Serendipity leads Kim So-hyun and Chae Jong-hyeop to reunite

The first script reading stills have been released for tvN’s Serendipity’s Embrace, signaling the start of our rom-com’s promo train with Kim So-hyun (My Lovely Liar) and Chae Jong-hyeop (Castaway Diva, Eye Love You) headlining the webtoon adaptation.

In a classic coming-of-age and first love romance, the story follows our high school sweethearts as fate gives them a second chance ten years later, when they’re coincidentally reunited at the age of 29.

Here, our heroine is PD Lee Hong-joo (Kim So-hyun), who works in animation production. Having fallen hard for our hero during her younger years, even now she still carries baggage from their breakup and – for now – remains a cynic about love.

On his part, Kang Hoo-young (Chae Jong-hyeop) has been living abroad for the last 10 years and has been working as a financial planner. Although he’s described as level-headed in both romance and in his career, he of course will have his emotions upheaved when he meets Hong-joo again in South Korea.

Yoon Ji-on (My Lovely Liar) takes on the part of the free-spirited writer Bang Jun-ho who wistfully wishes that time travel was real. To this day, he lives with regret for a decision he made in the past and is now trying to make up for lost time.

As English teacher Kim Hye-ji, Dasom (Kokdu: Season of Deity) is said to be sincere about love and works at our story’s Oh-bok High School. She’s also best friends with our heroine Hong-joo and have known each other since their school days.

In supporting roles, Lee Won-jung (Hierarchy) rounds out the main friend group as Hoo-young’s self-proclaimed bestie, in addition to being friends with both Hong-joo and Hye-ji. Speaking of the latter, Hwang Sung-bin (Frankly Speaking) is colleagues with her at Oh-bok High as the P.E. teacher and is nicknamed Superman by the students.

The cast lineup also includes CEO Yoon Jung-hee (Now We Are Breaking Up) and Hoo-young’s uncle Choi Dae-chul (The Real Has Come), as well as a special guest appearance by Kim Jung-nan (Queen of Tears) playing Hoo-young’s mother.

Directed by PD Song Hyun-wook (The Midnight Studio, The King’s Affection) with writing by Park Geu-ro, 8-episode drama Serendipity’s Embrace will be following Player 2 – Master of Swindler in the Monday-Tuesday slot, premiering on July 22.

The breakup was with YJO not CJH. She was in love with YJO during her high school years. CJH was Dasom’s first love at that time.

Oh is that how the love square (or web?) will play out? The source article didn't mention that part, so I thought they were indicating CJH and KSH as each other's first loves. 😅

In the webtoon CJH has an unrequited love for KSH. She is his first love but KSH loved YJO and she was his muse and the reason he became a famous writer. The letter she delivers to CJH is from Dasom who is too shy to deliver it herself but it causes him to misunderstand.

@tccolb The first teaser has come out and you could be right. They maybe have changed the first love flow to CJH and KSH.

I like the cast. I want to see what new twist can the writer put on a dime-a-dozen first love K-drama staple story.

I need a good romance! They can't waste time with 8 episodes.

Chae Jong-Hyeop and Kim So-Hyun is a good pairing!

I totally missed that it was only 8 episodes until you pointed it out! I wonder if this is the direction that pure rom-coms are headed? I don't mind, and would be jazzed if that helped it stay more true to genre!

Oooooh, what fun! With this cast, I’ll definitely check it out.

Though that sweater is distracting 👀💀

I wonder who Choi Dae-chul is trying to scare away.

This being only 8 episodes can be a good thing. I expect the story to be tightly written so this can be a good binge watch (if my patience allows it) or a breezy Mon and Tues drama

It's always a little odd to see script-reading stills as if they were something that just happened - this started filming almost two years ago, before Kim So-hyun and Yoon Ji-on were in Lovely Liar. And I wonder if the brace on CJH's wrist is from the injury he got during Love All Play? I’m looking forward to seeing them all magically rejuvenated.

TrainWRECK! TrainWRECK! Too long in production to be good...too many good-looking men and women to be bad...

(FWIW, in all honesty, I really **am** rooting for this show because I'm looking forward to the rivalry with Auditors. If it's really bad it won't be fun at all...)

@elinor haha I thought I remembered this being produced a couple of years ago, so when they released stills, I was so confused for a minute! 😂

@attiton with a cast like that and only 8 episodes, I'm telling myself they'd have to try PRETTY HARD for this to be a complete train wreck, so I'm hopeful 😅 We get to see Chae Jong-hyeop, the OG, and then follow up with his dongsaeng, so it's going to be a good July! 👍

At least, he has a better haircut than in Castaway Diva!

I like to think of this as his "Lee Jung-ha" look. I much prefer it as well. 🤣

*ahem* @attiton I believe you mean that's Lee Jeong-ha's Chae Jong-hyeop look? 😉

That is true. These pictures must be from Oct 2022 while the MLL script read would have been in Feb 2023.

It's like time traveling in a confusing way lol, with so many dramas being pre-produced and not being broadcast until sometimes years later 😵‍💫

I can’t wait for this. The shorter run time is definitely the way to go I hope all the long dragged out dramas get with the programme and start seeing 12 episodes as the new max episode count for a full length drama.

8-10 for pure romcom without serial killers is the right way to go. For more serious dramas 10-12 is the right fit. Most of the 16 episode dramas in the last few years have been filled with nonsense filler and very little plot.

Exactly, the unnecessary time jumps, too much time on minor/boring characters NO ONE cares about are the usual telltale signs.
