Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale: Episodes 1-2
by Dramaddictally
The new rom-com from TVING takes a satirical look at both Cinderella stories and tried-and-true K-drama tropes. It’s wacky, brash, a little off-color, and aiming to speak straight to the hearts of the downtrodden masses, whether looking for love or just a j-o-b. While the setup had me worried, the crass chemistry between the leads had me laughing out loud and looking forward to more.
EPISODES 1-2
I didn’t know what to expect, and the first episode started to scare me off with its on-screen graphics, over-the-top humor, and sloppy handling of the heroine’s step-family. But by the time our leads met at the end of Episode 1, I saw a spark that sent me reeling into the next chapter of this modern romance.
The drama is structured like an old-school fairy tale book, with a third-person narrator that tells us what our heroine and hero are thinking and also speaks directly to the audience to lay out the morals of the story — and sometimes the jokes. We’re warned at the beginning that this is not a tale for kids, but “kidults.” And the narrator never fails to jab at contemporary society when linking together “poor Cinderella” with, say, the current cost of rent in Seoul.
The aim is to draw us in and put us right in the fancy slippers of our heroine, SHIN JAE-RIM (Pyo Ye-jin) — who’s flawed, funny, broke, and trying to figure out her next steps in life. You see, her DAD (Ryu Seung-soo) has just passed away (she can’t not be an orphan), leaving her to live with her step-mother, HWANG SO-RA (Baek Joo-hee), and two step-sisters.
So-ra and the step-sibs aren’t as awful as we might expect. In fact, they seem kind of like a regular crazy family, but Jae-rim never felt like she fit in. And with Dad gone, and the mountain of debt he left her in, she realizes it’s time to break out on her own. But, you know, that takes money.
What’s a heroine to do when she has no work experience, comes from a poor family, and lacks the right connections? Dream of a freakin’ fairy tale, of course! And that means setting her sights on marriage. If the hand you’re dealt in life is only based on luck in the beginning, her friend tells her, then the second phase is all about making the right choices. So, next goal: get a rich husband.
At first, Jae-rim isn’t so sure. But it was her father’s dying wish that she turn herself into a Cinderella so that she can lead a better life (which kind of pisses her off, since it means he thinks she can’t succeed on her own). Still, after some thought — and realizing that the option are few — she gets fully onboard with the idea.
Enter our Prince Charming Cha-min — no, really, that’s his name: MOON CHA-MIN (Lee Jun-young). And he’s an 8th generation chaebol (LOL enter also the rom-com satire). And if you think third-gen chaebols are frivolous, wait until you get a load of this guy. Who cares if he’s the CEO and the business is bleeding money. Can’t we all just follow our joy?
Cha-min is notoriously single. And it’s not just that he loves himself enough to not need anyone else to love him. It’s also that pretty women just look like stones to him. Literally. When the camera shifts to a pretty face, we see her turn into a piece of rock. Also, as a chaebol, he’s got trauma. That’s right, when he was a child he messed up a fingernail on some broken glass, and it never grew back properly. HAHA. (Okay, this just got funny.)
The quintessential meet-cute occurs on a staircase at Chungdam Heaven (that would be the conglomerate that Cha-min runs). Jae-rim is headed up the stairs in her best outfit, all dolled up for an interview, where she plans to get a job, meet a rich man, and live out her Cinderella dreams. Except, one shoe flies off, ricochets down the steps, and hits Cha-min smack in the head.
Jae-rim — all in fairy-tale fantasyland in her head — thinks she’s already hit her lucky draw. But Cha-min picks up the shoe and threatens to sue her for attempted murder. He assumes she did it on purpose because she’s after his money, but she actually has no idea who he is. She thinks to herself, “This guy is crazy. I shouldn’t get involved.” (Oh honey, famous last words.)
When he won’t hand over her shoe, the real Jae-rim comes out. She pushes him, he falls backward, and she catches him around the waist in a classic K-drama trope — but with the roles reversed. She looks fierce. He looks terrified. And the narrator tells us a new kind of magic is starting.
Little do either of them know that Jae-rim’s interview is scheduled with the CEO. So, things aren’t off to a good start — and they only go downhill. Cha-min doesn’t want to hire her because of the shoe mishap and Jae-rim thinks she’s got nothing to lose so she curses him loudly and confidently. Why should he live a great life when she isn’t?!
Later, Cha-min can’t stop thinking of the way she caught him around the waist or yelled in his face (notably, she did not turn into a stone). And alone in his room, he’s imagining her in a short skirt, chasing him around and jumping on the bed. He’s falling for her all right, and he just can’t get her off his mind.
Long story short, she’s got the job. He wants to see her again (not just in his thoughts) and she’s ecstatic that she’s employed. The problem at first is that, as a new hire, she changes her attitude to be cutesy and on call — but he liked her better before. And when he hears that her goal in life is to be Cinderella, he’s disappointed. She’s just like every other woman after all, and he hates opportunists.
For some reason that I’m not totally sure of, they end up in a series of showdowns to sort out her work contract. There’s a staring contest, arm wrestling, and of course a drinking competition — where Jae-rim drinks him under the table (or, in the words of the narrator, becomes a “blackhole”). Cha-min takes two sips and spews graphically altered vomit across the park where they’ve come to carry out these games. And in the end, Jae-min gets a permanent position.
In what amounts to a deep conversation for these two, Cha-min wants to know her goals once she’s reached her fairy-tale dream. She says that she’ll be happy just giving and receiving love. He says he doesn’t believe in abstract goals — it’s the perfect target for scammers (haha and this is the moment he won me over). But she counters, “Oh, you’ve never been in love, have you?” It’s true, but he shakes it off. He doesn’t need to get married since he loves himself enough.
After all the alcohol consumption, Jae-rim needs to pee. Like bad. No, like, really, really — I can’t even walk or standup — bad. But there’s no bathroom at the park. So, after a satirical scene where she dramatically yells to just leave her there and he yells back that he can’t leave someone in crisis (with church-y music playing overtop), he ends up carrying her. And our girl thinks: “Does this mean we’re compatible?” (Hahahaha. I cannot stop laughing.)
On the other side, our Prince Cha-min says out loud, “If you pee on me, I’ll kill you.” (LOL.) And Jae-rim responds, “Oppa, hurry!” Which of course makes him think she’s delirious. But, maybe she’s just living out her K-drama dreams? The tone here is so perfect — comical and cynical in just the right measure.
He gets her to a public restroom and waits outside. When she’s done, she thinks about him carrying her, sweat dripping off him, and she’s suddenly sold. She goes back outside to act aegyo (which doesn’t work on him) when some chick shows up and calls out, “Honey!” They look, and the woman is headed straight for our hero — who she says is her fiancé.
Jae-rim is incensed. He doesn’t want to get married but he’s engaged? “Why did he lie to me? Is he a bad guy?” Uh-oh. And let the drama begin! (In both senses of the word).
Well, the second episode really sucked me in. Not every single comedy bit hits right, but the ones that do are spit-out-your-soda funny. I love the satire of both Cinderella and of K-drama rom-coms, but even more I love the leads’ interactions. They’re both brazen and neither one is trying too hard to impress the other — at least not in a real way. And even if/when they do try, something happens to turn them back into their vomiting, peeing, cursing, sweating selves.
I hope we continue down this road of reality-based fairy tale characters just being a funny mismatch that kind of talks over each other and cancels each other out. (That is, until they don’t.) I’m not so taken with any of the side characters, so I’d like them to remain on the side. But the leads are so fresh — and yet so familiar — that I can’t help but smile to think of what might come next.

I had the same reaction. Was jussst about to drop it, when the staircase push pulled me back and Ep. 2 reeled me in fully. The leads are great together and some of their lines are unexpectedly delightful. I liked when she reiterated that she only wanted the job to get married and he said something along the lines of "anybody else would read the room and LIE" lol.

I did not expect to like this as much as i did, the slightly mean spirited dark humour, the sarcastic narration and the over the top physical comedy are well balanced and mostly funny.
The self awareness and the one liners had me sold though.

I liked the first two episodes. This show is cute, self-aware, and sometimes genuinely funny. I found myself arguing with the plot here and there but realized quickly there's no point in doing so. The plot isn't here to impress you with its complexity, cleverness, or consistency. I just have to accept from the start that the central premise of a young woman wanting to get married to support herself now that her father is dead is as flimsy and insubstantial as cotton candy. But it exists to get the leads in each other's spheres which is all that matters at this point.
The chemistry between the leads so far isn't on the level of, say, "Lovely Runner," but they play off each other well and seem to be having fun with the material. I'd also say that the animation and voiceovers may annoy some viewers, but I like both so far.

I definitely think that @dramaddictally hits the nail on the head that some of the characterizations (especially of the step-family) was well-sloppy in episode one, but by the time we really understand that the step-mom isn’t evil, she’s just a little dopey, and the sisters aren’t evil, they are just a little childish…the humor falls completely into place, and then the thought that the girls’ nightly drinking ration is ONE KEG of beer each (I mean LOLOLOL!) had me rolling in the aisles!!!

The scene that made me laugh the longest and hardest was when Jae-rim, bent over in full bladder pain was trying to shoo away Cha-Min, who was contorting his body in hilarious parting-is-such-sweet-sorrow postures. The slo-mo tossing of the leaves and Jun's over-the-top expressions really got me.

I already liked the first episode enough, but I really loved the second episode. It's stupid, ridiculous, and also absolutely hilarious. This obviously isn't going for some kind of deep storyline, and while I prefer a good story, when both the romance and the comedy manage to win me over, which is a rare thing, you certainly won't hear me complaining.

Thank you for the recap.
It was definitely an interesting take on fairytales. I love both uri Cinderella wannabe and Prince Cha-min who is not yet charming.
But he has potential. As Jae-rim astutely points out, it takes a lunatic to deal with a lunatic. I'm happy to tag along with them on this ride.I kept on thinking the stepmother and stepsisters will turn out to be cruel money grubbers who would usurp Jae-rim's inheritance and turn her out and then she would have to go and share a
palaceapartment with the ML. No such luck as yet. The mother and stepsisters seem nice enough. But I'm watching them warily. The father's meet cute with the stepmother and his "advisory" scenes with Jae-rim are all fairytale style. I'm not sure yet if such scenes will continue and if I will like them but it worked for now. Especially the pumpkin one. And Jae-rim's reaction to seeing the pumpkin cake at Chungdam Heaven.
I though the father's letter was a secret code for telling her where he's hidden her inheritance but again no such luck. But I do think his "advise" of relying upon others has a deeper meaning and perhaps inspiring her to achieve success on her own terms. I hope this is true.
I didn't understand the logic of the stepmother being pregnant. It was so weird and came out of left field. I wonder if there is any significance of this or her belly dancing to the plot.
Jae-rim and her
drinking buddybest friend make a good team. I would like to see them hanging outnot drinkingtogether.Cha-min does seem like a wonderful boss who increases the employees' salaries when the business is facing losses. That "game" which outed Jae-rim's Cinderella dream was also fun.
What is the deal with Cha-min's umbrella. Although must say he wielded it as well as a red haired Gumiho we all know and love. Is there any possibility for another brother for Lee Yeon.
I like how strong and assertive Jae-rim was and so does Cha-min. I bet he fell for her the moment she pushed him down the stairs and then smoothly held him. Uri Sun-Jae ya would be very proud of her reflexes. After all he only had to hold a slim Sol but she held onto a *ahem* bigger boulder!? What ... if Cha-min can see girls as stones can't Jae-rim see boys as boulders.
I loved Cha-min's *imagination* Jae-rim. All twinkley and cute and smart-ass. His reaction when Jae-rim accepting his job offer said its their "first day" together was priceless. We got to admire his wardrobe as he fretted over what to wear when he met her. He ended by choosing something he thought she would hate and I LOVED that she called him out on that the moment she laid eyes on him. 😂 Chastity Belt indeed.
Again not a fan of toilet humor but again it served as an *important* plot point but please no more. I'm sure she would have also offered him a bandaid when he hurt himself as a kid.

Given the most recent events I can't trust romcom right now, but so far this seems like a cute and simple show.
1. I wonder how long will it take for our FL to realize she's part of her family.
It seems like her parents did love each other on another level, and they didn't have a comfortable relationship with each other's children, but just because they didn't become the "dad" and "mom" of the three kids, they probably felt more like "my mom's/dad's partner". But it doesn't mean they didn't care about the kids.
Her stepmom seems lovely, and her second older sister treats her like that because she's effectively her older sister. She's giving me Reply Bo Ra's vibes. 😂 Aka. My second older sister vibes.
The scene with them breaking the diet together was ON POINT.
2. The ML is such a weirdo. He even takes photos with that freaking umbrella. 🤣🤣🤣
But it's been a while that I've seen a chaebol act like an ignorant brat, so I'm having fun. Maybe since SWL (Idk if QoT counts)? Chaebols in kdramaland usually are the most considerate and thoughtful people on earth but with anger issues/rude. This guy seems to live in his freaking bubble, just like Louie did. I prefer this, tbh.
3. Why was people thinking the FL was weird for wanting to be Cinderella? A study says that the word most used by women in their 17-30's in my country is "sugar daddy". Another study says being poor is turning people insane.
Well, all I just said is BS but I don't think I'm that far away from reality. These days when you see someone get a rich partner you don't shame them, you say "good for them, I wanna be them". 😂
The FL and her friend are so freaking relatable it's hilarious.
Anyway, I'm enjoying this so far, even tho episode two felt more like a filler. But I've seen worse this week alone, so I'm fine with that.

I loved it. It's already convinced me that if you can't have good CGI, you should go ALL IN on the bad CGI. And I can't wait to see more of the umbrella. So far its role seems to be "it's a Kdrama and I am right here," but I expect some character development and action scenes for it and its shiny little lion head.
The plot efficiency is impressive, with the playground workout with the neighborhood seniors (who are secretly Olympians - granny strolling by waving with giant barbells in one hand 🤣) telescoping every underdog movie hero getting-in-shape sequence ever into 60 perfectly played seconds. And the payoff being the FL's ability to do a staircase catch without breaking a sweat was gold.
The chastity belt is not the craziest thing about that outfit. What is that suit jacket that dwindles into a shirt and disappears down his pants? Growing awareness of his own ridiculousness is one of my favorite things in a chaebol ML and LJY is serving the ridiculous part well.
Oh yeah, the dramatic aria during the bladder crisis scene is "Lascia ch'io pianga" ("Let me
peeweep"). The narrator reminds me a bit of Lady Whistledown from Bridgerton. Can't wait for next week. Please stay goofy, show.Required fields are marked *

I am liking that overall tone and vibe especially that fairytale style narrator. Can't wait for fairy godmother to make her appearance. Although I have a feeling the senior female employee in Heaven Chungdam's may turn out to be her.
Considering the umbrella appears in the drama posters too, it would be safe to say it is *important*. 😂

Do you think he has a family? One of the employee's mentioned that it was the Chairman's umbrella. So I wonder if his entire family

When I watched the two episodes back to back. I was surprised that the two hours just flew by so fast. I like Pyo Ye Jin and Lee Jun Young here enough to want to know more about their characters and their story. There are a lot of CGI that adds to the fairytale feel of the story. I saw someone mention this in the comments of another post and then this recap made me go check it out and I knew what I went in expecting, but this was somehow stupider but simultaneously also way funnier than anything I imagined.
Somehow the ott nature of the storytelling made everything so much better, the choral dramatic music, slow motion tornado, the weird but intriguing leads, the step family trope turned on its head. If the rest of the drama manages to keep this kind of zany nonsense hilarity energy, I'd be really happy.
Also, I love when kdramas invert gendered romantic cliches, so that suave waist grab save she did on the staircase she did and his flustered feelings about it was a great moment.
Finally, idk why but the ml's face kept making me think of Lee Kyu Hyung. They could totally play very convincing siblings in some drama.

No, that was not true. I was able to access this thanks to the beneficiance of a fellow DB commentator, how wrote "Hacja, thanks for your wonderfully insightful comments. Here is the access code to my Paramount + Asian account. Please be sure to make your usual smart comments to the recap section." (Of course, this last is a joke. No, let me finally tell the truth. I watched this thanks to the expertise of a resident DB commentator, who said "Hacja. I know you are an honest man. Here is the honest way to watch this show, without any unauthorized access."
So thanks to her expertise and sincere advice, I have this to say as a comment: I really enjoyed the whole need to urinate scenario. It was funny.
P.S. I did like these two episodes. The humor was very hit and miss, but overall, it was very clever. Anyone, thanks again to the really smart anonymous DB commentator who allowed me to contribute my brilliant insights to this discussion.
