episodes.

Soundtrack #1 rewatch. This community watch has been lively and fun! One beanie asked how realistic it is for friends to become lovers especially if 1 has been burning the candle and the other has been unaware for there to be true hot passion. Maybe the larger community of DB has had experience?

Cdrama: Completed Blossoms in Adversity and would recommend it for anyone who needs a feel good drama. Although I had hoped that the ML killed the king since I felt that the king targeted the couple and create all kinds of problems. However the story found a way to stay true to the ML’s filial love for the king.

Joy of Life 24/36. It has picked up and I will be sad when I get to the end of this season. You would think a wedding is a good thing unless the future MIL has a sweatshop trying to provide the dowry and flowers and plans to kill off all their workers.

Dearest Gentle Reader,
Happy Saturday!
I had the pleasure of watching all 8 episodes of Netflix Bridgerton Season 3 this week.
This series is based on 8 novels released from 2000-2006. The makers of the drama have updated both the look and story of the books to reflect views of today.
I happily devoured the first Season and then the books and then the second season.
And then I discovered K-dramas!!!
And I realized-
1. I love Korean Men Actors
2. I now can easily find dramas that have depth, interesting story, beautiful music and so much more than what can be found in regular streaming programming and I don't have to wait years for the next season.
3. A glance, a touch, and a kiss can bring more heart flutters for me than any amount of intimate situations that are shown. Thank you k-dramas for leaving something to the imagination and focusing on the emotional side.

My question for dear reader is do you like the shows? Or do you like the books?

I have not read the Bridgerton books but I have watched Season 1, Season 2 and Queen Charlotte spin-
off. And I didn't like them, being the first season the one I liked the least.
I can't really connect with the characters and I dislike the sex scenes (used and abused).
So I still don't know if I'll watch the third season.

As you say, k-dramas are so different... I wish I had discovered them earlier, instead of watching so many western shows which rarely pleased me.

About The Best Hit, I'm so fond of that drama... It's so light and funny. I think The Best Hit made me discover Dramabeans two years ago, when I read all the recaps and all the comments that beanies had written five years before ☺️
Btw, I don't know where you are watching it, but Viki changed the background music in a very meaningful scene in the episode 24 (if I'm not mistaken). The music in that scene is important (if you know where it comes from). So if you want to watch it as it originally was (and as I watched it), here's the Youtube link. Of course, it's a big spoiler so don't watch it until you get there.

Thank you so much for this link. Beanies are the best. How interesting that you came here from this show. I am watching on Viki. I would have never thought that they would change the music. How odd. I’m only on episode 11 so I will save this. I was not real happy that it was so many short episodes, but now I’m thrilled because it means more show.
Your experience with Bridgerton is interesting also. I’m not a fan of friends to lovers troupe so this story has never been my favorite. As I said, now that I have kdramas I don’t need this show anymore. And there were a lot of sex scenes just a warning

Viki changes the background music in some dramas for copyright reasons. I found it out when I was watching Shopping King Louis, which was one of the first dramas I watched on Viki.
That drama has several Western songs in the background, but I couldn't listen to them because Viki changed them for another music. I knew which songs I was missing thanks to the subtitles (for instance, A whole new world from Aladdin). It was a weird experience. I felt I had been robbed 😂

That's really annoying, and I didn't realize the scene from The Best Hit was changed - thanks for sending the link to the original! Netflix did that with Reply 1988 and also blurred out pretty much every logo, title, poster, etc. in the show. It was bizarre and highly annoying and meant a lot of the pop culture references literally disappeared (also I'm not sure why they needed to blur things like a Pizza Hut logo).

4

On a related note, I remember shows like Coffee Prince and White Christmas using lots of Western background music when I watched them years ago - I wonder if that's all gone now on most streaming sites.

3

@wonhwa

Those changes of music and all the blurring you said... It's really annoying. In Shining Inheritance a full scene in a karaoke was cut on Viki and other sites! A full scene. Missing.

I'm glad now you have watched the sequence in The Best Hit, because it's a shame to miss it the way it originally had been thought, and how it aired.

3

I agree 100% about your comparison of Bridgerton and KDramas. Watched all three seasons and had aboslutely no feels about them. My opiniion of course, but I found the emotion heavy-handed and often cringey...especially the sex scenes...wich were quite over choreographed ...like they were ball room dances. Even the music they played at the balls were a bit smirky & self-referential...making sure that the subtitles let us in on their "cool" adaptations from modern music (i.e. Madonna) re-tuned to that historical period. It yelled 'look-at-me', which seemed to be the point of 'Shondaland's' retelling of the popular books. Everything was morphed into modern day thinking, yet somehow much of the nuance in the retelling for me was strangled by a 'kitchen sink' full of side characters, issues and hyberbolic 'skinship'. Stepping off my soapbox now lol...

It's been a few years since I read one or two of the books, but I didn't particularly like them. It irritated me too much how incorrectly the customs and traditions of the time were portrayed, far too modern.
However, as the series are set in a kind of parallel universe and deliberately play with modern elements, I at least liked seasons 1 and 2. Season 3 was quite a disappointment, and it certainly didn't help that it was split into two parts.
I have no interest in sex scenes unless they involve the main couple. Cressida's clothes were just awful. I was disappointed how quickly she was dumped by Eloise.
Too few scenes with Penelope and Colin, things happen too quickly and suddenly for me. At first I thought it was because I'm now too used to how much time many kDramas take, but other viewers who don't watch kDramas seem to have the same problem.

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon: 9-10. So much has...no but despite being slow I watch it every week.
Dare to Love Me: Still at episode 5. It's great that FL and MLs sister became friends. Lol at the jealousy when FL didn't know. Just realised this has another character named Lee Joon Ho making it two dramas with characters of same name.
Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale: Episode 3-4. I'll be watching it but won't be saying anything about it since I have already started it I am seeing it through (reasons don't include I hate it or the characters just something I don't think people would care about).

My sweet Mobster: The actor's voice is such that I struggle to hear it. It's funny in a silly way but in a way, I don't mind and I am looking forward to it. The whole idea of a reformed gangster who recruits and reforms others sounds good. And I like the FL too.

Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale ep3-4 Cha Min is just as Dan Ah described "like a little boy with his first love". He is endearingly weird and harsh to Jae Rim by saying things he does not really mean. But we all know that he is already into her but he is fighting the attraction. While Jae Rim has set her mind to be the Cinderella in her own story while misunderstanding her psychotic boss's actions.

The Double ep8-14 I really like the FL, she is restoring the honor and name of her "double" and also investigating the reasons for her ex-husband and his family's horrible acts against her. I like that she is intelligenr, talented and brave. We also find out more about our ML's background. If this continues ro be good, I may just watch all the remaining episodes jist to see how Jiang Li dole out hee revenge and how Xiao Heng will help her.

Connection ep 5-6 Ji Sung is amazing in this role. He is believable as this conflicted character going through hell to capture the person behind his current ordeal and also solving the various cases related to it. He can't trust everyone around him. But at least he has his high school club friends on his side.

Crash ep 9-10 the truth behing that accident all those years ago is being brought to light by an unexpected person. I suspected someone else due to the profile of the culprit. But I was pleasantly surprised at the reveal. Also I like that the bad guys has no remorse so it will be more satisfying to take them down one by one.

Life on Mars ep7 what resonated for me most in this episode is how the law is different for the rich and poor. A person who embezzled billions get seven years while the one that stole 5 million won gets 17 years. How is that fair?! The rich person who stole billions should get more years in jail.

My Sweet Mobster ep1-2 I see traces of the meet cute of romcom of yesteryears but with a twist. I like that our leads are not perfect but they have very redeeming qualities. I especially like Ji Hwan and his minions who are working hard to be peoductive members of society. Boo to everyone who is belittling and antagonizing them

Uncle Samshik ep8-9 still on pause. I zone out whenever I try to start this. I will pick this up later on.

Life on Mars Ep. 7 is honestly one of my most favourite episodes of any drama ever. The fact that it was based on a true event made it all the more real. But even otherwise, the way the episode built tension throughout the hostage situation, with the ticking clock in the background was excellent. And it still retained its humour!

I agree with what you said about the episode. The hostage situation started normally then you discover their stories. They did retain the humor, Tae Joo, Dong Chul and crew provided the comedy tastefully given the hostage situation.

THE DOUBLE: I'm loving the direction, the screenwriting, the vivid splashes of color on otherwise modest attire. The whole drama feels so alive and I'm eagerly awaiting each episode!

Garden news: My first home-grown cucumber. I'm so happy! It's like watching my children grow.🥹

Ongoing: Catching up on, in order of preference, Midnight Romance in Hagwon, Connection, and Frankly Speaking. Eagerly watching, as soon as the episodes are released, are my silly-sweet rom-coms Freaking Cinderella and My Sweet Mobster. It's such fun to see these definitely-not-flower-boys grown men so smitten, hallucinations and all. And they make me laugh.

Missing already: Lovely Runner and Atypical Family, and their protagonists who reach through time and space to protect their beloved other. And the families, birth or not, that give strength and hope to them. And Claudia Kim, who is tall, strong, and gorgeous, and would be absolutely believable in a sageuk disguised as a man.

Retro: Slowly working my way through the C-drama Wonderland of Love. I get through the many boring bits by admiring the costumes and sets. There's always something to look at.

Looking forward to: Miss Night and Day. Another silly rom-com for me! Yay!

We are approaching the end of Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun and I have fun predicting bits of the scenario. I'm quite sure that Saya will come back from the grave.

I finished Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area and liked the action.
So I just started D Day for the momentum. I'm very happy to recognise Banpo brige and later its fountain show.

My friend really appreciated the atypical story of The atypical family. She started Knight flower to wait for Dare to love me and Frankly speaking next episodes.

Still 2ep to go.
We watched it just after Arthal chronicles, and it took me a few eps to adjust to the actors change though Lee Joon Gi is better for the commander.
We are now at the battle in the forest, and the geography does not stand.
I love the reversals of situations, you can never be sure who will win at the end of the ep. It's a pity that the twins were used too little.

The Atypical Family
I know that many were not satisfied with the ending but for me it was perfect. As I was more interested in saving cycle which was well done. Lot of shows usually either mess up this part/drag it. I also liked the shows theme that everyone deserves a second chance.

Currently Watching
Players
Enjoying all the hijinks here and that last meeting with the President reminded me of K2. I miss it. Have to rewatch that gem.

Crash
They are close to finish line and I'm glad that the characters got to showoff/pull those stunts. Enjoyed the action scenes.

Dream of a Freaking Fairy Tale
This was supposed to be funny I don't know what happened here. I guess I'll finish it as its a short series.

My Sweet Mobster
The VOICE😍 it had the same effect when I found that CEW had a deeper voice - real (golden/lovely) compared to his idol one. I was here for the drama title and suits (like men in suits and gangster troupes) but I'll stick around for the cute stuff and the deep voice.

Healer (2014): I'd never seen this one before but always heard good things about it. I managed the first 6 episodes I think, then fast forwarded the rest, it just somehow couldn't hold my attention (despite resident hottie JCW!) -even though I don't think it to be a bad drama. Just didn't vibe.

Because This Is My First Life (2017): 13/16 Now this is a beautifully made character driven drama (with a cat in the cast yay!) I can feel how much soul went into the writing, it's just so so lovely. Ji-ho's talk with her mother in epsiode 6 has to be my favourite k-drama mother-daughter scene of all time. I'm telling you, I never cried this much over a k-drama. Just wow.

I think people hype HEALER for its romance part, but technically it was supposed to be much more... yet just wasn't. Weak both in substance and execution angst/conflict, average action (OK, I admit, I have extra high standard for it, sorry), characters lacked realism, leads performances outside of their great chemistry together could've been better etc... Most of all, it felt very polished and sugarcoated with no real sense of depth or high stakes. Everything was a mere background for OTP having their moments - like a dollhouse Bond movie, only Bond movies were never dishonest about what they are. Ajumma is love tho^^ How many rotten veggies do you think I'll get for insulting DB's most beloved show?)))

2

Yes that's exactly what I have felt. His smolders can explode dynamite but then rest of the time it feels disconnected.

4

@minniegupta1 @gikata Again, exactly how I feel about JCW.

3

Let's give credit where credit is due:

JCW is very good at kissing scenes. VERY GOOD. Heehee!

He was my first K-Drama bias but quickly got replaced by Namgoong Min and then Park Hyung-Shik and Jang Dong-Yoon.

Jang Dong-Yoon is now at the front of my personal K-Drama Oppa Bias Pack. He is handsome AF and has the level of thespian talent to match with regards to his versatility (he INHABITS his roles - more like a character actor who happens to be conventionally handsome than a movie star who is himself no matter who he plays, if that makes any sense).

4

@9TailedVixen 😂😂😂

In Suspicious Partner, there is this one scene where he grabs her hand and asks her to sit next to him and the scene sizzled. This was of course quite late into the episodes and I went..hmmnnn...Oppa, how come I didn't see you earlier? My local K restaurant halemoni is not happy I don't see what she sees in JCW 😂😂

3

@minniegupta1 I also think he was at his hottest in SUSPICIOUS PARTNER (and best at acting in EMPRESS KI, which I never finished, because two other leads bored me to coma with their dumbass love story and horrendous performances). I like another scene - where FL watches him disrespectfully with a very valid appreciation and he gives her this smug, knowing look over his glasses that were half off at the time... Indeed. Made me feel quite regretful the whole show wasn't about just two of them flirting in his office while he struts around all fine in those suits and specs)))

@9tailedvixen that I'm not gonna argue with, but my impression of acting craft was always a little bit broader than that, unfortunately...

JDY is love, even tho I didn't vibe with any of his latest dramas. And he can ALSO kiss^^

0

@gikata Oh yes, Oppa Dong-Yoon can kiss indeed.

Toe-curling, stomach-butterflying on-screen kisses. Cr*p... I'm blushing now. Heehee!

And yes, the acting craft is much wider than "great on-screen kisser" which is why even though both JCW and JDY are great on-screen kissers, Oppa Dong-Yoon is my bias now.

1

I have not watched Healer yet. Two years ago I started it but I only watched two episodes. I assume it gets much better later*.

That 2024 tally is what drove me to past years lists to search for obscure or disliked dranas, and eventually to Please Don't Date Him.

I was shocked to see that my top favorites barely start past number 75 on that list, and it reminded me that in the old days I used to like shows that nobody liked or watched! 😄😄

4

@midnight

I see your point 😅

But I think that if a show is at least in one list, it doesn't mean it's a forgotten or disliked drama. Many people (as myself) struggle to think of only ten shows. I wonder how different the results would be if we could make our Top 20.

2

You're right, but I don't even like most of those 70+ shows! That's a me problem of course, but still startling 😅

2

@minniegupta1 share the wine then - when I'm drunk it's other people who should be scared for their life, sanity and virtue^^

1

I think all will agree you don't need wine for that @gikata 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

1

It's funny if people really hype Healer for the romance cause that didn't appeal to me at all haha. I was way more interested in the action, undercover aspect followed by Healer's dynamics with everyone else and the comedy.

I didn't *mind* his relationship with the reporter but it wasn't the draw for me and even with the end, I was still more curious about the night courier stuff (did Healer seriously give it up or maybe he became like a mentor. Did he really have no more interactions with Hacker Ajumma?). Even now, I would be interested to know about a new generation of night couriers

Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale (6/10) - Reminds me of the pre-2015 romcoms. Very silly, very tropey. I'm loving it!

My Sweet Mobster (2/16) - Another one with the vintage Kdrama vibe. And I'm not complaining! The whole world is doing edgy and angsty. At least kdramas should give us soft, heart-fluttering romance.

Lovely Runner (2/16) - Gave in to the hype and started watching this. Not crazy about it as yet but Byeon Woo-Seok looks good enough to eat, so I am going to continue watching.

Wandee Goodday (6/12) - This Thai BL is as cute as it is sexy. The MLs are gorgeous, and the heart eyes they have for each other is exactly what the doctor ordered after a tiring week at work!

Love Sea (1/10) - Fort and Peat are back 2 years after Love In The Air, and their chemistry is even better this time. The seaside locales of Thailand have been beautifully captured, and with the beauty of the leads added, this BL is pure eye candy!

Chief Detective 1958 (5/10) - Enjoyed the first few episodes of the show, but lost interest after Episode 5 where they killed off not one but two nice characters. I guess this goes into the dropped pile now.

The Atypical Family (completed): While I'm happy for Nu-ri for meeting his dad after five years, I don't know him (I don't even know when Gwi-ju and Da-hae conceived a baby). The child I know and love is Yi-na, and I get that they couldn't age up Park So-yi to an 18-year-old, but that's the father-daughter reunion that I wanted to see. I loved this drama, but I think a big part of whether you love it or not is whether you can forgive our con artist family. I've always loved Uncle -- the big teddy bear that he is -- and despite the fact that he followed Yi-na, his tailing turned out to be helpful when she went missing. Grace did push Dong-hee off the stairs, but she genuinely cares for Dong-hee and didn't want to see her get hurt by her scumbag fiancé once the two women became friends. Dong-hee is my second favorite character of the year, and Claudia Kim (Soo-hyun) is my girl crush of the year. I fangirled when she flew to pull down the fire curtain onstage. I loved Dong-hee and Gwi-ju's sibling relationship and cried when she yelled at her mom, "Was ruining my life not enough? Your dream is killing Gwi-ju!"

Frankly Speaking (completed): It's hard to explain, but I quite enjoyed this drama. Yes, it wasn't the show that it was advertised to be, but I cared about all our characters, so I was just happy to spend my week with them. I loved how our leads were genuinely nice people. I cried when Poong-baek told Mom, "I saved the last episode to watch with you." Ki-baek and Woo-joo's romance was very sweet, and I loved how they've seen each other at their lowest, including pooping in his pants. I'm happy that Ki-baek and Jung-heon rekindled their friendship. Woo-joo's writing team was the best, especially how Show redeemed Ha-young who became such a supporter to Woo-joo unni. I'm so happy Ji-hoo hyung hit big with his mukbang.

Connection (thru Ep.4): I really like detective Chang-soo. Of course he'd be suspicious of Jae-kyung. Where was he when he went MIA for three days? What did he text to the number that he asked him to track? Why did he take off from the burning house? Besides the hospital and police station CCTV, I hope Chang-soo saw the subway station CCTV with an unconscious Jae-kyung. I really like Joo-song, who's comic relief, and can't wait until our three Audiophile friends work together. I really like drug dealer Jin-wook and hope CEO Yoon doesn't kill him.

WATCHING BEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING

Dreaming of A Freaking Cinderella or Something Like That This ridiculous and silly drama has heart under the umbrella and is funny and entertaining. Watching Lee Jun Young (Impossible Heir) and Pyo Ye Jin (Moon In the Day) be so funny, silly and free after their last dreary shows has been healing in this year of so much drama drudgery. The umbrella’s role is oddly compelling—for once, no direct metaphors with the umbrella, just an increasing reassuring friendly sidekick with personality. It’s a true testiment that the umbrella doesn’t remind me at all of Lovely Runner—it made its own path to follow of faithfulness and whimsy.

My Sweet Mobster Another over-the-top with literal bubble scenes comedy that soju bottle slapped me into showing me what I need right now. It works—the clothes, the voice, the puns, and the hair. And how nice is it to have two shows right now with FL candy types (but with some grit) who have decent hair? (It’s a pet peeve when show’s have FLs have hair that it would take work to make that ugly instead letting it be plain to signal their place in life and society.) Ji Hwan’s mobster on the outside, goodfellow on the inside works so well—that whole scene in the hospital from the popping of the Eun Ha bubbles to hiding her in the hospital bed made me happy that there are people out there making fun entertainment with heart.

COMPLETED
Atypical Family For a show I really had a problem with at the beginning because of the neglect of a child, I oddly ended up watching to the end. The show was flawed but something made me watch—maybe that was its superpower. Ina was great—her superpower were in her eyes—not so much her ability to read people’s minds but more her ability to convey emotions through her eyes. Probably not a rewatch, but the fact I completed this drama is a feat in itself.

GAVE UP ON
MIDNIGHT ROMANCE IN HAGWON So much darkness, too much work. I struggle so hard to see their romance that it feels respectful at this point to just give them their privacy. The insistent use of a dopey OST and dark lighting makes me feel like the director is doubling down on his tricks and telling me to take it or leave it because this is who he is—fine, I cry uncle. Also, Jun Ho seems like that guy in high school—the smart, good-looking one who knows he’s all that, and thus far, I haven’t seen that much growth, depth, charisma or heart in him, and I find myself just not caring.

This week I watched the end of The Atypical Family. I liked the ending, simply because there was still a lot of plot to resolve in the last episode.

For some reason, I decided to watch Death's Game this week. It was a little violent for me, but in the end I found it satisfying. I appreciated the way that each episode was connected to the plot of the story as a whole. I also LOVED the acting in that show! Especially Ki Mi Kyung. I know she always plays everyone's mom now, but mostly she's given comic roles. Here she really shone as a tragic figure. She was also adept at playing a character within a character. (The protagonist is temporarily placed in the bodies and minds of others as part of the plot, so his character was played by Seo In Guk but also by every guest actor: Lee Jae Wook and Lee Do Hyun were shining examples. And Kim Jae Wook, holy cow!)

Now I'm watching The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, which I didn't watch when it was airing. It's uneven--some of these episodes are among the best k-drama romance moments I've seen, others are cheesy. I will try to make a note of it if I finish it.

I read the book Winter in Sokcho. It's a novel about Korea translated from French. It was amazing and I would really like to discuss it with someone else who has read it. I want to talk about the symbolism without spoiling anyone! I didn't watch any other TV but I did read some other stuff. (I lied--I just started a movie my boyfriend wanted to see on the Criterion Channel, but it got too violent so I got up and left the room!)

No. It was Yangsze Choo‘s latest, The Fox Wife. I’m a bit of a fan of hers (although her books often just end up a little short for me). And this is set in Manchuria as the Chinese empire convulsed.

I’ve added The Fox Maidens now to my TBR. So funny to have two books on the same myth. Perhaps books come in waves like kdramas.

1

@indyfan Oh, cool! I know the fox myths are different in Korea and Japan, I don't know how they are in China. There are a lot of gumiho stories in Korean dramas! I thought reading a Korean-American graphic novel version where it's OK for people (and supernatural beings!) to be queer would be refreshing for some k-drama aficionados. (Though not for others, I understand and accept.) I placed a hold on The Fox Wife at the library. It looks popular!

2

I really enjoyed Death's Game. It's my second favorite k-drama this year (being Atypical Family the first one).

They both had a real last episode, with a lot to resolve! I frequently get impatient with k-drama writers for the last episode of a drama, whether it's the 16th, the 12th, the 20th, the 8th or the 10th. Somehow they just have a really hard time bringing the story to a full resolution in the LAST episode. Either they can't help it and have to resolve it all in the penultimate episode, or they don't resolve it at all! Atypical Family gave us a wonderful resolution in the last episode, providing information about every character's development without sacrificing dramatic tension. For me it was the small moment when the FL was shown cooking and adjusting the flame on the stove.

I've been busy this week, but also nothing is really interesting to watch lately. So watched bridgerton s3 and it was kinda ok. I'm not fan of the series but still watch it hehe.

Then I watched Panchayat s3, it was one of my favorite hindi series. S3 has been slow most of the episodes. Only the last 2 episodes were fun.

As for kdramas, I'm watching Soundtrack 1 as CW, which is so fun. Then fairytale, I don't like it much but it's a short series so I might complete. I dropped Atypical family but now I think to pick it back up , I may not like the love story btw the leads but the other aspects of the show were interesting.

LIVE WATCHES:

1. CRASH - Our eccentric and endearing team continues to gel nicely as a work family and we get some awesome action and humour scenes. It's so darn good!

2. DOCTOR WHO - What a cliffhanger! Hopefully next week's continuation will provide a satisfying resolution to the mystery of Ruby Sunday's birth.

FINISHED:

1. WILL TRENT - What is it about mid-June and cliffhangers? There had better be a season 3 or everyone will be howling given how things have ended this season.

ONGOING:

My slow crawl through DOCTOR SLUMP, A GOOD DAY TO BE A DOG and SECRET INSPECTOR & JOY continues.

Like I said before - I like them but as lunchtime watches here and there.

JUST STARTED:

1. BLACK - It's been amusing so far watching Song Seong-Hoon and Go-Ara as a Grim Reaper and woman who can foretell people's deaths so far.

2. THE ACOLYTE - STAR WARS series have been hit-or-miss. This one hits with me. Especially the most recent episode. And though I'm not the biggest fan of him, it includes Lee Jung-Jae as one of the major supporting characters.

'High School Return of a Gangster' is turning out to be my favourite k-drama watch of the week. Song Yi-heon being taken to the seaside and experiencing freedom for what might be the first time ever... I loved it. This is just such a sweet series.

'Crash'. Hmm. Maybe the production team had a take-your-kid-to-work day, and someone's six-year old son was allowed to script the action sequences? I can't think how else to explain the sheer number of crashed vehicles in that episode.

Fewer stunts, more character development, please.

Otherwise this week I have been glued to 'The Double', which takes all the tropes - evil stepmothers, wicked-crazy princesses, overbearing CEOs... er, sorry, dukes - to the nth degree. So far it is ridiculously enjoyable. And the male lead and his fan? Oh, my word! I'd watch the series just for that.
