News bites: June 12, 2024

Shin Hye-sun, Lee Jin-wook, Kang Hoon

  • ENA announced that the romance To My Hae-ri has been slotted on the schedule for later this year, making me hopeful for a thoughtful story with scripts penned by Han Ga-ram (I’ll Find You on a Beautiful Day) and PD Jung Ji-hyun (Lies Hidden in My Garden, Twenty Five Twenty One) at the helm. Plus points for the cast as well, with Shin Hye-sun (Welcome to Samdal-ri), Lee Jin-wook (Sweet Home 2), and Kang Hoon (A Time Called You) headlining the series. [MBC, SBS]

  • Over on tvN, the coming-of-age rom-com Is It a Coincidence has reportedly been lined up to premiere in July, following Player 2 – Master of Swindlers in the Monday-Tuesday slot. The webtoon adaptation stars Kim So-hyun (My Lovely Liar) and Chae Jong-hyeop (Castaway Diva, Eye Love You), with production led by PD Song Hyun-wook (The Midnight Studio, The King’s Affection) and writer Park Geu-ro. [Star News]
  • The first poster has dropped for SBS’s upcoming Good Partner, with our attorney leads Jang Nara (My Happy Ending) and Nam Ji-hyun (High Cookie) on the case. Along with fellow lawyers Kim Joon-han (Anna) and Pyo Ji-hoon (Mouse), the legal drama will be airing weekends starting on July 12 next month. [SBS]

  • MBC released an animated first teaser for I Don’t Like Donkatsu, where our hero Jung Sang-hoon (Twinkling Watermelon) and neighborhood dog Casanova are about to face a similar fate. The two-episode comedy is slated to premiere on July 5, with PD Kim Young-jae and writer Noh Ye-ri leading production. [MBC]
  • tvN has a new teaser for us as well, with the stern Shin Ha-kyun (Evilive) taking charge of The Auditors, while our bushy-eyed puppy Lee Jung-ha (Moving) flails to keep up. Coming to our screens on July 6, the office comedy also stars Jin Gu (Shadow Detective) and Jo Ah-ram (Doctor Cha). [Newsen]
  • The busy July will also bring Netflix’s Sweet Home 3 on July 19, with leads Song Kang (My Demon), Lee Jin-wook (Sweet Home 2), and Lee Shi-young (Grid) reprising their roles – among others in the larger cast. Picking up from where we left off in the action-horror’s second season, production remains in the hands of PD Lee Eung-bok (Jirisan, Mr. Sunshine) and PD Park So-hyun, along with writers Hong So-ri and Park So-jung. So I read a spoiler about the cliffhanger ending for Sweet Home Season 2, so I guess I'll have to watch Season 2 now, so I can see my favorite character in Season 3!

Shin Hye-sun and Kang Hoon in one drama will be amazing, and I'm definitely there for Kim So-hyun and Chae Jong-hyeop in Is It a Coincidence.

I agree. Shin Hyesun and Kang Hoon together could be a sight to see but I fear he will be the 2ML and hence his interactions with her could be minimal. I hope I will be proven wrong.

Oh, why. .why. . why? One of my most favorites (Kang Hoon) and least favorite (is that even the correct term) Shin Hye-sun . I'll wait for the teasers to decide if it goes on my waitlist. Meanwhile, Kang Hoon is also scheduled for something-something scalpel which looks worth a first look.

Eagerly awaiting the moment when teasers/posters release for "Love Next Door" with big favorite Jung So Min. Icing on my cake - I'll be in SK while the show is airing. 😊😊😊

Re your second paragraph and tvN’s upcoming romantic comedy (hopefully) LOVE NEXT DOOR. Some random thoughts:
1. Sorry the original title was changed. There could be or maybe still can be a fascinating discussion on the whole sociological concept in SK of Mom’s Friend’s Son or Daughter for that matter.
2. I hope Jung Hae-in didn’t have to lose weight for this role because in his instagram pics from the last few weeks he is looking mighty thin to me.
3. Looking down the cast THE ATYPICAL FAMILY fans might like to know that ‘Sauna Mom’ (Kim Geum-soon) is appearing in LND and will be playing mom to Kim Ji-eun’s character.
4. I am really look forward to seeing Yun Ji-on again. He gave an amazing performance in MBC’s TOMORROW (2022) (Netflix).

Yes, the constant change in names (was once "Golden Boy", I believe??) has been a problem. I don't follow too many actors, so don't know who Jung Hae-in is - a check of his drama list shows that I haven't watched a single thing he has appeared in.

But Jung So Min is a big favorite and I'm looking forward to watching this in-country at least once.

Welcome to the world of Jung Hae-in.
As an introduction to JHI’s work I certainly would NOT recommend probably my favorite Jung Hae-in drama the six episode Netflix drama: D.P. (2021) but I could highly recommend his romantic drama from tvN A PIECE OF YOUR MIND (2020) (Viki) with FL Chae Soo-bin. It is my favorite CSB drama and iirc is/was a favorite among beanies.

Is it fate finally getting scheduled is an achievement. Congratulations for the cast and crew for not having their hardwork rot on the shelf. Maybe this can satisfy the Lovely Runner romcom cravings without the serial killer plot.

1: Ooh, I love this cast and am definitely interested. Bummer Kang Hoon doesn’t seem like the ML in this though… (I’d love to be wrong about this)

2: CJH!! Never not excited to see this smile back on my screen.

3: I was only vaguely interested in this until I saw Jang Nara looking fierce and amazing and now I might have to give it a go.

4: Only two episodes = they don’t have much time to mess it up. I hope this is super cute!

5: Getting more and more excited for The Auditors. Please come soon, 감사합니다.

2) I really wonder why this show didn't find a channel before. Both actors are famous enough. Maybe it's because there are only 8 episodes.

3 and 4) I like the casting. Let's hope it will follow the synopsis and won't be a different story at the end.

Apparently it’s because CJH wasn’t popular enough for the drama to sell overseas but after his Japanese drama his fandom in Japan exploded and they could finally sell it overseas. There was an article about this previously. Women can’t sell romcom dramas anymore. It’s dependent entirely on the male fandom.

Kim Soo-Hyun is far from unknown. Chae Jong-Hyeop was the lead in 3 dramas before.

The PD is not unknow too. The King's Affection did pretty well on KBS and Netflix.

bushy-eyed

Even after watching the trailer, I don't understand what this means, but The Auditors is the one I'm most excited about on this list. I hope it takes itself every bit as seriously as Numbers did. Jin Gu's hair looks more plausible in motion than in stills.

@attiton Do yo have a countdown calendar going for The Auditors?! 😉

1

@zindigo No, I do not have a countdown calendar for the "Fight of the Cutie-Patootie DEATH BY CINNAMON" cagematch coming up this July.

No, I don't.

2

@attiton Ok then 😂 Fortunately (for you) little lord bushy-eyed will be on our screens first. Kind of an unfair head start, dontcha think?

1

@zindigo It's only "unfair" if you don't think that CJH has what it takes...🍬😘

0

@attiton Those might be fighting words 🤣

1

@attiton I'm still laughing at "death by cinnamon" 😂😂😂

@elinor Sorry for hijacking your post! 🤗

2

@zindigo My comments exist only to be highjacked, especially by cutie-patooties who smell of cinnamon.

I no longer have any idea what shows we're talking about but July is on my calendar!

3

@attiton I think you mean “DEATH BY CINNAMON ROLLS, right?? Cuz ummmmmm death by just Cinnamon isn’t fun…. Nor is it cute, unlike uri sweet Resident Cinnamon Rolls

@attiton's gifs have perfectly demonstrated the definition of this neologism and established Lee Jung-ha as the defining example. How do we get this to the folks at Merriam-Webster?

The gifs are safe for work as long as you're fine with having your coworkers wonder why you're grinning like an idiot in the middle of an online meeting. Not that I would know personally.

OKOKOK I have to say the quiet part out loud, @hopefulromantic.

Are you clocking that there are going to be competing Chae Jong-hyeop and Lee Jung-ha dramas on at the same time in July this year?

I know, I know, y'all are all thinking, "Don't say COMPETE, Seon-ha. There's no reason these two can't share the screen peacefully."

And to those thinking that, I reply: Oh, hoho! Just you wait and see, my pretties...JUST...YOU...WAIT. 😈

But being a CJY fan, I AM picking up what you're putting down and I'm firing up the gif engines as we speak hehehe...

I am sooo thrilled to hear it @zindigo ! July's gonna be super fun!!

2

I mean CJH. I must not be much of a fan if I can't even reference his name correctly lol.

2

Very excited for Sweet Home S3. Feels like I'm one of the few that really liked S2 (it was admittedly a bit of a weird season), so I'm very curious to see how they conclude the story.

Also very interested in Good Partner, and I might give To My Hae-ri and Is It a Coincidence a shot as well.

Oh, definitely. I've always seen the first 3 episodes as a direct sequel to S1, with the last 5 episodes being a more slow-paced story that for a large part acts as a set-up for S3.
