News bites: June 4, 2024

  • Kim Yoo-jung (My Demon) is reportedly turning sociopath for a new melo-thriller called Dear X, playing the part of a two-faced top star actress who manipulates others for her own success. Adapted from a popular webtoon by the same title, the series has PD Lee Eung-bok (Sweet Home, Mr. Sunshine) at the helm with scripts by Choi Ja-won (No Path Back). [Sports Kyunghyang, Star News]

  • Lee Dong-wook (A Shop for Killers) is in discussions for a comical role in the new office drama, Divorce Insurance. As a three-time divorcé, Lee’s character works as an actuary and we’ll be following his team’s journey as they develop a new divorce-related insurance. Possibly airing on tvN early next year, production is being led by filmmaker Lee Won-seok (Killing Romance) and writer Lee Tae-yoon (Secret Royal Inspector and Joy). [Sports Donga]
  • New posters are out for JTBC’s upcoming Miss Night and Day (previously The Woman Who is Different by Day and Night), showcasing our main duo (or is it trio?), with Choi Jin-hyuk (Numbers) perplexed by our body-sharing Lee Jung-eun (A Bloody Lucky Day) and Jung Eun-ji (Work Later Drink Now 2). The fantasy rom-com will be airing weekends, following The Atypical Family on June 15. [JTBC]

  • Jeon Hye-jin (Not Others) has confirmed her next project titled Riding Life, in a new series about family. Production also made an offer to Jeon Suk-ho (Blood Free) – who is currently in talks – hoping to have the two Jeons play husband and wife. Expected to broadcast in 2025, the drama has PD Kim Chul-kyu (Celebrity, Flower of Evil) attached to direct and is expected to release on ENA. [Newsen, Star News (1), (2)]
  • Rain (Ghost Doctor) is being courted to play the new season’s big bad, causing (more) trouble for our heroes — Woo Do-hwan (Joseon Attorney) and Lee Sang-yi (My Demon) — in Netflix’s Bloodhounds 2. With production remaining in the hands of filmmaker Kim Joo-hwan (My Heart Puppy) in both writing and directing, filming for the second installment is planning to begin once all casting has been finalized. [Star News, Xports News]
  • In the meantime, we’ll soon be seeing Rain this summer (pun intended) come July 3, in Disney+’s new action-melo Red Swan. Kicking off promos with a grand first poster and stills, the series stars an ensemble cast including Kim Haneul (Nothing Uncovered) and Jung Kyeo-woon (You’re Too Much), in addition to Seo Yi-sook (Knight Flower), Yoon Je-moon (Nothing Uncovered), and Ki Eun-se (Now We Are Breaking Up). I mostly hope that Jeon Hye-jin is doing well. 🙏

I'm excited to see Kim Yoo-jung going dark in Dear X. Apparently, Kim Young-dae is in discussions for the male lead?

Ugh, Disney, don’t tempt me! Those pictures of RED SWAN are giving me LITTLE WOMEN vibes, which is not a bad thing. *cue ominous music and flashbacks to creepy indoor gardens* 👠🫣 *gulps*
(Rain is a plus, too!)

MISS NIGHT & DAY: definitely on the list.

Sociopath Yoo-jung will probably be her best adult role. She was really good in those crazy melodramas of old.

1 That is a lot of brown. It could be fun to see her be straight up evil, but I sometimes have a hard time watching dramas in which I don’t like anyone.

2 Divorce insurance was a real thing for a while (at least in the US) but it failed completely because no one could convince engaged couples to get it. No matter what the stats are, no one wants to believe they’ll get divorced!

3 I’m getting more and more interested in this drama. These posters look so fun!

4 I hope Jeon Hye-jin is doing okay.

5 Bloodhounds doesn’t really need a second season but I will probably watch it 😂

6 Have I had my head in the sand about this one? This is the first I’ve heard of it for some reason, but I really have to be convinced to watch anything on Hulu/Disney with those atrocious subtitles.

Rain! lets keep having more rain. Summer's coming and we need some to keep us from dying of heat. I like the title of Miss Night and Day better, its shorter. Lee Dong-wook? I'm already signed up-(hope its good). Joining you all in wishing Jeon Hye-jin to be doing well and glad she is coming back to her career. Kim yoo jung? sounds like a good challenge for her. I'll be there for the crazy.

Kim Yoo-jung is a fabulous actress and one of my very favorites, but I wish she would pick a different role. She has the talent, skills and professionalism to do as much justice to the role as anyone that you could name but I have no desire to watch her be a sociopath. So, I will skip DEAR X.

Divorce insurance? People have too much actual control over that decision for it to be an insurable event. Please give me a more realistic premise.

Lee Dong Wook in a comical role is something he can be really good at.

I also got my eyes on Kim Yoo Jung's new drama, Dear X. I need more info though since I am not sure if I can like a manipulative, two-faced top star.

I’d like to see him in something lighthearted also. Skipped Shop for Killers so it seems like forever since Nine Tale. He is so funny and reactive on YouTube we need to see that again.

Bored of sweet and goody2 Kim Yoo Jung and most of her recent choices are not exactly successful, in terms of ratings. Now, a villainness Kim Yoo Jung is something I look forward too. Who knows, a villian role can help give her a much needed boost, like what it did to the ML from Lovely Runner and Nam Goong Min.

As for Rain, I am glad he is coming back to the screens via Netflix and Disney+. I am glad that he decided to pick up a baddie role. He can stretch his wings....

I am going to add Miss Night and Day, even if romcom is not my favourite genre. Having two veteran actors help.

I would also look to having Lee Dong Wook again. He definitely age like fine wine.
